- Tool Fans.....FEELIN' YOU!!! Tonight we're coming back to Tool, with the full studio recording of a song entitled "Pneuma". FULL DISCLOSURE: I know I've done a reaction to this song before, kind of anyways. That was a reaction to the Drum Cam of Danny Carey's drum performance, and I honestly wasn't really paying attention to the song, I was totally focused on what Danny Carey was doing. This time, it's all about the song, and only the song. How's this one gonna go? Only one way to find out...
Come on in, enjoy the show...I'll see you inside.
Scoring System Guide
5 Stars - Amazing, Fantastic, Impressive, Perfect (if you believe in perfection).
4 Stars - Great, Very Good.
3 Stars - Pretty Good, O.k., Meh, Indifferent.
2 Stars - Pretty Bad, Bad, Really Bad
1 Star - Horrible, Awful, Terrible.
0 Stars - ??? (Hopefully we'll never have to find out)

Pneuma = spirit. Maynard likens this to a breath. "Born of one breath, one word" I feel like it is a fitting ending because it's the way a breath ends, fading away
It's not hard when you get a real repair.b99k.
I always feel it as 5/8+9/8+5/8+9/8+5/8, broken down as |2+3|3+3+3|2+3|3+3+3|2+3|, then repeat. Every line is symmetrical this way, with a 5/8 measure in the beginning, middle and end of each line, with 9/8s between them. Then the one line that is different would be 8/8+9/8+8/8 (|2+3+3|3+3+3|2+3+3|). Also symmetrical.
I always feel it as music and an escape from doing math, while you're over here doing math 😂
@@deminybs The math is there whether you do it or not🙂
Exactly
For me it's most intuitively broken down by alternating measures of 5/8 and 6/8. I figured it out on my 5th or 6th time of casual listening (don't ask me how xD).
5 + 6 = 11, then 11×3 is exactly 33, and the song actually turned out to be something like 33/8 or 33/16 if I recall correctly. Maybe that helps someone 👀
@@Crite_Mike That sort of works too, but if you do 5+9+5+9+5, another beautiful thing is that the vocals always line up with the 5/8 measure.
Thank you for this Supervised Chaos!!
Nice review on an awesome Tool song. Can't wait for your Muse reaction & review later! 😎
I wish you and Mrs. Heretic would do Tool together, You doing the music and her, the lyrics. The words really are a huge part of their repertoire.
Great review as usual sir!
Love your Tool reactions!! Can't wait to see the next one!
More Tool, excellent! Thank you, dear sir! Always great to see you dissect them.
Hard to ignore Danny since this song is really a showcase for him, I've always thought of the main 4/4 riff as the chorus where Danny gets to "sing." Then there's his amazing solo. Of course it doesn't keep the other band members from doing cool stuff too!
Yes more Tool!!! Happy New Years David!!!
21:58 if you listen to dannys bass drum its in 4/4 withe bass here and its awesome how it actually recontexturalizes the bass rhythm
Love this album/song! Tool is in my top 5 bands for 20+ years!
The Octopus at his best! 💯✌️
Yeah 👏🏻 been waiting long time this 🙌🏻
When experienced as part of the whole album, the fade out works
Always love a good ol Tool react from my favourite reactor Dave Heretic
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 6/8 8/8 …. Is exactly how I count this (except for counting 7/8 instead of 2/8 + 5/8). The only passage that keeps throwing me off until this day is the one at 25:19 in your video. 😂
@23:08 or so, Adam does have keys or synth next to him on stage and I believe that's his synth. Tool has a lot of hidden gems. Watch Invincible live sometime and check out what Danny does.
Also, check out Culling Voices live... Yup. Definitely 2 guitarists at first. We all know Adam ..Lemme know who the second one is!!
Yup!!
When they play Culling Voices live, Danny comes out and plays acoustic guitar! Then goes back to drums. Yes, Danny Carey also plays guitar!
I loved watching you react to this song! It was such a blast to listen to this song with you as always David!!!
This was my introduction Tool (found them waaaaaay late) and will always love this song for that. Also, it happens to be an awesome track🤘🌀
P.S. I miss the old scoring system
I think it may just be their best song of all time
Pulse Ultra does a great job changing time signatures constantly as well, definitely worth giving them a listen.
Acording to Adam Jones, it's 33/16 :)
Interesting, happy little counting accident breath related. (pneuma ~ spirit ~ breath)
Coincidence?? I think not! 🤭
Seeing them Saturday. Cant wait
Still the very best reaction/analyst channel.
David i salute you
FEELIN' YOU Ghost!!!
The 33/8 pattern is kinda fun to follow even based on the melody. And along with the vocal harmonies, I like the phrasing of the lyrics.
The amazing thing to me is that those fills are written and they are exactly the same on the live show is there on the album. I say that as a non drummer I'm not sure how impressive it is but it's impressive to me.
My favorite counting of how to count Pneuma is from "Giovanni Zaccaria Bass", a strange youtuber. He (and subsequently I) count the main riff of the song as
9/8 5/8 repeat 5/8 repeat whole (9/8 5/8 9/8 5/8 5/8)
Not great with reading music so not sure as to the proper terms for repeats but it feels the easiest to understand and 5/8 stays consistent. Incase no one searches out the video, the 9/8s are broken into 3s and the 5/8s are broken to 3 and 2. The (what I call) turn around at 10:46 in this video is more complicated and I am unsure if Giovanni's is easy or if there is an easier method but I am not gonna break that one down here.
Love the KING DIAMOND T-shirt
Hail!
You can also go get the Drumeo transcription
The problem is that you're trying to figure out tool....its the other way around...tool figures you out
It's a synth
Love this song, would love to know what score you’d have given it in the old scoring system. 9.2/3 ??
I agree with the score.
Adam plays a synthesizer in the live version
If a doobie was a song it would be Pneuma. Relaxes my brain this song. Danny is awesome
Great review and thanks to Chaos for always giving you TOOL. Insights are always great. The buildup and then the anticlimactic 5 stars. Boo. Much rather you gave this a 9. 3 or 9.4 If there was no 10s should there ever by 5 stars? No!! Peace
I usually agree with your takes on the endings of songs, but I disagree with you on this one. IMO the ending isn’t anti-climactic. It is post-climactic. Meaning the song climaxed, then they played the ending which brought the song full circle back to where it started. On my first listen back in 2019 my main takeaway from this song was how much I liked the ending.
Setup
🤟❤
Danny's high-hat is definitely playing 4/4.
Playing a quarter note pulse and being in 4 aren't really the same thing.
Shame he hated it
There's a lot of snobby takes on this song. This isn't the most, but near lowest. Thrashers always miss.
Hot take.
This is that song where they just took the melody from the bridge of schism, another mediocre song, and played it for way too long.
-Signed a fan of earlier tool releases 😂
Mediocre is totally subjective. I think Tools " mediocre" is better than 99% of most bands absolute Best.
Yes. Everyone knows opinions about music are subjective.
@@LeeB-l6yfrom my experience on the Internet it's unfortunately more like 2% of people that know that lol
5 stars??? You need to be musically recalibrated!
5 out of 5. The highest score possible. What else do you want?
@@THEDavidHeretic I somehow thought your scale was 1-10.. sorry
@@stevemiller1047 I was trying a new scoring system for the last couple of months. 1-5 starts. Don't worry, we're going back to the old scale of 1 to 10 starting with March reactions.
