Alina's story: Risking her life to escape Ukraine with her pets

- Alina and her mother fled their home in Mariupol, Ukraine with their three cats and just the clothes on their backs. For five days, the women trekked towards the Medyka border crossing between Ukraine and Poland, carrying the cats and praying every step of the way that they would survive another day while shelling exploded overhead.
When they arrived at the Polish border they were quickly met by members of IFAW’s disaster response team, who checked the cats’ vitals and brought them to the veterinary clinic for vaccinations and microchips.
After the procedures, IFAW team members set up Alina and her mother in the back of the service tent where they could get some rest, grab food, and warm up. It was the first time Alina took a moment for herself in over 30 days.

I'm so amazed that they spot lighted the stories of people saving their fur babies. Thru all the wars until now, was there ever mentioned publicly about people saving their pets during war times. I'm so glad these stories have come to light. I'm so glad to see others from around the world helping to save the innocent lives of those beloved family members. Many prayers and blessings to those affected and those helping out.

This is so sad, I know how she feels, I could NEVER abandon my pets, I'll either not go and stay with them to take care of them as long as I could, or I'd take them with me, but NEVER could I think of abandoning them, just leave them behind to fend for themselves, they are more family to me than my own family has ever been! God bless her!
I have been through a similar situation becoming temporarily homeless with 5 cats. I persisted though and did not give up on them or myself. I just laid to rest my last two a couple of years ago at ages 18 and 14. They helped me stay strong during my ordeal. They are not just merely pets, but family. People who are so cavalier about animals don't have empathy and don't care. They are selfish and self centered.
I donated to the cause. It's not much, but I hope that more people will join me in this way.

I admire this woman more than I can say.
This has to be as hard on the pets as it is on the human who cares for them. They don't understand that their home was invaded for no reason. They just know there are explosions and smoke and fire and bodies of people killed in cold blood. It can be traumatic for them.

I've survived two hurricanes, one of them named Katrina, and I would never leave my babies. I had four kitties during Katrina and it breaks your heart because they don't understand. Pets are NOT disposable,!

I don't think its completely wrong that people sometimes view their life over animals, I just see its sad that they're in such bad conditions where its necessary to think that way to survive.
I'll never forget watching people board a bus and their pets left sitting on a bridge during evacuation of Katrina hurricane.
Next to that the worst thing I've seen is the baby's who no longer cry that just sit slumped over in high chairs. Because nobody has listened to their cry's before.
I would be the one left sitting on the side of the road with all the animals.
Only in China has the wet markets boiled dogs alive because the adrenaline makes the meat more tender.
I am no more important than any other animal.
If you leave a behind a heartbreaking anything.... Well then.... I hope the same is done to you.... Compassion is courage.
