In the aftermath of the chaos of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, there are serious concerns about the show's future. Today we're taking a look at the highs and lows of the turbulent contest that was Malmö 2024.

If Eurovision is just about show, music and a friendly get together without any politics, Russia wasn‘t disqualified and banned since 2022. Point.
1) Russia started the war, Israel didn't.
2) Russian artists support the war, support the invasion of another country, support deaths and displacement of people. Israeli artists, including Netta, Noa Kirel and Eden Golan support their country, but they don't support war, they support bringing hostages back. So that's the reason Russian artists shouldn't be tolerated.
3) People are too blind. Russia is the most homophobic country in Europe, even if they didn't invade Ukraine, they would still withdraw someday.
Invading another country is a loud signal that you're actually _not_ interested in a friendly get together, sooo....
Eurovision is part of the European idea, which is based on peace and cooperation. Russia currently doesn't qualify for that.
(Well, Israel doesn't qualify for it as well with how its government is warmongering... Self-defence after October 7th last year is fine, but Israel's government is going too far. But I still feel sorry for how Eden Golan got pulled into this whole mess. As an artist, she deserved better.)
Russia was supposed to take part after invasion of Ukraine, the EBU removed the Broadcaster because they broke rules, what the Israeli broadcaster did not do and also because a LOT of broadcasters threatens to cancel the participation if Russia took part, what did not happened with Israel, again, this is not a Nations or Government Contest , is a Broadcaster Contest, die to the Rule book the Israeli broadcaster had all the rights to take part, do I still condemn what’s happening Yes, but KAN has nothing to do with it ….. its a difficult conversation what I think will happen a couple of more times in the future with other countries
Russia is banned from the EBU due to not honoring having a free press, therefor noe beeing qualified to participate.

He was not a deserving winner in the slightest. The song is good but the win is even more questionable than Loreen's win was. At least she came 2nd in the televote, Nemo came 5th.
@@lucaswallo8127 televote means nothing, it's all political and alliance votes, look who came second this year in the televote, yet the song has some of the lowest listens on Spotify. Nemo sang the song to perfection every time, while running, jumping and balancing on a platform. I would like to see anyone else try and attempt that.

The EBU has messed up and are not at all contrite about messing up. There needs to be consequences. Netherlands and Ireland should withdraw and others should follow.

Thank you so much for your reporting. I am new here, but i clicked immediately when I saw the thumbnail. I was watching Eurovision live from my living room in Germany and was shocked when the televoting points for Israel were announced. The whole thing was so loaded with a strange feeling of tension and I wondered how all of these bits of information, the protests, the booing, the disqualification and the „hidden“ messaging in costumes would all be looked at in retrospect. Thank you for putting it all together and doing it with this precision and respectful tone!!
I hoped for this years Eurovision to be especially uniting and a chance to catch a breather in the light of Europes right-wing movements. It all seems quite strange at the minute and not at all how light it felt growing up in this united continent.
Buuut, you wished for comments that lift the mood a bit and im afraid this was a downer up to this point so let me end on saying thank you again, for publishing this and reminding me that other people exist that think about Europe and work to protect it! I definitely subscribed and am looking forward to all things coming!

I'm confused. Why were you shocked at the result of televoting? Cause if you are shocked to find out that most people do *not* buy into hateful rhetoric and childish bullying, and will step up to defend a 19 year old who's being harassed and threatened at a music contest, you need to get out of your echo chamber.
United by Music is itself a political stance - and a good one. Eurovision should be open about its politics and lean into them, rather than pretending to be apolitical (itself a political position, and an inherently deceptive one). Thank you for a clear and excellent video on this year's fiasco, and I appreciate especially that you highlighted that Martin Österdahl would not have made his decisions in isolation, which is definitely true but something I hadn't considered before.

Integrating politics would permanently ruin the contest, especially considering that one side of the political spectrum would be significantly overrepresented.
@@lucaswallo8127 The politics are unavoidable and are already part of the contest. It is better to be honest than deceptive about it imo.
As much as I love Eurovision (I have been a fan since... ugh, 2013), I think that if it needs to restore its reputation and continue existing, it needs serious reforms, because what we saw this year basically represents the beginning of the end. I'm not saying there is no contest next year, and I'm also not saying that the contest WILL end, but I'm saying it CAN end if nothing is done to fix its very obvious flaws. Also, no matter how much they try to hide it, Eurovision is a political event and always has been, simply because of the idea of a country representing itself. That is an undisputable fact, and it also affects things like the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. It's probably a better idea to brand it as "politically neutral" than "apolitical". Also, seeing the disrepute Israel caused in this year's event, it goes without saying that they probably need to get suspended from the EBU in a similar way to Belarus, so that they can probably rethink their choices when it comes to how they can and should represent themselves at Eurovision. A similar suspension should be applied to Azerbaijan for its history with cheating at the contest.

To be fair, Baby Lasagna got all the support Croatia and Croatians could give it. A full scale Lasagnamania broke free once a reserve entry turned out to be real good, fun and also a very humble and friendly guy.
Unlike Israel, Croatian support was fed bottom up though.
Another nice point for Croatia is that they don't seem to mind not winning all that much. Unlike the Swedish singer who got back home as a winner and nobody cared, Baby Lasagna was welcomed as a hero, joined a free concert on main Zagreb square right after touching ground and sold out three concerts within hours of announcing them. He's also opened this year's Exit, which puts him on a pathway to live comfortably from his music in years to come.
Great video, Stuart. I think you were able to summarize everything that needs to be said about this edition of Eurovision as well as the future. I agree that these next couple of months that precede the preparation of next year's contest are crucial and will most definitely define the future editions. I hope they don't try to brush the clear problems under the rug and pretend nothing happened. I hope broadcasters are determined and push for change. Lastly, I agree that the whole theme and presentation of Eurovision as an "apolitical event" or "united by music" needs to be revised. They are selling the product as something that is the complete opposite of the general public's perception. Whilst I understand that the EBU do it to discourage political demonstrations in an "entertainment" space, it backfires almost every year and hurts the integrity of the contest. As you said, this year was the biggest example of that happening, but it happens every year with jury voting for neighbors, block voting suspicions, etc... I also hope that in the near future (not necessarily next year) they come up with a clear contingency plan for European conflict. The way they do it now is not transparent at all and creates a lot of double standards

It's going to be a challenge, and my feeling is that whatever changes get introduced still won't be enough. But we've crossed a point of no return now. They clearly can't keep going like this.
While not letting the Croatian song win might or might not be something to talk about, disqualification of Joost is a proverbial one drop too much.
There is no going back to "business as usual" after this. Either the heads will roll and serious changes will happen, or the Eurovision is dead to me.

artists that participate in EUROPE-WIDE (at last years even WORLDWIDE) contest MUST BE ready for all of the activities for them to take part, not only go on stage, perform, go off stage and relax in greenroom and drink champagne

Excellent point about each country celebrating its artist's accomplishments. Going back to ESC 2022, I would say Cornelia Jakobs (Sweden) and Konstrakta (Serbia) definitely did extremely well in spite of not winning. The UK definitely got a shot in the arm as well as confirmation that they can get votes when they send good acts/songs.
And while Armenia came in 20th, Rosa Linn definitely overshadows a lot. It was over 2 years before I heard Duncan Lawrence's "Arcade" over any broadcast in the US be it radio, store music loops, etc. But not even six months after Turin I was at work and heard the opening notes of "Snap". My coworkers looked at me like I was from another planet when I said "They're taking us to Armenia" and had to explain Eurovision. Ironically a lot of Eurovision artists are played on our music station at work.
Edit: And the "it's not political" thing about ESC is a farce. The aforementioned Konstrakta's "In Corpre Sano" is a political song. It's an issue-based on versus an intranational or international one. It's a song about universal health care for everyone. And if we punish countries for invading, etc. why wasn't Azerbaijan punished as Russia was for its blockade of the Lachin Corridor? Considering numerous countries as well as human rights organizations called it "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide" as the people being blockaded were ethnically Armenian, they should have been booted from last year's.
Not to mention sometimes the Artist's names get changed for political reasons. Like how "Elle & Nikki" of Azerbaijan are actually Eldar & Nigar. But the latter's name, especially when mispronounced with a short "i" sound, sounds extremely close to what most of us know as the "n-word".
In my high school media studies course, one of the earliest lessons is about the eight concepts of media. The sixth concept is that all media has political and social implications. So you can imagine how my adult self felt when learning about Eurovision for the first time, hearing people say that it's "not political", and shortly after getting an earful about how Russia was robbed of a "deserved" win in 2016! 😂

Great video as always. And there's one thing I miss in this conversation: TikTok. The rules in the press center have changed in the last years and not in a good way. No live streaming, no reaction video at the center.... For a long time ESC was this camp event with a lot of crazy people who wanted to invest a lot of money and free time for their two weeks of pleasure. This was (for me) part of the charm. Public broadcasting including social media. But not all platforms are suitable for such an event.
I understand the event is becoming so expensive that it needs sponsoring but 'Could we start again, please'?

I wasn't around in 2016, but all that I saw in retrospect of how many people thought of Ukraine's win, they were quite nasty about it as well. After the full scale invasion in 2022 people have been kinder when talking about 2016's winner as they now understand why that song had meaning.
Since no geopolitical conflict is alike, people's reactions will also be different. But even outside these years, every year in Eurovision is political. That's why trying to restrict certain messages will always lead to problems and contradictions.
It's amusing to watch you accuse Ukraine of being politicized in Eurovision, while you all remain so blind. So, it was okay for you when Russia, after taking Ossetia from Georgia, won Eurovision and put a TANK and a MILITARY PLANE on stage for the opening show. Then, through few year, they brought a Ukrainian performer to show "oh, we are such brothers, everything is fine with us." And then, because of their invasion in 2014, Ukraine couldn't participate in 2015 because there was no possibility due to Russian aggression, and at the same time, their Polina Gagarina sang about "peace" and how millions of voices are united-typical Russian hypocrisy. And when Jamala won and Eurovision was held in Ukraine, Russians decided to send a woman in a wheelchair who had legal issues with Ukraine, and of course, Ukraine didn't let her in. Russians did all this so that people would think "oh, Ukraine is so bad." They did it on purpose, agitating the world against Ukraine since 2014. And no one talked about it, everyone always want to say about how “bad” Ukraine.
The EBU should be joining of all commercial broadcasting in Europe and around the world for watching of Eurovision Songs contest in commercial broadcasting. For example, the public broadcasting in Russia has been suspended by the EBU and Eurovision since Russia invasion in Ukraine, so commercial broadcasters in Russia are obliged to broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest on commercial broadcasters in Russia.
At the end and I said it in several videos on the subject, the reason the competition was as problematic as it was was is due to the fact that almost everyone chose not to concentrate on the competition itself. Instead they decided to introduce a political protest and I will explain war is a complicated business in this war there is pain and destruction for both the Israelis and the Palestinians as soon as people who don't care about the competition introduce a political protest and a discussion about a war that has nothing to do with the Eurovision on such a huge scale and the artists are cooperating with them it is clear that we will reach where we reached in the competition and whay
The atmosphere and behavior towards the Israeli delegation on the part of other delegations was very unpleasant, which produced an unpleasant reaction from the Israeli delegation as well
As I said before, war is a complicated business, if you want to prevent similar cases in the future, the EBU could decide that every country that is at war cannot participate and the reasons to whay the war started do not change (this includes Ukraine, Israel and Russia)

Thank you for speaking up. A lot of good has emerged from this ESC 2024, I am Croatian, so it’s obvious I mean Baby Lasagna. ESC really launched his career, he performers everywhere, his schedule is booked😻
I still believe BL would have won if it weren’t for Israel (I calculated 28 public pts Israel took from Croatia and I truly believe jury pts would look a bit different). But Nemo are deserved winners, and I get angry when Croatians are blaming them. The ones who listened The Code afterwards, regretedly admitted it’s an amazing peace of music.
Finally I want to say beside Baby Lasagna’s songs, I still listen Zorra, (nendest)…., Luktelk, Zari, Europapa, Doomsday Blue, La Noia, Mon Amour, Teresa&Maria, Grito, Before the Party is Over, even Caliente, Dos Extranos, Se Quien Soy, Il Capolavoro, polar bear song(😂)…. - this ESC season brought life to incredible songs and artists and that’s why we love it and continue to follow despite everything😃
I’m still livid about Joost’s qualification and so heartbroken for him. They took something so special, so personal, away from him. I feel powerless, here in Australia, and I want a resolution that is fair.

When the Lithuanian contestant states that he wished he hadn’t qualified for the final, something is very seriously wrong.
But Moroccan Oil being the major sponsor means Israel gets a free pass because they are an Israeli company.
I have a small RUclips Eurovision channel. I don’t appear on camera, I make compilations of performances past and present. This was my 30th year watching Eurovision and I’m angry, devastated and so confused. How did we come to this?
Sorry, my comment is a bit muddled, so many emotions.
I would say that Martin was handed a 65 year old fish that had been rotting for a long time. That's why I believe he shouldn't be villainized by default.
I watch his 2nd semi-final performance several times a day (I sing it to my 7 month old because it's about a papa) and I still tear up at the conclusion thinking about how much it meant to him to be there and how foully he was treated by the EBU. I'm so angry on his behalf.

They wanted to film Joost and the crew for an Instagram story. This is how important! 🤔 An instagram story... There was however the agreement Joost and his friends wouldn't be filmed and they could go directly to the Green Room. They had only 6 minutes from the end of the performance to being filmed live in the Green Room for the televotes, showing a happy face. Because this was the last act of the semi final they had to be quick. Joost needed the time while he was rushing to the Green Room to get himself emotionally together after his performance dedicated to his parents. When you watch the moment The Netherlands delegation appears in the Green Room, there is only Joost with his two best friends Appie and Martijn holding him. He looks devastated, not happy.

Yes, Eurovision needs to wake up and adapt. Politics will never go away. we know that, THEY know that. Whether it be Massiel in 1969, Kalush in 2022 or Eden Golan in 2024, these things will happen because Eurovision represents the zeitgeist of Europe at any particular period in its' history. It has done since 1956 and should be treasured for doing so.
I am glad that an independent body is assessing the aftermath of the 2024 contest. Maybe some changes can come from this. It's not just about the artist safety and respect. The whole contest needs an overhaul. When was the last time the voting system was changed? 1975. The 12-1 points were introduced that year in a contest with 18 participants. Grow that to 26 and the chance of getting any points at all is drastically reduced. One of the greatest shames of modern ESC is countries/entrants getting zero points. It is shameful, These artists have spent six months of their lives dedicating themselves to one three minute performance..
Only being top 10 out of 26 is humiliating, it's a thing that can destroy careers. ESC needs to address this. Is the "douze points" so sacred that they can't think of maybe giving points the the top 15/20 songs? No-one should be humiliated with a zero points score

The bar is quite low for any changes, so better to focus on the ones that matter most.
The matter what the outcome for The Netherlands that may go on their side.....it is now too late for Joost Klein, this was his chance that was taken away from him.

Another sign of how botched Israel's televote score was - outside of Israel that song isn't charting high nor doing impressive streaming numbers like Rim Tim Tagi Dim, The Code, Mon Amour, Doomsday Blue, La Noia and Teresa & Maria are (oh and let's not forget the song that got disqualified from the final is doing extraordinary numbers throughout Europe). You would think a song that got 2nd in the televote based on merits would be charting high like other songs in the top 10 in the televote would. Weird isn't it?
There have absolutely been huge issues behind the scenes for a while now and everything boiled over this year. It's sad that it was at the expense of artists this year but now that everything is out in the open maybe there will be a crackdown in 2025. I think Switzerland seems no nonsense about hosting and at the very least will do a better job than SVT/Sweden (idk how much of everything was in their control but they definitely fucked up in some areas)

I don't have too many criticisms of SVT to be honest. Beyond some minor technical hiccups, which could have happened to any large production, it was technically sound. The biggest issue was by the time the final rolled around the illusion was completely broken. The hosts had a hard time selling the scripted segments because it all felt so insincere. So much was out of SVT's control.
I hope that Switzerland can do a good job next year to save ESC since Switzerland started this contest in the first place 👍😊❤️🇨🇭🎉🎶🙏

Nemos performance was amazing, it had everything. people saying they only won cause they're non-binary are just plain wrong. Still, there were so many other amazing tracks, which I believe were also great and I hope the EBU finally learns their lesson. It still seems like the Jury has a bias against metal acts, and wtf is that score for Norway and Estonia.

Fantastic video and amazingly well said. Agree with everything you said and thanks for laying it out so well and clearly. The veneer of Eurovision being non-political shattered a while back but this was it’s final death. I was absolutely shocked they still kept that line in the song about it being non-political, surely they knew how bad that would look. I’ve stayed away from Eurovision content this year so apologies if you’ve already discussed this, but what are your thoughts on the Moroccanoil sponsorship? Even though it’s not state owned, Israel was effectively funding the contest by virtue of the government being a phone-call away from their sponsorship being pulled. Maybe all the Palestinian censorship could also have been under implicit or explicit pressure from the sponsor. There were also comments about Germany putting pressure, don’t know how true, to keep them in the contest.

About Moroccanoil, it's definitely a thought I have had. So far, RTV Slovenija have been the only broadcaster that has raised this question with the EBU. I really doubt we'll get a clear answer on that, but all the more reason to keep asking if there are more shenanigans in the future.
About the "non-political" line in that song, I actually think that there were a bunch of digs at the EBU from the writers of the show this year, and that felt like one of them. Another felt like when they did the regular segment promoting the official DVD, which always feels so awkward in the age of streaming. The way that they joked about the other primitive technologies felt like they were making fun of having to do that obligatory plug. There were a few other moments as well but those are the only ones that come to mind 😁

Technically Nemo had the best song.
As mentioned the song blended so many different music genres beautifully.
That is why the juries voted Nemo so high. That is what they judge.
In terms of performance and stage presence/vibe, baby lasagna were by far the best. That is why the audience voted for them.
As you were there to observe much of this first-hand, this is a great thoughtful summation. Yes, there are questions about how Eurovision will look going forward. Hopefully there will be a way to minimize how the politics can have such an obvious and negative effect, while emphasizing how the music and the performers should remain as the real stars of the show. That's actually why most viewers tune in, so hopefully this will be their guiding motivation for change.

The EBU has an Israeli company as sponsor. That is evidence enough who has priority for them. Can't risk that sponsor money.

There’s one possibility I think differently and that’s according to what happened with Joost.
I do believe (although we will never know) that his disqualification did have something to do with the press conference.
I will explain why.
His “Why not” question and the fact he hides behind his flag, which they saw as disrespect for Eden made them very angry.
Good to know is that hiding behind a flag or scarf he always does when gets emotional.
The press conference was right after the incident and all though it didn’t look sympathetic, most Dutch saw the signal)
After Joost talking to the police everyone was certain problems were solved. The next day he went to the arena. The Dutch sign and flag 🇳🇱 were reinstalled at the dressingroom and Joost was about to do the flag-parade rehearsal. Then, all of a sudden he hears he is not allowed to do the rehearsal that afternoon. You can see the stress (body-language) during the flag parade rehearsal. Also he always shows a🫶. This time he made a ‘triangle’ with his fingers. It’s the sign of feeling unsafe.
I really believe the Israeli sponsor blackmailed EBU to disqualify Joost because they had a grudge against him from the beginning and were extremely pissed at him after the press conference. This combined with event with the camera woman, gave them the stick to hit him with.
I understand this issue cannot be connected because it isn’t a fact and hasn’t been proven but in line with all crazy stuff that happened by the Israeli delegation and even mingling by their government, it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Also a crazy decision: after disqualification of Joost, Dutch Flags and European flags were banned.
When you have so many problems, also with other artist, delegations, emergency meetings, I would say that one of your least concerns. A few fans who spend a lot of money to go to Malmo with a 🇳🇱 or 🇪🇺.
Last but not least:
As a Dutch (who worked in the music and tv industry) I know AVROTROS would have never backed up Joost, or anyone else if they would have had doubts! This fact and Joost his kind empathic character is the reason many people and (Eurovision)artists still stand by him.
Needless to say but if Joost in fact would appear to be guilty of any crime/ inexcusable behaviour off course he and AVROTROS have to deal with it.

I will say that for me, what saved my impression of the contest this year was seeing the outpouring of love and support the artists gave each other, especially behind the scenes. I do hope the EBU takes a good hard look at itself this year.

In October 2023 one of many thoughts that I had back then was… what will happens to next year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Cause it was so obvious that we will having a Eurovision season that we had.
And reminds me a little bit of 2022 season.
BUT EVERYTHING TURNED TO BE MORE CHAOTIC THAT I COULD IMAGINE!
I’m so sad about the performers, artists, team production and crew, the delegations and also the public living that IN MALMÖ and us eurofans and public in general. Cause Europeans folks you don’t deserved a catastrophic show like this year. And I k! This is even our fault neither performers or artists at all!
When this year started I was so excited for this cause I’m proudly eurofan BUT at some point heading to may due dates contest schedule was so stressful and divided and hypocritically cause the motto it is and will be (as we known) “UNITED BY MUSIC”. And EBU, Martin and some people do the mindless and disrespectful things that was so wrong to watch or follow it. And that makes so tense environment for just one beautiful touchy and funny song European (plus MENA and Australia 🇦🇺) contest.
At the end of the day… I’m not hopeful for the 2025 contest but I know that (I hope so) I will be legit wrong. Cause cmon will be Switzerland 🇨🇭 !

I feel so bad for what the artists had to go through this year and what some of them are still going through as a result of THAT fly in the ointment of this year's edition.
I also feel so bad for Sweden as they did put on a great show. If only the EBU had made the right decision in the first place, none of this years debacle would have happened.
Some of the good vibes from this year were:
1. Seeing a well-deserved win for Nemo from Switzerland.
2. The camaraderie and wonderful friendships between the artists.
3. The sheer volume of good songs this year's edition of ESC brought. It was a very strong year music-wise.
4. I am extremely thankful for discovering new artists and have already purchased tickets to see a few of them live later this year. Bambie Thug and Gåte are a couple of them.

I have unpopular opinion. It should be made clear, does the country , that is in war, is allowed to participate or not. But right now its double standard : Israel is allowed, Russia is not allowed. And also we have seen that country, that is in war , is having profit on it on competition. Ukraine war started on 2016, Jamala won. War escalated 2022 , Kalush Orchestra won. Coincidence?? If Eurovision is not political, Russian singers should be on competition also.
Some people have suggested that countries that are in armed conflicts should be prohibited from competing. That of course would mean that we would lose Ukraine, which doesn't seem fair because they are in the defensive position in this war. Israel claims to defending itself, but the level of brutality and destruction make it abundantly clear that it goes far beyond self defense. Lawyers have suggested that it cannot claim to be defending itself against a people that it has been occupying for decades.
At the end of the day, you have to ask if it's worth it to lose countries if the show is inevitably political? Personally, I don't think so. I think what's more important when deciding if a country should be banned is how they are benefiting from their participation. Although the EBU would deny it, they gave them a platform for propaganda, which they openly used, while they are facing charges in violation of the Genocide Convention. That's in the history books now.

1. I remember the propaganda signs should be banned in Eurovision. But Ukraine team had T-shirts on, that had political message.
2. Ukraine has "sailed" on victim ship since Jamala. They have sent a lot of songs about war, trying to gather symphaty votes. 3.Winner have to hold next year competition. Ukraine wasnt able to do it because of war, so UK had to take over. 4.Ukrainian men have mobilization order, same time Kalusch Orchestra had team of bunch of young men, who should have been protecting their home, not taking part of singing show...
5. Russian singers most likely have nothing to do with war, I would say, 99% of them probably are very sad about the situation, but their hands are tied.
But Russia would send only pro-Putin artists to Eurovision! These are people who justify and support Putin's crimes against humanity. Do you really want to give this worldwide platform artists who stand for f*scism and dictatorship?
Yes, there are many artists in Russia who are against Putin. But you can be sure that these artists would never, never make it to the ESC!

In regards to the winner, I think Nemo is a deserved winner, however, it wasnt a fair fight. If you have to make up for a almost 200 pts difference, then you never really had a chance, did you? That sends a message to everyone else: landslide the jury vote, and the trophy is yours. It completely craps on people at home wasting money to see their favorite win, and getting nothing in return. Doesnt seem balanced to me.
Now, about everything else... I hardly think anything will change. If it does, it will only be after a significant viewership drop (which I will be contributing to) from next years event. Two disasters in a row will be difficult to put a spin on. I wish the best to the artists and fans and the worst to the EBU.

I must say, having just discovered your channel Yours is the very best analysis I have come across. I agree with virtually everything you said and I also learned of some wider issues.
I’ve been a Eurovision fan for many years and yes, it’s always been undeniably political, because although many people get uncomfortable about politics, it’s impossible for this kind of event not to be political. And in my view, that’s broadly fine. Sadly though, the now widespread western proposition, constantly trailed out by pro Israeli sources is that criticism of Israel equals anti semitism. This often has dire consequences for critics of Israel in Europe. Criticism of obvious genocide and anti semitism, have now been successfully conflated into one idea. This is Big Politics and big business at work, so it won’t end soon. But, the dissent against this must force EBU to be consistent, at least in pushing back against the bully boy Israeli tactics. If not the contest is doomed. Like Russia, Israel should be excluded from entering, if not expelled from the EBU.
I did wonder if the juries had gone all in for Switzerland, which was a worthy winner btw, in order to counter the obvious televote tampering by Israel?
As a final point, did you notice that in the green room reveal in the final, how the front runners were all alongside eachother in the front row, with like first class booths? It looked to me like the organisers were revealing the jury result at least..

That's an interesting observation about the green room. One thing that you could consider: based on other aspects of how the show is run, particularly the running order, we know that the producers have some sense of who is most likely to win. Everyone has access to the betting odds, and most often the frontrunner ends up winning (this was the first year in a while that the winner was lower than first in the odds to win).
So it could be that they were placed up front to make it easier to guide the winner down to the stage for the reprise. It doesn't mean that there couldn't have been a surprise winner that was all the way in the back. But I would imagine that the production was probably trying to reduce the obstacles in any way possible. Just a guess though 😉

I’m not a conspiracy junkie, I only felt it could leave the organisers open to even more accusations, as if it weren’t already getting rinsed….

I don't care who's right and who's wrong. Eurovision should be completely void of politics. And going forward the EBU should be even stricter when it comes to enforcing this rule. Ukrainian victory out of pitty in 2022 has set a precedent that Israel tried to recreate this year. This is hurting the reputation of the contest more than any joke entry ever could.
I want Israel to keep participating, but i also want them to behave like a normal, healthy country that doesn't feel the need to prove a point in the competition with air condition.
Eden Golan did nothing wrong so i wholeheartedly condemn the booing of her. And unfortunately the anti-booing technology is necessary.
Having said that, i do support Palestine's right to exist and I'm happy that my country recently recognized it. I'm only mentioning this because i don't want to be labeled as pro-this side or pro-that side.
Joost's disqualification was very unfortunate but that's what happens when two overly sensitive people clash. Lastly i want to give my two cents on what S10 said and experienced.. now i know I'll sound completely insensitive but maybe The Netherlands should stop sending people with fragile metal health to eurovision. For their own sake. Doing eurovision is very demanding and you need to be in the right state of mind.
In order for the show to be completely void of politics, the songs would need to compete as songs/artists without the country flags 🤷🏻♂️

UEFA Euro Championship and the Olympic games are coming soon and the concept there is the same. People are representing their countries but the event itself is for the athletes.
The only similarity is that the funding of athletes and the funding of state broadcasters is dependent on government policies. But the taxpayers money that they are spending belongs to all citizens anyway.
Nemo is not a deserving winner though. The people were very split about Kaarija and Loreen last year and she was SECOND in televote. Nemo is barely 5th and if Joost was allowed to compete it would be even lower. As you also said alot of artists brought their A game and the competition was rough then the jury forcefeeds this with so many points? I don't buy it

Why did you not speak of the EBU's claim to change the Israeli song's lyrics, so it wouldn't be political? They weren't allowed to wear the yellow Bring-Them-Home pins, Eden wasn't even allowed to wear yellow color at all. The claim to avoid the politicization around the Gaza war by the EBU was on all sides, it wasn't just silencing the pro-Palestine side as you try to claim. You ignoring that is extremely false and one-sided.

We've talked about the lyrical changes in the past. No matter how sanitized the lyrics were, the context was still abundantly clear. Everyone knows what they are singing about so it was always going to unearth the world's feelings about the ongoing genocide and lead to problems. And again, the non-political contest claim doesn't exist, so including Israel at this time is a clear political decision.
With respect to the yellow pins, I have only seen that the spokesperson was told not to wear it, but that was requested by KAN themselves, not the EBU.

Israel's entry exploits the real pain and suffering of October 7th to ignore 75 years of history that lead to that horrific violence. The government uses that pain to justify the brutal murder of Palestinian civilians, which has brought them to face charges against the Genocide Convention at the world's highest court.

It bothered me that you did not present the exact and complex situation that is happening this year. The Israeli delegation suffered threats, curses and violence of all kinds. Rocks were thrown with the aim of hitting a 20-year-old girl. Where is the sensitivity that a girl needs to deal with such amounts of bullshit? Where are the women's organizations to protect her? Where are you as bloggers to relate to your voice and the artist she is? Why delete a person because he is who he is? Before politics there are people here. and made silence on Eden. It's a shame. You posted a video with a lot of information.. but all the missing information about the behavior towards Israel was mostly removed. Especially your criticism of the society and the violent citizens towards it. The countries did not vote for Israel not because they did not like the song. These are because of the protest. At this moment the allegations of misconduct behind the scenes are being investigated. The only examples of poor behaviour directed at Israel that we've seen are what Marina and Joost did during the press conference, which I mentioned in the video. It was passive-aggressive behavior, but it was not harassment, and it doesn't match the description of events that KAN told to the media. And so there's only so much that can be commented on at this point.
With regards to their treatment by the public, any real threats of violence is unacceptable. But we still don't have a clear picture of what the real threats were. Yes, security was increased, but the presence of security doesn't tell us about any real attempts of violence. And as we have seen, the depictions of the protests were distorted by Israeli media.
I haven't heard anything about rocks thrown. If that happened, it definitely didn't happen at the venue. Given how limited their delegations movement was, I can't imagine where else this would have happened.
And so I don't know what factual information I could have provided in order to portray what you described. 🤷🏻♂️

If you tell a Dutchy that something is going to happen, they will ask why & conversely when you say something will not take place of course the question will be "why not?"
