      I do wonder if it is his dream what does it represent to skullkid? In his subconscious what are the 4 giants abandoning him a metaphor for. The crushing weight of the moon, the constant anxiety of the towns folk, the fear of loss and depression, what did skull kid go through for those feelings to manifest as characters in his dream.

    The theories centering around Majoras Mask being a dream/alternate dimension/afterlife are always intriguing but very funny to me because no one would be making these specific theories if the dev team had enough time to make original models for all the townsfolk.

  • @ZeldaLore
    @ZeldaLore 2 года назад +66

    Definitely not. Skull Kid is seen in Termina before he gets the mask. It is a parallel world, the manual of Majora's Mask even calls it a parallel world.
    Those books makes things up 90% of the time, as it's the writters interpretations of the games (which they confirm in the books themselves), writters who had practically no supervision from the Zelda Team. Those books are published Fanfiction and theories, and shouldn't be considered canon. This includes the timeline, which has glaring errors and contradictions with the games (looking at you Four Swords Adventures)

    • @chrispork1443
      @chrispork1443 2 года назад +1

      We need a remake of Four Swords Adventures. I don’t find a problem with Ganondorf being reincarnated after being killed. (In fact, I believe the Ganondorf in the sequel to Breath of the Wild is a new incarnation of the Demon King), but the fact that it was supposed to be a direct prequel to A Link to the Past may have tied up some plot holes.

    • @ZeldaLore
      @ZeldaLore 2 года назад +6

      @@chrispork1443 Ganondorf "reincarnating" goes against established lore. Ganondorf has never "reincarnated" as a new person. He is reborn time and time again, brought to life by external forces or he breaks free from his seals. When he does, his spirit lingers in the underworld until he can return to the living world.
      BOTW2 Ganondorf is the same Ganon from Ocarina of Time. Not only does Creating a Champion allude to it, all mentions of Ganon in Breath of the Wild are of Ganon from Ocarina of Time (even mentioning events from Ocarina of Time itself). His round ears gives it away too, as the Gerudo only had round ears in Ocarina of Time, and pointed ears by the time of Breath of the Wild.

It's another world that exists as part of a multiverse in an alternate plane of existence. Both places really exist. Both places may or may not have the same people existing as well. Like it had started out as some sort of Peter Pan-looking knight and princess fantasy thing, but for three games in a row the plot was 'Link get whisked away to an alternate universe and has to save it.' Now, Labrynna and Holodrum are probably in the same universe as Hyrule... but maybe they aren't, let's ignore that discussion for now, as it was even less clear back then because it was before RUclips, or GameFAQs, or Zeldapedia, etc.

    People always seem to get mad when their fictional worlds are deemed illusory. There is clearly emotional baggage and a lot of mental gymnastics going on.
    It is truly the only way the events of the game make sense and the Japanese are more comfortable with these surreal explanations. Link clearly entered the Lost Woods withouth a fairy and, as we know, thus never ends well . He was probably already an adult because the intro story tells the events of OoT like they were a long time ago.
    Termina was created the moment the Skull Kid Got ahold of the ocarina of time and combined its power with that of Majora. This is the reason the entire world revolves around the concept of time, clocks etc. It makes no sense that the Song of Time now has so much power, or Link re learning Epona's Song,
    Aliens? the Skull Kid Being a mythical creature? Male fairies? Monkeys talking? both an adult and child Malon doppelgänger? This is clearly some fever dream shared somehow and shaped by the immature minds of the skull kid, majora, the happy mask salesman and/or Link.
    The song of healing is just saria's song backwards because it is the favorite song of the Skull Kid. Saria's song is even the last sound we hear at the end of the game.
    The fact inhabirants have memories is nothing for the power of Majora combined with the ocarina of time. There is nothing out of the ordinary with people inside dreams/ilusions having a past. This is not even a new discussion. the same debate surrounds the book Alice In Wonderland which most likely influenced the game too.
    We see Link as an Stalfos in the sequel (some are stll in denial about it though) he entering Ikana is the final stage in his conversion, and the elegy of emptiness is him leaving his body behind.
    The concept was probably inspired by that of the black lodge from the series Twin Peaks, where dopplegangers of the characters reside too. This series also inspired Link's Awakening, making Majora's Mask a spiritual succesor.
    Sorry, but Those still attached to Termina need the song of healing played to them.

    Fierce Deity beating Majora is canon. Fierce Deity exists outside of Majora, Termina(where Link, SK and HMS are standing during the ending) exists outside of Majora, there is also knowledge of the Triforce in Termina, implying Hyrule & Termina are connected via the Lost Woods… ZE in offers nothing new that HH didn’t initially, which never stated MM was a dream. The only sensible theory it offers is that OOX Link =/= ALTTP>LA Link.

    Hyrule Encycopedia's canoncity is questionable. Even so, in-game evidence trumps any guide book, and in "Majora's Mask", when Tatl describes her and Tael meeting Skull Kid for the first time, one of the scenes that follows is Skull Kid and the fairies playing in Termina Field, long before he gets Majora's Mask. Not to mention there are no in-game suggestions that Termina isn't a real place, unlike the case with Koholit in "Link's Awakening".

  • @TheLegendOfZeldaEric

    Reasons I think it’s a different dimension and not a dream:
    Zelda gives you the OOT and tells you the goddess of time is watching over link, which provides a reason for being able to reset time.
    The scene of chasing skull kid after he steals your horse takes place in hyrule or just outside of hyrule. This means the mask and skull kid exist in the same world as Hyrule and the whole story of OOT.
    Where the different dimension comes into place is the fall through the log that goes down super far, and you end up coming out in a town that never existed/was mentioned in OOT.
    Is this an alternate hyrule called termina where a kingdom doesn’t exist and instead people just live in a town? No ganon no Zelda just a town of people who are the same as the inhabitants of OOT?
    I don’t think it’s a dream so much as a pocket dimension that exists in the lost woods, as you go into a tree and never come back out during majoras mask or after.
    Also the flower you land on breaks a huge fall, would it be possible for link to return to hyrule at the end of majoras mask by using the deku flower?
    He must’ve returned somehow as he is the one who teaches Twilight Princess Link the art of sword fighting.

    I've honestly been hoping someone would bring this up again so I could propose my own interpretation. So, my idea is that Hyrule Encyclopedia is slightly misinterpreted. In my interpretation, Skull Kid wandered into a world that had yet to be created. The world acted similar to the room of requirement from Harry Potter. The Skull Kid shaped the world and filled it with familiar faces and his own creations. Over time, the world began to act autonomously, no longer in his control. His friends, the four giants, took on the role of protectors as they were created. The Skull Kid, no longer in control of this world and its inhabitants, began to lash out. This lead to the story we heard from Anju's grandmother and subsequently to the events of Majora's Mask as a whole. I realize it doesn't work perfectly, as it doesn't really fit Hyrule Encyclopedia or fan need for it to be a real world, but it's the best I could think of to bridge the divide.

    Majoras mask is definitely in my top three Zelda games but for years now my head cannon has been it was all a dream link had. There are so many story elements to the game that make that the most likely scenario to me. I prefer termina to be a figment if his imagination, because based on the rules ocarina sets up for time travel, every time we play the song of time it should create a new time line. So every time we don’t make it to the top of the tower with the four giants, that would mean everyone in that time line dies in a lunar apocalypse. The world is drastically different and maybe even has different rules, but it has the exact same looking people just with different personalities. The same looking characters have are also associated with the same people sometimes too.
    Although the only problem with this, is that there isn't another Link in Termina. Maybe i can make a very far stretch and assume Termina's Link died or something, but there's no evidence for it, unless we maybe force the Elegy of Emptiness and Great Deity Mask as evidence.

Wind waker is the timeline where link failed to defeat ganon and ganon flooded the world. I like the idea that majoras mask is link dying and each segment of the game are (as many youtubers have pointed out!) are LITERALLY the 5 stages of grief.
    Clocktown - denial (this is obvious the town is denying the moon LITERALLY CRASHING ON THEM THAT YOU CAN SEE because they just don't want it to be true so they can have the festival.
    Swamp Temple - Anger.....the deku king is literally the embodiment of anger.
    Mountains - Bargaining, yeah the gorons are literally all BEGGING you to get their newly dead king's child to stop crying. Durani literally begs you to soothe his sons despair of missing his father.
    Ocean - Depression....i mean, this is another obvious one with the whole cutscene for getting the zora mask and the queen can literally not sing because of DEPRESSION OF DEAD MATE.
    Canyon - Acceptance. the invisible dude accepts his death to give oyu stone mask, the mummy guys daughter accepts her fathers "ugliness", the dead ikanaking accepts his death after and passes on.

    I never thought of Termina as a dream. I'm leaning more towards the theory of Link being dead, but also his way of processing his grief of losing Navi. The areas in Termina represents the stages of grief after all.

    I've always disliked the idea of Termina simply being a "dream" or "majora's creation". On top of the already weird things that happen on majora's mask (which I would say it has its own charm), it would add on a ton more that (I'll explain in a while) don't make it any better, like, how is it that Termina has such a drastic change from Hyrule when that was the only land both characters knew of? or how is it that skull kid felt abandoned by "friends" (the giants) of his own creation?, if Termina really is a dream (or purgatory as I've seen suggested as well), then how is it that Link left some of his possesions behind only found in Termina, the hero's bow, because it is worth to point out that OoC's was the fairies' bow (or something like that) and link only carried it as an adult before MM events, so it would not make sense for it to be named like that, on top of Epona falling a little before Link, so even if Link died and somehow was turned into a Stalfos, that doesn't explain Epona's descendant (or Link's for that matter), unless you assume that literaly everything in Majora's Mask, since the beginning of the playthrough, is a dream, and that still does not explain the rest (and that would put Majora's Mask's existance in question to begin with, something we know it exist due to its description in BotW)
    But my biggest issue is how much it invalidates Termina, that land is filled with culture and history of its own, with characters that felt alive enough for them to justify existing as its own world (or land). Implying that Termina isn't, or wasn't real, would be incredibly lame considering how much thought and charm went into its world, and also the different outcomes of it, like how ignoring certain quests makes some people's life misserable, when it WAS something that could've been prevented, or on the flip-side, how Link can take the opposite path and make their lives almost entirely better due to it, making it all a dream would completely eliminate any sort of real consequence and in-game lore pointless because at the end of the day "it was all just skull kids creation".
    But, the enciclopedias are put into question constantly regardless, and the rest are just theories, so I guess I don't have much to worry about as of now.

    I see the words from the developers themselves and the games they create are "more canon" than the books. So while the books do have some canonical value, anything in the books, (other than the timeline) that contradicts what has already been confirmed by the zelda team, is not canon. The stories and lore that come from the zelda team are far more canon and take priority over the books because not everything in the books comes directly from the zelda team.
    With that being said, the Aonu-man himself confirmed that termina is a parallel world, but also stated that there is more to it than that, without elaborating further. My theory is that termina is a parallel world, not a dream, created from the memories of link, the skull kid, and the tribe that created majora as a test for the hero. The memories of link would become the residents of termina, the memories of skull kid would be the four giants, and the memories of majora would be everything else. Now, who could have possibly created termina? The happy mask salesman. And no I will not elaborate on that.
    Another thing I wanted to mention was the fierce deity's mask. Aonuma explains, "The best way to think about it is that the memories of all the people of termina are inside the fierce deity mask." If my theory that the inhabitants of termina are created from links own memories is true, then that means the mask is actually links own memories of his adult self. This would explain why the fierce deity looks so much like adult link. The description of the mask suggests that the power of the mask is darker than majora, which may be an interpretation of links own unhealthy pride of himself. An all powerful, unstoppable hero who can smite demons and even the demon king ganon. A hero that only link remembers.
    Edit: also, the child on the moon wearing majoras mask (who also has the face of the happy mask salesman *wink wink nudge nudge*) calls you the bad guy and states that the bad guy will destroy termina, so I believe that termina ceases to exist when link returns to hyrule.

    Honestly I think Termina was never real because as Hyrule Encyclopedia stated the world of Termina at the end of the gane seizes to exist and it make sense because many people we meet looks a lot like the people of Hyrule, also it is said that world of Termina was created using the memories of Link and Skull Kid, also there’s one key the Fierce Deity Mask because the producer said the best way to think of the fierce deity’s mask contains the all the memories and souls of the people in termina meaning link once he gets that mask he’s sealed termina’s fate to fade but they won’t be forgotten. Plus the child on the moon wearing majora’s mask called you the bad guy the bad guy that will wipe out all of termina.

      Nothing about what the Encyclopedia said is really that concerning except for when it says it ceases to exist after Link leaves. There's no real indication of that happening. It being a parallel world created by Skull Kid and Majora's Mask is not contradictory to the original game's lore in the slightest and in fact explains a lot of things, especially why a lot of characters resembles those from OOT, because it was in part taken from Link's memory.
      The only real issue is the "ceases to be" part. And yeah, it's definitely not a dream either even if it was created by Majora's Mask.
