The high end sims that exist today are closer than ever to real life simulation. Of course we'll never quite be able to replicate G force (which is kinda essential for real life driving) but it gives drivers a good base on which to build on when they take to the irl track.
I wouldn't be surprised if sim racing started to serve a similar function to karting; being a place where people can hone racecraft and setup knowledge before on to better things.
It's nice to see you guys run sim racing videos every now and then. Maybe we can do something together some time!
>Of course we'll never quite be able to replicate G force (which is kinda essential for real life driving)
Well, don't full motion rigs do a (sort of) good job of throwing your butt around already? Also: VR for full near death experience. I'd say, that it's mostly price of those setups that prevent them from reaching mainstream and changing opinions about sim racing. Sooner or later, as sim games and equipment gets even better we'll see both more sim racers becoming irl drivers, and retiring irl drivers becoming sim racing streamers.
PLS NO PUNTERINO F1 DRIVERS JIMMER! (sorry, couldn't resist)
Haha hello jimmy
Jimmer! Great to see here. Completely agree with you. Even the big sim rigs can’t replicate g force, sure they throw you around and shake the living daylights out of you if you go over a sawtooth kerb. I visit the motorsport capsule every weekend and put two hours in. It’s a £50,000 rig which punishes you for making a mistake hahah I love it.
If their is anyone with an opinion on Sim Racing it's Jimmy..
He kind of a big deal in our little community. Just saying.
So, if you're curious about Sim Racing go check out Jimmy Broadbent's RUclips channel.
Some other really nice people I would like to give a shout out too as well: George Ortner/ Gamer Muscle/ Jardier/ Random Callsign/ Bosh Racing/ Viper Concept/ Matt Malone/ Super Gt (Mostly does Forza and Grand Turismo but an awesome guy)/ South Paw Racer. So, if you're new or a veteran Sim Racer go give these guy's some support.
@Zombie Head The hell are you on about? Never said anything about that at all. Was simply helping anyone who wanted to get into sim racing know some good channels they could explore to find their way. And second I know way more about getting up at 3am to be at Road Atlanta at 5am to help Shane (Main Mechanic for Panoz/ Skip B for around 10 years) to help finish the 5.0L>4.6L swap in the student Junior cars around 2003. Welcome To The Madness yea it helps with reaction times, hand-eye coordination, strategic thinking.

It also teaches you how to make changes to your vehicle to get the extra 5% out of the car to be faster, which doesn't always mean it's got to be an upgrade to the motor per say either :P

Driving Sims are so beneficial, my little bro is turning into a lil prodigy drifter thanks to Asetto Corsa, he practices like 90% of the time in it and rarely ever gets the chance to practice outside of that but when he does, it translates over smoothly and you can tell, he just makes it look so fluid and easy.
I will tell you a little story. My family was used to race on bikes at a time. My dad learned how to drive a car and bikes at the age of 6 with his father and compete on races. But when my mom met him she maid him promise to never go back on a bike or race anything.
Years later, when I was a small child I was used to play gran turismo during days on a PSP. One time, they proposed me to do a stage on karting for 2 weeks. And I accepted it.
It was the first time of my life I was driving something. So instructors put me in the beginners’ group. The thing is, at the end of the day, I was one of quickest drivers around the track even with confirmed ones. In a week we did a championship, and I won it. With in all races, the best lap time. They were pretty impressed. And they asked were do I had learned how to take turns like that ? I simply answered “Gran Turismo”
So for me it is true : you can learn how to drive around tracks on a console or a PC. Now I’ve just got Assetto corsa with a wheel and god it is good !

Now i'm not saying i'm a pro drifter yet, since i just broke my front bumper yesterday but the knowledge of playing for years on assetto passed 75% knowledge in real life
haha that's my plan
I drive a WRX and play a lot of dirt rally, now I'm not gonna say I know how to rally, but the handling characteristics I've learned in-game have translated into real world driving for an AWD car.
+1 for Videogames helping out IRL
@@dxme9190 Those moving seats are trash. I tried a very expensive one at a car show once and it feels nothing like real track driving. It feels like playing a sim while in the passenger seat of an airplane and a pilot watches your screen and tries to pitch the plane around based on what you're doing. Not only is the lag horrible, but the feeling is nothing like real driving whatsoever. IMO force feedback and a rumble subwoofer is all you want, the rest of the motion stuff is useless and completely unrealistic.

GT Sport isn't a full sim but it's pretty damn close to it. The cars are just too stiff and if they fix that it would be near perfect. Of course it still wouldn't be a full sim, but it would be right around the corner.
As soon as you play manual with clutch and stick to the racing line, while also turning all the settings to simulation, you really realise that you are becoming a better driver. The next step is rev marching, heel toe, double clutching, and the full range of breaking techniques. Once you got that down, games can make you (almost) a pro
I went from struggling at braking on forza 4, to using manual and trac off in horizon, to manual with clutch, tcs off in horizon 2, everything off in forza 6, then everything at the hardest difficulty and online racing in horizon 3. Horizon 4 I'm now learning how to avoid cars and hit jumps in fh4. God I love this game

@@spaceman-pe5je i tried ac before and it just didn't feel right. I used a controller tho. I don't have enough money after building my setup, but maybd itf I'll get one :p
I want to add to that from watching pros who have tried simracing, for novices karting(or if your a late bloomer, sure a race school) and simracing goes hand in hand like bread and butter!
rev-matching, heel and toe and double clutching on the sim is nothing like in the real world. In AC I can heel and toe from 6 to 1st flawlessly and double clutch all the way from 1st to 6th flawlessly but IRL it is a PITA.
1-Car Pedals don't have the same feeling, nor the same dimensions, nor the same positioning or travel as a simulator setup
2-What seems to be a perfect rev match in the game, in the car you get to feel jerks, the clutch "skidding" and a bunch of other feelings that you couldn't tell in a game
Whenever I tell anyone I want to become an racing driver with racing simulators, I always get laughed at. It's an uncommon dream to have in Massachusetts, where all the top schools in the US. I'll do anything in ability to become a racing driver.

It's definitely possible.
How old are you? Got a car or motorcycle? Got a job so you can pay for karting every weekend?

It still takes real life balls to send a real life car into a real life corner at speed. It’s easy to feel safe when there’s no consequences to your mistakes.
Jann mar . . . (err... ) kill his first victim in nurburgring. Yea, he was too brave
its kinda a 2 way thing, some people might limit themselves to a game. just bear in mind, stakes are high, but its probably more predictable than normal driving on road. you are tucked in a car, roll cage, fire suit, helmet, grippy tires, tirewall, and everyone is on the same page. racing is danger in a controlled environment and most people dont have to worry because some of these sim racers dont even try at a real car
Exactly. I have some experience in amateur racing. You need balls
I get the same fear when racing In my league or online for example Iracing because it means alot to me and has consequences
There's no need for experience
Racing games is where I first realized I had a knack for racing. I love all games but nothing gets me in the "zone" like racing. From there I moved on to off road vehicles and the occasional family car.
No, but with sim racing games and a decent setup you might gain faster reflexes, good eye at guessing the distances (distance to point where to brake, how much distant you are form another car, etc.), getting used to racing gear box, etc. What it does give you is BASICS FOR RACING - if you have a track car and you ride on a track, plus you race on a racing sim then some of your skills will be improved both ways. Being PRO at anything is about as much experience as possible and that counts for just about everything.

So Forza players will be able to compete in real life demolition derby? Damn.
Not Forza as it's not a true sim. iRacing, Assetto Corsa and somewhat Project Cars 2 are the usual candidates.

Danny Bushaw (wormsdroid), I play with my pc and a triple screen setup, but still have just a regular Xbox controller. I believe the original comment is looking more at the regular online community and not the pro sim. I don’t even know if NFS has a racing sim version like Forza and GT has.
I can fully confirm that simulators help massively in the real world, even basic racing simulators such as a Logitech g27/g29 with granturismo or Forza can provide a good basic guild-line into racing. Of course simulation games like Assetto Corsa, Iracing, Rfactor etc are much more beneficial and much, much more technical and impressive. But even the basic games can provide major benefits.
Even entry level sim racing has a tangible impact on your driving ability, I played the shit out of assetto corsa on a g920 and got pretty decent at drifting, I went from that to a drifting lesson I got as a gift and I was able to whip a gt86 around a box 4 times in a row first try, I have absolutely no sideways time behind the wheel other than that lesson and my sim setup (I'm 19)
Yep, I started with Gran Turismo and migrated over to Asseto Corsa and I can confirm that GT definitely prepared me for AC.
Aussie Viking II I started with granturismo at the age of 6 and was very, very good at it. By the time I was 8 I jumped into a go kart and in my first race out I beat a state champion by the name of Keb Evans, the rest of my karting career was extremely successful. By the age of 12 I made it into the granturismo academy competition twice, but due to my age I was declined. I then swapped to Assetto Corsa, Rfactor etc. and I jumped to cars at the age of 12, and I didn’t miss a beat. I taught myself basic racing techniques such as heel and toe through a simulator. I’m glad to hear that another person is having the same successful results from basic simulator programs.
Games like Dirt Rally massively helped me at correcting slides and actually translated super well to when I went to Dirtfish rally school for a day.

Wholeheartedly agree with the points in this video. Back when I used to play Gran Turismo 2, I would often remember the driving tips in that game and gradually transferred them into real life driving. Racing games definitely made me a better driver overall.
Not a better racing driver... monumental difference...lol
I used to have a Logitech force-feedback wheel for Gran Turismo 3-4 and I miss it so much! I may not be a professional racing driver, but I do feel it's made me a better every day driver since I was fooling with that wheel back when I was too young to drive. lol it was hilarious that when you let go of the wheel at any time the wheel would just walk back and forth but I could only gain control of a car when the power was on. When I lost power it was impossible for me to accurately drive the car. The end came when the power wires finally broke off of the circuit board and I didn't have soldering tools to fix it. So I gave it to someone who did and he enjoyed it for years more to come. Should have seen all the dead skin that accumulated on that thing!

Yes, racing sims can make you a pro driver.
Looking over here in the US rather than overseas, William Byron is a perfect example. Got his start in iRacing, then with his father who owns Liberty University, got his start in Legends cars, then started climbing the NASCAR ladder with K&N series, then to Trucks, winning the Xfinity championship the next year, and now won the Rookie of the Year in the Cup series with Hendrick Motorsports. Sim racers can now work their way up without a lot of dough.
EDIT: Forgot this. Although his dad still gave him money to race rather than race teams noticing him, sim racing was still an integral part of his dad deciding that he should start his career.

What I've learned through playing Gran Turismo all these years, is that, at the very least, you get to learn the fundamentals of racing. Such as cornering and breaking, and following racing lines. I dare to say, knowing that has helped me understand real life driving a bit better.
Sim racing will replace karting. A lot of people say "sim racing will not 100% replicate real racing" but does karting replicate driving gts, rallys or F1 cars? No but you will learn the fundamental stuff which the most important part not just in racing but anything that requires skill. To be great you to nail the fundamental things first.
GT sport can so yeah!

I play with steering wheel controller and it really helped when I first drove a car in real life. I knew what to do and didnt need to ask my dad lol.

Just look at people like Jimmy Broadbent who was driving video games in a shed and now has driven real cars on real tracks (and now lives in a house)
I really like this and love the idea of it. I definitely agree.
When I am planning a day on the track, I spend the night before playing racing games. It definitely sharpens my reflexes. But I am still really scared of how fast my car is in real life for the first couple of laps.
What Thomas said is really interesting, on how it's easier to take a gamer, used to racing sims, and whip them into physical shape so they can race, over the physically fit guy who does a ton of sports but no driving.
just got the same wheel as you, hell it feels good
As stated by others in the comments, although it is true that connections and extremely high amounts of money are required for racing, sim racing can still be expensive when you consider all the gear you'll need to create a system good enough to compete with those that strive to get the fastest lap times in sim games. Considering you need to be at the top of the leaderboards to gain some ground, if you're not dropping over 1k, you can't compete
Nicolas Hamilton is truely a good example and an inspiration
You forgot about William Byron in the NASCAR Cup Series! He came to Hendrick Motorsports from winning a ton on iRacing.

It works! I used to play Mario Kart. And now I have been speeding with mushrooms and throw banana peels at cops if they chase me.
For practicing, its good, even F1 drivers did sim racing to improve their skill. But for true atmosphere, you need to get into pro racing career. Also, if you crash at sim racing, your body just fine, but its different story in real life.

If there is a device cam simulate the physics of being inside a vehicle, plus playing a game have no fear factor, you can late on braks everywhere and can always rewind
Another benefit with sim racing / racing games is that you can play it all day long every day unlike gokart which takes more time to set up and get ready for and all that. with racing games and sims you can just start your computer and plug in your wheel.

There are actually many professional drivers that use modern day sims to practice as well as multiple Motorsport teams looking further and further into sim racing players and the sim racing community, ie iracing
Professional racing leagues should implement some kind of scholarship program like other professional sport programs. That would allow kids who dont have the money to get into racing and help save the sport we love. I just dont know how it would work.
Dude... look at all the videos out there where a sim "racer" goes and drives a real racecar... Look at the lap times and compare to what real racing drivers turn on the same track in the same category... It DOES NOT make you a race driver... lol. The value in sim, for a real racing driver, is the visual perspective you get for a track you've not yet driven. And "maybe" shift points, brake points. There are no Gs. There is no pressure of injury, which can hamper performance. There is no comparison.
@@hawkgeoff I mean they should implement a scholarship type deal like college scholarships for sports. For kids who wanna race or be in the racing industry.
@@anonymous_forester2681 Not with these silly video games. If you want to go and put out a scholarship for youngsters at the karting track that might actually work... but the sim racing is just a means for people who don't have any desire or drive to pretend they are racing drivers. Hell you can go buy a used Legends car for less than many of these dreamers spend on their sim "rig"...lol.
