    This fight shows a huge difference between Team RWBY and the Ace Ops with how the latter was beaten that quickly one by one. Although it's true the Ace Ops are more experienced, they fail in terms of teamwork and communication compared to Team RWBY. However I'm guessing Ace Ops weren't all in agreement on having to go all out with Vine and Marrow holding back messed with their overall cooperation nor have they ever had to deal with crisis aversion in the off chance one of their members are knocked out. Another comparison is Ace Ops graduated from Huntsmen academy and trained in a controlled environment while you have Team RWBY and JNR having their academic years ripped from them and they had to cross the wilds to get to one kingdom and then again to get to Atlas having to contend with some of the most dangerous Grimm you can imagine and Salem's agents. Not only that, some of them had to go through mental and physical rehab/ readjust their fighting styles while even having to heavily compensate for losing one of their members.

      That doesn't feel right though. They're a elite team, even if they're not friends they should still be able to work efficiently as a team. Friendship isn't a requirement to be a good team or to work with people effectively but yes it does help. I would have liked it better if they said Ace Ops were a newly graduated team then I wouldn't find this unlikely.

      I’m with adept king, if it was just a matter of them panicking about the incoming army and the anxiety about what happens if they don’t capture team RWBY it would have been more believable when they slip up, elms anger comes out of nowhere and even if they have to be professionals they can still be good coworkers and semi friends.

    • @shadowhunter0815

      @@AdeptKing It didn't help that the Ace Ops seemed to have some internal struggles and disagrements with the situation.
      While they had the training it's clear they don't have the expirience where their emotions came in conflict with their mission/ fight, while Team RWBY had already to overcome such issues.

    • @destarker1340
      @destarker1340 5 лет назад +216

      It also didn't help that team RWBY works as a group of four and do 4v4 fights while ace ops are a team of five and that specializes in fighting grims and not hunters

What could yang really say. She is a proud atlessian knight. That bait was low hanging unimportant fruit. Elm shouldnt have fallen for it and continued to restrain blake. Threaten for a surrender. But i guess since none of these guys use particularly edgy weaponry then they really couldnt threaten her with much.

    All of the Ace-Ops were defeated the way their counterparts were:
    1. Harriet relied too much on speed and not enough on rational tactics, much like how the hare tired himself out and lost to the tortoise.
    2. Vine and Elm tried to fight Blake and Yang separately rather than supporting one another, as the elm and the vine did in the original fable.
    3. Marrow simply didn't use common sense at all, much like how the dog foolishly lept into the river and drowned (or got washed away to shore in some versions).

      Ruby is a Huntress and most of the time that involves hunting Grimm out in the wild where wide open spaces are plentiful and Crescent Rose is most powerful. Grimm are less lively to be found in close quarters the exception being mines, sewers and caves plus her semblance is ideal for getting to the best distance from her enemy to attack. A way to retract her scythe into a Sickle would be a good upgrade though.

    I think Ruby realizes that Harriet is the biggest threat to the rest of her team. She purposefully separates her from the rest of the team by baiting her, knowing that Harriet has the biggest potential to lend support where its needed. With a speed semblance you can be everywhere at once, jumping in and out of action to be where you're most needed. Ruby knows that Harriet is faster than her, they already tested it, he semblance is more versatile, but for lending support it's not as good as Harriet's.
    Ruby has to trust that her will cooperate and come out on top without her support, and they do, but only because Harriet lets herself be baited away from the team she's supposed to support. I think this leads back to the conversation they had earlier about being friends vs being on a team.
    I think it's possible that Harriet assumes that team RWBY doesn't have the discipline to survive losing their leader, meaning that if she can take out Ruby quickly, the rest of the team will surrender without a fight. However, she underestimates Ruby as a strategist and a fighter, losing her team the fight.

    The main reason why Ace Ops lost is because of the culture ingrained within the Atlas. Each one of the team was picked to best compliment the overall performance without the consideration for their cohesiveness as a unit. Additionally, since the Ace Ops works like a machine, removing the Leader (Clover) means that they lack the direction.
    We have seen that Atlas is very big on following the orders of those with higher authority. In a normal situation, Clover would be there to call the shots and determine how much force their team can use. But without him, there is no one to reign them all in and so their own tempers clash.

    • @extranerdinarytroper4835
      @extranerdinarytroper4835 4 года назад +49

      @Emiko Lina With Marrow, I would say that the poor match played the role in his defeat. He's demonstrated the ability to freeze large amount of targets as long as he faces them directly. It was simply bad match-up for him to face Weiss whose summons can move independently.
      Personal opinion, but I wouldn't call Elm's or Vine's Semblances particularly powerful either. While Vine's allows him better mobility and longer reach, it greatly relies on his own speed. Elm's depends on having the solid surface under her feet which played the part in her defeat.
      Harriet is the best example of the flaws in the team structuring of Atlas and of the whole idea of "cold hard logic". She sees herself as the soldier that impersonally follows the orders but she allows her own competitiveness get better off her and focus solely on Ruby.
      The issue of the lack of leadership comes in that while they weren't told to hold back, they also differ in the idea of how they should bring the team RWBY in.

    • @extranerdinarytroper4835
      @extranerdinarytroper4835 4 года назад +17

      @Emiko Lina I think in order to win, the change of match-up would be enough.
      Vine and Marrow versus Yang and Blake. Vine would need to use his Semblance to temporarily bring both of them close enough for Marrow to freeze them.
      Harriet and Elm versus Ruby and Weiss. Harriet would need to take out Weiss first before she could properly summon the knight and then help Elm deal with Ruby.
      In both cases, their situations woul be improved by the Ace Ops members agreeing on the level of force used.

    This has got to be the best fight of the show so far
    Yang and Blake's battle was incredible. Not only did both of them take some epically heavy hits, but they dealt some out too, and that final blow on Elm was a corker. Funny how Yang riled Elm up to get her to hit heavy and get angry.... the same technique that Neon Katt used in the Tournament back in Season 3.
    Weiss vs. Marrow.... finally Weiss' first decisive solo win. She was quick-minded, understanding that Marrow could only hold one thing off at once, and as soon as her Guardian was out, she had that battle in the bag. He couldn't handle two things at once. Marrow's semblance I absolutely love.
    Ruby vs. Harriet... she was determined to win. That moment where she got Ruby face-down made my breath catch, but in the end her anger also got the better of her. Plus Blake and Yang's victory over Vine was the nail in the coffin... it showed the rest of the Ace Ops that they weren't as invincible as they believed. That gave Harriet motivation, but it also blinded her. She could have gone back to help Elm, knowing who she was up against, but she was fixated. With her speed I'm sure she could have tried to slip in a few hits with Yang and Blake, but instead she focused on the 1v1.
    Music was awesome in the second half 2:53 onwards. Teamwork vs. division is the difference when skill is matched. Fantastic fight, RT have come so far. It's a shame people watched this episode and got their back up about the whole Qrow Clover situation instead of focusing on this.

      I think Ruby was the one most outmatchd in her 1v1, but she was also the only one trying to use reason. I think when she finally accepted that Harriet wasn't going to stop is when you see her turn things around. Her clever use of Petal Burst to pull a reverse on Harriet was choice. Harriet's refusal to give up even with her arms bound was also fucking great to see, and clearly caught Ruby off-guard for a moment. Still, Ruby didn't look completely out of her element vs. a non-Grimm opponent this time around. I gotta rant because this is by far my favorite fight in RWBY.
    It’s clear throughout the series that the AceOps are strong - but only together. They are a great team but can’t operate as efficiently as individuals. They rely too much on the others being there to back them up (as Harriet remarks after they secure the Schnee Mines), whereas RWBY can operate apart from each other. Their separation for volume 4-5 helped the, grow as individuals without relying on the others. how team RWBY fights them is incredible because they target the AceOps weaknesses while playing to their strengths.
    Ruby vs Harriet: Harriet is practically the leader when Clover isn’t there, so by separating her from the group Ruby is able to keep Harriet from unifying the Ace Ops. Ruby also edges her on by pulling out Harriets competitive side by challenging her and drawing her away in a race. We can also see how Ruby’s close combat has improved from Volume 5/6.
    Weiss vs Marrow: by separating Marrow from the group, his semblance cant be as effective - especially against Weiss who can summon creatures that can act apart from her. Also, where Marrow is hesitant, Weiss isn’t holding back (heck, she nearly skewers him). She could see his hesitation and used it against him.
    Blake and Yang vs Vine and Elm: Blake and Yang pull the two Ace Ops who have the least chemistry together. Vine and Elm have varying fighting styles and personal beliefs that make them incompatible together. Yang and Blake are practically one, being able to fight toward the same goal without needing to communicate. Just a glance and they already know what they need to do to support the other. It was also vital for Yang, the tank for RWBY, to pull Elm, the tank for the Ace Ops. Yang can take Elms hits while the other members of team RWBY can’t match her brute force. It is also obvious how much Yang has grown as a fighter, where she attacks the floor instead of Elm. This move takes The effectiveness of Elm’s semblance away.
    This fight encapsulates the growth of team RWBY, as a team and individually. Massive props to the writers for this awesome fight scene!

    RWBY Vs Ace Ops might be my favorite fight tied with Blake and Yang Vs Adam. Like the mentioned fight, it tells a story. Ruby knows that Harriet is the most over confident and competitive so she taunts her making her leave the room, knowing her speed could lead to her immediately handcuffing everyone. Yang never matches Elm in strength, but we know that she can tank the hits from her shown by her fight with Adam and the Torchwick mech. Weiss uses a semi Freezerburn tactic and ice shards to distract Marrow long enough to use her semblance which we know takes a bit of time to activate. Yang taunts Elm, a character like her who is very driven by emotion and is very passionate about what she does and her morals, a tactic that she’s used against Adam and learned from her past mistakes. While some people could roll their eyes at Yang’s taunt, I saw it more as strategy. As little we’ve seen of the Ace Ops, they do care about people and want to protect them. However they are still loyal to Ironwood. They have conflicting emotions. From my perspective, Marrow is the only one upfront about it due to being the newbie and relative child of the group. Yang knew this would get under Elm’s skin since she is prone to emotion (shown in Episode 2) which is why she did it. This angers Elm and she lets go of Blake. In the only time Elm and Yang have a strength contest, Yang uses her gauntlets to distract her and knock her away while freeing Blake. They then take out the ranged fighter by slyly using slight of hand with the hand gauntlets. They then destroy the ground with Vine and with more gauntlet blasts to destroy the very thing that makes Elm and immovable object. All this while Blake is distracting her. Yang goes against the rocket launcher, and feigns a hit then hits the ground. This launches Elm into the air where Blake is and they pull of a Yin and Yang punch. Weiss uses her surroundings and environment to corner Marrow. Due to the support from her semblance, she’s able to tire Marrow out and land a fire blast. Ruby uses her semblance to counter Harriet’s and handcuffs her, disabling her long enough for Weiss to come in with the clutch. The closed environment was used in a way we haven’t really seen used before. While the characters have fought In closed spaces, it always felt like they had as much room as they needed in order to move around. This time, the characters are bouncing off walls for momentum, being slammed into walls to cause more damage, and using the environment to their advantage to the fullest like with Weiss and Yang. Yang’s fight with Elm especially shows how much she’s grown. Yang Volume 1-4 would’ve just charged head on, but she used legitimate strategy this time. That’s why Team Rwby won this fight. Strategy and teamwork. Say what you will about the Power of Friendship, it can be used well and used poorly. It was used well here. Team Rwby didn’t win because their love for each other pulled them through. Ruby trusted her team enough to take care of the rest of the Ace Ops when all she had to do was at least keep pace with Harriet. Weiss is clearly stronger than Marrow and has more to her advantage such as her semblance. The Ace Ops are partners and that’s about it. While they do have decent strategy (shown in Episode 3) they never really worked in tandem with each other to the extent of RWBY. Blake and Yang have such a strong bond due to all they’ve been through that they can tell each other which combo attack to use with just a look. The fact that the Ace Ops all had conflicting feelings on how hard to go against RWBY also goes to show that this isn’t a strong team, it’s just a strong set of individuals put together. Another thing to note is that they were only chosen because of complimentary semblances. So while they might work well together, it still leaves open some predictability as they were only chosen because of that. Team RWBY have semblances and fighting styles very different from each other, but that just makes them more unpredictable. Marrow pointing this out earlier in the Volume shows that at surface level, Team RWBY shouldn’t really work well with each other. However, precisely due to their friendship instead of being simple acquaintances, they are able to know the ins and outs of each other’s fighting styles. They’ve gotten time to know each other, how they fight, how they think, how they react, and this goes well with Blake and Yang. Elm and Vine were not expecting for the two to work so well in tandem and that is one of the many reasons they lost.

    The remarks on what happened in the fight inspired me to make observations on what happened in this fight tactically and strategically. I do love this fight scene, myself, but it became even more appreciated when I started to pay attention to the overall picture and how the smaller details of the fight contributed to the result. Prepare for a wall (of text) that would make Ironwood proud.
    Weiss won in a one-on-one engagement due to overwhelming the enemy semblance with the properties of her own allowing control of a summoned ally, making it a virtual two-on-one... she also received brief assistance from Ruby. Marrow committed an error being over-reliant on his semblance, not realizing quickly enough that stopping one combatant meant releasing the other and that his pseudo-timestop could be easily circumvented because of this. If he had been in either of the other two engagements, he'd have been more helpful and could have been the deciding factor of the fight since he'd either stop Ruby dead in her tracks or neutralize the teaming threat of Blake and Yang's formation. The first tactical mistake of the fight on the part of the Ace Ops may actually be that Marrow didn't use his semblance on Ruby at the onset, since she would be the most likely to manage escaping the surrounding formation uncontested (while technically not true, overestimating her could have worked out for the Ace Ops).
    Yang and Blake won by coordinating two separate individual eliminations to defeat the enemy formation in a two-on-two engagement. Their fight was probably the hardest of the set, but their teamwork and bond made them harder. Juking Elm to gang up on Vine with quick, opportunistic guile set the pace of every other engagement from that point forward, since their presumed eventual victory in a two-on-one scenario would pressure the enemy to swiftly wrap up their fights to assist, leading to mistakes. It's uncertain if there was a better place in the fight for Elm or Vine, since Elm doesn't have a dexterity that pairs well against either Ruby or Weiss while Vine seems to be better off playing support rather than fighting alone. If Vine and Marrow had switched, though, the fight may have had a different balance. Vine may not have been outclassed by Weiss in the same way Marrow had been, but, more importantly, Marrow would likely decide the fight against Blake and Yang with his semblance while Elm could potentially neutralize either one by themselves. This, I would say, may be the first STRATEGIC mistake of the fight by the Ace Ops for not splitting up more appropriately.
    Ruby occupied what was probably the most individually competent enemy in a one-on-one chase, aggroing Harriet into cutting off her escape (presumably to get help), long enough for other engagements to resolve and receive assistance from Weiss, resulting in an eventual two-on-one surprise that secured victory. Managing to bind Harriet, who made the mistake of attempting an arrest against someone with a semblance that can partially dematerialize Ruby, contributed to a loss of Harriet's offensive options that enabled the result. Frankly, Ruby would have to have her aura depleted first, if not outright knocked unconscious to take her alive without a more appropriate semblance or scheme to stop her. Unfortunately, Harriet couldn't manage that when their speeds were evenly matched. Harriet in this case would have been better off engaging Weiss than anyone else in the Ace Ops, but Ruby's speed ultimately dictated that Harriet commit to stopping her. This engagement starting decided the entire battle's strategic split, determining the flow of the entire fight. While Ruby didn't decisively beat anyone herself, per se, she catalyzed the victory by running off.
    It's worth noting that not a single fight here was won with members of Team RWBY being completely by themselves (if you can accept that Weiss is never "alone" so long as her semblance is in effect). Also, whether intentional or not, fan-favorite team pairs (Bumblebee and White Rose) were used to attain victory. Meanwhile, two members of the Ace Ops were essentially made to engage in single combat against two others in some way. Leaving aside the smaller tactical considerations, Team RWBY had the superior strategy at the scale of engagement as well as the established match-ups once the fight entered its first equilibrium. It may have been completely happenstance that way, but that's how I'd best describe what happened here beyond a broadbrushing statement like: "Team RWBY was better than the Ace Ops".

      Another detail to consider, team RWBY are close friends who have been together for a long time, and they can read eachother like books, whereas the Ace Ops, as Harriet said, aren't friends, just comrades, and don't have the same connection team RWBY has. And also as Ruby said, they did train and fight with the Ace Ops, increasing their already high skill level to match, and even surpass the Ops

    • @Sapheiorus
      @Sapheiorus 5 лет назад +1

      @@8cutstrings You are right, that is a social and skill element to the fight I omitted for the sake of my focus, but it's definitely a significant part of how the actual tactics worked out. The skill aspect is an underlying reason Team RWBY could manage to capitalize on the tactical advantages they had at all. Without training, even with the same courses of action they took in the fight, Team RWBY would have failed on grounds of pure merit.
      The strongest bonds show us how we need each other AND how we DON'T. Without their bonds, Blake and Yang in particular would not have pulled off their first elimination in silent coordination; they could read each other's needs in the heat of the moment and improvise fluidly. Ruby may have focused too hard on "sticking together" were she still too socially insecure with the team to the point where she could think they'd consider her abandoning them or if she lacked a mindful trust in her teammates' ability to handle themselves in her absence the moment she tried to run off. The teams even strategically divided the way they did because of those bonds existing.

      @@Sapheiorus Can I just mention that Harriet wasn't so much going after Ruby because of her speed, but because what she said prior to busting down a presumably armored door, Vines first line was telling Harriet that not everything is a competition, she was triggered at the implication of being second best, she couldn't focus on another person, ally or opponent long enough to actually help for the life of her, and it ended with Weiss blindsiding her, she could've ended any of the other fights in a flash if hadn't turned Ruby's burn into a personal attack(which Ruby might have done on purpose)
      also the main reason the Ace-Ops couldn't get their act together was 1)Clover wasn't there to organize them("What would you do without Me") and 2) none of them seemed to agree on how Team RWBY should actually be punished from Vine's emphasis on capture, all the way to Elm's implied mental preparation to KILL them, they were in turn technically working towards up to 4 different goals capture, kill, defeat(Harriet trying to prove she's the best), and in Marrow's case negotiate (true to his fable he's trying to have his cake and eat it too)

  • @splintercell320
    @splintercell320 5 лет назад +44

    So I did my best to try and count how many times each person was hit and ideally how much damage they took:
    Ruby - 5(4 little hits , 1 moderate hit)
    Weiss - 0 hits
    Blake - 3(2 really big hits, 1 small hit)
    Yang - 4(2 big hits, 2 small hits)
    Harriet - 2(1 big hit, 1 small hit)
    Marrow - 2(1 small hit, 1 big hit)
    Elm - 6(3 small hits, 3 big hits)
    Vine - 2 really big hits
    From this I think Ruby and Blake’s Auras were critically low(Blake’s did flicker, not break). Yang’s was low, but she’s special as her semblance gets stronger the more damage she takes. Weiss with the flawless victory. Harriet used her semblance excessively and wore herself out. Marrow’s semblance must tire himself out the more he uses it and/or if he uses it on a big target. Vine didn’t get hit much, but that last hit was brutal and he did use his semblance a lot. Elm is a powerhouse, she took the most hits.

    • @lenlimbo
      @lenlimbo 4 года назад +4

      I'm not sure about Ruby's Aura. She wasn't even breathing hard at the end of her fight. I think she minimized most of the hits, and her careful use of her Semblance meant she didn't burn too much Aura on that.
      If it wasn't for Blake's flicker, I wouldn't be surprised if Weiss's aura was the lowest of the team. Her whole fighting style heavily depends on her summons and sigils, so she must have burned a lot, even without taking hits.
      Yang's new defensive style coupled with her superior physical prowess means that if she play smart, she doesn't receive too much damage even if she takes the most hits, because she blocks a lot of them. Even with the use of her Semblance, I think she may be the one with the most Aura at the end of the fight.
      And yeah, Blake was probably the one who took the most damage to her Aura. The flicker tells a lot about how low she must be at that point.

      Woop! Sh*t Well Weiss won against Marrow, who was holding back and just trying to arrest Weiss, not kill her, unlike everyone else she’s ever faced (human or Faunus). Ruby was facing Hare (hope I’m spelling that right) who was willing to kill Ruby. Hare wasn’t hesitant, wasn’t holding back, and Ruby was still winning, and just because she’s the youngest member of team RWBY doesn’t just automatically make her the weakest.

    Two things I love about this fight: The first is that not only did Weiss win a fight on her own, she showed that she could very likely be the most potent combatant in team RWBY, in a general sense. The second thing I love is that you see training vs experience. I'd have to disagree with people that say the Ace Ops have more experience than RWBY; training, certainly, but the Ace Ops haven't been fighting for their lives almost every day for the past couple years. As another commenter said, RWBY does it "Together".

    • @Hazoraid
      @Hazoraid 5 лет назад +21

      Fighting for their lives? You don't become a top special operations team out of thin air. It's a safe assumption that they had to put their lives on the line on more than one occasion. Team RWBY have been fighting as huntresses/huntresses-in-training for like 2~ years. ACEOPS should have more than 5 years under their belt. In terms of experience against other aura users, Team RWBY should have had that disadvantage. ACEOPS should have way more experience in that category as well. A good example of amateur vs. pro skill is in My Hero Academia, look at the 1st years vs 3rd? years. You can see the leap solely off of experience. Should have mirrored that.

    • @zerocreed8031
      @zerocreed8031 5 лет назад +19

      @@Hazoraid the ace ops were also very easy to anger, that was their downfall. Elm and harriet were impulsive, while vein and marrow weren't trying to kill them. There's alot going on in this fight, it's not all directly explained, alot is implied and shown. The ace ops also always had luck on their side because of clover, who wasn't there this time.

    • @Hazoraid
      @Hazoraid 5 лет назад +7

      @@zerocreed8031 To that I'd say their emotions and personalities weren't properly introduced to us. Every scene of them before showed us how collected they were, wound tight and following orders like soldiers. When they introduced Winter for the first time, after like a minute of dialogue we had a clear vision of what her personality was; calm and collected at times, but carried herself too pridefully (an air of superiority). When ACEOPS were introduced they didn't show much of that, a little (a very tiny bit) of how Team RWBY was at Beacon. The ACEOPS fight mirrored the Winter v Qrow fight in terms of personalities clashing, except the anger wasn't warranted. There wasn't much trash talk, nor was there much taunting. The anger simply arises because the plot needed it.

    • @zerocreed8031

      @@Hazoraid it's their own arrogance. Clover is obviously the strategist and most level headed. This showed us how they act on their own, the fight tells a story but it's hinted. Clover was obviously the glue that held the team together.

      @Hazoraid 5 лет назад +4

      @@zerocreed8031 Yeah but why are they surprising us with it at the end of the volume. The In-fighting came totally out of the left field. Might as well have been tripped up with an anime style face plant after she said it. Ruby I always knew your savagery would come out. The fact that she and Team RWBY pretty much stood combat ready and unafraid of the fight even after Salem sent an image of herself saying she was coming there was pretty much the line being drawn in the sand moment that separated the badass beast that were willing to fight and protect from the cowering pussies running to save themselves and a few.
