The VH-11 consists of 3 parts. A top hi-hat cymbal including clutch, a controller and a rotation stopper plate to prevent the controller from spinning.
The VH-11 is one of the most popular electronic drums hi-hats as it is compatible with so many e-drum modules.
The setup is straightforward. Remove the felt piece from your hihat stand, apply the rotation stopper, then the controller and now the hi-hat. Make sure the Roland Logo points away from you. Press the pedal to fix the clutch and setup the trigger values. That’s it.
The playing feel is great. It does not have a bottom cymbal but that is almost not noticeable. This hi-hat works perfect with those modules and good enough with those. You have 2 zones, it is chokable and the open-close transition is not noticeable with these modules. You have a 2Box module? No Problem, get one of those 42Box adapters to make the VH-11 compatible with your drumit 5.
What is so great about this hi-hat? It is not too noisy, it moves realistically and the setup process is quick and easy.
What is not so good? The top part will rotate if you don’t have a proper hi-hat stand.
    The Roland VH-13
The VH-13 is the best but most expensive e-drum hi-hat on the market. It looks a bit better than the VH-11.
It consists a bottom piece and a top cymbal. The setup process is quite intense, hence to its construction. The anti-spinning gear is made for all kinds of “hi-hat stand-pipe types”. The special anti-spinning rubber holder comes in 3 different sizes. XL, L and M. A solid metal clamp holds the anti-spinning rubber in place.
The VH-13 has an inner stereo cable to connect the bottom part with the top part. The hi-hat clutch is similar to the VH-11 clutch. It looks and functions like an acoustic hi hat clutch.
Press the pedal, use this automatic setup function of the TD-30 and tighten the clutch screw. Done!
What is so special about the VH-13 in terms of triggering? It has this Foot Pressure Sensing feature. Meaning you press your hi-hat pedal when the hats are closed and the module generates a high pitch sound. Can it get more realistic? No!
But keep in mind that the triggering result is only great in combination with the right module ( meaning the TD-30 and 50. Yes, it works with a TD-20X too, but not as good as the VH-12.
No other e-drum hi-hat is as realistic. It feels so authentic. The whole surface can be played and triggers consistently well.
What is so cool about the VH-13? It looks and feels more realistic than the VH-11. The triggering is accurate, it is super sensitive and the bottom part will never spin.
What is not so good about the VH-13? It is loud! Very loud. The hollow inner space amplifies noise. It is Metallic Grey. What, but that looks nice, right? It does, until the colour comes off, which will happen at some point. Thanks god, Roland released a black version of the VH-13 with the TD-50KV.
But the VH-13 works with older Roland modules right? It does, but the result is not as good as an older Roland module in combination with an older hi-hat. And what about 2Box Drumtit 5? Zourman will help you here too.
    The Roland VH-12
Is almost the exact same hi-hat as the VH-13. It consists the same parts, only the opening and closing sensor is different, but this is not notable at all while playing.
The trigger result with a TD-30 and 50 is identical to the VH-13 triggering. No difference. It is compatible with the TD-12 and the plain TD-20 with no expansion, with an average trigger result, in combination with a TDW-20 and TD-20X with an awesome trigger result. And 2 Box friends, you guessed it. The 42Box is also available for Roland VH-12. Have fun.
Side note, the VH-12 is not in production anymore, you have to dig on eBay or reverb to get one. It is available in Black and Silver colour. I would avoid the silver ones, as they have the same downside as the metallic grey VH-13.
Is a VH-12 compatible with a Roland TD-25? No. Should you buy a VH-12 if you have a TD-12 or a plain TD-20? No, because the trigger result is not great. Stick with the VH-11 here.
Should you buy a VH-12 in combination with a Roland TDW-20 or TD-20X or even TD-30 or 50? Hell yeah.
What do all 3 have in common?
All 3 hihats have a diameter of 12”, all have a similar clutch, all need 2 cables and all 3 need a hi-hat stand with a strong spring.

Nice one, thanks for sharing this info! I use a TD-12 with the VH-12 and you are right about the trigger response. However, while using Superior Drummer you can enhance the trigger response. The best combination I ever played though was the TD-30 with the VH-13 and triggering Superior Drummer. It hardly gets better.

    • @Vdrumtips1
      @Vdrumtips1  7 лет назад +1

Mike Luke Thanks Mike. Superior Drummer is the only thing that can fix the trigger issues a bit. The best combination are actually both VH-12/13 + TD-30 :) The TD-20x works great too, I remember having the VH-12 with the TDW-20 and it was already nice.

@@Vdrumtips1 Do you know if it is possible in 2022 to upgrade a TD-20 module to TDW-20? Actually I would not use the sounds from the TD-20. However, I wonder if I upgrade to TDW-20 I will get the VH-12 playability improvements.

The VH11 works fine with both the Strike module and the DM10 MK2 Pro modules I have. Mind you, I don't use the internal audio - I run Superior Drummer 3 and do the hi-hat calibration inside SD3 for the most part, so that might have something to do with it.
The Alesis modules send great velocity information to SD3, so its easy to then calibrate the different positions.

One thing to note about the Pearl Mimic. It has HH pitch increase and it is a feature compatible with all hi hat triggers. You can adjust the open and close point even on a foot pedal type hi hat and there is a setting for "extra tight" which is where the pitch increase happens. So not only can you use pitch increase with any hi hat you choose but you can custom tailor how easy or hard the effect is to achieve.
    Great video regardless.

    • @Vdrumtips1

I own a VH-11 hi hat that came with my TD-12 Roland electronic drum kit.
The VH-11 hi hat has intermittent false triggering problems. To stop the false triggering I have to step real hard on the hi hat pedal, but after a few minutes and my left leg gets sore, it's very frustrating. I think that there must a loose solder connection or something along those lines. Does anybody know of any fixes for it?

Great video. Thank you so much. I have a TD-20 triggering Superior Drummer 3 (and only use it for SD3 - not for the TD-20 sounds). In your video you make it clear that the VH-12 gets only average results with the TD-20. Does the VH-11 get better results/triggering with the TD-20? In other words, is the VH-12 worse than the VH-11 with the TD-20 or are they equal? And does your answer apply only for the internal TD-20 hi hat sounds or also when triggering Superior Drummer 3? Will SD3 hi hats sounds better with a VH-12 and TD-20X/TDW-20 than with a TD-20 and VH-11? Thanks for your thoughts!

    • @Vdrumtips1
      @Vdrumtips1  5 лет назад

Colin Drake They are pretty much equal on TDW-20 and TD-20X. The VH-12 is just not perfect with the plain TD-20. SD3 is a different story, trough to the adjustment options. The VH-11 is good with all of them.

@@zeee4657 I sold it a while ago and bought a td50. There is a guide on vh 12 manual, it goes through the steps to set it up. I'm sure there are some guides on RUclips too. The trick is getting the pressure set up right, which you need to configure in the module.
