An old 1904 church bell has just about had it. The surface of the formerly bright nickle plating is now a dull green. This patine corrosion will take a lot of elbow grease and solvents to clean off. After several days of scrubbing and a dozen chemical coatings, the bell was shining just like it once did back 117 years ago.
Not only does the bell itself need fixing, but the hammer, mounting hardware, rope wheel and wooden support frame all need to be cleaned and refinished. The frame was too weak to support the bell, so a replica was built out of stronger materials. This cleanup operation took a fair bit of time, but the results are worth it.
A special thanks to Wilson Lawn Service for their assistance in transporting and mounting the 1200 pound bell.
This bell was installed at the front doors of the newly built Sacre' Coeur Retreat Center in Magnolia, Illinois.
