      Years ago, someone asked for a skin shader on some RPG game. Fans said it's unnecessary because there was diversity: elves, humans, dwarves.
      One other fan said, "yes, all the same shade of white."
      Wild how they forget about the continents filled with different colors, but green is regularly abundant...

      @SailorDoom21 2 дня назад +5

      @@thehutch7728 I wish it was always that easy, and for some folks it is and I’m very happy for them bc we should be able to have things like this. But ultimately its not a matter of people say we can’t do something and we have to abide by their rules for some reason, its the fact that we’re being told that we allegedly don’t belong our own culture because of some innocent interest that may even bring out the best of us creatively, socially, intellectually, etc. because some stranger at some point was going through their own identity-based difficulties and saw a little black kid drawing their D&D character and said “that’s white people shit”.
      Then that confuses us because it’s saying that either we can’t be who we are AND enjoy what we enjoy at the same time, and are unworthy of either one anyway.
      There’s totally also like. Blah blah blah the need some black Americans feel to create a cultural identity separate from the race of people who have been the dominating socioeconomic class in the nation for centuries and how flawed that plan is for any number of reasons blah blah blah probably some stuff about toxic black masculinity as well blah blah. But yeah. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    John Blanke is a pretty minor historical figure in the grand scheme of things, but he's interesting in that he challenges a lot of preconceptions we have about black people in european history. He was a trumpet player in the Tudor court of Henry the eighth, having arrived from spain with his first wife Catherine of aragon (makes sense, considering the iberian peninsulas relative position to west africa). He was NOT a slave, in fact he was paid very well (three times the annual wage of a palace servant), even successfully requesting for his wage to be doubled by the king. He lived in england, married in 1512, and is even featured in surviving paintings of court events. He also wasn't even the only african musician in the kings court, since we know there was at least one other.
    Your video made me think of him, so i thought I'd share one of those stories that hasn't been told very loudly.

      You mean John Blanke. Black trumpeters weren’t uncommon in that time, and even earlier throughout the centuries, but it’s definitely a huge accomplishment that he could successfully petition a king to get an increase in salary and better chambers. He even got a wedding gift from Henry VIII, which wasn’t something just any old court musician got at the time. He was clearly very talented, and I wish history knew more about his life. It would be amazing to know anything about his childhood, and to find out what happened to him in the end.

      I’ve debunked this urban legend. I’ve come to the conclusion that horror movies created the idea that ANYONE would be silly enough to check out a creepy noise in the dark. They created this because in a horror movie, if the character doesn’t go check out the creepy noise in the basement, split up into groups, or call out “is someone there?”, there isn’t really a movie anymore. So my findings were that NO ONE does this. Just that there have been more white people in horror movies than blacks.

      also, white people still suffer with the residual trauma of the renaissance period. instead of having a culturally sensitive outlook on their suffering like we do with all other cultures, we instead just make fun of poor white people for being dirty and having “red necks.” these are the descendants of the people who you have the right to celebrate, and yet you cannot extend that celebration to the poor white people who held much of this culture on their backs, and still do. we live in willful ignorance towards them because it’s trendy and normalized, we call them stupid, we refuse to understand their struggles, and we increase their fiscal and social suffering year after year out of indifference.

      I went to a Renaissance Fair for the food. Met a kid I went to high school with and his wife. I hadn't seen them in 15 years and he invited us over for a pool party the next day. Pull up to a normal looking house in the suburbs but the sides have 12ft tall palm trees and plants. Go into the back yard and it's unfucking real. A 4 tiered deck off the back of his house with fire pits and a outdoor movie theater. At the end of the decks is a giant bean shaped swimming pool with a waterfall and cave and swim up bar. After talking with him he bought the house and spent just under a million dollars on the backyard. He sold some patents to Boeing and a Japanese computer company relating to GPS. I tried to look it up but I couldn't find it. I said he's probably the richest person at that Renaissance fair. He informed me that there are a couple people that fly In for the fair on private jets. He said he does a lot of networking there.

      Well, I think there can be a bit of truth to the stigma... Like the DnD space was for a long time lowkey misogynistic, homophobic and quite racist as most DnD enjoyers back in the day were het white guys. Like nothing is physically stopping you from joining, and they're not going to tell you no, but every NPC you meet is going to be racist against your orc, all the characters but your gay bard get to flirt at the tavern, and the DM insists that sexual assault gets to be a thing in the campaign because realism. Just a whole lot of very strange sentiments and microaggressions that create a very unwelcoming atmosphere.
      That's not the case nowadays obviously. Overall there's a general air of inclusivity and sensitivity in most DnD spaces. I think that shift has happened in many places, including LARP adjacent activities like renaissance faires!
