Riding on the street with my S.O.B. (swarm of bees) Nine, my pedaling (as well as backpedaling) grew resistant to the point that I had to walk my bike home. Taking my bike to Wheel World in Culver City, Ca, my mechanic thought that wear has resulted in the drive side of the rear hub to the point that the hub was rubbing against the drop out. When he placed a washer next to the drop out and held by grease, then replaced the rear wheel assembly and locked down the thru-axle, the pedaling became normal. My question is, is this a sign of normal wear, or is it abnormal for the I-9? And, would a rebuild of the hub restore reliability, or is a rebuild in this case futile, and should I just get a new hub? MTB, thanks for the video.
Mark Della many thanks! I am glad you found it informative. I get my wheels from a company called November Bicycles. They are based out of Newport, RI, but ship all over the country. Top notch wheel builders that only do wheels.
Most 3 pawl systems use a really strong spring and bigger teeth which ends up causing a lot of drag. The Hydra hubs use a lighter spring with smaller teeth which reduces the friction but also gives you more points of engagement.
@@MTBTravelReview hello sir! I also wanted to use this on my X Caliber 7 (2021) The problem is that XCaliber 7 uses Quick Release Boost hubs in the rear. Does Industry Nine have a Quick Release Boost Hubs?
@@whodafakru7668 Check I9's website. They do have some boost QR options and if not, they have end cap adapters that can make it work. They should be able to help if you reach out.
A wonderful review!!! but the hub makes a horrible and very annoying sound. I like to hear silence from the bike so I can hear the sounds around me. Would you happen to know of any other quite hubs besides Onyx and the other sprag clutch style hubs?
Pretty disappointed with the Torch hubs I bought a couple years ago. The 11 speed freehub body is aluminum and after a few months of riding I had to pry the cassette with tools to get it off. I purchased the White Industries hubs and love them. I would prefer to have a totally silent hub though, I can't figure out what people like about noise. Noisey Motorcycles and cars, it's just annoying.
Wasupwitdat1 Mofiki my torch hubs have been bullet proof, so maybe there was some sort of defect. It happens. As far as the sound goes, if you don’t like it, don’t buy the hubs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@MTBTravelReview Like I said that was about 3 years ago and I remember a lot of complaints about the same thing. Hopefully they have stepped up their game for everyone. I built up a few wheelsets with White Industries hubs because I really like them and the company. I wouldn't go back to an I9 hub.
@@MTBTravelReview As I said I like to try a completely silent hub and after or conversation found the Project 321 hubs. Any thoughts about those? Have you heard anything about them?
@@MTBTravelReview non drive side was easy, but is there a trick for the drive side? It would not pull out. Some videos described a removal tool and yet others destroyed some O-ring. Was hoping for any clarity.
@@javari I don’t know of any magic trick or tool. If it’s stuck I usually just use the ole wrap it in a towel and use a wrench trick. Nothing that you can destroy. It just gets a bit snug on there.

I've been running I9's for a few years now. The best wheelset I've ever owned. 🤘🤘
Horns High Mountain Biking agreed! Love the buzzzz
I’m currently running hope pie 4 hubs and I’ve modified the pawls and now I’ve gone from 44 POE to 88 POE.
Nice!

That is a great questions for Industry 9. If reach out to their customer service team. They are very helpful, in my experience.
@@MTBTravelReview I appreciate the tip; will do.

Does 6 pawls == twice the friction losses when freewheeling? Energy to make that sweet sound had to come from somewhere.
Manfred Adams one could assume so, but could I tell you I feel a difference... nope! I love em

and which is louder, a hydra with oil or a torch ?
Hi, where we can buy this wheelset now?
On the internet
Could I run these on a X caliber 2021?
You can run any hubs on any bike. The only thing you need to know is what the spacing is.
