Hehehehe - you know you've made it in the organ world when you have Daniel Roth turning the pages for you.
Its so fun to see him play because usually you dont see the titulars or other famous posts in Paris playing each other’s instruments like this. Its awesome
Nice to see Daniel Roth turning the pages for Prof Latry: he is a wonderful humble man and a brilliant player too.
Surprised the music is there. I play Reger from memory. Otherwise I can't keep track of all of the notes.
He did not really seem to look at the music.
@@robertgift Play Reger from memory. Of course you do.
@kirinphoebe1 It takes 4 chaps to run this thing !
He throws him a wonderful look at 7'40, as if to say, 'is that really what's in the score there ?'
Only thing better than playing this organ is to have the master, Daniel Roth, be the registrant, anticipating and opening/closing stops precisely when you need them to be! I hate he’s retired now, but he earned it!
Wonderful, how many people are involved. Such a powerful feeling of making music together!
Of all the amazing things about this (of which there are many) it's that the organ doesn't run out of wind--at all--during the biggest, loudest parts. I keep waiting for the wind to sag, hoping it won't, and being so pleased that the wind can keep up with the demands. Maybe I'm just used to organs where the wind supply is barely adequate. The St. Sulpice organ is so strong. So great.
You know you're in the right place when you see a master like Daniel Roth turning the pages for somebody else. Olivier Latry is a god of the keyboard. Sometimes I'd rather hear his improvisations than what's on the program.
Voir 1:54 dans ruclips.net/video/AGL38moFUtU/видео.html
I'm sure these two guys have ESP. They don't say a word but Roth is anticipating Latry's every need with the stop changes and, I guess, introducing some that even Latry may not have thought of. Two minds of their calibre at one instrument. Bloody marvellous!
You can't gone wrong when Daniel Roth is at your side! Well done!
Two of the greatest organists at maybe the greatest organ! Wonderful.
Two of the absolutely best organists in our time!
This extremely special and refined instrument seems to me capable of receiving over its keys all the possible organ literature - past - present - and future.
Two of my favourite musicians in the same screen on one of the world's wonderful organs !!!!
The sight of Daniel Roth sitting right beside him, pulling stops and turning pages without a murmur, is awesome! I'm sure there are any number of other organists who either wouldn't even think of doing such a thing (it would be beneath them!), or who certainly couldn't do it half as well! Bravo! Tres magnifique!!
A man of little ego and serious talent. Lesser men than Daniel Roth rely on ego. Bravo.
I toured Paris and her churches/organs with my organ professor a few years back, and we met several of the major organists in the area, including both Latry and Roth. I enjoyed them both very much; they were very nice. But I have to say, Mr. Roth was one of the most delightful little men I have ever met. He truly made an impact on me-and, talk about a skilled organist!
Wayne Robinson I was wondering that as well
Two legends in the same performance-space simultaneously and not an ounce of ego anywhere. True masters!
What a wonderful mess !
FINALLY Reger has been performed in France, and on the most magnificent Cavaille-Coll Organ!! I've been waiting a long time for this to happen! Thanks Mssrs. Oliver Latry & Daniel Roth!
(Very few realize what a teamwork this was. Cavalle-Coll organs have no memory levels, settable combination actions, or crescendo pedal. EVERYTHING has to be done by hand, and it takes several people to get it right).
And isn't it amazing how the pauses to change registration work so well with the music?
@@Velostigmat yup... this music needs BREATH... and pauses OR it sounds like ONE big mess... which it's NOT!
Latry is very intense and dramatic in this video. And, as always, it is so beautiful to hear what he plays.
Wow. Always amazing. What a rare treat - both Roth and Latry!
The final page in D major is absolutely fantastic.
I love how it takes an army to manage that beast of an organ!
Once again, absolutely wonderful. I have heard this piece performed many times, but never with such feeling! The quiet passages I find nostalgic, particularly in the acoustics of St Sulpice. Wonderful performance!
+Roberr Risk Generally, Max Reger's music modulates quickly and continually which distresses me greatly. I can handle this opus because: (1) the cantus firmus in the pedal provides tonal stability, (2) its minor key and slow 3/4 rhythm are reminiscent of Bach's great Passacaglia in C minor, and (3) this performer could probably make any piece of music sound inspired. What an unusual trinity of Reger, Roth and Latry flanked by two registration cherubs.
Excellent video - both of these organist played at Our Lady of Refuge too!
This is a historic and epic video.
Amazing ! Two genius on the same bench (and a future with Pierre-François of course :) )
That was OUTSTANDING! One of the best things I've seen on RUclips! Serious! I've been to St. Sulpice & heard Daniel Roth right there next to him, as well as Olivier Latry at Notre Dame. To see them paired up, or should I say teamed up, and with all four of them, the were able to make that piece come to life. BRAVO!!
I imagine if a film existed like this of Widor and VIerne
EXCELLENT WORK!
Can I like this more then once?
pipe-organ will he show us his mastery on other works?
than*
its endless piece of music no matter how many times you listen to it.
Latry on Saint Sulpice! That's new for me. Never seen before!
Thanks for sharing :)
+MegaDani141 But a fully usual phenomenon is - that Daniel Roth is sitting next to the player! :-D
+SP741000 In this case it is in turn unusual that "le Maître" does not sing along ;-)
+SP741000 I don't know who'd be the most nervous - Roth or Latry!!! What a pair on the same bench!
+marsvltor2 Yep, it's a bit like watching the "Organolymp" from even further above. :-)
Great piece, great organ, great people, great work!
Thank you so much for this amazing contribution!
Thanks for sharing!
Ah what a great video, to see the great organist Daniel Roth to be a stop assstant for Latry. Thanks for uploading
Latry is the rock star of the organ world! If they sold posters of him, I'd have one on my wall. What a tremendous artist! And a gentleman too.
What a thrill and a delight to see these two maestros together. Superb playing by M.Latry and like a duet with M.Roth on stops.....and all on one of world's great organs. Bravo!
Besides sounding just a feast for the senses, the visuals of how difficult it is to manage that fully manual organ with very unique registration layouts for feet and stops. It took me some time to feel (almost) comfortable with it. Four registration assistants for hands AND feet!! Totally cool. Thanks for the post.
Merci pour la musique ! Bernard Geiter
PERFECTION
I doesn't get much better than this. What a wonderful video of a fantastic performance.
Long may this magnificent instrument remain in all of its pre-computerized glory. The sight of Roth and the other two assistants, working in concert with Latry, is not only fascinating, but deeply moving.
Latry makes Reger sing!
-MAS
Well done, Amazing Organist and wonderful coworkers. Teem Work for the glory of GOD, the Music, and Reger. 💛
Would have sounded absolutely glorious out in the cathedral. Thank you, Pierre-Francois, for sharing this.
+ds1868 says: _"St Sulpice is a local parish church, not a cathedral."_
Who cares what the religious myth's personnel are? I am referring to how live the space is.
Everytime very entertaining to see all those people busy in full concentration and commitment at the organ console. Great music piece too.
ffff to pppp A tremendous instrument
A very moving performance. I also like hearing the mechanics of the ventils, stops, action, etc.
Such a pleasure to hear Reger on a CC played by one of the leading french organists! :)
Any videos of DR or SVCC playing at the Notre Dame (and Latry turning the pages)?
It's an EARGASMIC performance in all manor of listening - an absolutely fantastic expression and command by Olivier Latry of being in touch with the music ( as usual! )
All that talent and experience on the same bench, with two assistants who are very good. Superb
Olivier Latry has a biography and is a good reed on how he got to where he is today.
He is the leading organist of one of the most important cathedrals in the world and this video shows us why. Latry is one piece of talent, in full control over the pieces he is playing and he actually didn't need the score to perform. Fantastic !
Pierre-Francois you are an amazing combination action!
Haaha
I would pay to be a stop-boy for these organists! :)
They look like old schoolfriends but they are brilliant musicians. Thats what I like...
Sounds awesome!!
Beautiful piece of music!
Not only one of the greatest organists of our time but an incredible regard for all humanity. We are all made greater by his presence.
Two Greats sitting together!!
SO FULL of Drama... and suspense... grand playing at its very best!
This is historic!
Excellent - AMAZING! - WOW!
This is awesome!!
bravo
thank you for uploading organ music from St. Sulpice and there are not only great organists playing, but also scrolling and registering 😁
The great Reger's great Introduktion und Passacaglia d moll, an obvious tribute to the great Bach's great BWV 582 Passacaglia by the great Latry on the great St. Sulpice organ.
Bijzonder bedankt voor deze prachtige opname. Twee toppers naast elkaar: Daniel Roth en Olivier Latry.
Dat mag van mij vaker gebeuren.
The most animated I've seen M. Latry.
I play this fromemory. No distraction of reading the music.
merci damiel
Watching Latry playing REGER is impressive...before Dupont was the only French organist i knew who plays reger. Hopefully on some day we will hear regers "BACH" op. 46 from Notre Dame with Full organ ;)
Extremely entertaining as well as being great !
Hubert Heinrich
Concentration, Cooperation, Lots of dynamics, Well done!
Max Reger - Introduction und Passacaglia in d-moll (would be nice to write in the titel to find it on YT)
Absolut grandios!
Fantastic! Fantastic and Fantastic. Obviously 88 deaf people
Wonderful piece....never played better!
Wonderful!
Magnifico!💓👏💞💓👏
Great teamwork and performance! Love the moment at 5:08! And two greats on the same bench, one playing and the other just "helping." This is terrific!
Latry...wow
Brilliant!!!
Génial !
Amazing!
How many assistants Sulpice organ needs for the organist to play? Nice co-work ,
Latry rocks.
Oh my! I echo all the other comments about having Latry and Roth together, at Roth's instrument. But what about the concluding passages, with all five manuals mechanically coupled! That required considerable finger and wrist power and subtlety. An absolute masterpiece of composition, registration selection, and performance, not to forget stop-changing.
As it's 20 April 2019, today, I wonder where Latry and his co-titulaires will be playing for the duration.
c'mon guys, tame the beast!!
Ça calme.
Crazy that you need four highly skilled people to play one instrument.
Okay, i am not an organist and I am ignorant but what do the metal "toe studs" do? Are they not a form of combination action? If not what are they?
Wow! Just Wow! That all of the great French organists have played all of the great French organs is presumed true - here's proof. M. Roth paid his colleague the compliment of not chortling and humming along during the music, something that is usually part of his musical persona.
viajando fuerte!!!!!
So what, exactly, is written on those sheets that the assistants read off of? I would think it would be terribly difficult to keep track of with this many changes!
