Glad I found this video because this is a real issue no one talks about. Unless it only happens to certain brands of resin🤷🏻♀️ I was inspired to do additional tests because of your video! I use the cheaper uv resin from amazon and it peels off regardless if it’s on a shiny side or the sanded side. I think resin just doesn’t adhere well to this plastic in general. If I remember correctly, regular 2 part epoxy acts the same way. The modpodge method works great but modpodge can be finicky. I tried the gloss sealer spray and it works great. Super easy, dries fast, and you can seal a bunch of charms at once.
I didnt think about the plastic itself! (especially since there are different brands of shrink plastic!) Thank you so much for your input! :D There's a lot of trial and error in crafting and its great to have more info from other people's experiences!
Kermit Plays Kahoot I use rustoleum. However, if you are spraying over sharpie ink, I would seal it with mod Podge or use a lacquer/enamel spray, or else ink will bleed
Thank you for being so blunt. I feel like a lot of people would rather sugar coat it but crafting isn't always easy-peasy and more people should talk about it.
Resin does not stick to plastic that's why we can use plastic molds when casting resin, what you can do to solve all these issues is to incase your charm inside the resin. Just let it run down the one side when doming and then when you are done with that side flip it over and dome the other side making sure that you connect the resin with the resin on the other side. WALLA a charm that will never come part :) Good luck. I love the voice hahahahhahahah
Coming back here again because I want to redo my shrink plastic project. Been thinking about resin but it’s a bit costly where i live and kinda afraid it might peel off too. Anyway thank you for the tips! This is the only vid i could find offering a good doming tutorial. 💕
I’m wondering if you can use a base coat for gel nails or something like that. Reminds me of how polygel or gels can peel if the prep isn’t done. I’m curious if that help at all? Lol 😂 I do my own nails so it reminded me of that. The top coat will also bubble up under a cute lamp I forget what you have to do but there’s a way to prevent that too
Thank you so much for this video! I was planning on getting some shrink film as I already had resin and keychains and I didn’t realise that the mod podge was so important in it lasting, so thank you again!🥺
hi! in the minute 10:55 there was micro holes in the surface? I'm using uv resin for my acrylic charms but everytime I cure the resin appears this micro holes :(( (sorry for my bad english)
You have to color the charm before baking, right? Do you mod podge the back as well or the color doesn’t rub off? Thank you for the info, very educational!
Yes! Color the charm before baking. :) And as for the back, I think it depends on what you are using. Like chalk pastels would need to be coated and if you used washable markers, you would probably need to coat it as well. Acrylic paint or permanent marker wouldn't need coating on the back. But it doesn't hurt to take the extra step if you can! ^_^
Hi! Do you need to add resin or mod podge etc for this craft? Or can it work and still be nice and smooth without it? What if you used colored pencils or sharpies? Because I don’t have any mod podge, resin, nail polish, or anything. But I still really want to make this craft.
for shrink plastic in general, you don't need mod podge or resin or anything! U can just use colored pencils (on the rough side) or sharpie and it'll work perfectly fine. It will be smooth to a certain degree.. it depends on what level of smoothness you are satisfied with I guess. The only reason I use resin and mod podge on top is to make it more durable so the colors don't fade or rub off and sharpie doesn't scratch off overtime :)
For me when I used mod lodge to coat the charm before the resin, since I used colored pencils, the mod podge made all these little cracks and it ruined the design. Do u happen to know how to fix this?
the cracks could be from creases made by the mod podge if the layer wasnt smooth? like brush strokes? I'm not 100% sure. But you can check out this recent-ish video by Amy Made which goes into my depth about shrink plastic: ruclips.net/video/7h0Bwk66g3o/видео.html
Very useful info for me, who is just interested in doing this kind of thing. (I’m still collecting supplies and have not yet dived in and tried anything) I wonder if you have a link to the best place to get shrink wrap. I ordered some from Ali Express, and still don’t have it (ordered before Thanksgiving). Thank you for showing your failures, and reacting to them in such a funny way. Gave me some giggles, because I swear way too often for an ER nurse. Lol

Jasmine Joachin I personally didnt at the time I filmed this video and I haven’t had any issues, but I was talking to another crafter and she said that she’s actually had experience with it popping off the rough side! So I think it’s best to play it safe and add mod podge on the back as well. It might take more time, but it doesn’t hurt, right? 😅
Mod Podge peels off shrink plastic easily. It's like peeling white elmers glue off your fingers. I will never use it again as a sealant for shrink charms. :(

@@farawaymercury YES! I saw it! It looked like you worked on the rough side of the shrink plastic which actually doesnt need any prep. You can directly put UV resin on it with no worries :) But my personal preference, the directions in my sumikko book, and shrink plastic crafts I've seen from other people, sharpie is typically used on the smooth side to get a crisp line and 3d-ish effect and colored on the rough side so the colors can hold on. So this tutorial is to help with doming the permanent marker to make it last. Not necessarily doming the rough colored side since it doesnt always need protection depending on your medium. And actually hearing about the pieces curling, I think it might be that you layered the UV Resin on too thick at once? Something similar happened to one of my medium sized resin pieces. I made something with epoxy resin but domed it with Qiao Qiao UV resin and it curled up. Cheap UV Resin shrinks, and when it shrinks, it takes whatever its holding/gripping onto with it. On top of that, it heats up a lot when curing (like you said as well) so your pieces easily bends to the UV Resin's will. Usually, applying and curing several thin layers instead of one thick one will help prevent the curling effect. If not, just stick with padico. Padico doesn't shrink all that much

Is it ok to use the gloss mod podge for colored pencils instead of markers?
Why don't you dip it into resin??
I hear Mod Podge turn yellow over time or after being in sunlight over time. Not sure how true. Anyone knows
Yeah, I wanted to use dimensional magic but a lot of people in the reviews are saying it yellows!
i saw a different video where you can seal the charm with super gloss mod podge and THEN you can use resin and dome it
Resin, especially UV resin, yellows over time. Using a flame to remove bubbles only exacerbates this problem.
