- Hello friends, Today I want to cast a bell from brass shells. Sleeves are my favorite casting material. The first attempt to cast a bell was a failure, there was a big hole in the bell. I got it on the second try.
I sanded and polished it. The sound of the bell is excellent.

I have had many holes in mine but when a person pours a good one , it is all worth. I would add a little more bentonite to the sand mixture. pour in the borax while in the furnace, give another jolt of heat and pour instantly. That brass cools quick and I think thats what happened with the first bell

Brass and bronze bells are incredible.
That case is worth around a 1/4 dollar a piece in 2024. ;) My favorite is to turn US silver dimes into silver bells. A friend has the tools to flatten and a bell die to form them. The dies work with sheet brass as well and you can turn those cases into sheets fairly easily but the thicker bells sound nicer.

Add a bit more bentonite to the sand mixture. This will keep casting from frying and making a rough finish. The casting will be easier to sand and grind also. Also with brass you need a deeper metal feed hole to allow for shrinkage...

I did cast onenwith Allancioni bell foundery on a shape i designed. It weighs 26kgs and 13 inches round and tall
I can also help with mold metal interface finishing to avoid burrs and sand inclusions

Bells made out of brass sound horrible. Sorry, that's just the way it is. A metal merchant that I buy metal stock from had several brass bells for sale a few years ago. I rang a couple of them, bad. I have a bronze bell on my sailboat. Now That's a bell.
