Bob Marley said that when the music hits you feel no pain. Man, when the knowledge hits you feel liberated. The most perfect definition of history I ever heard I heard from Dr. Carr. History = usable past.
A friend hit me up about watch night on Thursday and I was able to hit him back about Freedom Eve, because of #InClassWithCarr

Michael Harriot and I must be the same age. I remember my mom trying Kwanzaa in the 1980s, but she could never keep up with it and it fell to the side. I do remember her giving me a Huggie Bean doll (the Black answer to Cabbage Patch Kids dolls). The virtues of the holiday, in my view, need to incorporated into daily life.

This history of Kwanzaa is great. When my mother was a student, she took me to a Kwanzaa celebration at her college. I shared this celebration with Kwame Ture. He was the featured speaker at that time. It was the late 90s at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA.

I am watching from Poland. I am back, after a short period of absence. First, I want to declare, again, that I love this platform and everything you are doing here. Secondly, I need to mention that I was truly offended after I was apparently blocked from either making comments OR making a donation- a few weeks back. I don't know what that was all about, yet I am ready and willing to continue this journey together with you. It is my ultimate desire to be able to, eventually contribute to these efforts to achieve certain goals in some significant way: Peace, Love, Unity, Education, Freedom and Empowerment. Thank you, once again !!!

Our moderators can sometimes be overzealous in ensuring our space is free from trolls. I'm sorry you got blocked. And no need to be offended because they don't know you or your intent. We have created family here and may not always get it right but our intentions are to make this a learning space free from negativity and distractions. Glad you're sticking around. Blessings.

It was an educational & prevention program for adolescents We provided an array of services with supporting the child& family .Summer attractions included jobs & a trip, visiting HBCUs & other significant places . Dr Carr, on our D C visit we spent time at Howard. For graduation there was a Rites of Passage Retreat highlighting the Nguzo Principles. Bummed I missed this live 😞 I struggle with the narrative “we built this country so it’s ours” and this topic would’ve been the perfect time to ask the question I’ve had on my heart for the past few months, do we belong here? When what our ancestors built wasn’t don’t with pride but out of fear, it wasn’t something they wanted to do but had to do. I don’t know again lately I’ve been struggling with this narrative.

My question was about Karenga. For a long time, it was said he was responsible for the death of Bobby Sutton of the Black Panther Party when various groups were fighting over who would head the new Black Studies program at one of the California colleges. J. Edgar Hoover paid for his doctorate studies, all kinds of stuff. What really happened?
    -----
It was answered not long after I asked. Dr. Carr said, "'read it, understand it, and then put all of that aside." That's where I was headed, so thank you.
    -----
And now, at the end of 3 hours plus - I'm overwhelmed. God bless you both for sharing your abundant knowledge. I look forward to what 2021 will bring in your classes! Thank you, Doctors Hunter & Carr. Have a restful Kwanzaa season.

I am from Darlington, SC. I am currently exploring the history there. My grandmother had a white mother and a Black father, and when I look at the census reports the communities in the early 1900’s were interracial. When my grandmother’s parents died, the story goes, that a white uncle took her parent’s property from her because he said they owed him some money. Needless to say, there wasn’t anything she could do about it.

About Brazil, in 1988 I spent 30 days in Bahia. I recall seeing Fannie Lou Hamer’s face on fabric when we visit the cultural centers. Of course, born in the People’s Republic of Brooklyn, I was surprised. I had to acknowledge never seeing the faces of our great warriors captured on fabrics - from Asantewaa Harris.
I was taught by Kimako Baraka who taught us the Nguzo Saba. We said the principles daily & I took that with me when I taught 1st grade.
