Your rose bush is quite beautiful! So glad you mentioned it’s two Bareroot roses put together! I thought this had to be multiple roses but you explained it quite nicely. Thank you!
Great review. I am particularly interested in disease resistance and reblooming habit and you did touch on this briefly -unlike other reviews. This is particularly important to me because roses are an expensive purchase and take up valuable space and time in the garden -it is not enough to just look beautiful once a year
In just a week after potting up a BR rose I was surprised to see leaves forming. 'Princess Alexandra of Kent' is the variety. My 'Queen of Sweden' roses are "lagging" a bit. Maybe the difference is they are planted in the ground. I hope it's not because I had to get aggressive poking (shoving) the very long roots into surrounding soil. I dug very deep holes, or so I thought.

Congratulations on your rose purchase! And welcome to my channel, it is good to have you here! I am planning on placing my rose order soon for next year! Very exciting... Happy gardening!
It is advised to plant together 3 or even 5, but my garden can't accommodate such big goodness. Either my wallet. It will definitely look fuller together to have 2 bushes, just don't forget to measure fertilizer for 2 shrubs.
Such a gorgeous rose and fascinating to see that this is actually two bare roots growing together, five or six years old and fed with organic fertiliser. Your video and all your replies to people’s questions were so helpful - thank you! I have just ordered one of these and am now wondering whether I should have ordered one (or two?!) more!
Hi Emily, yes, that rose is beautiful. Please keep in mind that bare root is different than own root. Own root can be bare root or potted. As for the number of plants. It all depends on space you have. Lady of Shalott is a gall shurb..
I have this rose. I planted it last year and it is tiny. I garden in Zone 6a and our winters can be harsh. Yours are beautiful. I hope mine looks like that one of these days!
Good luck, I never grew rose standards and hear that they can be a nightmare to overwinter. Some folks cut one side of roots and bend rose into the trench, then cover the whole thing with soil. Sounds horrible. In zone 7 they advise to wrap the entire thing with protective stuff. I don’t know which zone you live. Do yourself a favor and find out the protective measures needed in your area. Or maybe you are an expert and know what you are doing. Happy gardening!
Hi Olga. We got this rose for my mo-in-law on our visit to David Austin garden this summer. They then planted it in a big pot; alas, not doing too well😔. So nice to see this review. I just planted two of these climbers at each base of an arch. I only hope they do as well as yours. Do you follow the DA schedule for fertilizing and disease maintenance?
Yes, I do fertilizing twice a year, but I do my own disease maintenance. I invest heavily into organic soil and health of the plants and let them live and fight their battles themselves.

Hello Olga! Just revisiting this site with a question regarding the 'Lady of Shalotte'...In my zone for instance, if I were to prune it down 4"- 6" from ground level, how much growth would it put out before it flowers?? In other words, at what height would it flower if I were to prune it that low in spring?
Just recieved two of them myself here in sunny Savannah Georgia, will try to use mine as a climber...time will tell...just unpacked it three days ago and already it has a bud on it, many thanks for the video and information...
I live in the UK and will be visiting David Austin roses at the beginning of July. Can’t wait. I have 10 shrub roses and 6 ramblers all David Austin. After seeing your video I will be buying the Lady of Shalotte for a container. I have also seen your video of the Generous Gardener. (Gorgeous) Two of these will be purchased later in the year. Have you got Lady Emma Hamilton and if so how does she compare to Lady of Shallotte?
Hi Marilyn! You have 6 ramblers! Cool! Which ones are your favorites? I am introducing Adelaide d'Orleans rambler this year... Don't have Lady Emma Hamilton, so no opinion on it...
My favourite rambler is Rambling Rector. I also have Malvern Hills, Goldfinch, Albrighton and Phyllis Bide. After seeing your Generous Gardener I will have to find a place for it. Yours is so gorgeous. Today I purchased Lady of Shallot for a container on my patio. I see you are from Ukraine. The British people are behind the Ukraine and as many as 200,000 families are willing to take in women and children into their homes as refugees while their men are fighting. Putin is another Hitler. The Russian people must get rid of him.
I have been attracted to this rose everytime I see it on David Austin's website or catalog. I'm a bit intimidated because some gardeners show it rambling on a trellis. I don't have that kind of space. Yours looks manageable. Or, I suppose, I could control the size by pruning.
Hi Kate, This beauty can be trained as a shrub or short climber. It is all up to the gardener. That is why you see it sometimes on a trellis and sometimes as a shrub. I am going to create a video addressing this issue and 2 ways to train this rose. Thanks!
The catalogue can really help you to chose the perfect rose for your space… I say go for it, you won’t regret it. And the customer service is excellent, it’s thrilling receiving a David Austin Rose 🌹
@@ТатьянаАхвердыева The word "training" in English language applies to dogs and roses. This word is a standard word to use in dealing with roses and is widely utilized by David Austin himself. In Russian, folks use two different words. But that is the beauty of languages...
I've seen this grown in Malaysia but they have less petals (could be a young plant though). I am tempted to pick up one for my garden too cause I love the colour.
Hi Olga, the DA website says Lady of Shalott is suitable for a container, but the measurements provided (and the visual proof of your beautiful bush!) makes me think it will grow far too large for the half barrel I plan to put it in. Does this rose respond well to pruning to keep it at a manageable size?
My Lady of Shalott is big, I did put 2 plants together there 18 inches apart. You can grow it in pots, pot space will restrict the size of the plant. Lady of Shalott is a strong "octopus" rose. By that I mean it wants to become a short climber after its first bloom time and it is up to you to trim those long canes to keep it as a shrub. Or, maybe, you would want to keep it as short climber in the pot... So, measure pluses and minuses and make your decision.
Hi again, Olga, I planted two lady’s of shalott together like what you did in spring this year. I also planted a third one separately in a small flower bed against a wall. My question is, if I try to train the one planted against the wall as a climber, do I still need a trellis or stand? Or it will grow as a wall climber by itself?
Roses don't climb naturally. If you leave your climber alone, it will throw long stems and become ground cover with a big mess around your garden. So, yes, you do need to "help" them climb.
Hi Olga. I have Lady of Shallot shrub rose too & it’s such a great performer! Do you have any experience with the Lady of Shallot climbing rose variety? I am looking for a short climber to put over a 7 foot arch in a very sunny spot (6 hours of sun per day). I saw your video about the Generous Gardener which looks beautiful but I’m wondering if it’s too big for a 7 foot arch? Are there any other recommendations you have for me regarding climbing roses that would work for my situation? Appreciate your advice. Thanks!
Hi JerseyGirl. I just did a video where I included your question, sorry, not a great answer provided. I will be answering this question of your in my next Q&A. Stay tuned.
I have my 2 Lady of Shalott together, approx. 18 inches apart. It is a bit tight inside, I don' have enough space there.. So, a bit wider distance will be better.
Your video is so very lovely, I love your roses🌺🌸🌼… I am a novice with roses, so learning things as I progress with my collection. I noticed that your rose plant leaves do not have any disease at all. Please share what you do to keep the leaves so very well without diseases and so bushy, any advice will help me, thank you🙏🏼🌸🌺
Good morning Jeannette, The reason my roses are healthy (and I strongly believe in it) is that I don’t put anything artificial into that soil. I work only with fertilizers for organic gardening. It sounds expensive, but it really is not. It means that natural ingredients were used to make that garden food. Please check this video of mine - ruclips.net/video/m0RsqlFnRQU/видео.html If you want your roses to have a healthy start, make sure you water them deeply their first year in your garden, this way they will develop deep roots and won’t be so dependent on your watering in the future. Happy gardening!
Thank you dear Olga for your prompt response🌸, it is such good advice to get hands on organic gardening, I do believe in this way of life and am thankful for your wonderful tips. Thank you for the video which explains this in detail, much appreciate it 🙏🏼🙏🏼
So beautiful, do you spray anything to prevent blackspot and thrips. ? I just planted roses this year and have a lot blackspot, thrips . I am in GA zone 7b. Thanks
I try to use organic products when possible. On this rose I used Bonide32 oz. RTU Insecticidal SUPER Soap to fight aphids, they are a problem for me. As for black spot, try Rose Rx 3in 1. Those are organics.
It’s great! How the beautiful they are. I have the climbing rose Valentine’s Day and I wondered if I cut the main can at 30 inch height, the more bud come out , and I did it. After watching your video, I think I’m wrong And we never cut the main can of climbing rose (in normal condition). Please tell me if iI’m right?. Thank you so much.
Yes, we never cut main canes on a climbing rose, just laterals. We cut mail canes when we want to adjust the shape of the rose. Your rose will be all right, it will live and will send strong main canes next year. You won’t get many blooms from your rose next year, but if you keep and train main canes, they will bear lateral shoots the year after that, and on those you will have blooms.
Hi, Your video is very informative and helps people who want to buy LOS. I have LOS in my VA garden and I get wonderful blooms in late spring flush. It then blooms intermittently during summer and fall. How is your experience with Fall blooms ? Do you mind doing a video for fall blooms of LOS ?
Hi Manish, I live in CT and we are expecting first frost date to arrive October 15th. My roses are almost done blooming, just Lady of Shallot and Boscobel have some late blooms. That is it. Each rose is different of course, the fist to finish blooming in my garden are Generous Gardener and Queen of Sweden. They are already starting to loose their leaves for winter. So, nothing big to show right now, can do just a walk around and show you some single blooms.
i have one alnwic rose by David Austin and my rose has flowers since february to late november. i recently adquire a Lady of shalott but i was not lucky because it arrives damaged and dried
@@OlgaCarmody i already contacted David Austin and they will send another one. hope this time is fine. I have also acquired a Emily bronte and I hope I can train my rose as a climber.
It will be perfectly fine for your rose. It is a tough plant and will love to bask in the sun in zone 7. Remember, roses lived in ancient times and are good and reliable plants. And how wrong can you go with double bloomers!
I grow LOS in a tropical country (Malaysia), it blooms throughout the year.. but not much as shown in this video. During raining season, all leaves fall to the ground caused by black spot.. if the outside temperature reaches 35-40 degree C during midday, the petals will turn out crackers (haha)
@@TheCherishGlory Yes, I heard about the black spot is easy to humid areas. In my area zone 7 ,Virginia. I can see some reviews are the same as yours in my area.
I use Espoma Organic All Purpose Plant Tone Fertilizer. My local Home Depot is out of it, so for second rose feed I am going to use Jones organic knock out rose granula plant food.
I don’t use Miracle Grow. It supplies a lot of nitrogen to plants and they quickly grow big, green and bushy. That nitrogen is derived from synthetic ammonium and nitrates. Off products of those are harmful to microbes, warms and other forms of life in soil. So, you get big results quickly and then end up with almost dead soil, your plant is finished as soon as you forget to feed it. I don’t know which products are available in Canada, but we live in the time where every company is trying to do organic plant food line. Look for fertilizer labeled for organic gardening. It simply means that only natural stuff was used to create that stuff. Happy gardening!
Olga, love your video! I already watched at least 5 times :-) A quick question: in your video, you showed the DA catalog and it seems there is 10% coupon inside. Could you check if it still can be used? I’m looking for one and just noticed today in your video :-) thanks!
Hi Michelle, DA catalog usually includes one coupon for early shoppers in spring. So, that old one is done. And, if you don’t know, you can sign up for next years catalog. It comes somewhat late, at least later than I want to have it. And if you give them your email, you will receive a discount code in early spring. At least that is how it was during previous years. I learned to place my orders during fall/ winter for next year. They can run out of your selections in spring.
I live in US, Connecticut, zone 7. The big maintenance pruning of roses is in spring during the leafing of new leaves, it is beginning of April in my area. Happy Gardening.
Full sun is fine in my zone 6/7. Humidity is high in summer where I live and this rose is somewhat susceptible to black spot. Not too bad, it won't defoliate all together, but will have bare bottom at the end of summer if I won't treat it.
@@Theothersideofwatashi I spray with natural stuff, so you can say that disease resistance is pretty good on this rose. I use neem oil and horticultural oil on it. As for the air flow, I do have 2 plants quite close together, and they are old, around 8-10 years. Good air flow does help with diseases...
Hm, no pale yellow blossoms at all.. I talked more about the transition of bloom color of Lady of Shallot in this Q&A video: ruclips.net/video/tWFFvTz1N3E/видео.html. Hope it helps.
Really disappointed LOS because a lot of leaves were dead and flowers were ugly in California summer. I gave her enough water and fertilizers. I will remove her this winter from my backyard
Yes, roses show different performance in different climates, unfortunately. My LosS is not the strongest disease resistant rose in my garden, but it has a wonderful ability to come alive next spring no matter what.
It all depends on the climate. I live in 6/7 growing zone and we do main trimming in Spring here, when roses starts to wake up from dormancy. I just tie my roses for winter, no major pruning. After first big frost in our area in the fall, I lightly trim long shoots to prevent wind damage.

@@OlgaCarmody Ok, got it👌 Thank you.
Stay tuned.
Hi Olga, your Lady of Shalott shrubs are amazingly beautiful. How wide is the distance between 2 shrubs you recommend for future growing?
I have my 2 Lady of Shalott together, approx. 18 inches apart. It is a bit tight inside, I don' have enough space there.. So, a bit wider distance will be better.
Your video is so very lovely, I love your roses🌺🌸🌼… I am a novice with roses, so learning things as I progress with my collection. I noticed that your rose plant leaves do not have any disease at all. Please share what you do to keep the leaves so very well without diseases and so bushy, any advice will help me, thank you🙏🏼🌸🌺
Good morning Jeannette,
The reason my roses are healthy (and I strongly believe in it) is that I don’t put anything artificial into that soil. I work only with fertilizers for organic gardening. It sounds expensive, but it really is not. It means that natural ingredients were used to make that garden food. Please check this video of mine - ruclips.net/video/m0RsqlFnRQU/видео.html
If you want your roses to have a healthy start, make sure you water them deeply their first year in your garden, this way they will develop deep roots and won’t be so dependent on your watering in the future. Happy gardening!
Thank you dear Olga for your prompt response🌸, it is such good advice to get hands on organic gardening, I do believe in this way of life and am thankful for your wonderful tips. Thank you for the video which explains this in detail, much appreciate it 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Ma'am your roses are a dream come true. What steps do you take to keep them healthy ? If youj could plz share.....
Most of my videos are dedicated to growing roses, check them out, there are plenty of good advise...
@@OlgaCarmody thanks 👍🏻
Amazing! Is your 'Lady of Shalotte' planted as a group or a single bush?
Ok...I see that it's two shrubs planted together. So gorgeous! The rose glows like stained glass 🌱
Yes, there are 2 shrubs growing into each other.
I ordered 5 Roald Dahl roses for this spring and am planning to plant them as one big bush!
@@OlgaCarmody Hello Olga,
Revisiting the site...how far apart are your 'Lady of Shalotts' planted from one another?
@@OlgaCarmody Ok, I just heard 18" apart. You've sold me on this spectacular rose. It's available in Canada but now everybody wants it, lol. 🌹
How many plant did you planted ?
So beautiful, do you spray anything to prevent blackspot and thrips. ? I just planted roses this year and have a lot blackspot, thrips . I am in GA zone 7b. Thanks
I try to use organic products when possible. On this rose I used Bonide32 oz. RTU Insecticidal SUPER Soap to fight aphids, they are a problem for me. As for black spot, try Rose Rx 3in 1. Those are organics.
ما أروع هذه الورود وألوانها الخلابة كم رائعة ألوانها🌺🌸🌻
Do you mind leaving your comment in English? I am using an automated translator and don’t understand your message…
@@OlgaCarmody Thank you so much. I love your comments. It makes me being more confidence in building up my rose garden. Thank you.
Шикарный куст.
Hi Olga! How often do you feed your roses with the Espoma fertilizer? Your roses are stunning!!
I feed them twice a year. Next video which is coming in a day or tow will be about how I fertilize my roses. Happy gardening!
@@OlgaCarmody Thank you so much!! I'll be looking forward to that vid!!!😁🙏🌈🌟
i have one alnwic rose by David Austin and my rose has flowers since february to late november. i recently adquire a Lady of shalott but i was not lucky because it arrives damaged and dried
Bigger part of my order didn't arrive yet and roses are starting to leaf out in my zone 6/7. You can go for a refund if your rose arrived damaged....
@@OlgaCarmody i already contacted David Austin and they will send another one.
hope this time is fine.
I have also acquired a Emily bronte and I hope I can train my rose as a climber.
So beautiful! Is it ok to plant LOS in full sun area only, I don't know if it will be too heat for LOS in zone 7..or 3-4 hrs sunny is enough..?
Hey where are you from and what is the best climatic condition for roses 😀
I garden in zone 6/7 Coastal CT. Roses do well almost everywhere in zone 6-11
Its beautiful plant. What fertilizer u use?
I use Espoma Organic All Purpose Plant Tone Fertilizer. My local Home Depot is out of it, so for second rose feed I am going to use Jones organic knock out rose granula plant food.
Hi Olga
I live in Toronto, Canada. I don’t get the fertiliser that you use on your roses. Plantone. Can I use Miracle Grow. What do you suggest.
The color is amazing. How long was it grown in your garden?
I am growing this bush for 7 years already.
Яка краса!❤
@@OlgaCarmody Thank you so much for your information!
Jason from Fraser Vally Rose Farm Recommended you ❤✌
what if you sow in other zones for instance in zone 13 ?
Zone 13 is tough for a rose unfortunately. It is possible though, you can grow roses in pots under shade...
Is it easy to take cuttings from this rose?
Yes, easy. Thanks
I am brasil i love roses my perfect.
I love roses too! Happy gardening in Brasil!
When do you prune your roses? Are you in Romania?
I live in US, Connecticut, zone 7. The big maintenance pruning of roses is in spring during the leafing of new leaves, it is beginning of April in my area. Happy Gardening.
How tall you prune them?
How do I order this lady shallot rose ?
I order my David Austin roses from davidaustinroses.com. Here in US they are hard to find in the nurseries near me.
@@OlgaCarmody Thank you , My roommate ordered it for me today
Lady shallot
Crown princess and Graham Thomas roses
I like yellow, gold , orange rose
How does it handle full sun and humidity
Full sun is fine in my zone 6/7. Humidity is high in summer where I live and this rose is somewhat susceptible to black spot. Not too bad, it won't defoliate all together, but will have bare bottom at the end of summer if I won't treat it.
@@OlgaCarmody is it a spray to help with the black spot? Does having good air flow help prevent black spot.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
I am wondering my Lady of Shallot rose is a fake one. It has very light pale yellow blossoms.
Hm, no pale yellow blossoms at all.. I talked more about the transition of bloom color of Lady of Shallot in this Q&A video: ruclips.net/video/tWFFvTz1N3E/видео.html. Hope it helps.

Oh, gosh, many roses are hard to find these days.
u said its thorny....but i cant see any thorns here
You just have to see yourself then.
Osmocote. Glimmend blad❤
夏洛特夫人?
It is Lady of Shalott rose.

Hi Olga, you roses are beautiful❤️ Do you cut rose branches off in winter to help them grow bigger in the spring?
It all depends on the climate. I live in 6/7 growing zone and we do main trimming in Spring here, when roses starts to wake up from dormancy. I just tie my roses for winter, no major pruning. After first big frost in our area in the fall, I lightly trim long shoots to prevent wind damage.
@@OlgaCarmody Thank you for your reply. What do you mean by tieing your roses in winter? How do you tie them? Do you have a video for trimming roses?
