  • A comparison of the Rolex Daytona Series 3 116520 and Pagani Design PD1644
FOR WATCH COLLECTORS One of the most iconic watches of the 20th Century is the Rolex Daytona.
On October 25, 2017, Paul Newman's personal Rolex Daytona Reference 6239 was auctioned off by Phillips Auction House at a final price of $17.75 Million US Dollars. This makes it the most expensive watch in the world.
Earlier this year wanting to try a Chronograph I purchased a Homage to the Daytona made by Pagani Design reference PD 1644. I made a couple of videos - with an unboxing and initial impressions. Since then this watch has been my goto watch.
But I have been hoping to compare this to the real thing - and this week my wish came true. Thanks to Mr X I now have on loan the Rolex Daytona Series three reference 116520 with the Rolex 4130 Automatic Movement.
So today I am going to do a comparison of the Real and Homage and give you my thoughts. I appreciate this video might polarise opinions BUT I will to try and be unbiased and objective in my assessment.
RRP Rolex Daytona £10,500.00 , Pagani Design £55.00.

I find it funny that the pagani design is objectively better at being a watch, as its MUCH more accurate than the Rolex could ever be.

I’ve had my pagani for 6 months and it is superb. I ended up buying 2 other pagani design watches and they are also excellent. Whilst I have some quality watches (omega, breitling, tag heuer etc) I could not justify spending £20000 on one, as beautiful as the Rolex is.

Very nice and enjoyable video comparison. Like many of your viewers, $25K to $125K is too much to pay even if you have the means to do so. I've always had an affection for the Daytona (Rol*x) but in a world where sticking to a budget actually means something then, the clear and obvious choice is the PD 1644. With its handsome looks I'll be proud to wear it on a daily basis, and NO I wouldn't even dream of passing it off to complementors as the "Real Thing." My aim is to enjoy the timepiece without pretense. Have a great and safe day Richard!! Cheers, Tim

I really like the idea of homage watches, like the Pagani Design you showed here. They look nice, and they are not trying to pretend to be a real rolex with a fake logo. I know which I would choose when I take my dogs running in the park, or go out for beers with my friends. The idea of having a watch you would be too scared to wear on a daily basis means most of use would go for the pagani.

It really comes down to why you want that you want. If you want an attractive watch that keeps spot-on time, then look no further than the Pagani. If you want a watch that ticks those boxes but also qualifies you for invites to toffish circle-jerks, then by all means, get the Rolex. With the Pagani, you wear the watch, with the Rolex, the watch wears YOU. Richard, that was a delight to watch. I subscribed and look forward to binge-watching you.

Lately…used Daytona’s are $140,000 USD makes the Pagani Chronograph Sport an even better value. I was curious after watching so many videos about the Pagani, so I ordered one for my wife (she wanted a chronograph). It took a long, long time to arrive from China. But as we sized the watch, we were amazed at the finish, and quality. Heck, even the Seiko version cost $675 USD IF you can find one. I don’t know how Pagani does it…but the watch is WELL WORTH the $68 (including Tax) USD I paid. Thanks for the tip. It was a good one!

I have the black dial pagani. As a hobbyist jeweler I ran the pagani through my polishing routine and it just makes the watch so great to look at. Such a high value for money watch. Buy a great strap and there is zero chance the average person will be able to properly guess the actual amount you paid for it.

Would you be kind enough to post your polishing routine?

    • @Magicmeatbag
      @Magicmeatbag 3 года назад +3

@@ulysses26 Well with this case it is a bit unorthodox but I use the Chemical guys 34, 36, and 38 auto-polishing compounds and finish with 10k grit diamond powder polish. I also buy 4 different microfiber towels and put each of the polishing compounds into a corner of their own separate clothes and let them dry out. So for example I have 1 cloth with the 34 liquid polish dried out in the corner, 1 cloth with the 36 and 1 with the 38. Then with the 10k diamond powder I just place the powder on the edge of the towel and work it into the fibers.
You can just buy the polishing compounds from Amazon and in a sampler pack too and the 10k diamond powder you can just buy from Ebay for like 10 bucks. Then once each cloth is setup I just lightly polish in the sequence of 34 to the 36 to the 38 compound and finish with the 10k diamond cloth and then repeat the sequence. It might seem like a lot at first but I use this routine on my everything like my watches, my car, guitars, golf clubs and It works great. Just make sure not to put too much pressure on the piece when you are polishing as you might cause a scratch to happen.
If you just wanted to test the waters buy the Chemical guys 38 polishing compound with a decent microfiber towel just so you can see it for yourself without having to engage in a lot of hassle. Anyways just my 2cents.

    Thank you for your video!
I was looking for a "racing watch" for quite some time, had a look at Helgray LeMans, Seiko Montecarlo and so on and then I found the Pagani with a silver dial and rubber strap on Amazon for just 108 Euros. To be true, I didn't think about Rolex doing anything like this and didn't even look for a homage, just that 70s style watch from the golden days of motorsports.
Then I searched here on youtube what others think about what I bought and learnt about the Rolex Daytona.
From your video I now know there are enough differences, i.E. indexes, the crown, the pushers, the position of the 24h and the chronograph minutes dial, the date window, the quartz movement (which I like, I have more watches with Seiko quartz movements, this is due to my days as a radio operator in the navy. I did need accurate time then.) and more, and I didn't buy just another Rolex copy. The watch is well worth the money, even the higher price on Amazon which gives me some security in case of a warranty claim and saved me trouble with customs and taxes.
Mine is very well made, everything lines up perfectly and the crown is on parr with my Yema Seaspider with the Seiko Kinetic Movement.

I've worn in for a month now and it keeps excellent accuracy and looks great on a aftermarket brown calf leather strap, for the money it's a no brainer. I've also got the Pagani "Speedmaster" black dial on a Milanese bracelet which is a stunning looking watch. Pagani is a cheap brand making good watches. I just bought the PD1644 with the "Meteorite" dial for a smidge over £30. That's twice the value proposition of yours. I've seen the 'real deal' Rolex - which was a limited production model - advertised for over £100K. Madness IMO. Watches are simply a bit of "Man Jewellery" to me. I like particular designs and I prefer minimal maintenance etc. I also prefer not having to 'worry' about my watch getting bashed or worse.. The most expensive watch I ever owned was a Tag Heuer - it was stolen.
The Pagani Design Daytona homage is quite simply a phenomenal watch. Truly "A Champagne watch for Lemonade money". Whilst I'm sure the Rolex Daytona is (and does feel a bit) higher quality, I'd rather spend my £100K somewhere else. When you consider that houses and top notch cars are a similar price I think the value proposition of the watch is diminished.
The luxury watch market as an investment is a bit artificial and driven by potential Owner's feelings of exclusivity and inferred status. If you have the money and want the Rolex, go for it! I'll stick with my Pagani homage.

I was lucky to buy a very tatty Sea Dweller about 35 years ago for £250, I spent quite a bit getting it back to top condition + serviced, then sold it in 1995 for £850. Not bad eh? But by this time it was losing about 5 mins per day and I couldn't be bothered spending the money to get it serviced. Now, do I wish I still had it? Yes - as it'd be worth around £8k now. Would I ever buy another Rolex? Never! (unless I found one for a few hundred pounds....) As for their pricing, I believe Sir Isaac Newton summed it up with gravity, 'what goes up must eventually come down'.

I've just ordered the gold and silver one because I liked how it looked. I've got three Seikos at about £200 each. All Chronographs. Lets see how the Pagani 1644 weighs up against the Seikos when It arrives!

I ordered myself a 1664 which is a daytona with rubber strap... will probably arrive in a week and I am actually excited about the watch... how did your watches do? Do you like them? Do you actually wear them or did they end up in the drawer? Were you disappointed or did the watches deliver?

I never have a Rolex in my hands so, I can be completely objective, but I have 2 Paganis and they looks, feels and works amazing for the price. I don’t know how people can justify 10 thousands + watches.

I honestly think the only people who should be wearing watches like this these days are super rich people. Sure a working class man COULD save up, but leaving the house with a watch thats probably worth more than their current bank balance is just crazy to me. They are WAY too recognizable, so everyone, and more importantly robbers know what it is.

After a few years the service on that rolex starts at $800.00 . even in a safe the oils dry out in it. Then wear it on the streets of any city and see how long it takes before its taken from you.

I was lucky enough to buy a Rolex Sub during lockdown in Luzen, Switzerland 🇨🇭 (benefited from the lack of competition from Chinese tourists who routinely make Watch tourism) however I am in the market for a chronograph and would love a Daytona but so difficult to get, I want to buy on the grey market. But I am not sure if I will love it. So actually buying one of these Pagani could be a nice place holder, to see if it scratches the itch. But essentially the Rolex is always superior and worth the money because they did the R&D, they designed it. That is worth more than the sum of the parts.

    • @acideauxrivarda3352
      @acideauxrivarda3352 3 года назад +1

FYI - Rolex R&D did some borrowing! Omega's Speedmaster was the first to use the external Tachymeter bezel in 1957 that Rolex "borrowed" for the Daytona's design (Omega made it to the moon, Rolex didn't pass NASA's tests...). Also, the Submariner came out in 1954 but Blancpain's "Fifty Fathoms" and Zodiac's "Sea Wolf" dive watches came out in 1953 and Rolex very much borrowed from these two older Swiss watch companies. Everybody borrows a little... including "superior" Rolex.

I'm happy that you can own and enjoy a genuine Rolex. I'm sure you'll get a significant return on your 'investment' too. For the rest, the Rolex is simply expensive because it can be. Rolex are happy to limit production and push the brand further up market because it will appeal to a certain demographic for that very reason. Sure, the quality is there but what you're really paying for is "the name", exclusivity and inferred status. The R&D costs were more than recouped many years ago...

I assume that the Mr.X that you got the Rolex from is the same Mr.X that Jody from "Just one more watch" uses. Whoever he is, he's a class act for allowing you all to use his watches to demonstrate just how great these homages have become.
You know what the best way to protect a Rolex from theives is? Not a safe, just a little post-it note stuck to it that says "CHEAP FAKE" and just leave it out where anyone could see it. LOL

Neither...Sugess. The finish on the Pagani, if you look at the details, is relatively poor. Little things like machining marks that PD does pretty poorly if you're willing to look just beyond the surface.

I can't really be objective on this topic as I'm not in a position to spend $20k on a watch but I don't really see an upside of buying a Rolex except brand perception and for investment purposes. $20k for an old banged up watch that costs $1000 to service just seems like a waste of money. I would rather buy 3 Pagani variations and mix them up a bit and if you baby them like the Rolex, I don't see a reason why those watches wouldn't last you at least 10 years, but that's just me and I don't care about brand perception. I got an Nautica (fashion watch) that is 9 years old and looks good as new because I took care of it.
