Adore Jimmy Stewart. Cute movie. No one mentioned the stereotyping of every character & culture. How come only the AA in the jail tapped danced? Tsk, tsk. The Irish mom threw salt over her shoulder. I had an Irish Grandma that never did that! But more importantly, they were ahead of their time with music on the radio and call-in contests to increase listenership and ad revenue...BRAVO for that.

'This, the very year that the U.S.A stepped into the 2nd World War; a time when music was at a crackling brilliant peak of creativity. Herein this movie is levity writ large. Or maybe 'levity' proves not quite the ept word. No matter -- I say this. Those syncopated, rhythmic turns in the music and lyrics -- ay, the melody and harmonies -- well, one might agree that we just don't hear merriment like this in music today. 'Would really like to have seen more of those tap dancers there in the jail. 'And, oh!, of the two babe musicians at the start -- the young pianist and trombonist ~~ Wooo... What chops!.

Just think: this movie was released during the year, 1941. Little did anyone know that on the 7th of December of that year, this country would be thrust into war, and James Stewart would become a bomber pilot. The government would institute the military draft and most of the members of the male cast would be sent overseas...some, never to return. A sad thought for such a delightful movie.

Actually B, though no one in U.S. knew it would be Dec 7, plenty of people in Washington D.C. knew it was coming soon. Why?-- because the Japanese gvt was pleading & then insisting that the US stop blockading their oil shipments coming through the Philippine trade route. Oil that they had paid for. Blockading with war ships. For a couple of years BEFORE Pearl Harbor.. What war ships you ask? The 6th fleet, the ships that were attacked in Pearl Harbor.

    a very quirky movie -
too dumb to be a decent screwball comedy -
too forgettable to be a decent musical comedy.
some people love it - and some people hate it -
    and that includes Jimmy Stewart.
Paulette Goddard is pretty - maybe the best thing about the movie.
first time i've watched it all the way through -
    and probably the last.
but Jimmy is still Jimmy - and always wonderful to watch -
even in a movie he didn't like himself.
absolutely bizarre that this absurd give-away radio show concept
was based on an actual radio show of the time.
and how cool is it to see Art Carney -
a decade before he moved to brooklyn and became Ed Norton ? 1:12:43
