I just did this job on my wife's 2015 Explorer Sport today. This method definitely works well; however, you need to loosen the subframe bolt to get another couple inches of room to slide the alternator out. I took the pulley off the old and new alternator to get them to squeeze through easier. There's no way it will fit otherwise. From start to finish, it took about 4 hours and I also replaced the belt tensioner at the same time. I upgraded to the 220 amp alternator from the police models - all plug and play, no difference from the 200amp in terms of dimensions/electrical connections. Thanks for posting this! You saved me a ton of time!
Thanks brother, about to start removing my 2nd alternator. I did it the difficult way the first time. Only took about a week to do. (Lol) I am going to try your method this time and will get back with on the outcome. Thanks for posting the video.
Your welcome and thanks for awesome comment, But yeah taking it through the top lot harder I can only imagine some of the few choice words along the way of that week like F this shit lol from doing it that way. I did have to drop sub frame down a little but it fit out bottom pretty easy. Wishing you luck on tackling it easier this time around. My estimated time here was prob 3 hours or less
Tried this method and got into a 2+ hour trap trying to get it out the bottom. Yes I lowered the sub frame, removed pullys from both the compressor and alternator, etc. The air conditioning compressor and hard AC lines are just in the way! It never worked. Resorted to disconnecting upper radiator hose at the radiator, removed airbox, and two small bolts to pull the fans and housing out together. Had the alternator out the top in about 40 minutes. Way easier than this method.
Sorry to hear bro. I never post one thinking it would cause headaches but this truly easiest way for me doing on a lift, I apologize it didn't work out the same
I tried both ways on a police interceptor model it was way easier if You just remove fans and hose in my opinion. Seems like more work but it’s really easy to remove.
You're welcome, got some saying easier to pull the fan assembly out and then pull out from top but IDK that fan assembly in that cruiser looked like a pain to me and on lift this was pretty fair anyways good luck tomorrow and thanks for awesome comment
Hey man! Thanks for your video. I did this on the newer 2016 FPIU and it was a PITA doing it. I mean, I got it out the same way as you did but there's waaaaay less space, even after lowering the frame. Anyways, thanks for your advice. I would have gone with the service manual which would have been me taking apart the whole front end.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing! I'm in the process right now and I've loosened the subframe bolt 3 or 4 full turns but I'm not seeing a gap yet. Is there anything special I need to do to get the sub-frame lowered? I have the vehicle up on jack stands at the pinch welds so nothing under the sub-frame itself. Did you have to loosen both sides?
Man just saw, heck I can't remember off hand, few in comments did it, I forget to mention I removed AC compressor and washer bottle there. I remember I loosened them on lift and think by time I hit opposite side it auto started coming down few inches. Be safe though use jack under to lower or raise
Finally someone with a brain ! I done seen bozos take out everything connected to the radiator…. First time I looked under my hood I knew the way to it is through the bottom
Lol just did one today, car was from Quebec and rustier than sin, the bolts for the washer bottle for just fucked so I didnt even attempt it. Removed the ac compressor and brought it out the bottom

What did u torque the bolt for the sub frame to?

@@RANS87IROCZ Just curious - how did you clear the AC compressor and lines? Couldn't get past those.
@@knussear I had unbolted the compressor being 3 bolts and let it hang there in front which gave me the clearance needed to get alt to drop pass it
@@knussear I must of left that detail out so sorry again
@@RANS87IROCZ you didn't say it out right. But visually you can see the compressor hanging haha
your lucky the 2017 utility 3.7 has a smaller hole and a/c hose I was SHOCKED after all the work
So glad u did this vid, iv been looking for ever on someone doing it...thanks so much..
Your welcome thanks for comment and wasn't to hard of job to be honest just sucks its at the bottom
thank you for the info in the video i will be trying it out on a vehicle today

I did it the same way as you. Took 2 hours. My coworker evacuates AC and removes compressor but I think that’s longer and can create more problems.
Thanks bro. Doing one at work tomorrow.

@@RANS87IROCZ Had it out in 45 mins. New one put in 20 mins. Easy job.
Good job! Thank You!

I felt this way was easier vs out top but others think that out top is easy to do to? Mine had lot crap to get fan out swear

Yeah I had to remove AC also but cool to hear you got it out bottom also
Nice. Did it this way. Have fun on the test drive.
I always love these test drives no doubt 😂 better to be in front seat vs the back
@@RANS87IROCZ give em a boop boop for me 👍
What about the water pump
Sorry haven't done one yet but will upload in future
Water pump is inside the engine and runs off the timing chain. 10 hours of labor to tear into the engine to do it.
Hello just wondering if you know if this procedure would be the same for the taurus police interceptor sedan
If it has the same 3.7L engine then it should be, but being it is a sedan it might even be tighter on the squeeze out at bottom
do you think this will work on a 2014 3.5?
Not to sure to be honest
@@RANS87IROCZ it worked
Can someone clarify what size the alternator bottom bolt is?
15 mm on the lower one I think? 13mm maybe on the top one? Can't remember sorry I failed to mention
@@RANS87IROCZ I believe it is 15mm on lower one. It's pretty corroded so I wanted to make sure I'm not going to strip it
Uh take out the fan assembly, much,, much,, much easier. if it takes you more than a hour and a half to replace alternator, surrender your tools🔧 🔨 ..
Yeah thats true.
