I got a vh-11 today, on sale to go with my td9. I am very happy with it after a few hours of playing, Wow what a difference from my old pd-what/ever. I paired it with a high quality stand with strong springs. Love it!
The VH11 works fine with both the Strike module and the DM10 MK2 Pro modules I have. Mind you, I don't use the internal audio - I run Superior Drummer 3 and do the hi-hat calibration inside SD3 for the most part, so that might have something to do with it. The Alesis modules send great velocity information to SD3, so its easy to then calibrate the different positions.
This was very helpful. I'm pretty sure there's a little sponge insert they make for the vh-10 and 11, allowing you to do that high-pitch shift change like on the 13.
Nice one, thanks for sharing this info! I use a TD-12 with the VH-12 and you are right about the trigger response. However, while using Superior Drummer you can enhance the trigger response. The best combination I ever played though was the TD-30 with the VH-13 and triggering Superior Drummer. It hardly gets better.
Mike Luke Thanks Mike. Superior Drummer is the only thing that can fix the trigger issues a bit. The best combination are actually both VH-12/13 + TD-30 :) The TD-20x works great too, I remember having the VH-12 with the TDW-20 and it was already nice.
@@Vdrumtips1 Do you know if it is possible in 2022 to upgrade a TD-20 module to TDW-20? Actually I would not use the sounds from the TD-20. However, I wonder if I upgrade to TDW-20 I will get the VH-12 playability improvements.
I recently upgraded my VH-11 to VH-13 for my TD30 module. I don't really feel much difference but the NOISE of the VH-13 specially when closing the hihat makes me sick. I'm thinking of going back to VH-11 :(
One thing to note about the Pearl Mimic. It has HH pitch increase and it is a feature compatible with all hi hat triggers. You can adjust the open and close point even on a foot pedal type hi hat and there is a setting for "extra tight" which is where the pitch increase happens. So not only can you use pitch increase with any hi hat you choose but you can custom tailor how easy or hard the effect is to achieve. Great video regardless.
Thanks, I found this out after making the video and it is another reason why the Mimic is great. If I would have one, I would get a VH-10 or 11. BTW. SD3 does that too.
I own a VH-11 hi hat that came with my TD-12 Roland electronic drum kit. The VH-11 hi hat has intermittent false triggering problems. To stop the false triggering I have to step real hard on the hi hat pedal, but after a few minutes and my left leg gets sore, it's very frustrating. I think that there must a loose solder connection or something along those lines. Does anybody know of any fixes for it? Thanks.
@@zeee4657 I sold it a while ago and bought a td50. There is a guide on vh 12 manual, it goes through the steps to set it up. I'm sure there are some guides on RUclips too. The trick is getting the pressure set up right, which you need to configure in the module.
Thanks for this, good comparison. I have a VH-13 but I'm irritated by the sound it makes when opening/closing (can hear it clearly even with my headphones on). This is especially irritating when playing jazz. Anyone have a solution/workaround for this? could you combine a FD-9 with the VH-13 for instance?
I didn't think of noise canceling headphones yet, thanks, however this problem would also arise when i practice with my jazz band at low volumes (amplifier). I read something about applying felt / velcro tape on the bottom hat of the VH13. Any experience with it?
Nice and very concise comparison. Thanks! I own a VH-11, mostly because the noise of the 12 / 13 is just too much for my poor neighbors. Thanks to this video I can now be at peace with that.
I thinking of upgrading to the Roland TD 25. I currently have a TD 8 module. I dont have any Vdrum hihats. Which Roland Vdrum Hihat should I get? thanks.
Can a VH-12 be made to work with a TD-11? Or is their no benefit, and it's just not worth trying to go higher than a VH-11 with the TD-11 (not even with some kind of adapter kit, or with EZDrummer etc and a laptop)? Anyone with a TD-11 have experience with this? Thanks!
Thank you for the great video. I am trying to replicate the hi-hat sound you can hear in Duran Duran’s Rio song that is like an accent on the hi-hat when playing the bass drum at the same time. Will the VH-13 do that? I currently have a VH-11 with a TD-25 so it looks like my upgrade path is quite expensive since I should upgrade to a TD-50 if I understood your video correctly. Thank you for sharing your great knowledge!
Awesome review! Following the channel now! Does VH-12 or VH-13 works with Roland TD-17? I am thinking about buying a TD-17KVX set and maybe replacing the hi hat.
What is your opinion of the ATV hi hats, compared to VH-13s? I just picked up the ATVs to replace VH-11s (note that pressure feature works with VH-11s on Mimic pro).
Iron Giant It is a great hi-hat in combination with the Pearl Mimic, but does not perform so well with Roland modules. If you have a mimic, then you made a good choice.
Great video. Thank you so much. I have a TD-20 triggering Superior Drummer 3 (and only use it for SD3 - not for the TD-20 sounds). In your video you make it clear that the VH-12 gets only average results with the TD-20. Does the VH-11 get better results/triggering with the TD-20? In other words, is the VH-12 worse than the VH-11 with the TD-20 or are they equal? And does your answer apply only for the internal TD-20 hi hat sounds or also when triggering Superior Drummer 3? Will SD3 hi hats sounds better with a VH-12 and TD-20X/TDW-20 than with a TD-20 and VH-11? Thanks for your thoughts!
Colin Drake They are pretty much equal on TDW-20 and TD-20X. The VH-12 is just not perfect with the plain TD-20. SD3 is a different story, trough to the adjustment options. The VH-11 is good with all of them.
Hi, guys! Has anyone had problems adjusting CY-13R and CY-12C to Toontrack SD 2.0? I can't get choke sounds whatever I do :(. I also have issues with the new PDX-100 as a snare. The center of the pad is amazingly louder\more sensitive than the rest of the pad, which results in hard-sounding shots when I hit directly in the center.

hi, thx for ur great vid! I was about to buy a vh13 until i saw ur vid. im using a TD12 and vh11 but with BFD3 over PC for the sound, so the reason for me was the open-close transition and i mean the acurate and sensitive triggering here not so much the sound. would u say it is the same as the vh11 which i am using now? i imagined it must be miles better. (Im playing for 5 years now). thx for an answer. anyone who knows the difference between vh11 and vh13 please share ur insight:)

Hey there, such a coincidence I have recently got the TD30 and also with the mapex falcon Hihat stand. There is a slight rotational issue but it's far from annoying. I usually spin the hat to its right place after 30mins of playing
Matt Barker Have you tried to tighten the rod of the stand with a gripper? I would go to a music store and check hihat stands where the rod can be tightened. My dw9500 has counternuts at the rod winding, that keeps the rod tight.
