It is so far ahead of the dribble produced here in the United States that there can be no valid comparison. I've watched many of these episodes. Alice captures us all. And the rest of the characters are priceless. The Butter thing - the look on Geraldine's face is beyond words!

The only other comedy I can think of that has the same level of emotional depth and range is Only Fools and Horses, and that ran for 64 episodes in comparison, which is much more time to flesh everything out. It even manages to be appealing to people who aren't necessarily religious. The Vicar of Dibley really managed to take comedy and fuse it with a heart in a way no other comedy has done before or since imo.

the xmas special where alice gave birth in the stable is my all time funniest tv comedy moment, was a great program full of wonderful characters and emma will be sadly missed

It was also funny when she cofused the book on beauty by author Zadie Smith with the film Black Beauty at the Dibley book club.

absolutely, for someone who played someone quite Dim, in contrast she was actually a very intelligent and a gifted comic actor, I know someone who once met her, on a train ... she said she was one of the most loveliest humble people she'd ever met, quite shy, but friendly and approachable and had quite long conversation with her apparently. There was Owen the farmer, and Jim the stutterer, and part of the humor about them was that they were not quite with it either. David was the only one who was really mean to Alice.

If ever a character on TV was all "good" it was Alice. Kind, sweet, gentle. Beautifully written, incredibly acted. Emma Chambers was perfection in the role. One of British comedies unsung genius hero's.
