Wow, I had a 1967 yellow Jeepster convertable that we purchased from the Pearl Buck estate and I drove that all through high school and into college. It was a power convertable top model. We fitted a Meyers snow plow on the front and I made lots of money plowing driveways back in the mid 70's. It was a real piece of $h*% but it got me around. The six cyl engine was full of low end torque but couldn't get out of it's own way on the highway. The heater was either off or on and I usually drove in the winter with the windows open and the heat on. Everyone certainly knew when I was at a party, it was so unique. I am glad that I survived driving it because it tried to killme on several occasions.

A college friend's dad had a brand new '71 Jeepster when I was in college. We did some good 4-wheeling in that Jeepster. The Buick V6 was a great engine in the Jeeps then. The Buick V6 was replaced with AMC engines in the '72 models. By the way, back in those days, the Colorado license plates were county coded. The plate you showed on the Jeepster was from Weld County (county seat--Greeley).

The first work truck assigned to me when I started with the Forest Service was a 1970 International Scout with the half cab option. It had a v8, wide ovals and four wheel drive. I was 21…so of course I often smoked all four wheels. Luckily I had it for about a year and never broke it. My favourite SUV back then was the Bronco 1. Still is.

We had one of these that was cut up and lifted into a mud buggy, the transmission was locked up the the Buick odd fire v6 ran like a champ. I drove by a 48 for a couple months that was for sale but not being 4wd it definitely wasn’t as desirable being 2wd. I used to drive around in my father’s 62 Willys Pickup with drum brakes and no power steering but it had the 230 OHC Tornado engine.

Obviously the original CJ Jeeps came first but the scout was the one that ignited that market the first word Bronco generation was almost a copy of the scout without the build quality Scout had a fully boxed frame and way sturdier gears and the Scout II was what the blazer aimed for ultimately out competing and leading to 2nd gen bronco jeep Cherokee and even dodge got on board...i learned to drive in a commando and first new vehicle i bought was an 80 scout at owenhouse international in Bozeman Montana,

The Buick V6 was not long on power but they were very durable engines. They were used in Jeeps of the same era as this Commando. Buick eventually bought the engines back from AMC. That's why AMC started using the 4.0 Liter in line six that was also a very good engine going back to the Nash Ambassador.

Back in the day, between myself and other family members, we owned a bunch (at least ten) of first gen SUVs and a few '50s 4wd pickups. My Scout was a '69 4 cyl, and it had the best on-road handling of them all, and also really good off road capabilities. The big four cylinder also had a cool sounding snarl on deceleration. The Internationals didn't hold up well though, especially for highway driving. The Blazers rode the best but they wallowed a bit as you went down the road, and not as off road capable as the smaller SUVs. Overall the Broncos were the probably most capable overall, especially those with the v8, but they had some truly skittish handling. It's amazing the prices they command these days.

I spend a lot of time kicking myself for selling the 1970 International Scout 800A I had. I bought it, running and driving for $500 in 1998. I did a Ford 302 swap on it and fixed the rust and such that is so common on them. I got laid off from work in winter of 2000 and panic sold the Scout. A week later I was back to work. Now Im looking for a 70s Scout II, already have the LS lined up to swap into it. I do want it to drive and feel more reliable hence the LS swap. Of course Scouts are almost unobtainium at any sort of reasonable price unless they are a rust ball but I'll still keep trying to find one
