As the wife of a retired Family Doctor, this movie reminded me of the times my husband fought insurance companies and bureaucracies on behalf of his patients. Also, the times he missed school plays or recitals because he was holding a patient’s hand while delivering bad news or watching them pass. People don’t understand how much of their patients doctors carry with them, day after day, year after year. The secrets and fears they shared with him are with him even now. Most folks leave the office and don’t give it another thought until they return in the morning. Doctors don’t have that luxury. Their patients become part of them. Their lives are forever inextricably intertwined. Their pain, his pain. Their fears, his fears. Their secrets, his secrets. Even though he now suffers from dementia, I’ll make sure he watches this movie later today. I know it will bring him joy.
He must have been a wonderful doctor, a rare to find. And, you are such an understanding wife. Its not easy to be the spouse of a good, sincere, caring doctor. You sure are one. My prayers for both of you.
Plus if you did know who plays them for no cost?! My favorite An Affair to Remember. The best part is when the little boy says m, “Everyone is talking about you” Carey Grants says well who? He said, “I don’t know every time I go in they leave”!😂 something like that. So when we get together that’s our inside joke about gossipers😂
And hilariously Grants prediction came true. Doctors today ARE electronic. you go to your GP, they input your symptoms into a computer and the computer spits out what you may have and what tests you should be given
Say what you will about the credits of famous actresses. Margaret Hamilton earned hers with her portrayal of the witch in The Wizard of Oz, overshadowed of course by Judy Garland. However, Ms. Hamilton in this movie, professes the highest example of an entertainer that I have EVER witnessed in Hollywood's history! I worked with a Family Physician for many years as a nurse. He was also my physician. I remember patients who were elderly or people who had no insurance bringing in skinned chickens and rabbits to pay on their bill. He always accepted it as payment.

My doctors are great. They face me and we have a conversation, they listen and never look at their watches. I think we had a couple of "better living through science!" generations, but that trend has definitely started to fade out, thank God.
@@carbine090909 My doctors are great too. Its just that for certain ones, my GP for instance, he sold his practice to a big corporation like so many doctors are being forced to do today because of all the paperwork both government and insurance. He is still excellent. Its GETTING to him that's the problem You deal with staff who are not medically minded but corporate minded and never bear in mind they are dealing with sick people. Superb movie with a brilliant and funny script - no one else could have played the part of dr pretorious better than Cary Grant. A natural born actor. Thanks for uploading this great movie.
Seems movies of this era, heavily relied on the dialogue and how the dialogue was presented, not action, and this dialogue, to me, seems to make them timeless and entertaining! I suspect the reliance on dialogue was inherited from the stage, where the scope for action is limited.
What a beautiful film.....compassion.......something today's films seem to lack. Some people have a charisma, not many, but some have a light when they walk into a room, not necessarily looks but the sound of their voice, personality, a light within.
What a remarkable movie! Perhaps the most obscure movie ever, and decades ahead of its time. No wonder it's been lost to cinematic history - the people of that day probably couldn't make heads or tales of it. I've never enountered a denser and more thoughtful script. So much food for thought here!!!
Thank you! This is a favorite movie of mine. It's rare to see it. This is quite unique. Cary Grant plays a doctor who is frankly ahead of his day, practicing holistic medicine. Our American doctors have become even worse than they were back in this movie, with MacDonald's fast food medicine 15 minute in/out, impersonal HMO medicine. The profession has devolved. American medical profession is devoid of soul. Doctors gripe about being rushed and not making enough money. Nobody put a gun to their heads to force them into this line of work. They need to care about individuals, and they need to have heart and compassion. They also need to stop investing in Big Pharma on the side. Our physicians were complicit with Big Pharma and pushed opioids on their patients without shame. Bring back humanity to American medicine.
There still actually are physicians who care for rhe whole person and give them the time needed. I worked for one who spent one day each week in a very poor, rural community. He wasn't Christian, but he'd say that his pro bono cases out there were "AFJ," all for jesus. I discovered he made actual house calls one day in our city, for a fragile older lady with no social support system.
So well written and beautifully acted. One of my favorite movies. Cary Grant and Jeanne Crain had great chemistry. Hume Cronin makes a marvelous villain.
How come all the great movies were made before I was born?Superb acting here.Cary Grant at his usual best. The man is suave, handsome, extremely charming and funny.Beautiful movie.❤
Because there were higher standards and better writing in the past. No cgi no overt sexual themes no vulgar language. And better acting in my opinion. And Cary grant is just wonderful.
A delightful film and so right about the role of a doctor who must above all be a real human being, listen to his patients and give them the will to get better by behaving towards them as if they existed as persons and not only as symptoms. We rely too much nowadays on tests, analyses, pills and shots... And Cary Grant is always so charming !
I honestly love how he’s matured along with his roles. As he was younger he was a goofball and then had serious roles later in life. I will always love his goofball-ness but damn his mature stages were 🤌🏻 eye candy
This film is highly unusual, and it is also highly prophetic about the medical profession. The play, the script, the direction, Cray Grant and others are exceptional. Nobody will ever be able to make a remake of it.
I am part German and thanks for the info. Carey Grant was a gentleman and a good actor for his time. Plus very attractive. I like this movie very much.
This movie is a little gem. It is a film that has stuck with me all through the years. Thanks for posting what has become one of my favorites not just for Grant and Crane, but all those great character actors that appear in it.
This film has heart, humanity wonderful acting and an amazing script by Joe Mankiewicz. It must have seemed so revolutionary for its time. I can't help but marvel about the amazing production values particularly the Frank Lloyd inspired clinic setting so modern and elegant. Building and medical care in perfect harmony with nature. A beautiful work.
Superb film. I've watched it a number of times. And I'll watch it a number of times again. Cary Grant is just great in this film as he is in every film.
Love this movie every time I see it. Got something else out of it this time. Nothing new under the sun. All doctors, et al, should have this perspective. It's not about business, but all about the patient and getting him/her well. Bravo!
This is one of my favorite Cary Grant movies! I have watched it so many times, and my favorite part is the joy he shows when conducting the concert. Every time I hear that piece played, I picture him conducting it! Tears of joy at the end!
Same for me! He really looks like he’s really enjoying singing a few lines & conducting here! I can tell he studied a bit from when he was conducting the Mitchell boy’s choir in The Bishop’s Wife.
Perhaps one of the characteristics of a great movie is whether it can still stand over time - which , for me , this movie represents such. it seems a light comedy but has certain circumstances and dialogue which make it much more . For instance , I loved the part after the train wreck incident Deborah is crying - " ...I put all those candles on your cake and you're really only 9 years old" - very funny!! Yet, the comment of Mr. Shaughnessy to the professor , who instigated the "trial " , ( You're a little man...} was priceless.... and touchingly loyal to Dr. Pretorius. Cary Grant and Jeanne Crain were great, as usual - in fact the whole cast did a great job to make this movie very entertaining. Thank you
This movie is a favorite of mine. Both the protagonist and the antagonist parts were played with real gusto. Grant was the heroic dedicated doctor and Cronyn was the dedicated villen the interaction was well done.
An unusual, thoughtful film. Cary Grant is always a joy to watch, so good looking too. Noah's style of empathic medicine has rather been lost to us now, so the film is quite prophetic in that regard. Much of the film could be called light comedy, but it is quite philosophical too and would have seemed unusual in its day and thought-provoking.
Jeanne Craine was really good at playing characters in movies that dealt with socially taboo topics. Underrated actress. Interesting movie. Love Cary Grant!
Hume Cronyn started with three great roles: as a murder mystery fan in Hitchcocks' SHADOW OF A DOUBT; the most evil prison guard boss in BRUTE FORCE (1947 vs. Burt Lancaster, a real battle of little evil man vs. Big Convict Burt), and this in PEOPLE WILL TALK. The COCOONs and BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED are great bookends for his life in film.
How rare is it to see such a healthy depiction of marriage, a real man isn’t afraid of appearances or a fragile ego. He loved this woman and the child would be their child no matter what. During that era even more it was taboo thank god for Cary grant and his characters we can all learn from
It’s a complete and utter fantasy, it’s in no man’s interest to do something like he did, marry a woman after knowing her no time, and take on her child. Utter insanity

What a beautiful film.....compassion.......something today's films seem to lack. Some people have a charisma, not many, but some have a light when they walk into a room, not necessarily looks but the sound of their voice, personality, a light within.
All the character actors were marvellous ! Can’t make movies like this again. Such a shame.
At least we can look back on them with joy.
I love this movie from start to finish! They just don’t make movies like this anymore which is a shame! Really enjoyed! Thanks!
What a fantastic movie indeed!! Carry Grant, debonair as ever, did a fantastic job together with the cast of great actors! Enjoy!!
What a greatttt story......indeed our world is full of great man of integrity, dignity, honor and understanding,
What a remarkable movie! Perhaps the most obscure movie ever, and decades ahead of its time. No wonder it's been lost to cinematic history - the people of that day probably couldn't make heads or tales of it. I've never enountered a denser and more thoughtful script. So much food for thought here!!!
I love the old classics, wherein movies were dedicated to certain groups of society, with words of encouragement and gratitude.
We are blessed with our family Dr. he takes his time with us and he really does listen. Also he’s very caring. I wish more Dr’s were like this
Wow, what a story, what a movie, what acting 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻❤

So well written and beautifully acted. One of my favorite movies. Cary Grant and Jeanne Crain had great chemistry. Hume Cronin makes a marvelous villain.
Loved the calm and on-point dressing down that Shunderson gave Elwell at the end. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@patricebetts6531 I "ll add this. No politically charged messaging in those days
@@bharatg8542 You’re absolutely correct!
Ha very first character is the woman that plays the bad witch in the Wizard of Oz! What a great actress 😄👍
She was the housekeeper who stole from him in his story later...it explained her sneaky behavior. Great actress ...
Margaret Hamilton is her name. I was lucky enough to see her summer home one day day in Southport Maine, she lived near my mother in law.
I knew when I saw that first scene that we were in for a good movie!
It's very oddly directed. The characters act out of character.
@@cheryldevine42 how cool that is!
The dialogue is superb! What a good movie and I love that mega train set.
Truly!
DR😷 CARY GRANT!🤤😊🥰😍🤩😏😺😸😹😻😼😽
What a remarkable movie! Kindness and compassion so important for life.
I honestly love how he’s matured along with his roles. As he was younger he was a goofball and then had serious roles later in life. I will always love his goofball-ness but damn his mature stages were 🤌🏻 eye candy

of all the very good actors and actresses in this movie, my favourite is the dog he outplays them all and doesn't say a word brilliant
This is so unbelievably unique. I love old films and Cary Grant and had never heard of this.
Cary Grant is The GOAT!
YES HE IS!!! ♥️ 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
So true
One of my favorite Cary Grants movies. The conversations are just elegant.
Back in the days when people - especially ladies - never used dirty words in public and took great care to speak as nicely as possible.
It’s one of mine, too! I LOVE this movie!

One of my favorite Cary Grant movies, also!
I’ve become Un Doctored. No doctor of today can heal me of any dis ease.
Dr Noah is the epitome of love for humanity.
I love the main character of Dr. Praetorious for his compassion and nobility in the true sense.
"Your a little man and now your even smaller than before " great movie line.... very good and unusual movie for its time.
Outstanding. It is a shame that there are no movies being made today of such quality.
This film is highly unusual, and it is also highly prophetic about the medical profession. The play, the script, the direction, Cray Grant and others are exceptional. Nobody will ever be able to make a remake of it.
Most prophetic in the mention of automated or electronic doctoring ,with robotic surgery now in its infancy.
@@bobbythorman7421 That's right! I thought of the same the moment I read the message above.
@kuldipdhiman Nonetheless, since Hollywood is completely devoid of creativity, they will eventually work their way around to remaking this one.
😀 In deed

I am part German and thanks for the info. Carey Grant was a gentleman and a good actor for his time. Plus very attractive. I like this movie very much.
He was a good actor for any time, it just then. He's withstood the test of time. It was a combination of talent plus good choices of manuscripts.
This movie is a little gem. It is a film that has stuck with me all through the years. Thanks for posting what has become one of my favorites not just for Grant and Crane, but all those great character actors that appear in it.
One of my favorites… I love this story!

Love these classic clean movies! No cussing, violence nor nudity!
Thank you, for this wonderful movie, and all these truly meaningful masterpieces of the past -- that you show and share with all of us!!! ❤
Thank you

Doctors don’t take the time to understand their patients.

1:25:30 to 1:26. That close up with the accompanying dialogue. Talented professionals at their best. Love it!!
I disagree. In its day, it was a big hit.
@@elainedaprano9130 IT STILL IS!😂😅
Jeanne Craine was really good at playing characters in movies that dealt with socially taboo topics. Underrated actress. Interesting movie. Love Cary Grant!

One of my favorite movies of Cary grants. He is such a wonderful actor in does such a great job.
Shunderson (Findlay Currie) delivers one of the best soliloquies to shut down The Bad Guy.
