    With rumblings that we might see GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of the Nintendo GameCube. This console followed the Nintendo 64 (N64), was succeeded by the Nintendo Wii, and had many games that boasted comparability with the Game Boy Advance (GBA). Another version of the GameCube was released under the name Panasonic Q, though this was short lived. The console was the home to many Nintendo franchises, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros, Pokemon, Mario kart, Mario Party, Metroid, and was the birth place of Pikmin and Animal Crossing in the west. Through our analysis of the GameCube, the console's games and their beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts from the making of the GameCube and have its history explained.

      Looking online today, a Gamecube goes for ~$40.00.
      A really cheap DVD player goes for around ~$35.00.
      Together that is about $75.00
      Ebay lists the Panasonic Q at $229.00.
      At least that claim is true today. Not so sure it was the same back when DVDs were brand-new.

      If you homebrew the Wii part of the WiiU, you can use Nintendont to run Gamecube games on the WiiU (provided you have an SD card and gamecube controllers). Meaning the WiiU can not only play Wii and WiiU games, but also Gamecube games. Is there even a point to the Wii anymore? :D

      Ya Nintendo has a way of making very consistently good games. I wouldn't say that about their consoles but the switch looks promising. I think it would be cool if Nintendo was just a developer but definitely not under anybody, especially Microsoft. They need to keep the creativity free from their clutches.

    Hey Dazz, did you know that Matsushita IS Panasonic, and that it's not a subsidiary, but the company itself? Matsushita outside of Japan, traded under the name Panasonic, before they decided to use the brand name in Japan also, but before even that happened, Matsushita traded in Japan by another English name; National.

  • @TheLuckyDingo

    You know, they might have been onto something with the GameCube button design... Especially when it came to quick time events. When I played Resident Evil 4, I had no problem reading the button on the screen and immediately hitting the correct button. When it came to doing similar things on the Wii U (Assassin's Creed 3 in particular), I would constantly get confused and hit the wrong button, since all the face buttons were the same shape and color. This was when I realized that whenever I read button prompts, the first things I read are the colors and shape, and it took me around 2-3 more seconds to process Wii U prompts over Gamecube prompts... I think it might have also been extra confusing to me, since I played a lot of Xbox and Xbox 360, and the buttons for X, Y, A, and B were reverse to be in English left to right order on the controllers. PlayStation buttons are also easy for me to read, since I read the colors first, and if necessary, the unique shapes. I can read those quickly, too.
    Which makes me wonder why Nintendo ditched color coding their buttons on the 3DS and Switch? Now I'm curious, does anyone else have this issue, or is it just me?

    I remember when the GameCube was released that, compared to the brand new XBox and the PS2, it felt like a let down. Like it was a kiddie console made for children. But now, with hindsight, everyone seems to look back on it very fondly. I do remember that people loved the controller though. Even back then. It was an acquired taste. I'm willing to bet that in 15 years time everyone will look back at the Wii U and say what an awesome system it was and pine for the days when at least Nintendo still made totally unique and different consoles. I love my Wii U :)

    It's amazing just how powerful the Gamecube was for it's time. Many believe the PS2 to be better graphically than the Gamecube, however this is false. Many games look and run much better on the Gamecube than it's counterparts, such as SSX Tricky and Resident Evil 4.

      If Microsoft showed that they actually were competent in the game market, and would take care of Nintendo well...we might've been playing Splatoon on a Xbox One right now.
      Nintendo made the complete right decision for the right reason. Nintendo knows the market well and future success is better in their own hands, then Microsofts. Clearly Microsoft would ruin them in many aspects.
      Personally, Valve should consider buying Nintendo. If it was done right, PC gaming would be worldwide. I'd never fuckin leave home. Splatoon online on a PC....**drools**

      Even more, both the GameCube and Wii U were the worst-selling Nintendo consoles of their time. @toasturhztoastbunz896 7 лет назад +29

      But Nintendo did turn down the offer of purchasing rare. Ultimately forcing rare to shift to Microsoft to buy them. So it is kind of Nintendo's fault for rare's downfall too.

    • @WishMakers
      @WishMakers 7 лет назад +10

      Nintendo still owned a major part of Rare as a company and was a huge stockholder for them. From what I recall, Microsoft buying Rare was a forced buyout, and Rare had several budding projects with Nintendo at the time that had to be shelved.

    • @WishMakers
      @WishMakers 7 лет назад +20

      Just a quick note after doing some research, I was wrong, as it was not a forced buyout, but my original comment still stands. Besides not outright buying the studio, Nintendo didn't cause the downfall of Rare. Everything that Rare did afterwards was not in Nintendo's hands. Nintendo may or may not have regretted buying Rare entirely, but I don't see how they were at fault.

      That's a hardware issue, not a design issue. Put a rotating ball underneath with pins for each arm to rest on when pressed down and it works. It's what I did to my controllers. Makes it easier to play Gameboy games through the Gameboy Player as well.
      But the design of the Gamecube controller, the layout and how it's shaped? That's about as close to perfection as we've gotten.

    Did you know? Tech company GameVice also tried to sue Nintendo for controller-related patents, which were finally dismissed in March, 2020. The company alleged that the Joy Cons were too similar to GameVice's own dockable controllers, but failed on numerous counts due to having only a very superficial similarity. Ultimately, their fate was the same as before; a Texas court ruled in GameVice's favor* before an appeals court determined that the device was "too obvious" to have a patent issued.
    *It should be noted that many patent trolls and companies who use broad interpretations of vague patents as the basis for lawsuits will seek damages in Marshall, Texas due to the court's unusually aggressive support for patent holders there. However, in 2017 the Supreme Court ruled that a patent holder cannot simply choose any court they want and can only sue from within a district that they have an operations branch located in.

      To throw an excerpt from a discussion about the Console Wars I like, read this:
      "When the Xbox One was announced, the plan was that it had to be
      always-online to work, and wouldn’t support used games. Always online is
      a tall order for some customers (especially those with data caps), and
      always online with a mandatory camera+microphone device is extra skeezy.
      The used-games lockout was also very anti-consumer, since it would also
      potentially prevent you from sharing games with your friends. The real
      kicker though was when consumers asked about an offline option for the
      Xbox One, they were told that Microsoft already had a product for people
      who couldn’t have a constant internet connection: The Xbox 360. They
      essentially told all their customers to fuck off and stick with the old
      hardware if they didn’t want to be constantly online. The fact that
      marketing focused more on TV apps, sports, and media box stuff instead
      of gaming only further seemed to tell the core gaming audience to piss
      off.
      The sum of all this is that Microsoft was announcing a
      console that was more expensive than it needed to be to accommodate a
      peripheral that the core audience didn’t want, all the while seeming to
      actively antagonize the core gaming audience who would buy it in the
      first place. That’s enough to give people pause about where their
      loyalties lie."
      I would say that creating new versions is them trying to dig their way out of the hole they dug themselves into, rather than a sign of booming success on their part

    • @Speedojesus
      @Speedojesus 7 лет назад

      T1g Except the always online was an overblown issue. What's the downsides? 'I have to be always online and kinect will always be on.' If you're that paranoid just put the kinect behind you TV so it can't see or hear anything. And data caps, even in 2013 were dying out, with anybody who's seriously into gaming wouldn't have a plan with a data cap.
      "I would say that creating new versions is them trying to dig their way out of the hole they dug themselves into, rather than a sign of booming success on their part" This doesn't make any sense. If their current console is already failing then why make the S? Or the Xbox One X? Especially because building more units that have better hardware would obviously cost more money, and if they already a failing console on their hands why waste money you can't lose?
