    I would highly recommend buttering the bottom of the drain base with thinset. It will make the bond much better with the deck mud. I wish schluter would make the bottom of the drain assembly with a texture to help the bond.

    I think what is missing from this video as well as many others and the documentation, is what is the minimum hole size required for the drain. I made a totally stupid newbie DIY mistake of taking the drain out of the box, measuring the pipe O.D., what happens to be around 2.5", and proceeding to purchase a 3" hole saw. I neglected the shoulder of the drain, which has a considerably larger diameter. The videos state to not make the hole over 5", but neglects to state the minimum diameter required. With some calipers I was able to determine that the shoulder diameter is about 4.375". So after I mortared the plywood flooring and set the pan in place, I had the unpleasant surprise of realizing the drain did not go all the way in due to the 4.375" shoulder. After the fact I did find find the template provided but it was too late. Turns out the template measures 4.625". So if you're new to this, a 4.5: hole saw should be the minimum size required, just make sure you center it well. If you want more wiggle room, but a 5" hole saw.

      Thank You! I looked all over for that exact information. I hate when the company expects you to watch a video for informaiton which should be in written material someplace.

      Companies dont want to pay for written material, they want us to search videos and waste our time. Its maddening how these corporations make it hard on the installer. I blame a lot of it on Globalism. Europe forces companies to write directions in all the languages that Europe speaks, and since we buy and sell to the a lot, it affects us now. They wont make directions in English for America, its maddening, but blame corporate globalists who dont know the difference between a trowel from a float.@@randyhermann9347

      So glad I read the comments thankyou and yes, the kerdi drain itself is shaped like a funnel! the ONLY reference in the video to this issue is visual, seriously Schluter?
      The plywood hole around my plumbing pipe is far too small and will need to be enlarged again, thank you for the measurements....something the company should have mentioned, not even sure if my plumber would have realized this when we go to install.

    Once you have your length of pipe determined, why can't you just put down the tray and thinset the drain in like normal? Why do you have to break away the drain support from the tray?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 года назад +24

      Hello Sam I am! You can install the whole tray with thin-set like normal. The video was showing instances when the drain install needs to be left for the plumber to install because of local plumbing codes stating that the plumber makes all glued connections. The tray may be installed later in these cases for various reasons. Hope this helps!

    Great video... thank you! When you set the drain height using the detached center section, it appears that there was not space considered for the mortar added to the floor and top/bottom of detached center section. Did you add additional height when setting the drain? What about when you set the pan... will the mortar below the pan make the pan too high compared to the drain height?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  Год назад

      Hi Jeff! When we install the center section, it is a very small amount of thin-set (as shown). This is the same when setting the tray. Both are taken into account and should end up at the same height. Hope that helps! 🍊

    Are the spacers included with the drain the same height as the cut out that comes with the pan? As in, if i have both the set of spacers and the pan cut out, they are interchangeable for determining the drain height?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 года назад

      Hi Amanda, yes, they are approximately the same thickness. Keep in mind that there is one tray that uses a thicker spacer (KST965-1525S, with a 1 1/2" perimeter height). Please see the Shower Installation Handbook for complete details.

    What if my drain pipe isn't exactly in the center where the shower pan hole is? It's off by 1/2" inch. Can I cut into the Schluter shower pan a bit to move the center hole to be offset to match? I don't think it will effect the slope for the water to run into the drain.

      Short answer is yes you can trim the pan a little. Conversly, if the pan isn't wide enough to reach the other wall theres a way you can pack it with deck mud (the seal with kerdi). Very flexible.

    Hi Schluter, what is the minimum height needed between the top of the flange and the subfloor? Mine is currently installed and sitting roughly 3/8 in. above the subfloor which is not ideal it seems. Is there anything I can do to avoid having to rip everything out and start over? I'm hoping I can apply additional thinset between the top of the flange and kerdi membrane collar to increase height and level with tray. I have called Schluter customer service on this but haven't been able to get an answer with 100% certainty. I appreciate the help!

    Anyone with experience know if that drain can go without the spacer and directly on a concrete slab with thin set underneath it and then a mortar bed with slope over it?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 года назад

      Hi Jose. The drain does need to be installed over the spacer or mortar so there is proper support under the flange. The flange also needs to be installed above the mortar so the fleece can bond to the KERDI waterproofing membrane, which will create a waterproofing seal above the mortar and prevent the mortar bed from becoming saturated. See the INSTALLATION section of the Shower Installation Handbook for more details. Hope this helps.

      If not, you would either need to build up the substrate around the drain to accommodate the height needed to install the drain or have the concrete chipped out around the pipe.

Also they have great strings sylicon caulks for 1/3 of price of Schluters brand (try to imagine 1 sylicon caulk tube around $30 bucks each or more than that )! How about the Schluter wall showers $150 bucks /per sheet 🤯🤯🤯 I think they’re trying to goal on high level consumers ! It’s time for the Chinese discover this “opportunity” and do something with quality and popular prices

    Hi, how do I determine the length of pipe needed to connect the kerdi drain to the plumbing drain below the subfloor? When my plumber comes to install the drain pipe, how far under the top of the sub-floor should I tell him to cut it? Whats the math ? Is there some type of equation? I remember when I went to the kerdi training class several years ago, the instructor mentioned a number, maybe 2 5/8", or something like that, but, he said Schluter didn't have an "official" number.... Or, if the plumber runs the drain pipe wild, and I use an inside pipe cutter, how far down should I make that inside pipe cut below the sub-floor? Thanks...

    The video does not indicate the target thickness of the mortar between 1) the substrate and the shower tray cutout and the 2) drain and the shower tray cutout. I believe the answer is: thickness #1 should be the same thickness that the installer intends to use to attach the shower tray to the substrate and the #2 thickness should be as thin as possible to form a bond to ensure that the drain is not higher than the surface of the tray. Is this right?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 года назад +1

      Hi there! As seen in the video, excess thin-set will be applied to the cutout, but with the drain at a stationary height, very little thin-set will be needed to make the bond between the cutout, substrate, and drain. Also followed mixture procedure of their All set cement and found out that the wall membrane did not adhere to the mold resistant drywall consistently. I couldn't take a chance expecting this membrane to support wall tiles. Schluter warranty is only on paper. They squirm out of honoring their warranty by finding excuses.
