My job is a car fleet manager and we have a few Teslas in the fleet. One needed a repair to the centre console and the driver booked a service call to fix the car at his house. The time came and no call or knock at the door so he looked outside to see the Tesla tech already had the car open in the driveway working on it.
Didn’t bother to announce his arrival and ask to access the car just remotely opened it himself.
Remember you never actually own a Tesla, you just pay to use it.

One of my friends in an EV evangelist. Can’t stop raving about them.
Has only EVs for his entire family. (4 adults..)
Solar panels and a huge home battery.
Problem is that they are all out during the day and the battery can’t charge or top up the cars and keep the house running…
So the grid gets used a lot, his battery Gerets sapped really fast and is not so hot after two years of use so already needs potential replacement.
He was estimating that in 4 years he would make his money back on the fuel side and be equal on the cost of the vehicle compared to the alternative ICE car…
Well it’s been 4 years and he’s still quite far off. He said maybe in another 3 years if fuel prices keep rising as fast as they have been over the last 3 years and grid electricity prices stay the same…
I recently needed to rent a larger vehicle for a road trip my family was planning.
He suggested I rent an EV, so I gave him our potential route and what we wanted to do and he came back with a very complicated charging plan and I had to extend the trip by two days due charging times…
Also due to the difference in rental price it would cost me more than a similar ICE vehicle including fuel costs…

@rayjohnson6286 I don’t need to pay for any of that infrastructure to refuel my car. I live in Australia where solar power is supposed to be cost effective. However, I live in a part of Australia where it is overcast 50% of the time. I had the option of putting solar panels on my roof when I built my home. It was just a huge waste of money that I would never recoup. My power bills just aren’t that high. The price I pay for diesel is well worth the convenience and performance I want. If an EV meets your needs, and you are happy to sink all that capital into generating and storing your own electricity, all power to you. I am struggling to understand why you think the extra outlay for an EV plus the infrastructure costs is worth it. It’s clearly not a sound economic decision. If all you want is transport you can buy a Kia Picanto for a reasonable price, with very low running costs.

Luckily some of this was offset by the windshield washer fluid I had in the garage. Okay, I did have to replace the tires after around 50,000 miles.
After that horrendous expense, I'm lucky that after 11 months and 11,000 miles, I've only had to spend $0.00 on my Model Y.

The sources of which being (a) battery longevity and (b) whether or not the extra options bought by the first owner (such as FSD) will carry over to subsequent owners, or will they be disabled via an OTA update once Tesla gets wind of the vehicle changing hands.

If Teslas are rapidly depreciating in value then where can I buy one? Looking online nearly all are at near new prices, unless you have a 4+ year old vehicle.
I rented a Polestar 2 from Hertz early this year specifically to get the EV experience. They offered me 25% off so why not. Well, the car was good but the cabin oddly cramped.
Charging on a 2kw supply was predictably glacially slow, and I returned the car with only 2/3 charge after having it charging overnight at my house. Hertz of course happily charged a premium to charge it. That got me thinking: everyone fills up their car to avoid getting ripped off on fuel before handing the car back. But for almost everyone that is impossible with an EV.

GM, Ford and VW are all slashing production of EV’s.
The majority of Chinese producers have already gone bust.
People in general don’t want to buy an EV at twice the price of a similar ICE.

Even a minor accident can leave battery damage undetected only to result in self-combustion at a later stage if the battery pack is not replaced. Buying a used EV has just become decidedly uneconomical. Fortunately, I am a late adopter of technology so not previously planning upon buying an EV until 2030. These massive machines die cast the whole thing in 4 pieces and Tesla is aiming to make them in one piece, unlike traditional car frames made up of 60-70 or so welded steel pieces. This means that if the Tesla frame gets damaged its extremely difficult (read expensive) to repair unlike replacing the damaged metal parts like in a normal car. So guess what? A relatively minor accident may mean the Tesla gets written off instead of being repaired. You can see how that might affect your insurance premiums.

as a telsa owner myself, its far cheaper to own and operate and maintain than my previous vehicle, which was also pretty cheap as well being a brand new hybrid that met its demise from an elk running into my car on a pitch black freeway in texas.
after the accident, i went back home to las vegas, and as an uber driver in vegas i rented one of these at $450 a week all in with insurance...for 3 weeks while i was waiting for insurance payout and so i can work. $450 a week sucks but it was temporary and a busy season so it didnt hurt too much.
the rental of one is what made my buy one instead of buying the same vehicle i had prior.
i bought it for economic reasons as im saving about $400 a month based on my usage, insurance differences, etc directly compared to my previous vehicle, and a tax credit too. honestly the Elk did me a huge favor. considering i live in an apartment, the only way i can charge is in the garage i pay extra for (i was paying for garage prior to the tesla already) and i do not pay for electric on the garage...so my cost to charge are only at SC IF i need one which is rare, and its often only $3-6.
as an uber driver in vegas, there are tons of these running around here that are rentals, often held by people with 430 credit scores slaving away paying nearly $2000 a month, and they drive them hard, and with zero care if they break them because it isnt their car, hence why hertz is losing their arses on these things, they drive them like total crap, and zero regard for anyones safety.
in vegas, if you rent one of these they tell you to go to pep boys to do inspections and service. resale value on rental cars are ALWAYS lowered due to miles, and depending on the car they are often fleet optioned vehicles vs retail models which is lower value too.
I used to work at a body shop here and they had an exclusive contract with enterprize car rental to do body work on their cars and there was no shortage of any car model getting repaired. often we saw tons of dodge chargers and challengers with body damage back then.
I am not an EV simp, i honestly really never considered it until i rented one. everyones situation is different and for me it was economics. people ask me daily if its worth it, and my honest answer is always "rent one for a week and see if it works for you" because there are some instances where i dont totally feel they are worth it. many people do own them to virtue signal, but the reality is these are not environmentally friendly (you have indisputably proven this in a dozen angles how they arent). when the day comes i stop doing the work i do now, chances are i wouldnt buy another one as im hoping ill just sell it off for whatever its worth by then, and buy a solid easy to fix reliable vehicle to get from point A to B in with no payments, cheap insurance, easy to repair, cheap and abundant parts that i can do 90% of the work myself. i generally drive 6000 miles a year for personal use....gas wont hurt me when there is no payment involved. i also personally would never buy a used EV, and would not want to own one out of the battery/drive unit warranty which in USA is 8yr/100k miles for most of them. (for me thats about 5 years)
resale values are not that bad. i still see 3 year old model 3 and Y going for higher numbers than expected, however this will truly depend on your region/market. rentals however with high miles and poorly driven like any rental car, will always be tanked in comparison.

What plans can you make for an EV battery fire? If you know an effective way to handle that, then you should tell the fire department, because right now they hose it down until the chemical energy is spent.
More to the point, it costs US$ 20000 to replace a Tesla battery pack. You are going to need one of those in something like five years, depending on how you drive. At that point replacing the battery is a considerable chunk of the resale value of your car. Often it is *more* than the resale value of your car.
In the event of a collision, Tesla can (and will) charge you US$ 8k to inspect and certify the car to make sure that it is safe. If you don't have your care inspected and certified, Tesla will turn off features, including fast charging.
Insurance is catching up fast. The insurance cost are about to reflect the reality of these catastrophic fires that can not be extinguished. Hertz isn't making this up. They can't resell used a Tesla (because of the battery replacement cost) they can't insure a Tesla, so now what? Perhaps you should tell the Hertz CEO that he is just making it up and that everything is rosy? If you are right their share price will go through the roof. If I am right and there is a high Total Cost of Ownership, then they will dump their fleet of electric vehicles while they can still be resold.

My experience after 1 year with my Tesla model 3 has been polar opposite to Hertz. 27,000 trouble free miles with zero cost other than electricity. No repairs required. I haven't bothered with tire rotation 🤔 and washer fluid is cheap. The cost to go 27,000 miles was about 575 bucks!! (US equiv) as charged from home on my TIME OF USE meter provided by my local utility company expressly for EV charging. Thats .09 cents per kwh. Charged overnight while I sleep meaning ultra convenient. My equivalent ICE car (which I really love) Mercedes Benz C43 AMG costs 4,700 dollars in fuel and another 300 bucks in scheduled service to go the same distance. My wife and I battle over which car we drive and now sadly the C43 is being a garage queen. Massively cheaper to own my EV. By the way the Tesla weighs 4,065 lbs. The C43 4,084 lbs. So much for EVs weighing too much. Plus I have a full house solar system that can add juice during the day but I didn't include that in the energy usage as many do not have this possibility so that would just be bragging. 😂 The cost of the solar system is borne by the house energy cost reduction. Having said that, IF YOU CANT CHARGE FROM HOME DONT BUY AN EV. I have no problem with the public DC fast chargers, as they work but the price per kwh is all over the place and they remain a bit inconvenient. But we have done the occasional longer journey beyond 325 miles without concern. Frankly The Tesla Model 3 dual motor long range is the best ownership experience I've had by a very long ways. 👍At 70 yrs old I've had 22 cars in the past 30 years. I guess everything boils down to "use case" am I'm certainly not an Uber driver. But its important to keep things balanced and in context. 😁

To be fair to EJ, John, he is just taking from the Ford playbook. The main difference is how he has been able to milk government subsidies.
Vertically integrate yourself through the supply chain to understand the costs. Use that knowledge to drive your supplier prices down. Come up with new.radical ways of making cars and then cost reduce to get them mass market affordable. Ford took the Model T from ~$1300 each to $295 each over a 10 year period, which also must have shafted consumers on resale in a big way at the time.
EJ seems to be trying to repeat that with an EV. I am surprise Ford haven't used their own history a little more to achieve similar results. Personally I think the change he made to reduce manufacturing costs will shaft the consumer big time as the cost to repair will be massive as in automotive all the low hanging cost reduction during manufacturing had definitely been picked (along with the stuff reachable by a ladder or cherry picker...) Bend a "giga casting" and the car is written off, not including a slight knock to the pack makes it an unknown timebomb.

    • @chuckschillingvideos
      @chuckschillingvideos 8 месяцев назад

I daresay most Model T owners bought them and kept them till they rotted away. There really wasn't the "trade up" mindset in the automobile market place in the 19 teens like that which developed after WWII. So most owners kept the damn things, handed them down to their children, etc. Much more so than we do today.

A point that Hertz failed to consider is that most people don't know how to drive an EV. If you have never experienced One-Peddle-Driving you are in for a surprise.
If you are used to have to use knobs to adjust settings you will have trouble jumping into an EV where all the setting are on a display under menus you have never seen before.
I think Hertz made the jump too soon. There are not yet enough seasoned EV drivers to support an EV rental model. Yet...

I don't know why I enjoy this channel as a left leaning, tree hugger, but I do. I appreciate the counter balancing arguments that help me to keep from going off the deep end. (And the snarky delivery brings bonus smiles - 'Polestar is less crap than Tesla, but only just.') Some aspects of EV ownership are very interesting to me and fit our travel patterns nicely - e.g. 99.9% of our miles are within 50 miles of home, so charging overnight at home is easy and cheap -(at least until the damn thing burns my house down). I am not a fan of Tesla's build quality and am waiting to see how long term ownership costs shake out. I have two sons who bought Teslas, so I have a front row seat to their experience. They do end up in service quite a lot more frequently than our old school Toyotas. Tesla's at this point seem to follow a similar depreciation pattern to ICE cars here in Merica. So, I am guessing that Hertz's sadness comes from an unrealistic expectation that their cars would depreciate less than other cars. We keep a new car until it is basically down to scrap, so the only thing that matters to us is how long will the EV go before it experiences its final economic death? For our Toyotas, the mileage exceeds 200,000 so far. The other thing I hope to see is successful EV competition. As you noted, Polestar is less shit than Tesla, so we can only hope that eventually, VW, Daimler, Ford, GM, et. al., are also less shit than Tesla and that they learn how to make them in a profitable way. But, as they say, hope is not a strategy.

It doesn't matter what people believe. And I'm not sure if it even matters what the insurance companies believe. Every car garage (and car transporting ferry) now has EVs parked in it besides other cars. Even if it is an ICE car that catches fire, and the fire spreads to the next car, and that next car happens to be an EV, the fire now cannot be stopped, and the entire car garage (or the ferry) goes up in flames.
I think that the insurance rates are going to keep rising on ALL vehicles, and will stay high for as long as there are EVs. The EV zealots do dumb stuff, and we all pay the price.

When people mention the cost to run an EV everyone worries about the battery...which IS a concern, but I'd be looking more at the cost to repair the body should the inevitable shunt occur. A simple dent in the rear corner of a Rivian cost $48,000 to repair!!!! The 'mega-press' construction of the Tesla makes for fast assembly...and atmospheric repair cost should it be damaged so once these bills start rolling in to the insurance companies you can bet their prices will rise accordingly.

What exactly is the high cost of maintenance for an EV? I'm pretty sure maintenance costs are negligable. But if people are reluctant to rent them, for whatever reason, its obviously a disaster for a car rental agency. When you rent a car, you're typically visiting an unfamiliar place. This would tend to magnify range anxiety and uncertainty about where to charge.

You missed the big picture. Tesla 3s were selling for $40k and had a greedy "temporary" massive price hike to $60K. Elon wasn't supposed to say it was temporary (but he leaked it) so nobody believed it would be temporary. Then Hertz stocked up on them. I should also mention that Hertz stocked up with no discount. Then Tesla actually returned the price to $40K like he said they would. So if you stocked up at the price peak like Hertz, ouch, painful. And folks rent Teslas to drive them like race cars, so say goodbye to fewer repairs, ouch, painful. In the future Hertz will need to get Teslas throttled back. And on top of it all you can't find a cheap repair shop willing to touch a Tesla (and if they are willing repair parts are impossible to find). A good car, but wait to buy until Tesla parts are available at Amazon, O''Riley's, Car Max and Auto Zone. This is what's real; most of what you said is nonsense. Your story is humorous but misses the big picture.

  • @robsengahay5614

It was obvious to anyone that the price of Tesla Model 3s was going to fall (batteries are getting much cheaper and our supply now coming from China rather than America are the main drivers of price reductions). I bought one in 2019 knowing that as an early adopter I would take a hit on depreciation as prices fall. 4 years on you can now buy a better spec model than my 4 year old Tesla for about $15,000AUD less than I paid and that excludes government rebates which didn’t exist back then.
Well done for making the cheaper price of buying a Tesla sound like simply all-round bad news. Current buyers are getting a comparative bargain however the price of a Model 3 will probably fall again by the end of next year. EVs generally will keep falling in price as they get nearer to parity with ICE cars before the end of the decade. Lower resale prices will boost the used car market.
However I planned to keep the car long term unlike Hertz. If you aren’t settling off Teslas every 2 years then price falls don’t matter much. My Tesla is very cheap to run, immensely enjoyable to drive and has been largely trouble free so far. The battery degradation has been much less than I had anticipated and it has some great features.
Is it perfect, no. But I will be intrigued to see how it goes for the next few years.
The biggest issues for Tesla are that in Europe and Asia their cars are too big and Chinese and European manufacturers are now starting to release more suitable compact EVs. Musk’s latest vanity project, the Cybertruck, has serious problems with the build and the price and was the wrong direction to go. The FSD debacle has been a stupid distraction and another Musk vanity project. Personally I was never interested in autonomous driving anyway.
Electric delivery vehicles and compact cars are the mass market Musk claims he was seeking. With the models Tesla has they have probably passed peak demand now. Tesla will continue to do well as they still have some significant advantages over established automakers but I expect them to find the next 3 years much tougher than the last 3 simply because they don’t have a true mass market car in their stable.

Trains, trams, buses and active transport and redesigning where we all live and work, if we are to have a future, will be the only answer.

It would be great to get facts on for example the maintenance costs vs traditional cars. We tried one for 2 weeks. It was very good.

Breaking news. Tesla wouldn't discount for Hertz. However BYD has announced a ten thousand vehicle deal with Uber. Seems they are perfect for hiring operations.

Love this John, your take on things is so spot on and amusing at the same time. My mate has two Teslas in his garage and will not have a bad word said about them, the company, or Elon!🤐Wonder now how he feels about the 20% reductions in purchase price!

I personally don't give a toss about the fact that a model Y is now cheaper than when we bought it a year ago.
Planning to keep it for at least 10 years. By far the best car we've owned in our combined 80 years of driving.
Saved about $2200 on petrol already.

A big problem with Teslas is that they are too powerful for most drivers. No wonder so many of them get into problems requiring expensive repair. Also Teslas in particular are designed to be cheap(er) to make with a lot of large unibody parts. Unfortunately this makes them expensive to repair.
