The Only Way to Survive a Sinking Ship

  • Let's say, you're setting off on a long-awaited cruise; you're on cloud nine, and nothing could be further from your mind than paying attention to the safety precautions. But however unwilling you might be to waste precious vacation time on listening to safety instructions, you should remember that chances are, it could save your life.
Yes, the odds of being trapped on a sinking ship nowadays are quite low. But there are things you can do to survive if the near-impossible does happen. Hopefully, it’ll never happen to you, but just in case, it's vitally important to know how to react.
    SUMMARY:
Take part in the first-day safety drill 0:51
What you should do first 1:44
    Follow the crew's directions 2:42
How you can help others 3:21
Try to get to a lifeboat as quickly as possible 3:58
What if you have to jump off the ship 5:50
    🚤 Why ships sink 🚤 7:39
    #survivaltips #ships #brightside
    SUMMARY:
Try to remember where the lifeboat closest to your cabin is, and figure out how to get there if it's dark or the weather is stormy. Also, read the instructions for how to put on and use your floatation device.
Try to stay calm - you have no time for panic. If you're in your cabin, immediately put on your floatation device and take anything else that may help you later.
The next step, which might become a life-altering one, is to get to safety. And to do that, you need to follow the crew's directions.
Regrettably, studies claim that only 35% of people manage to stay calm in a critical situation. If you're one of those lucky ones, help other passengers to get their bearings.
If you see a person standing still in the middle of the turmoil, yell at them - it's an effective way to bring them back to reality.
After that, concentrate on your top-priority task, which is to get to a lifeboat as quickly as possible.
But let's say you look around and see no available lifeboats whatsoever and start to panic! What then? In that case, try to find some floatation device, like a life preserver ring, and throw it into the water.
If there's no time left, and you realize you'll have to jump off the ship, always check where you'll land first. Otherwise, you may be hit by some wreckage, a boat, or other people, and end up underwater.
The cold shock may pull you underwater even faster than hypothermia sets in. That's why it's vitally important to collect yourself.
Surprisingly, every ship sinks in a different way, depending on its center of gravity and size, the shape of its hull, and, of course, the cause of the accident.

If you get into a lifeboat, as soon as your boat is in the water, drive it or row it as far away from the sinking ship as possible.
If you are swimming in the water this is also important. Swim as far away as you can.
The reason is that large ships create a whirlpool, and if you are too close the whirlpool will drag you down. This is true even if you are wearing a lifevest.
Trust what I am saying because when I was younger, I spent 18 months of my life stationed on a Destroyer in the US Navy.
I have sailed across the Pacific Ocean twice.

I cannot stress this enough, ALWAYS GET AWAY FROM THE SHIP! People can underestimate the suction. I remember hearing about an old shipwreck where a large amount of the passengers died because they didn’t get away from the ship in time.

Hey there Bright Side! I work on ships, and another great life saving tip is to bring a flashlight, as well as a water bottle if you have time. Remember, if the lights go out, and if you don’t have a flash light, feel the wall, and go up, look for eliminated or glow in the dark exit signs/ arrows usually located near the ceiling as well as the floor. Wear bright clothes if possible and also try to put on clothed toed shoes. 🤙🏽👌🏽🐋🦈🌍

Many of the people that survived M/S Estonia survived half submerged in 9°C (49°F) for six hours with hardly any clothes at all. What saved them was that they had to constantly struggle to stay as high as possible on an upside down lifeboat or upside down raft, their muscles producing heat and helping them survive hours longer than should be possible in such conditions.

On a cruise ship, you don't put on extra clothes, grab your valuables and luggage and rush for the nearest life boat, you grab ONLY your life jacket and report to your mustering station (or if you're not near your cabin, you just report to the mustering station where they will give you a life jacket) and then follow the crew's directions for quick and orderly evacuation. That's why you have the safety drill! Lifeboats don't have space for luggage and non-essentials.

The Estonia wasn't a "small" ship buy any means. It's ridiculous how you correlate the size with the cause of the sinking. She was a massive ship, built for thousands of passengers and hundreds of cars. What failed was not a simple "door" but the front gate of the car deck. I traveled on the Estonia about two months before she sank.

TO SHOW THE POWER OF FLEX TAPE, I SAWED A HOLE IN THIS SHIP.

  • @feildofdreams1336

Never put on your life jacket inside... most ships (at least mine does) have green arrows or some form of exit strategy in the ladderwells (stairs). No food or water before 24 hours unless sick or injured. Don’t put on waterproof items just regular cloths to keep warm... more the better for long periods of survival. Always report something that is damaged... weird sounds better for a crew member to check it out then to leave it unnoticed. Once you are off the ship stay in the general area of the ships last location bigger and brighter objects are better seen. The list goes on...

    • @Name-lt2tz
      @Name-lt2tz 2 года назад +2

yea yea, I also thouth - why he recoomends put life jacked inside ship. Yea on the other hand while you have jacket in hand, somebody else can steal it from you. If you wear the jacked , stealing becomes harder. But if ignoring stealing , then if there is full of water inside ship, it might move you up and make it harder to go throug doors. I heard that in planes - to use jacked not inside plane

The 'muster' drill is where you learn to find and gather near your designated life boat. Also, crew members demonstrate how to put on the life vest. This 'muster' drill is mandatory, and failing to attend and refusing to participate can get you put off the ship right then and there.

  • @MÆS0NS4G4

If you don't make it to a lifeboat, make sure to stay calm.
Avoid jumping if you can, and stay with the ship till the very end.
If your ship is one of those carnival ships for the Bahamas, you're lucky.

It doesn't matter if you are "willing" to listen to the safety precautions or not. The muster drill is required by maritime law and generally only lasts up to an hour. One hour ot of a week or more long cruise to hear information that could potentially save your life isn't really too much to ask.

I think ships should swim in pairs at least near each other, so in case smth bad happens, people could quickly use another ship and so it would be almost impossible to have problems, unless for some reason you are not able to get out of ship

Pay attention during the muster drill. Always make sure you know how to get to an outside deck. Consider carrying around a small flashlight in case the power goes out and emergency lights don't kick on for some reason. If you take prescription meds, have them in a go bag you can grab quickly. Expect to take the stairs, not the elevators.
