Why doesn't such a great piece of advice reach millions of ESL learners? Many people speak fast and they have a strong regional accent, which makes them very difficult to understand.
@HidayaateMehbu:b I'm glad you found it useful. I would say it's habitual. It's something we learn as children when developing our speech and language skills from our care givers, family, culture, community etc. We can also use it as a tool to emotionally protect ourselves as we grow up. If we speak fast, then the attention is off us quicker and we can avoid being in the limelight for too long. Often it's not conscious though.
Thank you so much for this video. I am the type of person who does everything fast, walk fast, eat fast, talk fast, do things fast. I am working on being present with intentionIt on everything I do and boy it takes a huge amount of effort to slow down. I will incorporate your tips and meditate on the deeper meaning of why. Again, thank you very much. God bless you.
your video helped me realize i was breathing wrong, chest breathing where my exhales result in a stomach out and inhales result in a a collapsed / tigh stomach
I know that speaking fast for me comes from a fear of taking up too much space or getting interrupted because when I was a kid I didn't have much room to truly be listened to.
I have this too. I clearly remember the time when I was 9 and I was saying something and my dad told me to “stfu. Nobody wants to listen to you”. I don’t remember if I was talking fast then already because I’d gotten the message I shouldn’t take up space, or if the speed happened afterward. I’ve been practicing all my life and I’ve fallen out of it in the past years and the speed and stumbling over my words has come back. Unfortunately I’m not 9 anymore and it’s made an impact on my life.
Thankyou @Anouska Taylor MAM....very informative and to the point 1). Breathe deeply...calm your nervous system. Belly Breathing. 2). Intensional thinking.....articulation would reduce your speed 3). Use deliberate PAUSES. they would help you to slow down. 4). Match your speaking pace with your walking pace....speak as you walk. 5). Record yourself...listen to audio. 6). Ask yourself why you are speaking fast
Breathing builds cadence. Something that I am always trying to learn It give weight to what was spoken. Such an impt life skill! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this insight. I'm a very fast talker & other 😊things too. I got emotional to why I do this , nerves, as I do feel not heard when talk. I'm short, too, so maybe factor?? I constantly have been told all my life I talk too fast. Bashes at my confidence more. 😢 It's hard to slow down, in my head when others talk spunds so slow. I think get on with it. As of now, 52 is very late to change, but will try my best & use your advice & watch other videos. 😊
It's never too late if you really want to create change. I have worked with many clients much older than you :-) If you'd like any support, please book a session. I'd love to help you.
I'm a little of both. I do many things fast, but also talk fast when I get nervous/excited. I've been talking very slow to myself, using pauses and less filler words. This way I hope to land in the middle by not talking too fast but not quite as slowly when I'm practicing alone.
Thank you very much for the tips. I've been a mild stutterer my whole life, and I found out that if I speak slower, I stutter less. People often ask me to repeat what I said because I say it way too fast, even I can't understand myself sometimes 😅
Thank you because tomorrow is the last day j have to practice for a interview for my Science fair and I will try these tips because my teacher says I talk to fast
I loved the ending of the video where you delved into the psychology behind speaking fast it was a nice food for thought that will make me more conscious about it in the future when slowing down my speech. great helpful video!
I have been a trade instructor for 20 years i still catch myself speaking to fast now and again. I take a few deep breaths as you have described to settle myself down, then i go again.
Thank you that was very helpful. I feel as if I was constantly under pressure to rush when translating to or from a younger speaker because they tend to speak more fast.
As a do-everything-fast person I have never heard so many things that resonate with me. Some of these I'd sort of worked out - like the overt articulation - but I still find executing this action faithfully immensely difficult. And for me at least, your psychological observation was spot on. So... I feel slightly less like a crazy person than I did yesterday. Thanks a million.
It is very difficult to do by yourself because usually the pattern is so deeply engrained. If you want some support, you can always book a private session with me. Links under video :-)
you can also incorporate the emphasis on some words in your speech while talking to anyone, in this way you can deliberately able to slow down yourself much smoothly as you are forming your sentence and also putting pauses in beween .
Thank you for making this video. Very helpful. On the last point, in meetings, I tend to öften speak fast because I can't think of something spontaneously. How to tackle this ?.
So my suggestion would be to get in touch with the emotion around this e.g. fear, anxiety etc. (there's no right or wrong). It's usually rooted in what others will think of us if we can't think of the "right" thing to say. Allow yourself to feel whatever it is and take some deep belly breaths. This will calm your nervous system and allow yourself to think more clearly and speak slower as a result.
Since you are researching on this topic how about we explore "Large Families are Loud Families".. maybe because growing up you have to compete with a lot of people to get speak
You might not want to get advice from a younger person or stranger, BUT a good tip to not be nervous is practicing. I know it's repetitive and you've probably heard this a lot before (even I got annoyed when she said to practice speaking slowly, but she's right). As a young actor at first acting was scary for me, but now that I've practiced and gotten used to performing in front of hundreds of people, the crowd doesn't bother me anymore. But some things you can practice doing is do something that makes you feel confident and record yourself and see how you act and stand. Pretending to be confident and looking confident can really help you when you're nervous in a public speaking situation. Also, start talking to small crowds and build up from there. I hope this helps.
I have always talked fast as far as I can remember. But if I intentionally slow down, I sound very mechanical in my own ears, hence revert back to the fast pace.
Hi dear professor Thank you so much for your help and advice. I really appreciate your job. I wish you peace and happiness under the sky of prosperity. All the best. Take care and have a good time. Your follower from Algeria not Nigeria
Yes gestures are very important in speech. I would say it's more useful for emphasis of our words and strengthening their meaning, than slowing down speech, however if it works for you then that's great.
I am trying to understand the finer linings between extremes. like being cocky and being confident.. Very fine line Also speaking too slow may make you sound low in energy.
It's really about learning to vary pace vs. speaking slow or fast. Being able to use the pace to add meaning to words in different situations. Cocky vs. confident - it's more about how we really feel about ourselves. Cockiness is usually coming from a place of insecurity hidden behind a persona of "cocky". Confidence is understated, it's not trying to prove anything to anyone. We connect to our inherent value.

2. Intentional artculation
3. Pauses
4. Match your speaking pace and walking pace.
