  • The foot needs to change shape as we walk and squat, since squatting is just an expression of different moments of our walking cycle (in fact, all movement in our human body is a reflection of how efficiently we walk).
The “tripod foot” has been a hot topic in recent years. What this essentially means is having 3 points of contact on the ground: heel, big toe knuckle, pinky toe knuckle. This has been misconstrued by many fitness and rehab professionals over the years, to the point where now most folks preach maintaining a rigid, tripod foot as you squat as a means to create more “stability.” Unfortunately, this is completely backwards from the normal biomechanics that need to take place in order to make squatting a natural, fluid motion.
It’s important to maintain contact points of your foot on the ground. It’s not, however, important to keep the foot stiff and rigid; doing so will actually create more issues over time.
