Why Ships Are Red Below the Waterline

  • When’s the last time you looked at a ship? Picture a cruise ship or container ship in the harbor. Did you happen to notice that the bottom of the hull is always painted red? It’s not like you can see that snazzy paint job under the waterline, so what gives?
In early times, ships were mostly made of wood. That's why sailors had to cover their hulls (the part that’s sitting in the water) with copper paint to protect the vessel from wood-eating worms, barnacles, and seaweed. It was the copper that added a red tint to the paint. But what about now?

    SUMMARY:
    - Nowadays, you can add special ship-protecting ingredients to any kind or color of paint. But the hulls are still painted red to honor and maintain the old nautical tradition!
    - You also might’ve noticed numbers painted vertically on the side of the hull, usually toward the bow. The red background helps those stand out more.
    - It doesn't matter how well you protect the hull of your ship with special paint - it’ll never help you completely avoid the harmful growth of barnacles and whatnot.
    - You might not realize it, but almost 95% of all the world's cargo is transported by ship.
    - Right at this moment, at least 20 million containers are moving across the world.
    - Within one year, the average container ship travels the same distance as going three-quarters of the way to the moon and back.
    - The largest cargo ship can carry 18,000 containers with a whopping 745 million bananas inside!
    - Maersk has been the biggest container ship operator in the world since 1996. If you stack up just their containers alone, it would equal 7,530 Eiffel Towers.
    - One-third of all ship crews in the world don't have any kind of communication with the outside world when they're out at open sea.
    - Cruise ships often perform rescue operations. So, don't be surprised if the one you're traveling on stops to save a few fishers in desperate need of help.
    - Cruise ship cabins are built separately from the ship because, otherwise, there wouldn't be enough space for their construction.
    - Cruise ship cabin walls are made of metal, and the main reason is fire safety.
    - During a one-week cruise, a large ship uses 1,800 pounds of coffee, 9,000 pounds of lettuce, 45,000 eggs, and 20,000 ice cream cones!
    - Although there are doctors and nurses on cruise ships, if you have a dental emergency, no-one will be able to help you out.
    - Cruise ships consume a lot of fuel. For example, a large vessel needs about 121,000 gallons of fuel for every day it spends at sea.
    - The largest cruise ships have more than 2,000 crew members. On top of that, such vessels are incredibly expensive to build: they may cost more than $1 billion.

About 15 years ago, my father had a medical emergency, while sailing from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas (U.S.V.I.). Before the U.S. Coast Guard could mount an effort & send aid, a massive Korean cargo ship bound for Africa intercepted the distress call & changed course over 100 miles to help. They were able to get him on board until a U.S. Coast Guard chopper arrived & transported him back to Florida & a hospital, where his life was saved just in time. Hats off to the cargo guys! There are good people out there & it's amazing how much sailors(wind or fuel operated) have each other's back. Thank you!

Copper paint? No, copper plating. Made it close to impossible for "worms" (really a clam) to get into the wood behind the plates. Growth was still possible and common as the copper was not that toxic. Thus it was nescessary to scrape the bottom of the hull. The ship was beached and pulled over, or handled in a dry dock or with "camels" (floats). The copper was greenish (as it got coated with copper-carbonate etc.). The paint later developed contained tin (stannum) which apart from being "not toxic" really can become toxic, a true gender changer for fish.
Copper nails were used to preserve wood in harbours, bulwarks and duc d'albe's.

Fact: Yes, the ship hulls were copper paint based and gave it that historic red tint. However... That color limitation is not something that is followed all the time or even commonly in some cases anymore. A great example is the Costa Concordia that sank in 2012. It was pure white all the way down the side and down the hull. (Edit: There was a red hull deep below the waterline.)There are also some blue hulled ships too. In fact, the Carnival Fleet seems to primarily be pure white hulls or blue hulls nowadays.
Tankers on the other hand... Those still tend to be red, but brown is another color that pops up. (Sometimes due to the red fading, of course, but pure brown all the way down does happen.) I've also come across blue and gray hulls. (Not much real life experience sadly but lots of videos/research/etc.)
What's more, the draft markings aren't just red and white. Instead, it just requires contrasting colors/highly visible. (Red/White is an obvious one.) Blue/White is another.

Red has not always been the color, worked several years at Detyens ship yard in Charleston SC, I've painted bottoms of Navy ships, cargo ships and they all weren't red, some were black. Employed at this location from 1999 to 2015.

It’s also sometimes painted red on the first few layers and then a different colour for the top layers such as blue because the paint slowly sloughs off over time so when you see the red paint you know you have to get it repainted soon

    • @benjaminparent4115
      @benjaminparent4115 2 года назад

It actually depend from the paint. They are 2 type of paint soft which as you said slowly sloughs off over time, and therefore leave paint particle in the water. And hard which doesn't. do note thought that while hard paint doesn't release paint in the water it still release biocide.

The largest container vessels is the MSC Isabella and can contain 23646 TEU ( meaning 23646 x 20ft containers). This is the cargo capacity used to describe the capacity of container ships . It is based on the volume of a 20-foot-long (6.1 m). This vessel has also entered the port of Antwerp last week. This is a vessel from MSC not Maerk :)

The SS Eastland capsized in dock in July of 1915 on the Chicago river. Partly because of safety equipment, partly because the overfilled vessel passengers all rushed on side of the top deck, and partly because its ballast tanks weren’t filled. ~820 people from the western electric company drowned that morning in what would be known as the Eastland disaster. Google it, twas quite tragic and hardly anyone has ever heard of it.

My wife and I have gone on a few cruise lines and I haven't felt nausea from the swaying of the ships, but my wife has. For those that get a little nausea from the sway of the ships, try and get a cabin that has a balcony, or at least a window that could open up. At night when my wife got the nausea feeling, we opened the door slightly to the balcony to allow the outside air to come into our cabin. This allowed her stomach to settle and sleep without any troubles.

Hi, I enjoyed the clear images and information but I do feel that you missed a few key points about this paint. Like all the environment impacts theses paints have on nature. I understand that shipping is a key element to our economic system but educational videos such as they should paint (Pun intended) a clear picture of both the good and the bad of any topic no matter the controversy around it. Thank you for your hard work in trying to keeping us educated.

    (Get your facts straight!)
Your information about the S.S. Eastland is totally faults! My great uncle was on that ship when it capsized in the Chicago River in 1915 not from sailing on the Lake Michigan. The Eastlast being a tall steamship was docked in the Chicago River, one of many rented by Western Electric Co. to take their employees to the Warren Dunes in Michigan City, Indiana for the Company picnic.
The reason for the capsized was that there was some commotion going on in the river opposite of the side they are boarding ship on and everybody on board rush to the far side of the ship and being tall with a short beam, the weight all on one side of the ship caused it to capsized!
My uncle hung from the handrailing as many people above him stepped on his hands to keep from falling into the river as the boat capsized.
