2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime Review: Perfection... Minus One Thing

  • Let’s test drive and review the 2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime XSE!
The Toyota RAV4 has been around since the mid-90s, when it debuted as a unibody SUV in a world of body-on-frame ones. It was meant to mix the comfort of a car with the size of an SUV, and these days, it’s a common thing - so common (and popular!) that in 2023, Toyota sold nearly 435,000 RAV4s in America alone.
The RAV4 Prime is the upscale, plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4. The base model starts at about $44,000, and this RAV4 Prime comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 302 net horsepower from gas and battery power. Power goes through a continuously variable transmission to electronic on-demand all-wheel drive, and acceleration is impressive: The 0-to-60 time on this car is 5.7 seconds.
The RAV4 Prime’s infotainment system also has wireless Apple CarPlay, as all cars should, because I’m not using the built-in navigation.
This RAV4 is from the fifth generation, which arrived in 2019, so it’s getting old now. Toyota’s also debuting a lot of new models and new generations, so it’s not a huge stretch assume that a new RAV4 is on the way.
But this RAV4, despite its generation’s age, is great. It looks good, drives comfortably, has speed, and is easy on the fuel consumption. The black accents, crisp red paint, double sunroof, and timeless styling make it look really tasteful (and ready for adventure). Plus, the RAV4’s electric-only range in EV Mode is 42 miles, which is the length of the average American’s commute. Odds are, you can get to work and back with no gas at all.
The RAV4 Prime works for a lot of people. Whether it’s the best choice for you is up to your personal preference, since Honda, Kia, Subaru, Hyundai, and so many more automakers also have plug-in hybrid SUVs. But it’s a really great car, even five years into this current generation.
And hey, if you’d rather buy it used… there are tons of them out there.
Thanks for watching my RUclips channel. Enjoy the drive!

Another banger of a video! That EV test was great and the animations/background history in the beginning really added to the experience.
I enjoy this format but will admit I personally prefer the full in depth review one (although I will say the amount of detail you go into even with the 5 likes/1 dislike is really well done).

With the way we use this vehicle, we are getting 94 miles to a gallon. Calculated for every tank a gas in the prime. we used almost 2 tanks in the Rav4 limited. It is a great vehicle.

i bought a 24 Rav4 Prime XSE about a month and a half ago. My commute is about 60 miles round trip. So I'll ev to the freeway, HV on the freeway, and then EV off the freeway and then back. The car says i average about 90 mpg in my after trip report. I don't use my whole battery either. In the month and a half i've had it, i've put almost 1500 miles on her and used about a tank and a half - even with 3 trips from san diego to la and back. i love this car.
Also, I'm 6' tall. I can sit in the back comfortably even with the front seats pushed all the way back. honestly, i love the car. I'm coming from a 20 year old 4runner so all the gadgets and gizmos are leaps ahead of what i was using. Also, people complain about the road noise, but it's actually quieter than my 4runner. I have the radio up so i don't really hear it. I'm really hoping she's going to last another 15-20 years.
finally, my little rescue dog who usually hates cars, actually likes this one. so it's doggo approved.

I've had my Prime for 6 months. The first couple of months I noticed the charge was maxing out at 36-40 miles. I'm guessing the cold weather had something to do with it here in North Jersey. This summer I've been getting 46-48 miles of charge during the warmer weather and a few heat waves. The Prime seems to perform best when the air temp is in the 70s from my experience. The Heat and AC will subtract some miles, as well as highway speeds. Right now with my regular driving and daily commute, I'm getting 42-45 miles of EV only range and about 1200 miles between fill ups.

We bought the same car (in white) last fall, to replace my wife's daily driver. I love driving it- the technology/comfort/cargo/etc makes it such a nice car to live with. I must have the seat dialed in for me (5'11") as we regularly do a 2.5-3hr drive and i've never noticed the seats being uncomfortable. My only complaints, aside from the price, is that the passenger seat always feels a bit higher than it should be, and I wish the blind spot monitors would beep if you hit the turn signal with a car in your blindspot. It hasn't been an issue, but my ND miata has this and our previous mazda 3 had this, so i've become accustomed to it. Plus the car beeps for a million other reasons, it seems like the blind spot beep would be a no-brainer.

Great background music, BTW, and yes, great review!
As you alluded, a road-trip test of EV-Mode range might not be very representative, since the vast majority of road tripping is driven on gas, but interesting information anyway! In town, as you pointed out, it’ll be better.
For whatever it’s worth, our 2017 _Prius_ Prime started out getting about 33 miles driving in town, but after 9 months, that dropped, in three distinct steps, down to 21, then bounced back gradually to 25. A few other Prius-Prime owners have also seen a drop, but few have seen it go down as far, nor bounce back.

      @@AlanisKing, you bet!
A few clarification points, regarding my Prius Prime’s EV-range changes over time:
      - The differences in range really are differences in the actual range, not in the “GOM” _estimates_ of that range. It really does drive a shorter distance.
      - The difference really is how much it charges into the battery. It’s not just climate control burning more energy nor other parasitic effects; it really is cutting off the charge sooner.
      - The Prius Prime’s drive system is essentially a scale-down of the RAV4 Prime’s, with a couple important exceptions (especially importantly, not having the RAV4 Prime’s rear motor). So, most of the basic mechanisms involved are equivalent/analogous.

Your nephew might be a little aggressive with the gas pedal. Easy does it & he will easily get 42 miles. I just bought a Prime XSE last week and I'm already exceeding the 42 miles range Toyota says I'll get. I'm like you I get around 50 miles in EV mode and I drive in ECO mode which helps. I believe I can probably get an extra 10 more miles of range after my Prime is broken in.

Love my 2024 Rav 4 prime!!! EV mode charges to 50, sometimes 51 miles. I have gotten about 45 miles in EV only mode with it in city driving mainly. Main issue I have with it is volume control pause issue when using android auto. Definitely they need to fix that!!! Otherwise, super comfortable for me on long road trips and a very stable, quiet, phenomenal car!!!

My decision to buy one, Prime that is was met with a wait time of 3.5 to 4 years. Initially I thought I’d go for it. Then I started to wonder what model year I’d end up with and rethought the vehicle entirely. The next day I went to my local Honda dealer and bought a CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring. My salesperson advised I might have to wait about 2 months. It was delivered in 6 weeks. All good.

That's most Toyotas (as well as many other mainstream vehicles) in North America unfortunately. I had a similar complaint with my brother-in-law's Corolla SE. The car handled decently for an economy sedan, but the steering was far more disconnected than my old 07 Honda Civic Coupe. Funny enough, my husband's 2015 Yaris has some of the more connected steering of any Toyota I've driven. It's not amazing, but gives me much more confidence, and compares favorably with my old Honda. I think the Yaris steering is different than most American-aimed Toyotas since it is primarily designed for the European, Japanese, and other markets where small, affordable city cars are bigger sellers.

Doesn't it have a tach? (To tell when the gas engine kicks in.) That was my question, how high the RPM climbs when your stone cold 2.5L engine fires up at highway speed. The price is a heck of a jump over the regular hybrid. $ 10K buys a lot of gas for a hybrid, or if I opted for the SE Prime, I could probably get a Limited Hybrid. I know there are some rebates, but now they seem to apply to leases. Discouraging that the seat comfort was flagging at 90 minutes. I wish they'd spend less on panoramic sunroofs and more on seats, including lumbar support for the PASSENGER side. Passenger side lumbar seems to be tough to find in cars that aren't upper tier. Toyota did add some sound insulating glass (windshield and front sides) to the Prime. Curious if the '25 hybrid and Prime will use the Gen 5 hybrid drivetrain, as they did in the '25 Camry, and (I think) Crown Signia.

    • @AlanisKing
      @AlanisKing  2 месяца назад

The normal-setting display (and the one I used) replaces the tach with a dial showing charge vs. energy use. So, if I remember this dash display correctly, you see when you're using power (accelerating) vs. gaining power (regenerative braking), but not the RPMs

I have one of those for more than 3 years, I like it but the wind noise is more than you wan to hear, those bars above the roof would make the noise more, I wouldn't recommend them, when you hit the gas the engine is very noisy, that is a way toyota make to improve the MPG as petrol engines have better MPG at higher RPM "revultions per minute", the transmission is not CVT, it is eCVT it has no belt nor pollies, it is toothed gears and electric motor, it is seamless, you don't know that you have transmission until you have to change the gear, you don't feel the transition between EV and HV mode unless you look at the screen "or you hit the gas" the EV range is at least 40 miles in the city in good conditions, I charge regularily and I don't worry about the gas prices
I don't find the seats uncomfortable, 2 weeks ago I drove it 150 miles no discomfort, never felt discomortable sitting in it for hours, something I do on weekly bases driving in the city during the weekends
