  • This is one flight that had been on my hit list for a long time and finally I was able to make it work and secure a seat on it, the British Airways all-Business Class Airbus A318 service from London City to New York.
    Tried to capture as much of the experience as possible so hopefully the video is enjoyable for you. This flight was also rather empty with just 12 passengers on board including myself which certainly enhanced the 'exclusivity' factor greatly.

But as soon as I heard this little guy had the ETOPS rating to fly transatlantic, I just had to see! Thanks for uploading, I now know what my next flight to Europe will be!

    To this day, i'm still staggered an A318 can make it from LCY-JFK direct..... it just amazes me such a tiny jet can go so far, yet the bigger brothers can't.
    I believe the A319/A320 can make it TATL but with severely limited PAX, so much so the route would not be feasible on that plane.

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 7 лет назад +1

      Disregard, via SNN... I did wonder how it was possible to go so far without making a fuel stop.

    • @CaptainDoony
      @CaptainDoony  7 лет назад +9

      thefiestaguy Well the return leg is JFK-LCY direct but as you said with only a maximum of 32 pax, it is a low payload.
      That said the NEO/MAX will become commonplace on East Coast-Europe flights in the near future able to operate with a decent load

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 7 лет назад

      So basically, on any small jet, the only way they can make it profitable is if it's business passengers only? or First...... small pax so need a high turnover, therefore make it an all business class flight.

    the reason why this flight stops at SNN is simply to refuel. The runway at LCY is too short for an A318 to take off with a full load of fuel

    • @marcbrady7241

    • @t-banggaming8414
      @t-banggaming8414 6 лет назад

      Dude I am a real world pilot and as far as I know A318 cannot fly to JFK without refueling. It is using the same concept as of a charter plane it also needs to stop at a lot of airports just so that it can refuel. And as far as you are concerned that the runway at LCY is too short for takeoff with full fuel then we takeoff with a flaps 2 config for lower speeds required for takeoff.

    • @piotrkuler2474
      @piotrkuler2474 5 лет назад

      They only use it with 32 seats, so the range will be substantially increased but the first time I heard it I thought the same thing "wait a minute, hows that even possible" was my first thought.
      As fun as it would be flying the a318 to JFK I would rather be on a 747 or any of BAs other aircraft they use from London Heathrow to JFK instead of this since the a318 isn't as fast as the 747, when you fly for so long the difference between mach 0,76 (which is a normal cruising speed for the a318) and mach 0.85 which is the speed a 747 travels at becomes more noticeable.

      Think of this from a business perspective: 1. LCY is right beside London's Docklands where alot of the finance and big business in the UK is based, so getting to the flight is only a short ride in a car/taxi or the DLR so no time is wasted there
      2. Ireland has US preclearence reducing the time at JFK
      3. When at JFK, no faffing about with security. A courtesy car/taxi can drive you to Wall Street and the Downtown Manhattan area otherwise the Subway can take you there as well. BA have this flight to make it a whole lot easier for big business clientel to get where they need to be. It also means if you want to travel business class LHR-JFK you have a better chance of a seat, even though it will be slim.

    Due to A318's steep approach compatibility it can fly longhaul. The distance from Shannon to JFK is 4,954 km whereas the A318's maximum range to fly non stop is 5,700km (3,600 miles) plus with less seats onboard makes this flight possible.

    The new partly carbon fiber Bombardier C-Series CS100 will be flying this route as a Business Class only route. It has the super quiet Pratt GTF, Geared Turbo Fan engine which cuts noise by between 60 and 75 percent over same power jets The increase in fuel mileage is 21 percent so the plane surprised everyone and it became a Trans Atlantic jet because of the great performance.

    I was surprised to see BA using an A318 on a London to New York route, although making the entire aircraft Business Class was a nice & interesting touch & option. Still, crossing the pond on an aircraft that's barely 100ft long is something u don't see everyday. Even stopping in Ireland before the Atlantic crossing, I'm sure it stretched the A318's 3,100mi range. Also, that was one of the shortest (& necessary I'm sure flying outta LCY) takeoff roles I ever seen. Most takeoff roles last between 30-45sec. I had to watch it twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things, as that takeoff role was a mere 20sec on the dot...gotta hand it to Airbus, those CFM engines really get up & go.

    BA's senior management has cut-back on the expenses to the point where it has become noticeable for those travelling in business-class. I pity the economy travellers, where the meal service has been reduced further.

    12 passengers! Even at full business class prices, I doubt this flight broke even. If it did, the ticket cost must have been high.

      BA Club world tickets from LCY easily tops 6k.

    • @DougHanchard
      @DougHanchard 7 лет назад

      Well. 6,000 US gallons of fuel minimum each way. More via Shannon refueling because of climb fuel burn on the leg out best of LCY short runway. But let's be generous.
      Jet fuel is $2.75 USD per gallon, roughly $33,000 in fuel alone (round trip).
      Landing fees, general maintenance (not including Heavy C-Check inspection), crew, divided by 12 passengers probably cost around, $25,000 per flight, 50K total.
      The aircraft is worth $55 M USD. Capital cost per flight (lease or internal financed) not including interest, works out to 1,600 total flights (12 hrs per flight x 2), over 20,000 hr TTAF before being sold used or recycled for parts is $34,375.00 USD (Round trip).
      Estimated C-Check cost: $10M USD ($13,000 USD per RT)
      Total round trip costs: $130,375.00 USD
      Total revenue: $144,000 USD, assuming $6,000 is charged EACH way.
      And we haven't added cost of capital, interests, corporate services (reservation system, management/ SG&A) let alone profit.
      This flight took a bath in red ink before it left the ground. Probably explains why only one flight (each way) now only operates instead of twice daily.

    Fantastic upload, as per - thank you... Given the Shannon stop (which I don't quite get!), would you recommend onto others or is a direct Heathrow approach the way to go? Thinking of chartering for my 40th next year!

    • @CaptainDoony
      @CaptainDoony  8 лет назад

      Thanks! The A318 service without a doubt feels more exclusive and calmer than any equivalent LHR service. It's rarely rammed full so crew attentiveness should be better than LHR also. As to whether it saves time I would say no personally - Pre Clearance is good on arrival at JFK but it still took around 20 minutes of queuing before you have to go through a security checkpoint of sorts (shoes off, bags, electronics scanned etc) and immigration at Shannon.

    Captain Doony. The plane fuels in Shannon to fly to Nyc JFK & then later that evening it flies back from Nyc to London City Airport. They can't refuel @ London City Airport. That's why it stops @ Shannon. I fly often between London Heathrow & Nyc Jfk. I prefer the direct flight from London Heathrow to Nyc Jfk on a 747 or a 777.

    • @alexrussell3078
      @alexrussell3078 8 лет назад +1

      They do refuel at London City, but not much because if they put enough fuel to go straight to New York its to heavy and the plane can't take off on the tiny runway

      FlightFilms It would be the same as they still have to stop in Shannon for fuel as London city runway is too short for a full tank.

      The A318 doesn't fly any lower than the B744/B777 that plague the LHR-JFK route. We were at FL370 & FL390 on this flight.

    Amazing route, if you are an aviation enthusiast. Also it is nice concept to have a whole plane yours in business class, kinda like a private business jet. BUT, is that route even profitable at all? If I was a business class passenger why should I take this route, make a stop on SNN and not simply take the enormous 747 on business class from Heathrow and fly direct? Just wondering, i am sure there must be a reason for this flight.

  • @Shadowfax-1980
    @Shadowfax-1980 7 лет назад

    Could they fly to Laguardia? The plane is small enough and by going through preclearance means the lack of customs wouldn't be a problem. The benefit is that you're closer to Manhattan.

    • @CaptainDoony

      Matt Andaloro Performance wise it would be no problem. The LGA perimeter rule would be the biggest hurdle I would have though.
