A number of you were asking me about this year's non-qualifiers after I attempted to rank the Eurovision 2023 Grand Final songs as a professional juror would. Today we're back in the jury seat and maybe offering some justice to songs that had their chances cut short.

I would have absolutely saved Latvia. Aijā is one of the most beautiful songs at this year's Eurovision ❤
This is going to be so interesting. Can’t wait. Still 💔 over Latvia. If we had us (the UK) voting or the juries. They would have got through over Serbia BUT I do understand the public not voting for them. It’s a grower and needs a few listens I think before you appreciate it.

Im so mad about the way the Romanian broadcaster treated Theodor. They completely sabotaged him, tried to make his act as unvoteable as possible, and literally threatened legal action when he fought to improve it. He’s an 18 year old performing in front of 10s of millions of people, Eurovision was his dream, it was unacceptable what they did to him.
Maybe I’m biased cause I really enjoy the song, but I think it could’ve stood a chance if he had a supportive staging team who took his ideas and modified them into something dynamic that accentuated his stage presence and vocals.
My criteria for my personal ranking are: Voice - Song (instrumentation) - "Emotion" on what I see and feel with the performance lol then I add, the Virality in my ears and Extra points that could be summed as "Overall".
From SF1 I would save Latvia, and Iceland, from SF2. I want the jury back in the semis. I think they could have the 40%, the televote keep the 50% and add a 10% in streaming for all the songs, streamings in a song contests should be considerer in a voting system.

Fav NQer - I think I probably enjoyed Malta the most but think Latvia deserved it the most.
I really hope the jury comes back for the semi-final. I found it soooo stupid that they got rid of them 😢
Morning Stu, from down under. Another great video. I love the way you get me to think about things and I might come back to the personal ranking thing.
Suggestion for another video: it feels to me like Eurovision has gotten better year on year since about the mid ‘00s. This might be a bit of a chore (so feel free to ignore) but is this actually the case or does this have something to do with me just getting older and the entries corresponding more to my late middle-aged tastes? The way to demonstrate this might be to look at the competition 10 years ago and what’s the spread of your ‘objective’ scores would have been using the same criteria.
Haha, I mean if we were going off of my "objective" scores the answer would be a resounding yes! 😆 But that kind of thing is always a matter of opinion.
What I'll say for now is that I'm quite close to having seen all the Eurovisions. We've been going in reverse order from the most recent editions and the last one we saw (or earliest depending on how you look at it) was 1967. Once we've seen them all there will likely be a video to be made about that. 😉
@@stu_makes_vids I’ll be interested to know your thoughts once you’ve finished complete run through. Eurovision is a very different beast nowadays to the way it was. I’d be interested to know what you think are the key milestones between now and its origins. Maybe pick up some key songs that you think. Illustrate your points.
On a totally different issue, who do you thinks should have one in 1969: UK, France, Spain, or the Netherlands?
This is something I’m curious about too. I only started properly watching esc in 2021, but the first one I watched was 2019. When I decided to watch back to 2009, I felt that in general they were getting weaker and weaker as time went on (except 2014, what a year). I’m not sure if this is recency bias, tbf I do find a lot of the early 2010s music very dated, or if it’s an actual improvement in quality. I think it might be a mixture of both.
I don't like the Icelandic song - i kinda feel a bit of an outliner like that. I like Dilja but i find the song annoying and dull.
Another superb video! 💙 I like how you're balanced with all the songs - picking out the positives, and offering suggestions for improvement when criticsing. I would so put Georgia through - couldn't believe they didn't qualify. Feel like Latvia also deserved to qualify (especially after so long) but that probably would have meant Serbia would be out, and I really enjoyed their entry. Hopefully Latvia and Georgia will qualify next year!
I was in the arena for semi 1 live show, Serbia was dreadful live and clearly only scraped through on diaspora. I feel so bad for the Sudden Lights lads it was the first time I have ever felt that Latvia had a undeserved NQ
Semi 1: I would have taken Malta and dumped Israel. Semi 2: Georgia in, Cyprus out.

I really think you are way too kind. You are giving Ireland a couple 4 points as the lowest, after litterally slaughtering both the staging and the lead singers stage presence and also partly his vocals. I think the differences in quality between the different acts are greater than what your points would suggest.
And as for your points in the second semi (often regarded at this years weakest semi) 42 out of a total of 48 points you are giving are 6,5 and higher. And a staggering 35 points are 7,5 or higher.
I guess you REALLY likes this years edition of the Eurovision!
The numbers are just to assist me in making a final ranking that makes sense. A 5 and lower indicates significant problems, but it goes lower based on how significant it was and if it lacked any redeeming qualities. I could have ripped into Ireland more, but it'd be like beating a dead horse since they already are so far behind the other acts and are coming last regardless.
With Romania, I mentioned that there were aspects that I liked and acknowledged as a good effort before mentioning the issues with the production. That's why I didn't go lower than a 5. I could have spelled out all my specific reasoning but it would have made the video several times longer and quite boring.
And this is still the work of professionals who are doing something at a level that I have not. A certain level of respect is required. That's why most of them get at least one ranking that's 7 or above, because those performances meet a professional standard in at least one area. I have no interest in tearing them down simply for my own tastes and preferences.
