      Colin Delaney thank you very much! To answer your question yes fly I professionally and am incredibly lucky to do so. It’s quite a story how I went from a flight simmer to real life pilot. Previously I was a flight instructor for single engine, multi engine, and instrument training but currently I’m an airline pilot flying the CRJ-900 in the USA. I try to approach these videos with my flight instructor and gamer hat on to make them as understandable as possible, plus I have them peer reviewed by other real life pilots (with airline / fighter jet experience) before releasing them too. If its good enough to make it past that review then I’m happy for you guys to see it :-)

    Thank you! That gliding approach is the first I've seen. Could you elaborate as to why you do this?

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  5 лет назад +5

      It's known as a "power off 180" approach. No particular reason to do it or not to do it all the time. It's kind of a test of how good your energy management of the airplane is. Ideally you will land where you want to land using this technique, but it takes practice. For an extra challenge you can try these power off approaches to a wheel landing instead of a 3 pointer

    As usual a terrific video. Any chance you could do something on avoiding blackouts in the Spit IX? Something about this aircraft makes it very prone to blacking out, at least when I fly it. Thanks

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  5 лет назад +2

      I'll try Neil. The issue with blackouts is that it's related to the rate at which you apply G as well as the max you can apply. The Spitfire and Tempest for example have high amounts of elevator authority so you can apply G very fast very easy...too fast for the pilot's cardiovascular system to compensate, so he gets to say goodnight :-)

    • @nvennard
      @nvennard 5 лет назад

      I guess all that elevator authority is great when you are slow not so much when you are fast.

      @RequiemsACTL  6 лет назад

      I do have the DCS Spitfire as well but I haven't flown it yet! It will be pretty much the same procedure you see in this video as I use the real manuals when available for these familiarisations. I'll see about doing a quick takeoff and landing in it.

    • @manic_miner
      @manic_miner 6 лет назад

      It's maybe not the right place here but the flight model in DCS is quite different and the plane becomes very light and floaty on approach (and hard to control), with a tendency to turn every which way but fly straight, causing a wing tip on landing (for me). At least in IL-2, the planes are more predictable. Having only flown a Katana in real life, I can't comment but based on the films I have seen, Spitfires appear quite controllable, even on final.

      Ah good to know. I actually finished a few takeoffs and landings in it via the "Instant Action" mission just now (Video link at bottom) Wind was 300 @ 4 m/s (8kts) but it lined me up on RWY 09...so I took off with that slight tailwind and swapped to the downwind for RWY 27 at midfield for a crosswind landing (4kt component).
      The main impressions left on me were a weird transition in the FM from the ground to the air and overdone yaw oscillations during even minor power changes (may be my controller). For just a 4kt crosswind though it felt like I needed an excessive amount of crab on final in other approaches I made as well.

    Help, I have watched you how to on the mk9 spitfire many times however I keep losing control after landing and slowly down on the run out , the aircraft starts to swing and no amount of brake and rudder will bring it back this usually results in a wing strike and ripped off aileron. I still have flats down , should I raise them after touch down. Any suggestions grateful accepted. Thanks in anticipation Leigh

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  3 года назад +2

      Just as a disclaimer...what I'm going to tell you next is a technique for the game. I do not recommend this when flying in real life. In the Il-2 Spitfire: Hold down the brake as soon as you touchdown and DO NOT let go of the brakes until you're at a stop. When you use the rudder pedals you will get differential braking as well as the normal rudder effect. You will not ground loop whether the engine is running or turned off doing this technique.
      Pretty much everything I teach on my channel is based on real life principles...but this one is a rare exception to make your landings in the sim easier.

  • @MrNonaste

    Good video. Thanks. I have a real problem with ground loops. What am I doing wrong?

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  4 года назад +1

      Use braking and rudder at the same time. This will provide differential braking. You can land the Spit engine on or off without ground looping ifc you use this technique. It just takes practice :-)

    • @MrNonaste
      @MrNonaste 4 года назад

      @@RequiemsACTL Thank you. This has been driving me bonkers. Every single time I grease it on, nice and easy, 3 point, slow, gentle braking I think no way a ground loop and then I go into one. I looked up the Spit to see if it had a locking tail wheel. Nope. Your answer has saved me from pranging another bird. Salute.

  • @unreasonable3589
    @unreasonable3589 6 лет назад +3

    Excellent video as usual, but there is one mistake. The take off elevator trim is one division nose down, not nose up as you have it in the video. See the manual: it is quite explicit.
    It does not make much difference in fact, especially since the BoS Spitfires seem to have less nose up tendency than the real thing, but that is what the book says.

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  6 лет назад +3

      I know what you're meaning Unreasonable. I do have the original Spit IX manual (plus the DCS one) as I try to base these videos off the manuals from the period when I can. From what I learned the neutral position is 2 bars towards Nose Up from the center according to the DCS manual, so with the phrasing in the original manual maybe it needs to be 1 bar down from neutral instead? I don't know. It doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference as you said, but with that neutral position in the video I the takeoff felt very natural so I wasn't too concerned about it. One day when I fly a Spitfire in RL I'll know for 100% certainty though :-D

    • @unreasonable3589
      @unreasonable3589 6 лет назад +2

      I stand corrected! I just assumed that the neutral position is in the middle of the scale, since there is nothing on the scale or in the manual to indicate otherwise, but on checking the trim tab in external view it is as you say at neutral when two divisions up from the middle. I shall now have to get used to taking off in a slightly less nose down posture.
      Thanks for reply! I always learn useful stuff from your films. Hope you get a chance to fly a real Spitfire one day.

    • @RequiemsACTL

      All of these airplanes are capable of doing power off 180° landings, but the technique required will be different so you would need to practice to find out.

    why does the Spitfire always spin around near to the complete stop ? What am i doing wrong ?

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  5 лет назад +1

      You need to continue holding brakes until you come to a stop and use rudder at the same time. When using brakes with the rudder pedals it provides differential braking.

    Hi.. Im having some dificulties using the engine for normal and combat flight. What is the correct throttle, propeller and mixture for best performance in normal flight and combat? • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  6 лет назад

      Look in the Specifications page when in the hangar to find the correct RPM and Boost settings for the MkVb and IX Spitfires. Use "Max Continuous" for cruise flight and "Combat" for combat. As for mixtures just keep them at the "Auto Rich" setting, but you can set them to "Auto Lean" during cruise if you wish. There is a bug right now (31 Oct 18) which may be causing problems for you as it affects the automatic radiator control in the Spit Mk IX, so it can't not regulate temperature correctly that should be fixed in the next patch.

      @@RequiemsACTL nice.. thanks. And what about the overcontroll during hard turns? It seams for me that the elevator have excesse of actuation when I pull during turns. That doesnt happend in other planes. I think that is why I always saw people fall in expiral durin combats when this plane was release in the game. But I didnt figure out how to avoid. If i pull less, everyone get on my six... any tips?

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  6 лет назад

      The elevator is very sensitive, so it takes practice to become accustomed to how much you need depending on your airspeed. Try some tight turning starting from different airspeeds in a quick mission without anyone shooting at you. With a fast airspeed you should be able to turn hard enough to start greying out but the slower you go you will need more back pressure to keep up the same turn rate. Start out with a little bit of back pressure then increase it...if a bandit starts moving to your six then pull back more to bring him forward on the canopy. You shouldn't have much problem out turning anything in the Spitfire.
