    Yes, you shouldn't swap seats without asking cabin crew. But it does not mean the aircraft will have balance issues, a long as you move forward and back and stay in the same side of the aircraft, pilots won't have a problem correcting the balance by trimming the aircraft. (Trim is basically what elevator attitude the plane has, if it is trimmed positively the plane will have an easier time taking off, so if the weight changes in the cabin all that pilots will do is from the aircraft.)

    The FAA accounts for 180 lbs per seat and it is calculated into the weight and balance of the aircraft. That’s why they don’t weigh passengers. Moving seats in an airliner will NOT cause an imbalance great enough to cause any issue. If your in a small plane 4 to 6 seats it is more critical.

    I'm an aerospace engineer, and trust me that doesn't matter at all, because there are autopilots that accomodate such changes in aerodynamic centre. Feel free to change seats and move around. It won't be a very big problem until and unless all passengers start running around edges of the aircraft. It will be sudden and confuse the autopilot🚀✨

      They can calculate it by the information they have. They know which gender, how tall you are, where you come from and what your age is. For everything they could have some standardized weights and can know how the weight will be distributed in the plane but with some calculated variations of course

    I always fly Southwest - no assigned seats so you can sit where you want depending on your boarding order. When the flights aren't very full the Flight Attendants tell everyone to spread out, but never tell anyone exactly where to sit or they need to move because they are throwing the plane out of balance - giving this as a reason not to change seats is BS!

    • @billm47645
      @billm47645 5 лет назад +17

      Shawn Peatrowsky They do this for weight and balance, but on larger aircraft this is not that critical. Meaning a few people in a less than optimum configuration on a Southwest 737 will not throw off the whole aircraft. That’s why they don’t ask for your weight when booking a flight. However, I once flew in a helicopter where the pilot made us sit in a certain order.

    • @cool2180
      @cool2180 5 лет назад +3

      I like these videos types informative but this particular video is exaggerated little about switching seats. On planes that are larger than a commuter plane it is less of an issue and the load planners typically not loading the plane near it limits so allows some weight to be off in certain parts of the plane

    • @ltgemini1599

    • @shawnpeat
      @shawnpeat 5 лет назад +3

      I am a professional engineer and understand things luke weight and force. I agree that equal weight distribution is more important the smaller the aircraft is. And if a plane is only like half full people need to spread out to distribute the weight. But this video presented as if a couple of people switching seats on nearly full large commercial airplane could throw ut out of balance and make it hard to fly. That was what I was calling BS on. I agree with you William if weight distribution was that critical on a large commercial plane they would ask you for your weight when you bought your ticket.

    • @rytisg
      @rytisg 5 лет назад +2

      That's right. And on Southwest, if you fly a longer distance with one or two stops, people get off and there's do determining where the remaining people are sitting as the flight continues to its next destination. Likewise the flight attendants always tell you after you land at an intermediate stop that you can change your seat location after they do a headcount. Sometimes they will ask a few people to move to the back, but that's about it.

    Seat changes are usually only risky if you move more than several rows, and depends a lot on how heavy the aircraft is. On a small aircraft like a 15 seat seaplane, you'll often be asked to change seats to get a better balance. On larger aircraft with a high payload, an individual seat change is rarely enough to tip the balance off (partly because everything is planned to keep the CoG around the center so there's more room for inaccuracies.)
    Also, the whole thing is more important during take off and landing than at other points. Flight attendants will often let you change freely after take off if you want.

    you can swap seats in an aircraft if it is a widebody if it is a commuter jet then you must remain in your seats for weight and balance purposes, the pilots only do their own weight and balance in small commuter jets the big aircrafts are usually done by a load planner at the airlines dispatch center.

    Hey Y'all, Aerospace Engineer here. While it is true that moving around in a plane cabin shifts its CG, passenger planes are designed to accommodate for a large variety of seating arrangements. Where the primary concern is is with passengers moving to the fore or aft of the plane since this can cause a much larger shift in CG than moving left or right. In most scenarios where it is "first come first serve" seating in an aircraft, you don't need to worry about where you sit. 😉

    Oh dear, definitely calling bs on that one. It's not logical unless they weigh every single passenger, or demand to know your weight when booking! And what about the flights where you can choose your own seat while booking? Yeah, this isn't logical. They like you to be in your assigned seat during takeoff and landing so that it's easier to identify the bodies if there is an accident. The bit about accidents being more likely to happen on takeoff and landing is true.
