    Lady of Shallot is in her fourth season here in my garden. Partial shade, six feet tall and five feet wide. Super healthy. I live along the coast of Southern California where we get lots of morning dew and overcast days in May and June. I don't spray. No mildew, no disease whatsoever. She's a dream. She just keeps blooming. 😍

      I have a Desdemona and I’m so disappointed as is very slow to take off. This coming Spring (2024) will be its third year and it looks the same as when I planted. I’m hoping this year it’s going to take off and grow! I’ve been considering getting a Lady of Shalot because I love the color. Great video, your exuberance for that variety just might make my mind up! Im going to subscribe for more tips!

      Often bare root plants (depending upon the trauma and things they go through), take a season or two to settle in and get established. So keep up the "TLC" and eventually the good genetics should come to the fore.

      Yes we agree, but his legacy lives on in the people he has trained and worked with over the years. We don't quite understand what is happening to your plant. This (as you've noted) is a stunning, easy to grow selection that regularly performs really well in our trials.
      Perhaps when you get a chance you might to tune in to some of David's other videos on the subject of roses (there's several posted here on this channel).
      That might help you see if there's anything that is lacking in your site, situation or cultural practices.
      As you will see, we go to a lot of trouble to produce nice, big, well established POTGROWN plants that when they are shipped to our partnering garden centers, are ready to make a quick transition into their new homes in people's gardens.
      The essential things with roses is to start out with good healthy, well grown plants. Then make sure to plant them in a sunny spot, in well drained soil, this video will explain more about David's suggestions for planting and after care: ruclips.net/video/BUAc7Ggyoxw/видео.htmlsi=KJhp9zENuxgqk79j.
      As we hope you will see, great varieties like the ones we feature, are easy and rewarding to grow, so hopefully with some TLC and perhaps extra watering during any prolonged dry periods, your plant will begin to establish and flourish and begin to show off its amazing flowers.
      If all else fails, contact your local extension office, master gardeners or your local garden center: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ to see if any of these knowledgeable people can help you more.
      Finally, have you subscribed to our channel?

      In those two areas, they are not sprayed or even watered!
      They are on their own! So we get to compare them with the others, so we can truly see, which ones are most likely to put on a good show in average garden conditions here in our (Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern) region.

      We don't do anything to them for winter. That's part of our trialing process, we want only the hardiest, easiest and best performers. So, then we know which ones perform best in this Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region.

      Several years ago David says he put down "milky spore" in his lawn areas and that seems to reduce the population significantly. Of course, they come in from other areas too, so he uses traps and other organic control methods including not using insecticidal chemicals and it seems that there's now a natural balance that means he gets a few roses nibbled from time to time but seldom any devastation.

    If I am not mistaken, the soils in your area are sandy. Do you think there is any correlation to how well a lot of your roses are growing?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +1

      The soil in our general area can be sandy, but that doesn't really matter much, any well-drained average soil will produce good results. In fact, the average mineral soil is likely to be more nutritious than a sandy one and therefore may produce better results.
      As David mentions in several of our videos, good drainage is very important.

      Thanks for great question.
      Scientist's are working on a cure and plant breeders are busy trying to breed resistant varieties, but alas, there is isn't much you can do at present except remove any infected plants (as soon as you see it), and also dispose of any invasive rosa multiflora that are in your immediate vicinity.
      It is spread by a little mite that lives on the "wild" rose and then infects the garden plants. So if it is possible, getting rid of the multiflora (which is good to do anyway), will go a long way to preventing infection.

    Are these roses grows on his own roots or Grafted ? If grafted do they have suckers

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +2

      Most of them are budded onto Dr. Huey rootstocks and most of the time they do not produce suckers, but every now and them a sucker pushes up from underneath the bud union. They can be easily identified by their different, green colored foliage, and (if they get to that stage) small semi-double, dark red flowers.
      It is of course, important to remove these suckers ASAP.
      In recent years we have been growing more and more selections on their own roots and that is part of our ongoing trialing process. So stay tuned because we will be reporting our findings as they evolve.

      "Your rose bushes are very beautiful, I have four rose bushes but they don't look beautiful"
      Thanks, that's kind of you to say so, but we are sorry to hear your plants are not doing so well. 😟
      All we can suggest is that you try to watch some of our videos here on this channel. David is very experienced, he has been growing roses (and lots of other plants) for a long time, and if you follow his tips and suggestions and try to catch some of the many videos that we have posted here on this channel, we should be ableto help you enjoy a lot more success😉👍💚👏
      It will also be very important to choose the best performing selections. As you may have noticed, we do a lot of trialing and testing, so that only the best ones are sent to our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/.
      What's more, the experts at each of these centers, choose the ones that they know do best in their neighborhoods too, so that's why with a little more research and the guidance of these of these folks, you should be able to enjoy much more success and get a lot more pleasure with your roses 😊.
      Come to think about it, have you subscribed to our channel yet?
      If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed.
      And, as you find them helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well.
      And, now that we are entering the main planting season (spring through late Fall) try to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections (including some superb roses), so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons. Is that one plant on the fence?!?!

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад

      Yes, just one. Planted about 4 springs ago. It usually takes about one season to establish, and then the second year is when you will see the strong shoots appear, then more each year. These are trained on the fence or trellis, etc. During winter/ early spring & then they flush out with flowering side shoots to produce all these flowers - keeping those shoots horizontal means more side shoots & more flowers.

    How to order the Lady of Shallot?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +1

      Our David Austin Roses (and the rest of our plants) are available through a network of hundreds of garden centers located in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/
      We typically send them out when they are coming into flower, so that you can see, touch and smell them in all their gorgeous reality.
      Not every garden center carries every variety, so if you are looking for a particular variety it would probably be wise to call ahead and perhaps even consider reserving the ones you want.

      Since our experience is here in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states region of the USA: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/
      We are unable to guide you. Our best advice would be to check with your local nurseries and keep an eye out in gardens in your area. If any varieties are doing well in your neighborhoods, then the chances are they will preform well for you too.

      We trim out some of the older branches in early spring, and train horizontally the recently made flexible canes because these the ones that produce side growths that carry the flowers.
      Here's a link to another of our videos that will show how to do it: ruclips.net/video/-HExhGtRrRY/видео.html

      Thanks for your message.
      Roses generally often do quite well in maritime areas. So, it is great to hear that you are experiencing good performance in your neighborhood with this excellent selection.
      As you've probably noted from David's observations, this has been especially good in our trials too.

    The video coloration is off. Need a better camera to video.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +4

      Yes, thank you. The colors represented in this video do not do this variety justice, it is much prettier in reality. Which is partly why we are such devotees of sending out plants out to garden centers when they are flowering, so that everyone can see (and buy) their plants when they are in bloom and view their colors in glorious reality. 😉👏
      We suspect we might be better growers of plants than we are photographers!
      Its not really the fault of the camera, its more like operator error! Especially on days like the one we filmed this video, when the sun was beaming out bright light one minute, then hiding behind clouds the next, to in seconds produce different levels of light.
      Thanks again for pointing this out, we'll try to pay more attention to changing light levels going forward.

      Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, the quality of plants on offer through various sources sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. There's nothing like picking them out for yourself, that's why we put so much effort into shipping our pot grown plants when they are coming up to their prime at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/.
      That way you can see, touch, compare and even smell the flowers for yourself.
