The LAKE MICHIGAN Crossing | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 10

  • It’s our FIRST OVERNIGHT PASSAGE! We set sail across Lake Michigan, leaving in the middle of the night to ride the fading winds of a storm. Kirk’s dad arrives just before midnight to join us for the trip.
The sail starts out with 15+ knts on the nose, and 5’ waves which drop to a couple feet by the next afternoon. We fly our spinnaker for the first time ever.
Lauren struggles with seasickness while Kirk and his dad have a ball sailing. After arriving at a marina in Pentwater, Michigan, we crack a bottle of whiskey to celebrate the 100-mile journey.
    Hope you enjoy!
    Lauren & Kirk

A nice swim usually helps me when I start to get sick. If I feel it coming on, I’ll get overboard as quickly as possible. Ten minutes makes a huge difference.

Get some Sturgeron 15 on EBay. No side effects, then gradually reduce dosage to nil over a few days.
Easier to sock the Kite if you collapse it 1st. Let the sheet go completely and go like a demon on the sock. With practice, a piece of cake. If wind picks up also run square to take the pressure out of it.
    Great Vid, enjoy.

Don't worry you're going to get use to it.
After a while on a boat, you're not going to be sick anymore. Your "inner ear" will be used to the motion of the boat. But then careful to landsickness :o)

    • @campbub
      @campbub 6 лет назад +2

something that helps me when i get land sickness, is after you make a long passage, when you get to a slip etc to stay onboard the boat for almost a day or overnight.. if i step on land to soon from being out, i start swaying, but as soon as i step onboard, im normal

Another great video guys. Sorry to hear Lauren learned about sea sickness the hard way. It’s good to see that you have found a solution. I remember the last one I was seasick the second worst thing that could happen was that I was going to die. The worst thing was that I wouldn’t.
As to whiskey, the Scots certainly call theirs “whisky” and not “Scotch” so you’re on safe ground. If you like the peaty ones like Ardbeg, our favorite in the cockpit at the end of the day is Lagavulin 16. It will stand up to the salt spray you’re feeling and tasting now that you’re off the fresh water. (It is also Ron’s destination on his pilgrimage in Scotland in Parks and Recreation.)

    • @SailingSoulianis

Dont worry seasickness is a rookie thing, it goes away as you spend more time on sea. I grew up sailing and i’m able to sleep inside with 12feet waves.
    If you’re feeling sick try:
    1. Def being outside
    2. Steering
    3. Looking at the horizon

Don't worry about being seasick. When I was in the Navy many years ago a good friend who I had been stationed with at an air station got stationed aboard the same ship as me. When he came aboard the ship was at the end of a major overhaul in the shipyards in Portsmouth, VA so he had been aboard for 5 months before the boat had water under her keel again. Our first cruise was finally scheduled for 3 days to test the work done by the yard and conditions were dead calm. The minute the ship left the pier he got seasick to the extent he was incapcitated for the entire 3 days. The Navy was officially considering giving him a sea duty exemption. But my friend refused it and finally overcame his seasickness in the next few weeks. I sometimes think that the anxiety of doing something you've never done before and the excitement can puncuate your nerves to the point of seasickness. Also, there are some key things you can do to avoid it. One is keeping busy so you mind isn't on feeling bad. I heard you say that you couldn't lift a finger to help. That's when I would have put you to work and kept you busy doing something.....anything! Also, being below isn't a good situation either, get up on deck and keep your head looking out at the horizon and not at things up close. Lastly, never ever ever lay down and close your eyes. I'm sure you will get over your seasickness and eventually never have to think of it again. Good Luck! and congratulations on your first crossing guys!!!

Guys, try a spinnaker pole, set on the windward sheet, don't forget the uphaul and downhaul on the pole. When dowsing the spinnaker, you need to ease the sheet just a little more, the sock (after starting) should be relatively easy to lower then. but good job and the first real sail.Fair winds, Paul

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  6 лет назад

Hi Paul! Thanks for the tips. Yes, we've learned quite a bit since that first attempt at flying the spinnaker. Easing the sheets does make a huge difference. Not having the halyard wrapped once around the forestay makes things a little easier too. Oops!
Unfortunately the boat didn't come with a spinnaker pole and it hasn't been on our immediate "must have" list. We did find a spinnaker "tack/bridle" which we've since used quite successfully to pin the tack of the sail to the forestay and fly like an asymmetrical.

Just upgraded from a 25 ft Irwin 10-4 to an Ericson 32-2. This is the Summer we cross. We will make sure to stay away from the giant tornado thingies.
Great to see some fellow Midwesterners out here on sailing YT. 🙏 Happy sailing!

This is quickly becoming my fave sailing channel. I appreciate the smoothness in your videos, the transition from one shot to another, the music is so nice and it's just a very relaxing time. I love Canadian whiskey. Don't care for Tennesee Whiskey of any kind but don't know if I have ever had Irish whiskey. I may have to try that. Congrats on the crossing and the remedy for seasickness.

Hi Lynn, thanks for watching! We're really working hard to put out quality over quantity. Cheers!

Eat apples to prevent sea sickness. On a cruse 40 years ago, on the SS Rotterdam, they had a barrel full every day on every level -- for that reason. Haven't seen them since.

With good food like that you’ll be ready for the sea of cortez.
Good area to practice, but watch out for the short fetch. Enjoy, good choices all the way around...

Pentwater has a certain charm. It may be that we arrived by boat but was a perfect little boating community.

    Seasickness:
    1) Everybody gets seasick at one point or another.
    2) First journeys are the worst, you will acclimatize.
    3) If you can be at the helm.

I get super sea sick at a very specific movement, the corkscrew. Never dink the night before or eat anything touch on your stomach. I can't eat anything in the morning. gravel only works if you take it ahead of time, when I feel sick even a little its too late. Those wrist bands seem to work. Pot or various THC medication stuff works very well. best to be at the help in control, oh and never go below deck!

"You cook good rabbit friend" (old movie quote - two mountain men who are strangers briefly share some time together). I tried your Awesome breakfast sauce and then copy cat your egg roll over. Both were Yum! Yum! Next time I will be sure to add the bell pepper and maybe some green onion to it as well. I also make my hollandaise with sour cream and spice fluid so it is very similar.

MIchelle uses bonine when it gets super nasty in the Gulf at work in the winter time. She, being an engineer, doesn't have the luxury of seeing out the window. But I feel she has it better because the bridge sways and pitches so much being so high up! Congrats on the crossing!

I ran out of Bonine recently and was using Dramamine Non-Drowsy because I had it on hand. I'm pretty sure there's no chemical difference, but I want to say Bonine worked better for me ;)

Sailing Soulianis I'm sure there isn't much difference, but she likes the chewable part of it too. Some of it your body can absorb through your mouth. Nice if you are having trouble keeping things down(like a pill)!
