  • is a buzz about Tennessee State University and if the state is about to take over the school.
Word circulating on social media claims a vote is happening this week to remove TSU's Board of Trustees and place it under Tennessee's Board of Regents.
State Representative Harold Love, Jr. posted this letter rejecting there will be a vote happening this week.
    "Good morning, TSU Family.
I am writing to you in response to several communications I have received over the last week.
    1. The $250 million dollars for building repairs and construction that was put in the budget
Jan 2022 was made available to TSU on July 1, 2022, when the new fiscal year started: An additional $92 million was approved before July 1, 2022, for 2 new buildings ($60 million for engineering and $32 million for agriculture).
    2. The State of Tennessee is not trying to make TSU a community college by placing the
administration under TBR: TSU, along with the other state universities, was under TBR,
before the FOCUS ACT of 2016. For the last 7 years, TSU has still utilized TBR to assist with the university's construction projects.
    3. The State of Tennessee is not trying to take over TSU: After the passage of the FOCUS
ACT, the Governor made appointments to the Board of Trustees that had to be confirmed by the state legislature. Each year, there may be members who roll off. TSU currently has two members who are up for reappointment or replacement.
    4. The Government Operations Committee is not treating TSU any differently from other
Higher Education Institutions: Every public university (including the University in
Tennessee) must appear before the Government Operations Committee after its audit to have its Board renewed. Based on previous audit findings, TSU's Board was renewed for two years. The two years are coming to an end, and, by law, the Government Operations Committee must act to make a recommendation based on current audit findings. This is not a special hearing.
    5. There will not be a vote on February 23 to place TSU under TBR: The Senate Ad Hoc
Committee had questions about the current leadership's ability to effectively lead the
university. The Comptroller's office interviewed students, faculty, and staff to gain a better
understanding of complaints they received from parents and students. The committee will
review the report at this hearing. I encourage you to attend the Senate Ad Hoc Education
Committee to hear the report of the Comptroller of the Treasury and the Government
Operations Committee to hear updates on the audit report for TSU.
As a 3rd generation TSU graduate, I have been committed to doing everything that is in the best interest of TSU. I want to make sure all who love the university understand the facts and are properly equipped to advocate for our beloved university. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
In Service, Harold M. Love, Jr."

I am a TSU alumni and for the state to tell the administration that they can't use that money for this and that is ridiculous insane. The state is not on campus and in the dorms everyday to know how deplorable the conditions are. They know that if the living conditions are not suitable, that will cause enrollment to go down and that will fulfill their plan to demolish the HBCU. Why can't TSU sue the state so the TSU administration can decide how to use the funds?

TSU isn't the first HBCU who had this issue ... this is about race and money. It about race because most HBCU's buy out hotels and turn them into dorms for their students. Some even rent them out. However those hotel are owned by whites who don't want to sell or rent to blacks. The state want to take over TSU so that all the money wont go to an HBCU. This is the only time whites like to use diversity. HBCU needs its own govern body.

I get what the state rep. was saying the University cannot use state funds on buildings that are revenue generators and that makes sense...but then the issue comes with State Tax breaks for a new NFL stadium for the Titans. I believe democrats in Tennessee should offer an amendment to state any state funds used as a source of revenue generator then residents of Tennessee should see significant price reductions...in everything from housing cost at Universities to football tickets.

There were black bragging about trump gave HBCU 250milwhich averages out to 3-4 mil ... but Biden gave 5 billion which averages out to 70 mil plus grants and other aids. if the state takes the 75 billion it means TSU board has been paid off. They charge for dorms! What part of that don't you understand? Like a business, if they need more profit, they can easily bump the price in housing.
But ALL of this was preventable if they didn't over book housing. You can't go from an average of 1700 new freshmen to 2300 without a damn plan. That's what they did.

TN has already taken over TSU. They did it in the late 70's. If the board is chosen by the governor and elected by the legislature, it is chosen by conservative republicans. The same legislature which questioned the president. The Agriculture department got it because the state has already taken over TSU. If the state shorted TSU by half a billion dollars and does not allow them to build dorms, how are they going fix the housing problem? The Ag department caters to the rural white counties in TN.

I'm a long time TSU supporter. Grew up in Nashville and love the school. However, when my scholar student decided to follow her mom's footsteps at TSU in Fall 21', shit has gotten real. She received a full ride and freshman dorm room. By the time Spring 22' came around and time to submit for housing, priority was given to incoming freshmen, not existing students. My daughter although given a full ride (including housing,) she had no dorm room.
Basically, someone (the board) decided to take on so many new freshman, there was no available housing for existing students. My daughter then had to enroll for all online classes and stay home last semester.
Fast forward to Spring 23', she was placed in the same predicament and had to take online classes. At the last minute (January 23',) they finally offered her a place outside of campus at the House of God and something.. forgive me as I forget the name. All I can tell you is it's not in a safe area. I know that from my coming up in Nashville.
Long story short, the board (in my opinion) over booked incoming freshmen to the point it caused these issues. Why the hell they did that, needs to be investigated.

Wow! These major Construction companies Construction workers need work. So, therefore, Please allow these Construction companies in Tennessee or elsewhere come to TSU and bulldoze down that Old Institution and Rebuild Tennessee State University, HBCU. There is a Total of "107" HBCU In the South, and they are Old Institutions that need to be Bulldoze down and Rebuilt. There needs to be a complete OVERHAUL of Their Athletic Facilities, Student Dormitories, Athlete Dormitories, Cafeteria's, Academic buildings, Libraries. Hell, even AFRICA Colleges and Universities are (ALL) Modernized and up to standards. Come on HBCUS, Upgrade your Institutions. They should (NOT) be looking like somebody's backyard.
