- Organist Olivier Latry improves on a submitted theme, he was handed it moments before he played the tune. He improvised this work on the spot. The cover image is Craig Cramer the Professor of Organ at the University of Notre Dame with Olivier Latry one of the organists at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris. This was recorded at the University of Notre Dame in the Debartolo Performing Arts Center on the Paul Fritts Pipe Organ in Reyes Organ and Choral Hall.
I wish more people knew and appreciated organ virtuosity on this scale. I have such gratitude for Olivier Latry, he has added much joy to my life. This - I can't wait to share it.
I completely agree with your comment. I have shared his music with several people who know nothing about organ music, and they loved it!
His improvisations NEVER sound like improvisations. They are always great masterpieces
It definitely sounds like an improvisation... I do not criticize the performance which is a great one, but you see many tricks of "modern improvisation" in it, always used by Mr Latry and other performers. THIS is an improvisation that definitely does not looks like one: ruclips.net/video/tOQvxK813J0/видео.html
Nowt like a bit of "footed registration" @ 6:04. What a mind that Mr Latry has, stunning! :)
The organ is the ONLY(*) instrument which asks his player to use his four members !
(*) yes, I know: so do drums ... but drums isn't music, yeah ? ;) (joke, obviously)
-- or quoted from an excellent organist (Michel Chapuis): --
- "What is the pedal? Oh, the pedal is just an accessory that allows the left hand to turn the pages..."
mmmmh sorry Master Chapuis, but it seems Olivier Latry found another use :)
HA! Olivier Latry was so fast with that foot move that I did not even see it. EVEN WHEN I was editing!!!!
Clic on the 6:04 link in Mike Sole's opening post ;) then play the video, it's right here!
Utterly stunning! This confirms M. Latry's status as one of the best. Period. I've also never before seen an organist use one of his feet to push in a stop while both hands and the other foot were otherwise occupied!! Bravo! Kudos to the organ builder, too, as M. Latry gave their handiwork a severe test!
Brilliant, brilliant musician. To hear him live and in person is such a treat. One of the best of our time.
The best improvisation I've come across, both structurally and dynamically!! All done in real time as he played!! Spontaneously coming up with great variations and takes on the provided theme he's never seen or heard before!!
I just love him! What a master! What a pleasure to embarque on Improvisation with Olivier! Merci cordialement!
Latry’s Brilliance is simply beyond stupendous. All of us who improvise can learn from this. Another lesson one can take from this is that the primary success of any instrument depends -- first, last and always -- on who is playing it.
6:04 Latry uses his foot to shut off two stops! Never seen that before.
yeah of course its very common to see one or three stops being shoehorned (technical term) but two is pretty rare
That stop change at 1:35, like lightning
Still electrifying. Stunning. OMG!!!! And I listened to it six months ago just to see if it was as good as i thought. CVD
6:05 XD
Imagine getting the chance of writing a melody for him to improvise on! A thing from my dreams!
At 1:33, I supected he was a ninja... The kick at 6:05 confirmed it.
That was awesome! I have his rendition of the complete organ works of Messaien, which I love, and this performance fits in nicely with that music. Spectacular!
Brilliant Improv. Thank you for sharing. CVD
Olivier is just everything
Peut importe l' instrument, M. Latry réussi toujours à le sublimer avec des régistrations hors du commun! J' adore :)
Absolutely spectacular!
A living master! The truth is self-evident.
I have also noticed the extra-ordinary stretch Olivier Latry has - an 11th! - together with other notes in between - from C to F 8ve.
Big hands. I hear that's fairly common in French men.
Flawless to me.
Bravo, Mr Latry!!
Simply amazing!
I particularly liked the deselection by foot at 6:06 . . . .
Amazing and incredible!
Here again! ? !!!
Brilliant, brilliant musician. Fabulous! ES tut wohl.
Brilliant improvisation!
stunning! such a treat! thanks . . jeff
Appreciate your kind words
I would love to send him a theme...
Very nice improvisation ! Lol whats he doing with the stop 8:32?
At he end 11:22 he will put the total stop out... :)
Ah c'est brillant!
Masterful!
1:35 speed like a spider or snake
Fantasztikus
Using the shoe to kick the drop bars... what kind of organ player does that
A complete genius of improvisation.
Fabulous!
Tout à fait dans le style français de la danse improvisée...
That theme sounds very Anatolian, don't you think?
Here's where the theme comes from. It's an Eastern Christian hymn:

Is this from his 25 Oct 2014 recital in South Bend?
No it was in February 2014.
C'est magnifique
One of the few to equal Marie Clair Alain. On the other hand that theme didn't give him much to work with.
LMAO 6:04 WHAT
Russian Theme! Plagal harmony.
Excillent !! Genius performing.
but i am sure i would enjoy it in the church
A combination action truly would not hurt anything. Paul uses an electric system with mechanical key and stop action. What a pity this instrument doesn't have it. Budget constraints? Who knows. I'll bet Bach would be the first to use it.... if he had it.
While I don't disagree with you, M. Latry seems to have quite effectively proved the point that an instrument of this size doesn't absolutely *need* a combination action. It was certainly refreshing to see someone who wasn't just selecting the memory channel for "concert improvisation #5" and then pressing the "next" button on the sequencer every two bars ...
True. One of the purposes of this instrument is its use as a training organ, not for organists only, but for the crucially important skill of page turning and registration as well. One need only look at clips from the Netherlands and at Daniel Roth's registrants at St Sulpice to appreciate this.
Tough to play without a crescendo pedal, which could have done just as well. Lots of modern harmonies mostly dissonance and composition chords versus single notes techniques, which wouldnt make sense to a conservative congregation. The end of the world apocalypse was somewhere in the middle.
I find it too tense, and nervous
OK to each their own.
