Davey Knowles might just be the best hard rock / blues guitarist alive right now. I've seen him live 3 times, and he absolutely blew me away, and I've seen some of the greats live - BB King, Pete Townsend, Randy Rhodes, Stevie Ray Vaghn, Carlos Santana, and on and on and on. He's as good technically as any of them, and he's original, sings powerfully, and plays with soul. The first time I saw him play I had no idea who he was or what he was capable of. He closed a blues festival that had some of the best blues rock artists I'd seen in years. All those bands were peacocked up in outrageous or cliched outfits. You know - top-hats, bling, sunglasses, all that horseshit. Then the last act is this nerdy looking kid in plaid. His hair was short, and he was smiling and had that beat up old tele on a simple leather strap. No hair extensions, scarves, headbands - just his guitar and a VOX AC 30 Amp. "Who the hell does this kid think he is, closing for these veterans?" I thought to myself. "What the hell - he must be good if he's closing. Lets see what he can do..." ...and then he started playing. I was FLOORED. I'd never seen or heard anything like it. It actually brought tears to my eyes. He's tapped into the same cosmic river as Hendrix or Vaughn, or the Kings, but it's his own thing. Uniquely expressive licks like you see here up and down the neck fluidly, with that voice and a FANTASTIC band backing him up. The only reason he's not a superstar is because this genre of music isn't especially fashionable right now. But it will come back around, just like roots blues did in the late 80s and early 90s rocketing guys like Gary Moore and Stevie Ray to superstadom. So keep an eye on this kid......
Dressed like he is, in a very Irish town, he might remind you of an Irish Legend, no worries with that, Davey is a very special player and the man him self would have been, I'm sure, be happy to know that there is someone to continue the road ahead.
salut je regarde tes videos, les reprises sont superbes, surtout ceux de Rory Gallagher,et je decouvre Davy Knowles super guitariste quel talent, encore merci.j-f.
Wowzers! I for sure just made a mess in my trousers! But fur real, this is a fckin E P I C version. Not only knocked it out of the park, but in a whole new dimension.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a very real thing... They can't handle the fact that someone is better than them at something and therefore choose to believe (with all facts set aside) that this is fake because it's not them or within the realm of their comprehension. Kinda like Trump...
Saw Dan Patlansky, Devon Allman & Davy Knowles within 10 days. Davy my favourite by a country mile. I previously thought Dan the best Blues/Rock guitarist since SRV, where does that put Davy Knowles!
Sad: I only 'discovered' this guy a few days ago. Awesome: that there are still talents out there for me to discover, however late I may be. A new-old inspiration is a good thing. This may sound weird, but he reminds me of Prince, in how he thrashes that Tele around.
Love this guy! I wish he wouldn't leave out the most important part of the song when he does it live... "What a killer!" Seems like a significant omission.
Great performance. I like this song and others like this by Neil. When i read the lyrics, though, the history is a little glossed at best. The Aztecs themselves where brutal conquerors. War was not only well known in their world, it was a way of life. Still there was greatness lost in the American cultures to Spaniards who were too blind to see, and the there was certainly needless killing and slavery when there was (as usual) so much to offer on each side. Senseless humans throwing it all away.
sory steve, but warren is old name in r'n'r !!! dave is good, but he mast eat a bred for long time to be name like srv, haynes, more, bonamassa ... sory for my bad english best regards from macedonija
Love the guy. Monster player! But please, Davy, how about a song under 10 minutes every now and then. Every DK video on RUclips is 10 to 14 minutes long! They're great, but it's like watching Lord of the Rings when you're in the mood for a sitcom. His concerts must be like only 8 songs. He needs a good A&R guy.
@@HughRogers609 Sorry Hugh, Davy is great, plays a lot of notes, sings with emotion and all that, but he does not do Cortez better nor with more feeling. I'm going be seeing Neil here in about three weeks. I anticipate it may be the best performance I will have seen this year from a musician over the age of 70. Probably better than Nick Mason's tribute to Syd Barrett. Maybe better than Buddy Guy. First time I saw Neil do this song live he was solo, playing a piano and harmonica. Then he was probably close to Davy's age now. And there was more than enough "feeling" coming from the stage to fill the auditorium.
@@Zoetropeification Neil young makes my ears hurt. Cannot listen to him. I've heard his live Cortez and there's only so much emotion you can wring from 2 note repeating solos.
@@HughRogers609 I can understand that. I love Neil Young but his playing and singing can be hard work to listen to at times if you're not a fan (even sometimes if you are!). Davy's version is great although I think my favourite cover is by Gov't Mule.
If not for youtube id never know of this musician! So many great musicians out there in the world.

I just discovered him awsome too !!
I guess I'm late to the party also
One of the few new artists to get excited about these days. What a talent!
His connection with that instrument is indescribable.
long live the 70s guitar solo
Awesome!
The man can play guitar! Keep rocking Davy and band!
I have discorvered Davy few time ago too. Man and guitar are one sole thing. Impressive. This version of Cortez is one of the best I have heard IMO.
have a listen to grace potter with joe santriani

don't think it's a vox here rather a deluxe reverb 65!!
That was an outstanding performance, and that’s no shit sir. It’s now 2021 and I’m just now discovering this. Thank you!
My face is melted
Love how he plays "almost cut my hair, same feeling
Yes it does. Shit slaps, son.
Wow. Looking for different covers of Cortez and stumbled upon this. One of the best covers of this song I’ve heard.
Davy Knowles is a bad mofo. Check out his catalog.
This man is fantastic!
The Neil Young Zuma album is one of my absolute favorites, great to watch a great cover of this!
You play with great feeling and passion, Davy!
Davy Knowles the killer - what a player! He`s the new Rory - if you want to compare them anyway. Keep on rocking.
Yup - Rory is what I was thinking too!! : ))
He's been playing with Gerry McAvoy (RG's bassist) in Band of Friends playing RG standards for a while.

Nothing beats someone wringing the guts out of a telecaster!!
You can really hear the difference between the neck the bridge PU at 3:18

The best thing since Rory!!
****Stars!
This is excellent but this is a heartbreaking song also.
Davy is so good!!!!!!!!!!!! He's better than most guitarists!!!!!!!!! although it's not a competition he gives 1000% every show!
Yes.
Any Neil Young fan ? Lol. Yes !
outstanding!
Why would anybody give a thumbs down?

ssmithlprt Got to meet Davey on my Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea cruise, Feb 2018. What a genuine and humble young man...
Great explanation! Very accurate!
You must have already had the pleasure of meeting live! I noblely envy you! A true wonderful musician!

I agree!
Being nearly 70 all rock songs should be 10 to 14 mins long it's not the words it's the vibes that you feel !
Great player! Bass Solo? Key Solo? Drum Solo?
6:18... 8:15
SAHWHEEEEET!!!!!
Look it's John Bonham on Keys circa 1973!
Like he didn't tell them why
how PC: he avoided KILLER totally .....
screwed the lyrics a little but holy shit that guitar
Un guitariste de bonne facture , il n'a rien inventé, pourtant est bon.
Rory reincarnated.
Je préfère malgrzs tout Eric Steckel !!
Sorry this just doesn't compare with the original.
You're right, it doesn't. Davy does it better and with more feeling. His 'Almost cut my hair' is better than CSNY as well.
