  • In this video I will be forging a bar of 1084 steel into an ABS (American Bladesmith Society) journeyman smith performance test knife. After the knife is forged, the blade is rough ground then heat treated. Then final grinding, handle installation and the actual performance test from beginning to end. #abstestknife #performancetestknife

    Really nice tutorial again!
    I certainly got something out of it.
    I like that you get information from Larrin Thomas/KSN and keep your metallurgical knowledge up to date. A lot of knifemakers with as many years of experience as you would think they know it all.
    I also like that you openly mention what you would do differently at the end.
    You're a humble man and I have a lot of respect for that.
    Thanks a lot for sharing all this info.

      Hey man, yeah I took a long break from RUclips. Life circumstances etc. I’m no longer working in the film industry. It’s a viscous pit of snakes to say the least! But I’m back on youtube now and focused totally on bladesmith work. But yes I’ve been a bladesmith/knifemaker for over 30 years. Thanks for watching and I hope you hang around. Thanks!!

    Beautiful job Tony. I love that you said you lucked out on the testing because any of us that have been watching your videos know there was about 5-10% luck and 90-95% skill lol. You always do beautiful work. Wishing the best of success on your journey for the journeyman testing.

      Thank you and you’re welcome. I try to share what I can. However I do understand the hesitation from folks. I’ve done this over 30 years and have paid dearly for training. Just 6 weeks ago I paid for a class. Looking at my followers across 4 social media platforms, I have more than 130,000 followers. Out of that many followers I have THREE patrons on my Patreon. The reciprocation is hardly measurable. So I definitely understand. 😁

    This is something I have been putting off for awhile. Just don’t know where to begin the process. I guess the first step is to believe in myself and find someone local for assistance. I live in Mt Airy NC. If you know anyone close that could help I would be appreciative. Great knife and test. Well done sr.

      I don’t personally know anyone in your area but if you go to the American Bladesmith Society website, you can access a list of journeyman and mastersmiths around the country. They list by locations. 😁

      @@TonySeverioKnives awesome. Thank you. I have been making knives for a few years and I certainly don’t know everything. I try to make the best possible knife with what I have however I really need professional advice and criticism from the makers who have a lot more experience then I. I will get up the courage and contact someone.

    Dang.....my knives are just under a quarter inch thick. What is the best thickness for this test?

    • @TonySeverioKnives
      @TonySeverioKnives  3 месяца назад +1

      If it’s too thick, it’s just takes more strength to bend it. As long as the heat treat is good and you can bend it, you’re good. My actual test knife was about 5/32 thick.
