3 weeks of driving new 2024 Rav4 Prime XSE. When the battery is depleted, it's costing me about 90 cents for the roughly 10+ hour charging at home plugged into to a standard wall outlet. And getting 40-50 miles of range on that charge right now during the winter here in Oregon, while running the heater, seat warmers, etc. I like it a lot. This replaced my 2016 Mazda CX3 GT, which I also enjoyed to drive. But was missing my 2007 Prius' mpg. That Prius was the best car I've owned over many, many years of driving.
I am quite happy with my 2022 Prime so far. Basically a full EV vehicle for daily commutes and even weekends around the city. A great ride on long family vacation road trips not having to worry about range anxiety, hunting down chargers in remote areas, or waiting hours for a full charge on some of our 1000 mile + trips. Just hit 20,000 miles a couple weeks ago.
I have 2022 prime too, I can get 50 miles out of an EV charge but 80mph that gas engine is maybe 32 mpg at best. I just don't like how it doesn't have any temperature gauges for battery or ICE coolant.

@@DjMastadon it depends on how much you drive. In pure EV mode it goes 40-50 depends on climate. After the 40-50 miles is depleted, driving it hybrid mode will not completely re charge the hybrid battery, so you need to plug in every day to take advantage of the EV 40-50 miles. Here in Newmarket, Ontario (Canada), there is only two charging stations available (both with only 6 parking spots), for a city of 55,000 people. And on the weekends there is a lineup 10 cars deep trying to get into one of those spots. If you drive an EV on the weekend, there is a good chance you will be waiting 10 hours or more just to get charged up so you can get home. With the RAV4 Prime you can just use a local gasoline station instead of using electric propulsion.
Yeah Electric Charging Infrastructure in Canada is not quite there yet for a full on EV car tbh, this is great for home charging without the need of an upgraded charging unit!
Really found your review better than most … so much more details…. Would love Comparison between the different levels of RAV4’s and what options are optional… planning on ordering my RAV4 would be great to have your opinion on the various options or upgrades .
Nailed it with Tesla, they're a tech co, not a car co. My family has an old Model S and it feels unnecessarily clunky, low visibility, ZERO manual buttons (have fun taking it to the snow only to freeze inside because the touch screen is glitched = no climate control), no back windshield wipers, horrendous cluttered touch screen UI, after a few years its range is much lower, and I can go on. It can accelerate fast though due to being purely electric which is its only real pro to me.
It doesnt switch to a Combustion mode , but rather a Hybrid mode which uses both the Electric motor and the ICE engine. The only time Engine alone is used is in CHG mode
Dang good luck bro. I just I got lucky. I wanted Prius Prime but they didn’t have the color I wanted. Got a rav4 Prime instead after the original dude fell through due to his credit lol hence I got the RAV4 Prime the same day. Good luck though!
I am in Vancouver and i just received my 2024 RAV4 Prime XSE and i already love it more than i thought i would. It gives you some of the benefits of a tesla without being a Tesla. and i dont care what anyone says, the biggest cost of ownership is depreciation. I will be able to sell this in 10-15 years for $10,000 Minimum more than a Model Y. Japanese built, their factories make the most reliable cars. Not everyone cares about tech or thinks its always the best. In the time it takes you to get into your screen and adjust the steering wheel with knobs, im already done with my manual lever. It's impressive when you first go look at the car, but youre not adjusting it daily, nor is it faster. I think Tesla Model Y is better at some things than my Prime but overall it is not a better package/value IMO. Tesla are popular and everywhere in Vancouver now, and i'm not impressed with looking like an Uber driver.
Awesome video with amazing fuel economy. Unfortunately, 99% of Toyota dealerships in Southern California are asking ridiculous 7500 to 12K markups on these. And those that sell for MSRP have a 2 yr wait list.
If your near la county go to longo toyota they only sell at the sticker price and they let us negotiate a bit more off. They seem to have a few last time I went but I'm not sure how fast they sell them
Highly recommend the Rav4 Prime although between MSRP increase and elimination of fed handout since 2021, the Prime is over $10k more expensive now. Quality design for sure and an excellent ride. Just what ever materialistic Americans need to be happy.
Wait, what do you mean elimination. Fed still offers $7500 tax credit for qualified EV's up $80,000 msrp SUV and for qualified income levels well over 200k for married couples. You can also pair it with state funded programs.
I would still prefer the tesla because of it is still because I drive 15K miles a year and tesla saves me $7,500 over five years with zero tail pipe emissions, plus Tesla is more fun to drive
The amount of damage end of life batteries might create is not considered in your equation. There's no recycle structures for used car batteries and those lithium ion batteries are not environmentally friendly when they are disposed. Might do more damage than good with an EV car than a much smaller battery hybrid/plug-in hybrid, not mentioning even if the batteries don't work, the engine can still drive the car.
Yeah I ask my wife if she wants this, Tesla model Y or a Lexus Hybrid SUV. Long story short, wrote a $52k check in April on a 2024 NX350h, she loves it.
I have owned a Tesla Model Y Performance for 3 + years and it has been extremely reliable… the only service I have needed is roadside assistance for a flat tire and I had a flatbed truck on site in less than 1 hour after contacting Tesla, so your points on Tesla service and reliable seem to have a slightly skewed sample size.
I couldn’t agree with you more, I have been driving a 2023 P model Y, I spent zero dollars on maintenance or problems. Though I do have curb rashes on those 21 inch wheels, it’s my fault totally. I also drive a RAV 4 hybrid as a company car. It is also very reliable but, I prefer to drive the Tesla anywhere. Mileage anxiety only once had 5% left on the battery indication. Charging to 86% at home with solar $4 without it close to $18. Tesla Superchargers is expensive. Used twice.
First off, awesome job and informative video! You have swayed me to want to take one for a test ride. The only things I would have liked to see that you didn't cover are seeing the vehicle with seats folded down to show how much room there actually is and seeing what, if anything, comes with the vehicle (spare tire, inflator kit, charging cable, etc). I want to use the vehicle for camping (in the car) and driving in remote places so those kind of things are important to me.
Thanks! I appreciate the advice and would try to include shots of the seats folded in future SUV videos! Yeah I love car camping in remote places as well, youre right.
@Sleepygarage Awesome, thanks for listening to my feedback! Thanks in part to your video, I bought a RAV4 Prime SE yesterday and already put 200 miles on it driving it home! 😀
we don't have this trim in UK 😢, but i got a Rav4 Hybrid Excel, had a Suzuki Across(Rav4 )Plugin hybrid and now I will get a Rav4 Gr Plugin Hybrid. very good review
If you manage to use EV most of the driving, the engine is not used much and it will last for long time. I just changed my Prime oil after 10k mile but the oil looks clean.
Nice real world review. Thanks for your professional quality efforts. We wanted a RAV4 Prime to replace our 2012 Lexus hybrid, but the 3-4 year wait time here in Western Canada is a bit of a problem. No way I am paying $25K over MSRP for a gently used one either. We opted for the NX450h+, with 1/3 to 1/2 the wait time. Can't wait to get it. I like your comparison against the Turdsla Y too. Why anyone buys that frumpy junk is beyond me, but hey, its their money. :) Enjoy your Toyota Stormtrooper!
I get it that you love Toyota and so do I even though I've only had one Toyota amongst >10 cars so far I've owned in my lifetime. Not sure where you got your story on Tesla being junk. If you have never owned one, please stop repeating rumor, or think before you speak. I've had my Tesla for 5.5 yrs 60K miles and so far I have NOT spent a single penny for repair or maintenance of anything or any kind, no oil or oil filter or brake fluid or radiator leakage to deal with, NOTHING. I've replaced the tires at about 45K miles but that is normal consumable not repair or even maintenance. I did spent about $4 to refill the windshield fluid one time if you must count that as maintenance. Everyone that I know love their Tesla for its torqueness and extreme low or no maintenance. Never need to visit smelly gas station and basically never to waste time and money at "dealer" for maintenance. I am ready to replace the other car with Tesla early next year.
With current models, the navigation stops working after one year of ownership unless you pay Toyota $15 per month. But the dealership won't tell you that in advance, obviously.
Well, Toyota just announced the 2025 model with no changes except the name. They got rid of the Prime name and now it's called plug-in hybrid(PHEV). No other changes I see listed. Perhaps it will be redesigned for the 2026 model.
The Lexus version of this is the NX 450 + and while the styling is nicer and it it’s more luxurious, this has more range and strangely it also has a much nicer instrument cluster, This one is all digital and look more up to date to me. The Lexus has a nicer infotainment system but costs a lot more. I have a 21 Prime and I look forward to seeing what Toyota comes out with for the next RAV4 PHEV.
Thank you for sharing such an in-depth and great review 🫶 We just got one and that’s how I found your channel. I wanted to know more about the car! This is very helpful and my husband did say it was in the top rated crossover suv category in consumer reports!! Ps our dealer said it’s a unicorn meaning they are hard to find.
Glad it was helpful! It is my favorite top rated sub 65K SUV! Yeah it is quite hard to get your hands on one now with gas prices this high, but it depends on where u live, CA has plenty. Can I ask what state or country you got yours in?
Yeah I have a 2020 CRV regular gas touring model but if I would want a hybrid I would turn trader and get a 2024 Toyota rav 4 because it more better and has a spare tire which the CRV does not, I am elderly and if I have a flat I can get road service to change tires, because I ha ve heard to many complaints about not having a spare tire.
The issues with Toyota prime are : 1. Because they are made in Japan, they dont get federal tax credit. People do a lease hack but depends on dealers and contract is complex to execute. 2. We have to deal with high markups and painful dealer negotiation. 3. Advantage is that range anxiety, specially in snowy conditions is nil.
Every EV should add solar cell in every place possible in the car. Sometimes for many days people keep the car unused. So it will provide free energy even in those situations. In remote places it will at least provide energy to juice up your mobile or small gadgets
If I had one of these, I’d probably buy one tank of gas a year. Also, Toyota actually knows how to build a car. The only downside I see is that the side view mirrors are only manually retractable. It’s better when you can retract the electronically from inside the car.
Hello, I drive about 43 miles to work, and I do have an option to charge at work. If I charge twice/day to travel to and from work, does it have detrimental effect on the longevity of the battery. I drive about 35000 miles/year, so I put on miles fast.
Hi great question, I believe it's actually more beneficial to battery longevity the way youre charging it. Batteries such as your smartphone last longer when you dont let it deplete all the way as often. However I dont think it'll do that much in the long run, but in theory charging it at home and at work is better for the car.
I had a Tesla Model Y and it was a piece of junk. Had it for a few months and sold it for a profit to some dope. Got a Rav4 Prime for the wife and a Lexus NX F Sport PHEV for me.
@@dino91001 Most people lease their cars dude. It is probably $1200 month for both cars and $10k lease down payment combined. Anybody can afford that. Now writing $110k checks for both car is another ball game.
@@jml9550don't know about anyone being able to do that lol. Depends on income and expenses. To pay $1600 a month on cars, I'd say you'd need a 200k income. If you don't have a mortgage and childcare expenses, then your income can be far less than that.
I have a Tesla Model 3 and love it, I have had it for 1 year and spend $88 a month to charge it at home. i commute 100 miles a day, 4 days a week. It's funny that you knock Tesla the whole video in comparison to the Rav 4 prime. You should have spent for time comparing to other PH vehicles. I am looking fora Rav 4 Prime for my niece.
Not my car. I've heard some dealers have stock but it could be up to 2 years. CA has more stock than most the country though so it shouldn't bee too long.
You’re not using just the combustion engine when your initial battery charge is depleted (approx. 42 miles). You are using what Toyota calls their Synergy system, which is the ICE motor and electric motors combined. So basically your RAV4 is operating like a non-plug-in Toyota hybrid.
My current vehicle, 2004 Toyota 4runner, is coming up on her 21st birthday. I suspect end of life is coming and I don't want to be stuck making a quick decision with what's available. I've been looking at hybrids but I don't think I can go to a sedan. I'm in socal as well and it just seems to be so much better to sit higher (plus my joints thank me). I was really hoping the 25 hybrid 4 runner would be better on mileage, but it looks like despite it being a hybrid, it'll get similar mileage on a smaller engine. So I'm looking at the rav4s since they can get almost 40 mpg on the hybrid models. Then I stumbled on the prime. The majority of my driving is commuting and local. My work is about 50 miles round trip and currently costs me about$25 a trip in my 4runner. I think I'm going to do some test drives with the prime. I thought about a Tesla but I want another 15-20 year car. Tesla's seem to have a 5-10 year turn over. And I get that it's less maintenance but I'm still not sold on 100% ev - esp with the news of Tesla's questionable build quality. Seems like there's always something coming out about problems with them. But coming from a 20 year old lumbering truck, I think this may be a healthy compromise of higher seat and cargo space vs mpg and cost to operate. Plus it's a toyota - the damn things usually run forever if you maintain them. I'm curious if there's any other maintenance you have to do with them as a phev - is it any more than a normal hybrid (oil, brakes, etc). Does the ev side require additional maintenance?
Thank u for sharing! 4Runner is awesome but yeah I feel u on these CA gas prices and how the new 4Runner is still a bit of a guzzler, and yeah my joints love SUVs too lol. Full EV is a bit of a burden long term now with how fast tech moves and its reliability and all that, a 50 mile round trip commute would be Pennie’s to charge at home with a RAV4 prime and when you go anywhere far you don’t have to worry about expensive charging. I don’t think there’s any difference in PHEV and Hybrid ownership over 10-15 years, both are safe options but I’d definitely try to get a Prime especially with the tax credit in CA.
@@Sleepygarage I actually picked up a new R4P XSE a few weeks ago :) I love it! Been doing some good quality of life stuff so far but she drives great! I managed to use a little gas on the highway...end of trip report said 99.9 mpg. lmao.
@@supermodestmousethat’s awesome congrats dude! 99.9 MPG! The car is basically putting money back into your pockets as u drive it compared to the 4Runner haha. Hope u enjoy it!
I disagree, it is not Lexus like refined. Not even other Toyotas. Just test drive one and it was VERY loud in the cabin. Louder than Teslas which is a low bar. I’ve owned a Camry and a Highlander and those were way quieter than this. The power + efficiency combo is great but we don’t have to lie about being Lexus NX refined.
Apples and oranges. Charging Prime at home and Tesla at Supercharger. This should be compared to charging a Tesla at home, in which case Tesla saves substantially. Add solar and it's a no-contest.
The slow wait times are annoying at Tesla superchargers when doing road trips. I'm going to sell my 2023 Tesla Model Y LR and get a RAV4 Prime XSE. Those 1-2 minute gas fill ups are going to be so nice again when doing long trips. Today I timed my gas fill up on my Ford Transit work van at a Chevron gas station and it took about 2 minutes and 30 seconds to fill 22 gallons.
I have owned 4 different beemers, 3 5 7 and an i3. We just purchased an Rav4 prime xse plug-in, 2024. It handles as well if not better than any of my beemers! We also got the premium and technlogy package. Don't believe this, than go and test drive one.....
I have a 21 Prime and I thought the novelty would wear off in a few months. 3 years in and I still enjoy every drive. I never tire of driving electric and I actually enjoy the engine when I’m taking a longer trip. I think you are going to be very happy.
Sounds awesome. Too bad they're not available. The Model Y is. I see one about every month or so at our local Toyota dealers and it's $5k+ over sticker.
Yeah that’s true but, I left it pretty full mostly but if u don’t expect to go anywhere with gas all that much try and keep less gas in but ethanol free if it’s going to sit in there for a while
Yeah I ask my wife if she wants this, Tesla model Y or a Lexus Hybrid SUV. Long story short, wrote a $52k check in April on a 2024 NX350h, she loves it. I would’ve chose the Prime XSE, but the Lexus is what she wants.
That is an odd thing to focus on, with so much else going on in the RAV4 Prime package. Don't people find it frustrating that Tesla doesn't provide an interior with their cars? 😁
If you're not to sure buy a Rav 4. No more Going back with things going wrong with your SUV choosing a plug in hybrid you can even charge it up while you drive a dual fuel petrol or electric system it's a tough vehicle used all over America ready for any road conditions in the UK wake up enquire you won't be disappointed.
The Prime has way more performance, 302 horsepower compared to 219 on the hybrid. The Prime is more of a sports oriented performance vehicle with the benefit of EV mode and good efficiency.
You can get a $6,500 cash rebate if leasing, then option to buyout later. I'm going to sell my 2023 Tesla Model Y LR get get one of these RAV4 Prime XSE.
The WORST factor about the Prime is how if most of your commutes are short where the motor never/rarely runs, it's the worst case for the health of your motor. Any gas motor which runs infrequently, or for only short periods, all tend to never reach operation temperatures long enough for the combustion by-products (water, unburned fuel, hydrocarbons) to not condense into the oil and reduce its lubricating capacity, and form sludge. Short commutes are considered Severe Service for gas-only motors, and oil change frequency is recommended more often for the above reasons. A weekly highway run where the motor oil reaches full operating temperature for a minimum of 30-miles or so is mandatory if you want your motor to last. Handles well? Compared to what? The RAV4 is NOT a 'sporty' handling vehicle. SUV's are still relatively tall and heavy vehicles, and as significantly more prone to roll-overs in a crash. Yes, I've owned Toyotas in the past, and I like the RAV4 Hybrid (non-Prime), but I have no delusions over what it is.
take a look at how they integrated the screen in the regular highlander vs how it looks in the grand highlander. Also take a look at a jeep grand cherokee. It just seems lazy to stick it on top of the dash@@jasonmorehouse3756
"Way better than a Tesla Model Y" Maybe if you can get your hands one one. Wait time for Toyotas plug in vehicles is 2-3 years. That means you can potentially say goodbye to any government rebate as well as loyalty interests rate reductions. Toyota still continues to take deposits on these cars and make people wait for a car that may be irrevelant by the time ones brand new 3 years dated vehicle is ready for pickup and countless payments.
They have them at dealer lots here in SoCal. $50K to $55K means no buyers. I have a 2021, RAV4 Prime but back then it was $7500 in tax credits and $2500 in California and Edison rebates. Today it’s $zero tax credits and rebates.
@@janozkk exactly right, without incentives the RAV4 is hard to sell at those prices. Personally I just bought my wife a new NX350h, $52K OTD in cash. If I buy the prime XSE, it would be $57k+ or 66k+ on a 450h+

Thank u I appreciate it, will be reviewing a Hybrid version soon!
Thanks for sharing!

Wait time on Prime is so long that you will get the 6th gen then, which should be better.
Dang good luck bro. I just I got lucky. I wanted Prius Prime but they didn’t have the color I wanted. Got a rav4 Prime instead after the original dude fell through due to his credit lol hence I got the RAV4 Prime the same day. Good luck though!
How in the world do you have only 20K subs?! Very very high production quality!

@@kerrydaniels8460 No it doe not. This vehicle is not in the eligible list.
@cricfan12 It does for lease to own i which you can just purchase under a guise if lease and just convert over to a purchase and apply credit.

RAV4 Prime, best value out there
Yeah I ask my wife if she wants this, Tesla model Y or a Lexus Hybrid SUV. Long story short, wrote a $52k check in April on a 2024 NX350h, she loves it.
Over priced vehicle
Used twice.
I’m sold on the Prime, great review !!!
Good choice! Thanks!
A+ Great work with the video. This really helps me with my decision to get a Rav4 Prime.
I would rather have a Tesla model Y, but overall this is a very solid car.

Enjoy your Toyota Stormtrooper!
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it. The NX450H+ is an awesome car too, just a better Prime haha. Couldn't agree more with the 'Turdsla' haha
Wow didn’t know that! Kind of sucks but I guess most people use CarPlay now
great breakdown, thanks for sharing this
Great video man

Excellent review. Do you know what model year will Toyota be doing the next RAV4 complete redesign? Thanks, a new subscriber.
Well, Toyota just announced the 2025 model with no changes except the name. They got rid of the Prime name and now it's called plug-in hybrid(PHEV). No other changes I see listed. Perhaps it will be redesigned for the 2026 model.
Awesome review! Thanks!
Thank you!
Rav4 2024 premium xse with packages OTD is 65K they are selling almost 5k over Msrp if you can find one !!!
Thank you for sharing such an in-depth and great review 🫶
We just got one and that’s how I found your channel.
The RAV4 hybrid and Venza are both great, both have spare tires.
That makes sense. Thanks for the comment, the spare tire is handy!
The issues with Toyota prime are :
Haha yeah
Hello, I drive about 43 miles to work, and I do have an option to charge at work. If I charge twice/day to travel to and from work, does it have detrimental effect on the longevity of the battery. I drive about 35000 miles/year, so I put on miles fast.
Hi great question, I believe it's actually more beneficial to battery longevity the way youre charging it. Batteries such as your smartphone last longer when you dont let it deplete all the way as often. However I dont think it'll do that much in the long run, but in theory charging it at home and at work is better for the car.
Hey get a camera lens hood for your interior shots
Is there one for iPhone?
I had a Tesla Model Y and it was a piece of junk. Had it for a few months and sold it for a profit to some dope. Got a Rav4 Prime for the wife and a Lexus NX F Sport PHEV for me.
Cap alert
That’s why my wife doesn’t want the model Y. I offered to buy her one but she didn’t want it. Wrote a $52k check on a 2024 NX350h instead.
what do you do for a living 😭
@@dino91001 Most people lease their cars dude. It is probably $1200 month for both cars and $10k lease down payment combined. Anybody can afford that. Now writing $110k checks for both car is another ball game.
@@jml9550don't know about anyone being able to do that lol. Depends on income and expenses. To pay $1600 a month on cars, I'd say you'd need a 200k income. If you don't have a mortgage and childcare expenses, then your income can be far less than that.
My one day is one day ❤❤
I have a Tesla Model 3 and love it, I have had it for 1 year and spend $88 a month to charge it at home. i commute 100 miles a day, 4 days a week. It's funny that you knock Tesla the whole video in comparison to the Rav 4 prime. You should have spent for time comparing to other PH vehicles. I am looking fora Rav 4 Prime for my niece.
What was your wait time for the Prime in SoCal?
Yes this is correct.
I managed to use a little gas on the highway...end of trip report said 99.9 mpg. lmao.

hi, with or without premium package? Without premium package it’s 6k Canadian less.
The rav4 prime hybrids how many minute when you charge electric
Cost of maintenance?
Not much on these Toyota hybrids. Regular oil change and hybrid battery fan filter. Brakes last a long time.
You get 2 powertrains to maintain
there is nothing to maintain on hybrid system, only the hybrid fan filter needs clean or replacement every year. Oil change are same as other ICE car.
Around 1200 to 1600 per year for the first 10 years
2024 ? Nice when will they be available in LA
Should be 3-12month wait in LA
SF Toyota has them, but allSE. all the XSE are sold.
How much gas do you drive with? More weight = less elec efficiency
Yeah that’s true but, I left it pretty full mostly but if u don’t expect to go anywhere with gas all that much try and keep less gas in but ethanol free if it’s going to sit in there for a while
Is it possible to mount a rear bike rack on the RAV4 prime?
Is there a built-in to hitch with the proper electrical connections? If it is not stock, is there a aftermarket option?
How is it offroad or snow?
Decent as 4wd. Great compared to any 2WD. 4wd is only available at slow speeds. No drive shaft to rear. Only electric motor.

I have a regular Rav4 Hybrid. So, because the Prime offers approximately 50 miles of EV that makes the $10k difference? Lol.
No way.
Yeah it’s unlikely anyone is gonna make back 10k on gas lol
worth it if you can incorporate the 6500 current incentive to bring down difference to 3500
@@calltraining7289 Prime has 302HP vs Hybrid 219HP. That is worth it to some people as well for the extra fun factor.
The Prime has way more performance, 302 horsepower compared to 219 on the hybrid. The Prime is more of a sports oriented performance vehicle with the benefit of EV mode and good efficiency.
Can we do tax credit ?
The info screen just stuck on top of the dash is so ugly.
The “heads up display” can be turned off
It's a floating screen that's the style now, looks way better and allows bigger screens with easier access

I love mine at it’s at the perfect height to keep your eyes on the road it’s very well built and integrated
Depends on what you are located, plenty here in the CA dealers and seller at MSRP. Payment is irrelevant, cash all day every day.
