This era of gaming had some of the funnest games of all time. It's like that era of gaming was full of so many creative ideas. A lot of developers took risk and concentrated on making their games...fun. Definitely a great era of gaming.
I been gaming since 1983 and I always say the 6th generation of gaming 1998-2004 (I include PC, Gameboy Color/Advance, Dreamcast, PS1 and N64 , Gamecube, Xbox, PS2, ) etc was the best and last peak creative sense of gaming whereas now it's just bumping the graphics and adding more scope and size from that era of games. PC had some of the best games every during that era. November 2004 we ended up getting Halo 2, Half Life 2, WoW, Nintendo DS and so forth to conclude it) Every console still had some console only great games...think Halo, Smash Brothers, PS2 in 2001 got Tony Hawk 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and GTA 3 all within like 8 weeks of each other, also Omnimusha, Devil May Cry. Dreamcast had amazing arcade ports and Sega fun, Xbox put out Halo, Gamecube was fun, N64 and PS1 got some of their best games during this era from Perfect Dark to Tony Hawk 1 and 2, Majora's Mask etc. , Gameboy Advance really ushered in a new era of what portable gaming could eventually be with SNES ports and 32 bit 2d games and the PSP and DS came out after and refined that.
I used to play this game every day religiously when I was a kid for many years, I could never complete it 100% since those challenges were very hard, but hell did I enjoy the game.
@cartoonistlouis773 I went through 3 copies of this game in like a year. I remember getting it for Christmas and madly playing it every chance I got. Burned through 1 copy cause I was playing it like 10 hrs a day during days off school. Looking back I do think I overdid it as a kid. Remember my mom being very concerned for me. But at the same time it was amazing. I rememeber trying to explore every corner of the game. Beating it over and over. Great times
I think the reason this game sticks out so much compared to the others is just how much power they squeezed out of these consoles. To go from the original Spider-Man game to this in the same generation was absolutely bonkers. And the swinging wasn’t matched until PS4.
@@danieleanzaldiyou smoking crack? Spiderman PS4 is superior to this game in every way including swing mechanics and this was probably one of my top 3 ps2 games too…
Spiderman 2 is a proof that a simple game made with care and effort can be a gem. Btw, the fact that you can still punch enemies when they're dead is hilarious 😂
The thing that always stuck with me regarding Spider Man 2 is how drastically different to its predecessor it was, from it’s graphical style to the gameplay. It felt like an actual sequel, and not a just a new version of the previous game that tends to happen with sequels now. Granted, that’s not exactly a bad thing, that’s just something that makes a sequel stick with me more.
The SM 1 PS2 game was technically just the PS1 Spider-Man games in a hot new console (at the time), so yeah it is really gamebreaking and not to mention, in the era where tie-ins were things and their notorious quality due to tight release date, SM 2 came out as one of few diamonds in the rough.
I LOVED the "fight" with Mysterio in this game!!! His health bar charges up THREE times and you're thinking, "Oh crap, I'm screwed!" then you just hit him once and it's all over! lmao
Wow, that balloon line brought me right back to 2004. I LOVED this game when I was a kid, especially the side missions, tokens, and exploring the open world. What a golden age for gaming.
I can't even begin to count how many hours of my childhood I "wasted" simply by swinging around the city for fun. But man, at the same time I'll be the first in line to admit it's visually kinda rough going back to SM2 after the more modern games.
Truthfully this game was a master piece and is just so nostalgic, gives me memories of middle school when I’d play this all day long trying to get as far as possible because I didn’t have a memory card😂😂😂
A nice touch about this game that nobody ever mentions (or at least I haven’t seen it) when you swung the web was still left in the building *chefs kiss*
To expand on this, the perfect interplay between web swings, both one and two handed, swing boost, storable charge jumps and wallrun are the most crucial things that make this game so endlessly absorbing. It starts to feel almost like operating a vehicle.
My favorite random crimes were the Gang Wars. I remember when one of the thugs said "You sent my brother to the Joint!" and Spider-man blandly responded "Who says 'The Joint,' anymore?" 🤣🤣🤣
Nice to see a video of this game where someone finally mentions my two favorite things about it. The move where you string guys up from light poles, and the balloons. I LOVED THE BALOON MISSIONS. I wish they brought that back in the new games.
I rememebr tbis game had a cheat code. When entering in your player profile name, if you input TREYARCH backwards, you skipped to the post game free roam with enough hero points to buy all abilities
I kinda miss the ragdoll effect, it kinda made the game even more fun to play haha and would have me cracking up dying sometimes how much damage I could inflict on a common thug.
Loved this game. Spent so many hours just swinging around beating up criminals long after i finished the game. I loved how quick it loaded too! Wish insomiac brings back the ability to tie criminals up to lamp posts
Also the part where you mentioned the combat i think the arkham games took pointers from this. There really wasnt any type of combat system before that time except this game
I know right? I remember when I came across this and was expecting a reality warping, epic boss fight so I was hesitant at first only for him to go down in one hit. At first I was so stunned I couldn't move but then I started laughing at how ridiculous this was. This is still one of my favorite moments in video games.
I just finished it the other day. It's amazing how well this game held up! Once I got my reaction times back up, swinging was still the best in franchise history. Plus, spinning piledrivers off the Empire State Building...so yeah. Also, it has my favorite version of Black Cat. I was heart-broken that he left her for Mary-Jane's fugly ass. I knew it was going to happen, and it still pissed me off lol
The graphics were much better in Spider-Man 3. This game does not age well visually it's not textured, detailed or appealing for the eye. It looks unpolished, lifeless and dull. The vividness in the city was more in Spider-Man 1 & 3. Here it's almost completely empty with few bystanders and cars here and there. Not that impressive. Like playing Minecraft or something there's no point to it other than to fart and roam around for a while and then it gets tedious and you want to do something else with your valuable time.
I was on the fence with Spider Man 2 after how disappointed I was with Spider Man 2002 but after reading the Games Master Review and said it felt like you were spider man I bought straight away and loved it. I think I swing around the city more than I played the story lol.

He can take a criminal up a skyscraper with a criminal in hand, and jump off and pile drive their head onto the concrete from 1000 feet.
