I played college football as a kicker for Appalachian state. Never had a come down to the wire kick that won us the game, but I always dreamt of having one. Needless to say, I wasn't even close to being good enough to kick in the NFL but it was a cool experience playing college ball.
As far as the 2015 Pinstripe Bowl goes, the only person on the field who know the truth of that kick was the ref under that goal post. Because of whatever angle you view that kick from it will look differently. The NCAA rules are a little vague but Rule 8, section 4, article 1b states "If a legal field goal attempt passes over the crossbar between the uprights and is dead beyond the end line or is blown back but does not return over the crossbar and is dead anywhere, it shall score a field goal. The crossbar and uprights are treated as a line, not a plane, in determining forward progress of the ball." My interpretation of it is that had the upright continued upward that the ball would have hit the upright not crossing the crossbar between the uprights. And Rule 12, section 3, article 1b states "Field goal attempts if and only if the ball is ruled (a) below or above the crossbar or (b) inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights. If the ball is higher than the top of the uprights as it crosses the end line, the play may not be reviewed." which is why it was not reviewed.
