  • Wearing luxury to the work place can be a mind field, women are judged much harsher than men. If a man wears a luxury watch or drives a luxury car, it will not attract the same level of judgement as a women wearing a luxury handbag or luxury jewellery to work. As a business owner who still works full time in the business, this is something I have to navigate from both sides of the perspective. In this video I share with you 5 reasons why it might not be a good idea for you to wear your luxury items to work. This isn't right, but unfortunately can be a reality.

Trust me on this - jealous people will remain jealous no matter the price of your item. I remember working in an office with very jaded, evil people that used to comment on my H&M earrings daily (3 Euro a pair, back then... so far away from luxury). I never wore anything expensive or special to that place and still got unpleasant comments from those jealous, disgusting people... That taught me, envy and jealousy do not care about price tags. If they're there, they'll always be. Regardless of the item you wear.

This is EXACTLY my experience. People will gossip and talk and if you try to make yourself a small target, it only panders to their power. Best to brazen it out, even though it hurts. Wearing flashy styles might not be the go, so wearing more neutral or less attention getting designs might work better. Also wear the same bags over and over so it's not a passing parade. Regardless don't overthink it... if you perform at a high level, they will need you and promote you.

So true, lux or not, jealous co-workers(friends?) will always judge us. Only here in youtube, 2 of my sisters and one friend that truly understand my love for lux😢. My supposed friends kinda ghosted me when I posted my lux progress like they want me to stay like what I was before(don't have lux). It's like they hated I got it first or that I ever have them.

I work in a male dominated field. My work parking lot is filled with the latest souped up top model cars, trucks, motorcycles and even vintage cars. The men all congratulate each other and geek out about their new purchases. The women not the same. A woman wearing a new shirt with no branding can trigger passive aggressive comments in the office. There's definitely a double standard, and we women are the ones enforing it. It's sad really.

The only luxury item someone brought in where I used to work was an LV bag. I don’t know what style, but I did think it was really nice. Oh dear 😅, don't show them your luxury bags, don't show them that you're smart, don't show them that you're beautiful, don't show them that you're wealthy, don't show them that you're talented, don't show them that you can do the job properly, don't show them that you're happy and content in life... And then you find yourself in the workspace with a bunch of miserable creatures, all because: read above. And if you consider that you are an avarage of people you're surrounded with, then good luck... How about not forcing yourselves to that job that is probably underpaid anyway and start living true to our soul purpose 😊

Agree - I have been a successful realtor outside New York City for 25 years. I rarely carry an expensive bag into appointments. Once I get to know a client more they may see a nice bag, but definitely not for initial meetings. I also never carry a bag into showings I only carry my keys, my listing and my card. I could not agree more with what you are saying. Also I drive a nice car but not a flashy car because as an agent people see my car often . This is also a reason to NOT have colleagues on your social media, watching everything you do and wear every day. I have always blocked all other agents on my socials it’s a universal decision and it has served me very well.

I’m one of those who wear luxury at work and people know about my channel and I actively engage with people who ask and have found fellow bag, shoe and watch lovers because of it. About 1 year ago, i start to carry all my luxury handbags to work which i don't used to bring. I changed my mind because i am already in my mid 40s. How many 10 years we could have in our life? Plus i dont want my handbags to sit in my shelves most of the time. I want to enjoy them as much as i can in my life. I do notice some of my colleagues stare at my handbags. I have to say, this is NOT the position I was expecting Amelia Rose to have on this issue. Who wants to work at a company that determines promotions and salary increases based on what employees wear or on whether employees are in need of more money? Who actually thinks employers are that knowledgeable about bags to make that kind of determination? We luxury handbag lovers may have bags on the brain 24/7, but most people do not. Are 2023 adult workplaces really the same as high school? People will be jealous and mean??? And if they are, are there adult people really caring about this?
I was totally expecting “wear what you want, do your job well, and be kind to people”. Not “means girls and vindictive employers are real”.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been wearing luxury to work for about 15 years, as an employee and as a boss, in the non-profit and the private sector. It has not affected me work wise nor relationship wise. Seriously, no one cares. I’m seriously wondering, are men being warned not to wear expensive watches or drive nice cars for fear of not getting raises or promotions?

I love my handbags, love to use it but not at workplace. The most i carry would be those contemporary brands. Yes there are some in the organization love to show off, carrying Berkin Hermes and perhaps changing it quite a fair bit, i am thinking the same too. She spends all her money on those stuff...I see where you are coming from. Yeah i wish i would have a little more courage to use it at the workplace and don't care what people think. But the argument may also arise if we do not use it at the workplace, do we have so many occasions to use it or to rotate these handbags? But thus far, i do not carry these luxury handbags to work. Like those luxury jewelry that is not in your face, i do not mind, certainly not Cartier Love bracelet or JUC. Those more low-key Cartier pieces like the Diamond necklace that do not scream Cartier, i worn it every day 😂☺

Amelia, truer words were never said. I think Sophie Shohet made a video about this too and I think you are both right. I am an independent contractor and have rarely worn what I have to the office or out and about because I was always worried about other peoples perspective. I am now over 60 and have decided I am going to use what I have! Though, LOL, last year I wore my Fendace heels to the Christmas party and an attendee, "how much did those cost? I would rather spend my money on travel." I looked at her and said, "Yes, I do both, I went to Egypt and was inside the pyramid of Khufu and sailed down the Nile, and You?". The stinker in me loved it but I do get several comments, "where did that come from??" Well I have had these bags and things for years and just not worn them out. I would not bring them to an appointment and still drive a mid range car! I love looking at my closet---brings me joy. If I was someone trying to prove myself at a job---def would not be bringing!

I agree but I also think that it depends on your workplace too. You should judge the situation accordingly but still try to retain your individuality and passion. I wear most of my luxury bags to my current role with no problems (except Chanel as it’s too recognisable and I feel sometimes that it doesn’t work in a professional environment) but I would definitely have received all of those passive aggressive comments at my old place despite those people earning way more money than I was on at the time. That said, I do feel that I chose more subdued bags before I got the promotion that I was actively working towards (Mulberry, Prada, Givenchy, Celine) and despite having global clients I will always wear a discrete logo/contemporary for meetings as I feel that’s a more professional approach. I do see luxury and contemporary bags where I work though it’s mainly in the London offices. That certainly doesn’t stop me from wearing mine!

I even once accidentally spilled hot coffee in it ! I cleaned it out and it still goes to work, looks and functions fantastically. So for work, I look for something carefree that I can do real damage to and not really worry about it. A Chanel bag really isn’t hardwearing enough in my opinion. I do occasionally take my luxe bags, but then I find I’m having to be extra careful. I agree with the risk of possible judgment in the workplace. This presents a challenge- when and where do you wear these bags, if you live a normal, rather then glamorous, full of events lifestyle. To a casual restaurant? Playground? Kids events? Family gatherings? Meeting a friend? These events don’t preclude judgement and a luxury handbag could be seen as inappropriate.

Hi @ameliarosescloset, I love the conversations you've been having lately about luxury. I also love your collection, it's fun yet beautiful.
Could you make a video about the idea of showing off designer items? I got a couple comments from friends that made me think about this. I never bought my designer items with the intention of showing off. When I didn't have designer items, I didn't see other people with them and think they're showing off. I just thought that's a nice shoe or purse; not that this person is showing off, or thinks that they're better than anyone. It's strange to me to hear these assumptions come up in my personal life and in luxury conversations on RUclips. I don't have many designer items, and don't wear them as often as I would like because of this idea of showing off. I feel like I just like pretty things, but is it actually showing off?

Is a very annoying situation and very difficult to balance. You buy those things because you want to wear them, but then you can not ware them because they affect the ego of the others and consequently your future. I already feel like my middle range 2nd hand car caused to much attention now imagine if I would bring a luxury bag to work😢. There are just professional environments that are worst than others. My previous company was more relaxed on this maybe because there was lots of people with expensive hobbies. In this company even the fact I come with a high street matching set (without logos) gets often comments like : “I don’t even want to seat down close to you. You make me look bad”. When comments like this happen once is even cute, but when is constante it becomes annoying. I never had situations like this at my 2 previous employers. I try to adjust to my environment, but I also do not want to walk around everyday on a wrinkly hard-rock t-shirt just because makes the others happy. With almost 50 years, I also want to wear the collection of nice things (just a few are luxury) that I built over the years. Again, is very difficult to find the right balance in certain environments 😞. I have a friend that has similar issues with family members what I suppose is even worst. There will always be people that can not see a poor man with a freshly washed shirt without feeling jealous.😅

I’m a teacher (year 40 in education), I didn’t start rotating my luxury bags into my day to day until recently…I tell colleagues and even students that I didn’t treat myself to luxury until after sending both of my kids to uni and paying tuition for 8 years straight. During those years I didn’t travel, buy new cars or even buy many clothes. For three years after my youngest graduated I kept to that budget and put the “tuition money” into my savings. I worked hard and tell my students that they need to treat themselves and pay cash for their treats.

Honestly I used to think the same but as I’ve gotten older I mentally just tell them to go to hell. I’ve worked my ass off and want to enjoy what I’ve worked for.

I wear my luxury items everywhere. Jealous people are everywhere and I use my neverful everyday because it fits my laptop.

Oh dear...I ❤ your channel, but I do disagree. Why are you working if you are stressedabout showing the luxuries you want to buy with the rewards of your paycheck. Whoever has a problem with your success and joy needs to move down the road. I enjoy my victories and enjoy spending money on luxury bags i've worked hard to purchase. Life is for empowering your success and joys! There's no room in life in being apologetic to jealousy and people who wish you ill will. Great video❤❤ 🇺🇸

    Amelia
I enjoy your videos and respect your opinion, but you are on youtube showing your beautiful bags.
You think people at your workplace aren’t aware of your youtube videos?
Your video is confusing to me.
I have lots of luxury bags and use them according to the occasion.
i try to be kind and mindful, most of my bags are for my eyes only (and my family when they go to my closet)
not because im afraid of wearing them at work, i buy handbags because i enjoy looking at them and wearing then at appropriate times.
A classic chanel double flap bag is out of place in my daily work environment. A chanel tote or lv tote bag is perfect!

      Makes sense now, but
      how?
I would love to start my chanel if i could keep it a secret from people i work with.
Or people you work with are not interested in handbags?
      Thank you for clarifying ❤
