G'day ladies and gents, Today we'll be taking a look at one of the two new Bodenplatte aircraft added to the latest patch of IL-2, The Mk.IXe Spitfire. I hope you enjoy! Note: I have had some slight technical difficulties with my microphone so voice audio quality may not be up to scratch, It will be correct by the next video. In his excellent book The Big Show, Pierre Clostermann wrote something like this after his transfer to the Tempest V: “ The Germans carefully avoided taking on the Spit, knowing its value in a dogfight.” He goes on to say many of the newest generation of German fighters, such as the D9 and K4, had the necessary speed to do that. Much late-war tactical air combat in the areas depicted in Battle of Bodenplatte took place at low-medium altitudes. Here the Tempest was at its best, equaling or exceeding the performance of the German aircraft in many areas, such as turn rate. Clostermann goes on to say how it annoyed the Spit pilots greatly when it was pointed out that the cruising speed of the Tempest was around the same as the maximum speed of the Spit :D I highly recommend that book, my father gave me his old hardback copy when I was 12, and 38 years later I still re-read it periodically. Some of the chapters are very relevant to BoP, such as ‘Tempest versus Focke-Wulf’ vs D9s, and ‘Tempest versus Messerschmitt’ vs K4s or G10s, from memory. There is also a comprehensive chapter on Bodenplatte.
Jesus. Utter rubbish. Berg was a wing commander and all wing commanders were allowed the privilege of using their initials, whatever their nationality. Notice JE-J, James (Johnny) Edgar Johnson. Honestly, where do you people get this crap from? Why would it even say RAF? Do you think all RAF fighters had RAF written on them? If he wasn't a wing commander it would be the two letter squadron codes and the single letter for the individual aircraft. It's not rocket science. And anyway, Berg's Spitfire IX did not have clipped wings, very few did, and the Norwegian markings were applied post-War for the Norwegian Wing's homecoming.
Can't remember under which video I got all the recommendations for military museums to visit, but I think I went to all of them, and I don't regret visiting a single one. Especially RAAF Museum and the Liberator. Thank you very much, people I can not recall and Magz
Beautiful. Voice audio was fine for me, did not notice any change. Can´t wait for Bodenplatte but till then....Hornet release hype is on its peak this week. XD God, waht a memorable summer this is going to be. Good times, good times, I say!
Finally, something dutch. I only don't seem to remember that no 322 sqn was from the Netherlands East Indies. I thought it was based at England during the war and that it was transferred after the war to the RNLAF (Royal Netherlands Airforce). I do know that the pilots from the dutch East Indies, that escaped to unoccupied territory were regrouped in Australia and that two squadrons were set up. Two with a b25 Mitchell (no. 18 NEI and no. 119 NEI) and one with p40n Warhawks, that later operated p51d Mustangs (no. 120).
Well, it's nice that at least one of the skins was actually for a British pilot. Btw, the two Australian aircraft were Mk VIIIs, not IXs. Without checking my references the American ones could be Mk VIIIs as well. So much for accuracy.
Yeeeeeees two free french camos for the spitty. :D I really hope the Tempest will get Pierre Clostermann's "Le Grand Charles". (nice to have his Mk.IX tho)
Just set it wrong and was then too busy getting shot or trying not to be shot at to correct it. Worked well enough to get the angle so I just needed to eyeball the distance (hence the number of bursts before the kill).
I've become obsessive compulsive with my radiators (melted one too many engines over the years :P) I expect I will with the Gyro as well with a little more time with it.
I am not sure where now (maybe it was 1Cs own video), but as I understood it, you are able to drop the racks for the bombs too if you wish. Which would bring the Spit back to its performance level if none of those things were ever put on the plane.
The climb rate are for combat power, but i know u know that. From what i can find through google searching the maximum climb rate at sea level @+18boost 3000rpm are 25m/s. That is pretty darn good, i love the new spitfire. I wonder how the g-14 climbs at full power.
Great vid Mags. Just a couple of points I'm confused about. Firstly the Gibbes "RAF" skin. Isn't that the legendary Bobby Gibbes, RAAF, as suggested by the roundels? Also, isn.t that a MkVIII tail on that MkIX?
It is yes, At the time however it was considered to be an RAF Squadron operating out of NT rather than an RAAF squadron. It's a technicality but accurate. And yes I think they did get the modeling on the tale incorrect but it's the first release on a year long development, I expect it will be corrected before release.
A skilled A-5 pilot is still going to walk all over this thing. I found its performance in game to be only slightly better than the Mk. Vb. It does have substantially more firepower than the Mk. Vb, and is a lot of fun to fly. Any German pilot that tries to turn with it is going to have problems. That being said; they can still win so long as they maintain a wide margin energy advantage, and stay out of the way of the guns. These are my predictions after fighting the AI. It will be interesting to see how it performs against live pilots in multiplayer.
yeah at low altitudes the speed isn't that much improved, but at higher altitudes it's significantly better than the Mk V, so far in IL-2 MP this isn't reflected much but maybe with the other upcoming high altitude planes we might see more high alt combat in the future.
I Fly Central fancy seeing you here central! I’ll bet that with most even-ish match ups, it’s down to which pilot uses his aircrafts advantage the most effectively. If an A-5 driver lets his energy bleed, he’s done for, if a Spit fights to passing, allowing the A-5 to gain the upper hand, he too is done for. It will make for some entertaining fights I’m sure.
Gopnik This isn't war thunder. The engagement's are over a much larger area, with no icons, and with more accurate FM's. I have flown both of these aircraft, and can say without a shadow of a doubt that the experienced 190 pilot will slaughter this thing. Only the inexperienced will get slow enough, and stay engaged long enough in a losing fight to get ahot down. It is nowhere close to fast enough to keep up with a 190 at speed.
I've yet to land without spinning out at the end with either of the spitfires currently in the game. Good to know I'm not the only having issues with this.
I'm really considering getting this game. New to flight sim games and my only experience is war thunder sim battles. Does anyone know if this game will go on sale on steam? How much different does the FM feel compared to war thunder. Finally, is it easy to find multiplayer games and how long do games last ? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Hi Magz - Just wanted to let you know, that you might have an audio "problem" at least in this video (only watched till 1:50 so far). The louder parts of your speach get "distorted" (dont know how else to put it - I'm neither an audiophile nore is english my native language). Seems to me you might be a little to close to your mic maybe?! Or you might want to look into limiting max recording volume, as far as I know there are solutions for that out there.
This is the first of the western front expansions, While a Griffin Spit won't have fit in this particular expansion it seems like 777 is intending to do three expansions for each theater. If one of the next expansions moves on into 1945 I would expect to see at least one Griffin powered model make an appearance.
Technically the Mk XIV would have fit for Bodenplatte, but the IX was much more common so the devs went with that. Similar to how we don't have the Bf 109 G-10 or Fw 190 A-9, the Bf 109 K-4, Bf 109 G-14 and Fw 190 A-8 were the more common variants.
No.32 Onebad The numbers present during the Operation Bodenplatte location and timeframe were around 20 or so squadrons of Spiftire Mk IX vs 5 or so squadrons of Mk XIV if i'm correct. These being mostly late 1944 variants of the Mk IX with the pointed tail, e type wing and gyroscopic gunsight as we got in game (there are a couple things missing like automatic RPM linked with throttle and 150 octane fuel but hopefully they come in future as the community is requesting them) About the 109s there are detailed numbers, of the around 400 Bf 109s serviceable the day before the attack, around 260 were G-14s, (120 of them G-14/AS), 90 K-4s and only 50 were G-10s Sometimes the general production date and numbers arent representative of a given battle or campaign. For example in Battle of Kuban the standard Yak is the razorback Yak-7B type even though for quite some months before the bubble canopy variants were introduced, its just that the Kuban units still used those older planes.
In the time period of Bodenplatte no, it could however be added as a modification at a later time when the western front expansions for Great Battles widen the time frame.
Not with the current implementation. The version we have in game is an E wing variant but only has the C wing configuration (e wing allowed for modifications to forward firing armament or larger ammo stowage using the second cannon bay). This version was not modified in this manner (technically the current version should be marked Mk.IXc not e.) If we receive the e wing then the performance modification should also be added. For the moment it's early access and the first Bodenplatte patch to boot, we'll have to wait and see what changes the devs make as development advances heading into the Bodenplatte release but for the moment I am not concerned.
It would and you are correct, I expect the performance mod and the e wing mod may be added later once more Bodenplatte aircraft have become available for this reason. As I said, first release of the early access so I am unconcerned, Bodenplatte isn't due for release for some time so plenty can change between now and then.
I think one of the dev's said in a live Q&A on TS that the dev window for bodenplatte was for release in fall 2019. They tend to make things available for early access though as they are ready, which is why we have the spit IX and 109 G14 already.
Not too many skins depicting British Spitfires there. Even Johnnie Johnson’s is depicted as Canadian and was most definitely British. Not Canadian. Still if it makes people feel better to think that the Brits had everybody else fighting for them who am I to argue?

ooooh! Pierre Clostermann's skin! I hope they'll add his Tempest as well.
Wrote the same comment before reading... My bad. :x
Oh god that intro music. Oh how I want more Above the Cliffs of Dover.
A great overview of the Spitfire Mark 9, I look forward to more as always.
In his excellent book The Big Show, Pierre Clostermann wrote something like this after his transfer to the Tempest V: “ The Germans carefully avoided taking on the Spit, knowing its value in a dogfight.” He goes on to say many of the newest generation of German fighters, such as the D9 and K4, had the necessary speed to do that. I’m a simple man;
I see norwegian livery, I press like
Made a bummer on the name dough.. Rolf, not Rold..
That Rolf Arne Berg skin is amazing. You can see he had his initials RAB were it should say RAF on the tail, the RAF leadership didnt like it much
Thank you very much, people I can not recall and Magz
I remember that and can't recall the video either, regardless you are most welcome mate! Glad you enjoyed them.
Did you visit the one in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada?
+1 for Norwegian Spitfire
Beautiful. Voice audio was fine for me, did not notice any change. Can´t wait for Bodenplatte but till then....Hornet release hype is on its peak this week. XD God, waht a memorable summer this is going to be. Good times, good times, I say!

Always nice to see more IL2 on the channel.
The aircraft really looks like the Spitfire 16 due to the clipped wings and even the paint scheme.
I really hope the Tempest will get Pierre Clostermann's "Le Grand Charles". (nice to have his Mk.IX tho)
Please do more of these great history lessons!!! Love them
Oh shit, I am extremely excited to see Battle of Bodenplatte content coming from you Magz ;DDD
3:54 Nice recovery from that spin. Almost went bad, but you’re a good pilot so it didn’t.
I definitely would have died lmao
I think you forgot to set the gyro sight, but the result was nice anyway, you weren't the only plane up in the sky with its wings clipped!
Just set it wrong and was then too busy getting shot or trying not to be shot at to correct it. Worked well enough to get the angle so I just needed to eyeball the distance (hence the number of bursts before the kill).
it happens to me with radiators during take off
I've become obsessive compulsive with my radiators (melted one too many engines over the years :P) I expect I will with the Gyro as well with a little more time with it.
MagzTV ah, I was going to ask why bring the gyro if you're not going to set it but survival over all well done.
3:50 nice move
Beautiful Spit skin work!
This is nice and all, but we all know the aircraft everybody is waiting for. JUG! JUG! JUG! JUG!
Why did you fit the gyro sight if you were just going to use the fixed reticle and ignore the gyro sights all together?
I am not sure where now (maybe it was 1Cs own video), but as I understood it, you are able to drop the racks for the bombs too if you wish. Which would bring the Spit back to its performance level if none of those things were ever put on the plane.
Loved that Canadian camo!! That is what I will be using all the time! :)
The climb rate are for combat power, but i know u know that. From what i can find through google searching the maximum climb rate at sea level @+18boost 3000rpm are 25m/s. That is pretty darn good, i love the new spitfire. I wonder how the g-14 climbs at full power.
Cant wait for the G-14 review as well ^_^
Couple of days and that will be up
Great vid Mags. Just a couple of points I'm confused about. Firstly the Gibbes "RAF" skin. Isn't that the legendary Bobby Gibbes, RAAF, as suggested by the roundels? Also, isn.t that a MkVIII tail on that MkIX?

God bless you.
For using Metric system through-out your video.
That RCAF camo is my thing. Long live Canada.
How do I get out of wep and manage boost I’m struggling to get that to work
Wait, is that berg camo Norwegian?
H3lliks yupp, sure is
This thing is a joy to fly.
A skilled A-5 pilot is still going to walk all over this thing. I found its performance in game to be only slightly better than the Mk. Vb. It does have substantially more firepower than the Mk. No. This thing regularly walks all over Fw 190s. It seems to be faster and more maneuverable.

Does the Mk.IX have a default RAF camp, or were the skins that you showed all of them?
There is yes, I forgot to add it.
I swear the Battletech OST is playing in the background
That's because it is.
I've yet to land without spinning out at the end with either of the spitfires currently in the game. Good to know I'm not the only having issues with this.
I can put the V down without few problems but the IX feels much more temperamental about it.
Great vid mate
which version of il 2 is this
I'm really considering getting this game. New to flight sim games and my only experience is war thunder sim battles. Does anyone know if this game will go on sale on steam? How much different does the FM feel compared to war thunder. Finally, is it easy to find multiplayer games and how long do games last ? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
why dose the gun sight have names of german aircraft at different range's?
thats the selector for the wingspans. The gyro sight predicts the correct lead based on the target you select.
Great video altho you could have gone a bit more into the Gunsight.
Hi Magz - Just wanted to let you know, that you might have an audio "problem" at least in this video (only watched till 1:50 so far). Check the video description and the top comment, I am aware of this and already covered it.
*hangs head in shame ;-)
lol, don't worry it happens all the time :P
Gday magz how's the weather up there
I just got the new spitfire and I don't have that crosshair in my plane and is that the new map
Is this battle of brittan il2?
I really wish they added the spitfire mk xiv. Would have been nice to have a Griffin spit in the game.
This is the first of the western front expansions, While a Griffin Spit won't have fit in this particular expansion it seems like 777 is intending to do three expansions for each theater. whats the name of the song in the beginning so I can play it as I play hearts of iron.
So no 150 Octane fuel and raised manifold pressure?
In the time period of Bodenplatte no, it could however be added as a modification at a later time when the western front expansions for Great Battles widen the time frame.
MagzTV 150 Octane fuel is perfectly reasonable for the timeframe of the game, September 44 to March 45. 2TAF begame converting from January.
Not with the current implementation. MagzTV to be fair it also makes sense from a balance perspective. 25PSI on the MK9 would make it practically overpowered.
It would and you are correct, I expect the performance mod and the e wing mod may be added later once more Bodenplatte aircraft have become available for this reason. As I said, first release of the early access so I am unconcerned, Bodenplatte isn't due for release for some time so plenty can change between now and then.
Tactical stall @3:52. :P
that music...battletech!
Gorgeous intro :)
331 Squadron RAF Norwegian Spitfire c:
So many nice skins
when's bodenplatte being released?
aspyromilios late 2018,maybe 2019
Indeed, Basically this is the first of the BoP early access patches, the last major patch before this one was the release of BoK
I think one of the dev's said in a live Q&A on TS that the dev window for bodenplatte was for release in fall 2019. They tend to make things available for early access though as they are ready, which is why we have the spit IX and 109 G14 already.
It's a beaut for me!!
Aaaaa I'm drowning in numbers
Are you eyes better?
Or do you have new contact lenses
Nope and I'm due for a new set this coming month.
Not too many skins depicting British Spitfires there. Even Johnnie Johnson’s is depicted as Canadian and was most definitely British. Not Canadian. Still if it makes people feel better to think that the Brits had everybody else fighting for them who am I to argue?
Pimp my Spitfire
Why do the AI just fly around in circles when engaged in the IL2 series? Could be a great game but the AI pilots are abysmal to say the least : /
FIRST!
Congratulations, we're very proud.
War Thunder is no longer your favourite?
