I posted on this 7 years ago, the same has been replicated by the same musicians for several years since……. This is the definitive version and still one of the best things ever posted on RUclips, I’ve just listened to it with my son who is sixteen now, thankfully his generation are getting it…
I met Warren in '91 at the Gorge right after he joined the Allman Bros. Band. He was standing over by the fence alone and I struck up a conversation with him. Quite a good soul and one of America's best guitarists.
omg don't it though I actually have to take a deep breath after its over and I"ve listened to it 20 times already and with headphones it gets even worse I love how it slowly cools down at the end damn I gota smoke a Marlboro red
There can only ever be one Neil Young. Ever. But our man Warren draws the soul of the music out into the fire of this performance that stands right beside Neil's sublime playing on one of his great masterpieces. Thanks to DMB!
Tim Reynolds is one of the most underrated guitarists. Dude can play anything and do it and the top of the game. He shreds acoustic harder than anyone I've seen since the heyday of music in the 60s and 70s.
There is an indie band called Built to Spill that does a live version of Cortez which is absolutely on par with this version.First time I heard this cover and I really enjoyed it. Cudos to Warren for this great performance.Neil's original is still my favorite.
WOW!!!!!! You know Neil is lovin what they did with his song! They slayed that Dragon!!! I agree with Richard's comment (6 below me) This is the best I've ever seen on RUclips.
+Kat Mertens Have you seen Grace Potter and Satriani? Just wondering. It is the "stand out" best in my opinion...and I love these guys...and of course I love ol' Neil. ;-)
this is a beautiful beautiful version of this song..kudos WH and DMB....but, and there is a but...we all know and the end of the night and with the volume turned to up 11 we all end up at the same place....the original....Neil Young is the actual legend....
Goose Bumps, have to say Neil would be proud just like he is about "Type o Negatives" cover of "Cinnamon Girl" one of the few artists left that appreciates the way other artists interpret his songs.
Very nice...wish I could've seen this live. I really like it, at 1:05. Warren says "here I am! Let's go." ETA; I love the cinematography and editing. Well done!
Covers of Neil's songs always make me a little uncomfortable (just HOW badly can can it be messed up?) However - Cortex feels like it was written for Wayne and DMB to take to a place of their very own. LOVE IT
"Cortez the Killer" is a song by Neil Young from his 1975 album, Zuma. It was recorded with the band Crazy Horse It has since been ranked #39 on Guitar World's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos and #329 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Young has stated in concert that he wrote the song while studying history in high school in Winnipeg. According to Young's notes for the album Decade, the song was banned in Spain under Francisco Franco. According to El País and book author Xavier Valiño, the album Zuma was released in Spain in full following Franco's death, with the song renamed to the less inflammatory title "Cortez." ~~~ I ... LOVE IT 2 !!!
The song is typical of the Zuma album - simple, big chords and a bass line that sometimes becomes very powerful and fades again. The song repeats the chords Em7, D and Am7sus4 while Hayes adds his signature solos throughout. It is played in double drop D (DADGBD).
No, he should sing it with Alicia Chakur. (Don't know if I spelled her name right.) Their cover of I'd Rather Go Blind, at the Mountain Fest, is the best I've heard.
June Johnson Too bad you can't enjoy it for having your thoughts interrupted by the sour tones of those musicians of today who arent up to this,,,,,,because you say so. Just stop the whining. You remind me of my parents whining about me listening to anything but Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Bing Crosby, and others at about the time the Beatles and Stones were making their presence known,,,,,,with so much more to come. And every generation has their disgruntled members who think they are the only arbiters of what, 'real,' music is and you are at almost every video I watch and I can't help but wonder why the fuck you even bother. PS- I dig Frank. Two of my adult son's do too but I won't bother telling you about how they waste their time with contemporary music of today
When Neil was in his prime, he could play his own song better than anyone. His harmonics and chords and multi note picks in his Les Paul were just unique. And..Neil’s voice was and is just wonderful. btw, Dave Matthews is just useless. Warren rocks as usual.
How many times you seen Warren live? Only like 15-20 myself which is very few but i can tell you he is far better than good! I was at the Bonnaroo way back when every band there asked him to stand in for a few songs as a nod to his exceptional playing. I was also at a Gov Mule show in Nola for jazzfest when like 20 amazing artist made guest appearances at his late night show so I can assure you that his peers think very highly of Warren Haynes. That's the kind of respect given to greatness and this was like 15yrs ago.

If Warren Haynes doesn't make it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame they should tear the damn thing down.
@@georgecamp1308 they should tear it down anyway!
This cover absolutely took my breath away!
omg don't it though I actually have to take a deep breath after its over and I"ve listened to it 20 times already and with headphones it gets even worse I love how it slowly cools down at the end damn I gota smoke a Marlboro red

There can only ever be one Neil Young. Ever. But our man Warren draws the soul of the music out into the fire of this performance

Just an absolutely amazing performance! Warren kills it on this song
Tim Reynolds is one of the most underrated guitarists. Dude can play anything and do it and the top of the game. He shreds acoustic harder than anyone I've seen since the heyday of music in the 60s and 70s.

My favorite piece of music of all time
Goose Bumps, have to say Neil would be proud just like he is about "Type o Negatives" cover of "Cinnamon Girl" one of the few artists left that appreciates the way other artists interpret his songs.
My God, anyone that loves guitar would have to love this, and anyone that knocks their playing is just plain idiots....
Susan Reed Wow. You assume someone is going to knock this? And who cares if anyone does?
I love guitar...and this😀
God damn Warren!
Very nice...wish I could've seen this live.
I really like it, at 1:05. Warren says "here I am! Let's go."

Dipped in Tone brought me here. WOW!
Quanto mais te ouço, mais te bebo, oh música sem fim
Warren +Gibson+Marshall = sonzeira nota 1000
Warren does a great job with this song period. Huge fan of Neil, but Warren does the singing with his guitar.
You can see Dave's respect for Warren almost everytime he watches him play!
I was thinking the same thing - beautiful to watch
What I wouldn't do to experience this song in person ;-;
Gran version de W.Haynes!!! genial.
I was there for this. It was an amazing night.
Warren the last of the Gods
He really is...one of the last few "real" blues musicians that have that old Southern/R&B groove. A true master
2 words of encouragement.... MARCUS KING!
Hey, what about Dicky Betts too! He is certainly part of the grandeur that we have just witnessed,.

This song needs to be covered by Warren & Grace Potter
No, he should sing it with Alicia Chakur. (Don't know if I spelled her name right.) Their cover of I'd Rather Go Blind, at the Mountain Fest, is the best I've heard.

Warren looks like PAPPO but finner.. if u dont know who papo was, ask google
In Portuguese... Uma Les Paul na mão de um mago.... Mais nada...
ownership..
Don't like the tone of Haynes' Les Paul on this song...especially after listening to the Central Park version...still very good.
Yeah haynes needs to ditch that diaz and stick to that silky smooth soldano
When Neil was in his prime, he could play his own song better than anyone. His harmonics and chords and multi note picks in his Les Paul were just unique. And..Neil’s voice was and is just wonderful. btw, Dave Matthews is just useless. Warren rocks as usual.
Einmalig - besser geht's nicht!
