Wow, you guys started on quite heavy hitter. I'm surprised this channel is only 7 months old.
People don't breath straight oxygen. Air has a mixture 21 percent oxygen, 78 percent nitrogen, and 1 percent CO2, water vapor, argon, methane, and traces of other gases. Oxygen given to patients does tend to be over 82% oxygen and is very combustible in that form. However, straight oxygen is deadly and has a nearly narcotic effect on people at high percentages. It would be unsuitable for long term living in space.
I like how he just quietly sits in the corner and doesn't answer any of your questions and just kind of looks at you.
It kind of adds to the tension but it's also just kind of funny.

I love how she's asking all the questions you'd hope someone watching for the first time would ask. It's kind of amazing watching someone react to something the way the director/writer probably intended.

at first i was bummed dude was there, thought there would be a constant dialogue between the 2. turns out that he is great and lets her have her own expectation and experience. Great job
I was 22 when this movie came out in '79. Back then there weren't as many scary movies as there are today with all of the jump scares. . Everybody was SO excited when the trailer came out. People were screaming in all the right places in the theater. The suspense may my chest hurt. Great movie! I still love it until this day.
For us who were kids in the 70s and became teenagers in the 80s, watching Alien was almost a rite of passage.
I was eighteen. There is NOTHING like the thrills and terror of seeing this, *Predator* , *Terminator* , *Poseidon Adventure* and other such classic greats on the big screen in a dark, surround-sounded theater. One of the few positives for being an old fart like me is having seen such masterpieces in the theater.
My uncle also saw it around 1979 in the theater - but in hungary ... In hungary the title of the movie was translated to : ''The 8th passenger is death'' (because there was 7 passengers on the ship). My uncle loved this movie that much, that - in harmony with the title: he went into the theater 8 times, to see the movie again..and again. In fact there never was a movie before and again, he wanted to see that often, as this movie.

For the dissection of the little alien, they made a plastic model for the arms, and literally went to get some scraps from a seafood store to put on it for the slimy parts.

I saw this when it first came out in theatres. It scared me so much I walked out of the theatre 7 different times. One guy watching actually crawled up the aisle to get out of there. Super scary for its time.
Keep in mind back then there wasn’t no internet like we have today were you can basically see everything online from porn to macabre executions from Cartels so for me I don’t know if I’m the only one with this opinion but for me the fact that we didn’t have internet and technology was pretty much in its primitive stage that all made it feel so real and scary 😟 so I understand people who saw it in theaters for the first time were greatly disturbed trust me I saw 👀 it in the early 90s when I was like 6 years old and it scared the living crap outta me I remember my grandfather having the old cable box brown that had all the channels and they use to give it in the Sci-fi channel always in fact the sci-fi channel use show all the aliens movies back to back and the Predator movies I grew up on alien and Predator 🤗🤗🤗
I rented the dvd from a public library and watched it for the first time 4 years ago. It’s my favorite all time horror movie.

I've got to say this is the funniest reaction to Alien I have ever seen!!! Wifey talked sooo much that I think it was some sort of preoccupation syndrome that came over her as a necessary coping mechanism!!!! It was funny!!! I know I am late, but this was so good!!!

Aliens carries straight on from Alien. Alien 3 carries straight on from Aliens. Alien 3 isn’t popular, but you find out Ripley’s ultimate fate. The best bit of Alien 3 is the 20th century Fox music morphing. It really gives a sense of dread and foreboding.
Oh forgot to mention Brett is cocooned with Dallas too...
Man listen I’m say it here Alien 3 has the best music of the entire franchise and for me it’s the darkest and most eerie music of all the movies since the opening credits of alien 3 u get the sense that Ripley is really doomed forever

I never understood why 3 was so underrated. Great movie.
Alien is a masterpiece. The fact that it was made 42 years ago still astounds me. The mood, tension and atmospheric dread that builds on the ship is just outstanding. Also, to answer your question about the crew. These guys are what director Ridley Scott called “truckers in space.” They’re just a commercial ore transport crew and you get that gritty grimy feel about the ship as a working vehicle and her crew. Makes it more realistic than a pristine shiny ship with a crew dressed in white clean uniforms, etc.
Why do people say this? What do you think everyone was retarded 40 years ago and incapable of making good movies?

OK nobody says it but Jonesy the kitty deserved at least a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, lol. I mean, just LOOK at this on-point expression-acting at 16:18 ! LOOK at those EYES! That expression! 😋
And Jones did all his own stunts.
I heard Jonsey let Donald Trump grab him back in the day to get recommended for the part.
Good movie choice. This is my favorite of the alien series. The soundtrack adds so more dimension to the film. Veronica Cartwright helps bring the suspense to the next level.
The blue haze in the egg chamber was basically some sort of gas with a laser projected through it but spread out in a thin but wide beam.
They were able to do this because the music group The Who was shooting a music video with the laser equipment in the same building complex of sound stages where Alien was being filmed (Shepperton Studios).
I never knew that! They must have been shooting "The Kids Are Alright", very very cool!!!!! I love the thought that The Who were doing those versions of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" while they were shooting "Alien" on another soundstage, that's so freaking cool!!!!!

Wow I love that this was your first video!!! The Alien movies were my favorite as a kid, in fact I remember for my 13th birthday asking for them on VHS, and being stoked because 3 had just come out!!
You're right, they used oyster and various other sea food to make the face-hugger.
That explains why I was so hungry when I saw the facehugger! XD
Having watched a fair few of your reactions now... Mrs Movies has some good intuition! She didn't see that Ash was a robot but called his shadiness early! Those of us that saw this first time round on release had no cultural references and no idea there would be a sequel! it was terrifying concept
4 Alien films plus 2 prequels and 2 Alien vs Predator films would never have existed if they'd listened to Ripley about quarantine. After what we've all been through we all know the value of quarantine better than these idiots and they have all sorts of unknown stuff that they very casually ignored because John Hurt got Hurt...John. Given that I'm amazed the crew lasted this long with their callous disregard for their own safety.
This is one of few movies that I consider to be perfect
And 'The Duelist' And 'Gladiator'. Non Scott...Jaws, Dr.Strangelove...The Shining? Bridge Over the River Kwai?
Close Encounter ref -- the Nostromo's design was meant to be the opposite, sort of, of the Mother Ship from CE3K -- Spielberg described the Mother Ship as an oil refinery at night, with thousands of lights illuminating the mysterious tangle of domes, spires, pipes, etc., a city in the sky inhabited by child-sized, big brained ETs. The Nostromo was like a city-sized mining facility -- dark, oily, dirty, claustrophobic, inhabited by chain-smoking "space truckers" with dirty shirts.
Just subbed due to Naked Gun reaction, and noticed what an amazing selection of reactions you have, so the only reasonable actions is to start binging them from the beginning
“In Space No One Can Hear You Scream”! Arguably Ridley Scott’s best film ever dating back to 1979. Never really cared for Blade Runner. Sorry Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford. Aside from Alien, i love his Academy Award Winner for Best Picture from 2000 Gladiator! What we do in life, echoes in eternity. Love that line!

I love that she started singing the "Close Encounters" theme. She's seen lots of movies....just not the scary ones! I get it! But my gosh, she's on some regimen of terror this year! Bro, throw her a comedy, a Mary Poppins, something! :D She's going to be having nightmares of the alien being possessed by the devil while being pursued by Jason and Freddy through the halls of the Overlook Hotel! :D

Mrs.: There were some really great scenes of the meticulously designed and hand-built ships on the screen, as you were looking on your phone for Tom Skerritt, but that's just me. I was very much into models as a kid and I build computers now, but everyone responds to different things. I have to congratulate you on your reaction to Ash. I've watched a lot of other reactors watch this, and no one, but no one, seemed to notice that Ash seemed weirdly protective of the just-burst baby creature. Felt SO GOOD when you admonished the crew. Pat yourself on the back for the best online reaction to the traitor robot, Ash. Really, you're the only reactor who was ready to reach into the screen and grab someone by the scruff of the neck. Oh yeah, and when you remarked about letting the thing into the ship, kudos there too. (Some reactors were actually like, "Oh gee, don't leave them out there to die...how mean." I mean, give me a break.) Would've liked seeing some of Mother's answers regarding the expendability of the crew because that's a big reveal. Oh, Mr.'s facial expressions, every time Mrs. would ask if this was that or that was this, were funny. Kind of like, "Uh, I'm not tellin' ya," then a coy smile. By the way, I'd like to expound on Mr.'s explanation of sexual overtones in the design. Most notably, and NOT regarding the Nostromo, but regarding the derelict ship infested with the alien eggs, did you not see the phallic suggestion in its shape? And not nostrils, but vaginas. This was the predilection for eccentric artist, HR Giger, whose art seemed predisposed to maybe not-so-surreptitiously connote some suggestion of a sexual body part in his designs; and that's when he wasn't out and out depicting satanic imagery. I'm not a big fan of that type of dark art, but I like the implementation of the derelict ship where the eggs were, and the alien design. Very unique, and, being that the alien was essentially self-serving evil, very apt. For reference, check out his book, "Necronomicon." Actually, DON'T. One comment about how Mrs. was thrown into the corner with no box around her...terrific! So many reactors block off so much of the movie with big, fat boxes, but someone at the Mr. & Mrs. household has a bit of geek-a-zoid savvy. Really liked that I could look "around" Mrs.'s shape and see more of the movie behind her.
Yaphet Kotto as Parker, the black chief engineer, just died on march 15 , this year , at the age of 81. Rest in Peace Parker
RIP Mr. Kotto.
RIP John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton and Ian Holm too, the weird thing is that they died in the same order as their characters in the movie...

Before this film, most science fiction/monster movies proudly put pictures of its creation in ads and magazines. This was the first monster movie where the design of The Alien was kept out of media.
The cast knew the plot regarding the chest burster scene but were not told what would happen with regards to special effects. Only Kane was told exactly how it would be done. The reactions of the others says it all. Those were genuine tears of shock from Lambert. Without doubt Ian Holmes Ash character was the best actor in the entire movie. Holding back his true identity until he went haywire impressed even Steven Spielberg.
I saw this in a Century 21 theater in San Jose California a couple of months after it was released. At the time, this theater was innovative for its wide partial wrap around screen and dolby sound. To this day movie theaters have not topped it.
People often point out how movies have "sound in space," but it's like pointing out the score. The sound is just for the audience to hear, just like the music.
I don't know if the editing of the reactions is just closer or if "Mrs. Movies" really is talking more, but the videos have definitely evolved since this.

I think the local star is up. In the sequel, _Aliens_ , daytime is barely any different from nighttime on this moon, and that was after decades of terraforming (making the moon more Earth-like).
A cool fact about the chest burster scene is that, Ridley Scott, the actor and SFX department were the only ones who knew it was going to burst out of his chest like that. The other actors had no idea and their reactions were genuine. They assumed he was just gonna convulse then die and the baby alien was gonna maybe slide out of his mouth I guess. It was a last minute change.

Wrong - on SO MANY levels. This is THE MOST common misconception and most repeated falsehood about this movie.

They knew the Alien was going to come out of his chest as it was in the script, what they didn’t know was how it was going to be done.

Hey you two. Nice meeting ya's. First time visitor to the channel. I dig reaction vids to the films and series' I've enjoyed and follow a grip of reaction couples, groups and individuals. One of the most pleasing aspects of this masterpiece is its timelessness. I mean, I'm old enough to have seen this in the theater back when it was first released and it scared the HELL out of the entire place. People were terrified, I remember like a dozen of them actually fleeing the showing, some even in tears. Now, here we are, some forty-plus years later where you new teens and twenties have been exposed to the cutting-edge, ultra-realistic gore, terror and mayhem of such series' as *The Walking Dead* , *Chernobyl* and *The Boys* (and pretty much ANY horror film of the last three decades, haha) and STILL this amazing film causes screams and covered eyes, lol. LOVE IT! Definitely gonna see what else you've got up here.

Now go back and watch the 1951 version of "The Thing (From Another World)". It was based on a story called "Who Goes There?" It was toned down for the '50's audience. Alien took much from "The Thing". Then jump to the 80's version of The Thing with Kurt Russel that is much closer to the original story. All three movies are connected. Enjoy!

The Other Sister is one of my mum's favourite movies so I've seen it a couple of times just through her multiple rewatches. She'd leave a DVD in the player and whenever TV sucked she'd pop the movie on for 30-60 minutes till something else came on. If it finished she'd wait till the next day and start it again. The only movies I've ever done back to back watches are Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World, Scott Pilgrim vs The World and The Great Escape. Amazing movies be they all.

I'm not a fan of horror movies as well but I do love Sci-Fi. Every time I see this movie I'm still shocked this came out in 1979, just 2 years after the first Star Wars movie.
This movie still has a very modern feel to it even though it came out about 42 years ago!

Tom Skerritt wasn't the father in Contact, he was the other scientist that gave Jodie Foster's character a hard time, originally was supposed to "go" but stuff went wrong.

He's NOT Human!?" moment. 19:05 The Alien has cut off escape to the shuttle, It's time to activate the Self Destruct mechanism! 19:25 Not everybody got that point. While oxygen IS flammable, air is not. We breathe about 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and around 1% of various other gasses. The air scrubbers on board would have collected any particulates of carcinogens the way airplanes can with cigarette smoke. So, basically, the only risk to everyone would be the standard second-hand smoke.
Also the movie was shot in the 1970's when everyone smoked in films I'm surprised she didn't pick up on that.

I'm an Aussie that LOVES drinking Milk, why is that so weird?! Must be an American thing??? I've heard that from somewhere once before but can't recall where.
When a strong acid is threatening to eat through the hull of your ship, one way to stop it is to place enough material in its path so that the acid is consumed before it reaches the hull (acid does not magically burn everything, it gets used up in the process). They might also have tried to find a material that is not attacked by this acid, such as glass or certain types of plastic. In this case, they didn't have to do anything, however, because there wasn't enough acid to "eat" all the way through the ship.
Alien was inspired by the 1958 film It! The Terror From Beyond Space.

Actually when we watched Predator she realized she’d never seen it and had no idea what movie she watched she thought was predator. 😂

Dude Tremors is awesome. 2 is pretty good as well. They really start going down hill after that though. I didn’t even bother watching the most recent one after the one in the Arctic or wherever it was it took place.

You were on the right track about the theme of the movie. It's more about rape than reproduction. Every stage of the creature's lifespan is a forceful violation of its victims just for the sake of reproduction. Ripley survives in spite of her perceived vulnerability as a statement of female empowerment and survival, even if survival itself is traumatizing. And Giger, the creature designer, took that rape theme further by making all the alien/organic designs very sexual and anatomical. In fact, fun bit of trivia: being the dirty oddball he was, he originally wanted the eggs to open up like a vagina, but the studio said hell no to that, so he instead made it open like an "X" shape because that's really just TWO vaginas crossed together, so really the studio let him make it TWICE as inappropriate without even realizing it. (tbh it was more of just a little inside joke to himself since it was so frustrating having his work be so limited, but that's basically how he explains it behind the scenes and in interviews)
How can you say that her survival was "a statement of female empowerment", when the characters - including Ripley - were written gender neutral..? Ripley wasn't written to be a "strong female protagonist", which is what actually MADE her one. Ripley was written to be the collected protagonist in a chaotic situation, while still reacting to things like a normal human, rather than unnaturally unaffected like in a lot of action movies. When Weaver was cast as said protagonist, the first name came to be "Ellen", but it didn't change anything about the role itself... Alien is a massive example of why this is the best way to make a great character, because it puts the focus during movie-making on making the best movie possible with the most realistic and naturally-behaving characters. Whatever gender-differentiations there may be in their reactions to things will naturally happen as a result of the specific actor/actress portraying the role, making it seem that much more natural.
@@VelkanAngels I can’t speak for the earliest intentions the writers had with Ripley, but I do know that before production began, her role was only auditioned for by women. Hence the old story of Veronica Cartwright slapping Sigourney on the face full-force in the scene outside the medbay because she came so close to getting the role instead. Also, I think all the other characters who disregard/disrespect Ripley despite her outranking them (aside from Dallas) being mostly men isn’t a coincidence. Lambert is mostly just scared and angry at her, but not nearly as dismissive and rude as everyone else. I agree that a good character isn’t written to clearly point out their demographic with a big flashing sign, but I don’t think that means her gender was just a happy accident. The story is also structurally just like a haunted house movie, just in space. And horror/haunted house/slasher films of the time had been establishing the “Final Girl” element to the formula for a while. Only makes sense to write her as one, considering the context and time the movie was made imo. Again, don’t get me wrong. I agree “girl power” characters can come off as obnoxious to the point of being misogynistic, ironically. But I think Ripley is a great example of GOOD female empowerment in film writing. It all just fits so well, and I think James Cameron saw that as well, hence his inclusion of her daughter in his original screenplay to establish the maternal bond and how it mirrors the Alien Queen’s maternal instinct, both of which overpower the hypermasculine chest thumping of the marines.
I’m happy to agree to disagree, though. Thank you for inspiring me to think this much about the writing of two of my fav movies.
I prefer Alien to Aliens and I prefer the Directors cut to the Theatrical cut. I think the scenes with Ripley and Laniard are good at providing context for the animosity between the two characters, it makes Ash seem, if you can believe it, weirder as well. The Directors cut, to me, makes the film more of a stand alone thing though as it leaves less room for a sequel.

Have you seen "The Abyss" (1989) by James Cameron? Its probably his best movie, I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. Its an amazing film.

Do they even make those bird tipping toys any more? I had one when I was a kid.
They are super sensitive thermometers that tip over when they warm to room temperature (the mercury rises, causing them to be top heavy and tip), then the mercury drops when the beak hits the liquid and cools. So they tip back and forth all day - as long as there is liquid. I think what they represent here is that the temperature in the ship is increasing.

I'm 62 now and remember being about 6 or 7 years old when the original Star Trek came out on TV. Loved the Enterprise and the whole universe Roddenberry created. Years later I saw Alien in the theatre and like most people I was blown away. The crisp, well lighted Enterprise with an emphasis on an orderly, positive future had become the main standard in science fiction movies. Alien however had a totally different look and feel about it. The ship the Nostromo was dark and dirty, wet and unkempt. The crew were a bunch of working stiffs worried about getting their bonuses and meeting union regs not heroic clean cut military types of the Federation. Where Star Trek had been bright and colorful, Alien was dark, full of shadows untrustworthy management and an alien creature that was not interested in communicating with or understanding us. There was no use in trying to reason with it, we were it's prey and out only hope was to survive, kill it if we were lucky but survival was the only hope. It ushered in a whole new era of horror sci Fi movies and left the likes of Star Wars and Trek behind as more of a juvenile brand of science fiction. Also it ushered in the era of the tough, competent but beautiful heroine who was usually the only survivor after all the tough, macho men had been killed off. I will say that I had only recently started watching your channel and enjoy it a lot. It is amusing to note how very different the Mrs acts now. It was kind of cute watching her go non stop trying to anticipate what was going to happen next. I'll have to look up her reaction to Aliens one of my all time favorite movies
