About 40 years ago, there was a sheriff in our town that had found this lost puppy in the forest and took it home. As it grew up, he realized that it was in fact, not a dog but a big fucking wolf. He didn’t want to give it away though because he loved the wolf too much and the wolf loved him a lot. So ya, for a couple of years our town had a sheriff who. owned a pet Wolf.

Foxes are known as tricksters for a reason in many cultures, they are ridiculously clever for a wild animal. And now, through human intervention because one guy got curious, we now have a breed of domesticated foxes people can own as pets that are very friendly towards humans, and it wasn't even that long ago that it happened.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue Месяц назад +20

It took a mere sixty years to develop a human-friendly breed of fox. That's NOTHING in evolutionary terms! I mean, damn.

So wolfdogs aren't horrible pets, they're very loving, but they're also very independent and need a lot of space. Keeping them in the cities is akin to animal abuse, but if you're in the country and want a wolfdog, go for it, they love the freedom of the country.

    • @kerianhalcyon2769

There's a lot of actual dog breeds that are incredibly similar. Sheepdogs for example need tons of space - I've seen in person a Border Colie run themselves ragged in a circle at the corner of this person's yard because it could only run around in a small space fenced off in front of a trailer home. No clue if the poor guy's still around.

7:46 I have a legit phobia of being in or near woods at night. I don't remember it but apparently when I was 2 or 3 coyotes that were living in a relatively small patch of woods near my house, murdered two baby cows one night. So there was the dying wails of the calves, the moos from the grown cows, and the yelps and howls from the coyotes. My dad shined a bright ass light towards them, and all you could see were the coyotes glowing eyes moving around. Like I said, I don't remember it, but I was on my mom's hip, apparently watching and never forgetting the feeling of fear.

I had a wolf collie golden retriever hybrid growing up. Most lovable dog and scary smart but he was easily scared around people he didn't know and would hide in my room when we had company. Approach the door aggressively and you would definitely see the wild animal as he would make anyone back up until we gave the ok. Wolf dogs are always a wolf first dog second which means they're unpredictable but not always in a bad way just a might take off in a full run because they're bored or lay on your bed while you're making it kinda way.

My older sister stopped me before I got too close because like 10ft away was the momma looking straight at me. It was an experience that's for sure.

Convergent evolution means that two separate animals that aren’t related at all as in not in the same genus or branch of animals that develops the same attributes over long periods of time due to evolution. It basically means that trait was beneficial enough to both species that both developed it.

Red foxes climb trees as well. And they laugh at you. That messes with your brain in the woods as much as watching a squirrel chew on a deer skull for the calcium, or mating racoons- they are screamers at 2am. The biggest difference between a coyote's diet and a fox's is once you rule the things bigger than a fox, coyotes eat foxes not the other way around. I grew up in New England, and the coywolves have become their own species. I've been in wolf country in Canada, and I now live in the South West with "real" coyotes. And a Nevada desert coyote isn't a lot bigger than big fox in New Hampshire or Maine.

The Tasmanian Tiger is what was on the left. It’s an extinct breed of native dog sadly during the 1800s we here in Australia hunted them to damn near extinction. Unfortunately the population was so low that they couldn’t get the numbers up and with bounties on the animals in question the last known Tasmanian Tiger died in captivity, In the 1930s.
And the main reason we hunted them was because they were killing off easy to kill prey like sheep, pigs and cows, and the farmers weren’t having it. Thus the bounty system became a thing.
That’s not to say that people haven’t claimed that they’ve seen them in the wild still, but it’s always been disproven sadly. There are people that every year go into the wilds of Tasmania to try and find them they never successful at this point, we really just need to accept the fact that we eradicated one of animals, I would really like to see.
Even dingoes are endangered. There’s only a few areas in which they can naturally grow any more.
And then there’s a Tasmanian devils we didn’t hunt them however, they have acquired a infection in their snout as the disease progresses the snout will unfortunately become painful which causes them stop eating and eventually die of starvation.
There’s even talk of finding a clean colony, and migrating them to the mainland, just to save the species lives.

Yeah, I can vouch for coyotes not having issues living. We have coyotes around our property out in the middle of the countryside. First year they showed up, there were three. Mom, Dad, one pup. Three years later, and there are four separate groups consisting of at least 5 members each, one bigger one has we think 10. Coyote pups are hella cute, but by all that is good and holy do they have to come yip and howl at my window at three in the morning?!
Our coyotes so far aren't particularly aggressive here, but they do occasionally kill someone's chicken or something. My knowledge of foxes isn't so firsthand, but I believe the real difference in temperament between fox and coyote is foxes don't have to eat nearly as much, as they are far smaller, so they're less likely to kill domesticated livestock for food. I could be wrong on that.

Back then when farming was done by farmers and not huge factories where cattle and chickens do not even see the light of the sun.
    Even bears kill sheep.
Bears like fine rotten sheep meat.
They leave it after killing it to rot a bit so the meat softens. While wolfs have no problem eating prey alive. Depends how hungry they are.

Like there are usually two ‘leaders’ of a pack, aka alphas, and they are usually - not always - one male and one female. What gets me is I hear this statement of there being no alpha, but it’s never explained further, and that makes me suspicious of such claims.

We've had a couple of dingos, it is illegal to keep wild dingos as pets, so as to stop the trade on illegal animals but there isnt to my knowledge a legal breeder for domestic dingos. Sadly the only reason we could capture them was because they were sick or bred with kelpie or cattle dogs.
Its sad to see they were lovely dogs, especially because there are so many more aggressive 'domesticated dogs'.

Coyotes can actually kill dogs and children which is why they are hated, unlike Foxes who only really hunt small animals. It is possible for a Fox to kill a small dog, but it’s not uncommon for a “lost” dog to really be a Coyote’s meal, hence why we hate Coyotes more than Foxes.
Foxes are also just generally smarter about not being seen or caught by people, so there’s that.

A small dog. Coyotes can't bite through most shoos. Coyote hate is just substitute for huge racism especially by superstitious rural folk. And besides. Id you want them gone guess who you have to bring in? Wolves. Wolves can definitely kill a full grown man, especially injured or week wolves who aren't part of a pack.

I was actually hunted by wolves once. It stared me down and I will say this- wolves are not dogs. There was actual malice in those piercing, yellow eyes. Not hunger, evil. If I wasn't already close to my truck, I wouldn't have gotten away. The scariest part was hearing the rest of the pack behind me rustling around and snapping twigs.

Maybe don't demonize an animal we've almost made extinct due to our own greed and stupidity as a species. Especially on a video that's criticizing your view hence the whole bit about casual geo forgetting them in the video about misconceptions.
Wolves are not evil. They are innocent animals that just want to live their lives. You're closer to being evil for contributing to such harmful misinformation when there's no excuse to be this ignorant about wolves anymore.
On top of that, breeds like border collies were bred specifically to have the same look in their eyes as wolves when they're working. I guess BCs are evil now too.

People these days forget the HUNDREDS OF YEARS of lore and documented events of wolves actively preying on humans. We’re animals to them, and if they’re hungry enough or we act like prey around them then it’s fair play.
They’re not “poor, misunderstood furbabies in the woods.” They’re apex predators despite being scared crapless of us.

I'm so tired of the misconception that wolves don't have alphas. An alpha is just a leader/dominant animal in which wolves are social animals-there's clearly leaders. The study that was debunked had all these weird positions besides from alpha like omega, beta, gamma, et cetera. As to my knowledge, that doesn't negate there still being leaders/alphas.
