@Toren hol up man, did you just say John's never been in a comic? You know he came out in the comics in like the 70s right? He's had tons of comics about him
The fact that John chose to stay with Vixen after meeting his future kid with Hawkgirl was and still is a very rare thing to show when it comes to a character meeting their kid from the future. And consequently it's one of my favorite things about him: he was in a happy relationship with Vixen and saw no reason to ruin that chasing "destiny" which really showed his maturity.
Also a bonus: it made his getting back together with Shayera more genuine too. Would be pretty weird if your ex just came up to you and said they broke up with their current partner to be with you again, not simply because of anything they still love or value about you, but because they went to the future and saw you had babies together. Plus, it put the power in Vixen's hands to end the relationship herself, allowing her to show off her own ability to be mature instead of a standard red herring love interest to be thrown aside and never referenced again.
He's also a badass. Love how in the Vandal Savage arc his ring loses power, stranding him in WWII, and he still goes and defeats the villain as a regular man
Yes thank you. I love a power loss story that shows a hero with absolutely no doubt in their abilities even when they aren't as powerful as they usually are.
It always felt so alienating to become attached to John Stewart from this show, only to learn he always exists in the shadow of Hal Jordan elsewhere, even being replaced by him in Crisis on Two Earths, despite it being pitched as a prequel to the show. I guess that just makes his relationship with Hawkgirl all the more fitting, since she's also second fiddle elsewhere.
I don't get it because every version of Hal I've ever seen has come across to me as extremely bland. Not all Johns are that great either, but I generally like them more than I do the Hals.
I think one of the things I really like about John is the fact he does not care about whether he's top dog (at least in this portrayal). He cares about protecting people and getting the job done, not the limelight.
Him being replaced by Hal was because the movie wasn't part of the DCAU. They had to swap him and Wally out so it wouldn't be seen as part of that universe and it became it's own mini universe. There's also another film in that universe later on called Justice League Doom.
Yes. I live in Greenland, so I barely knew about DC and Marvel. But this show aired here too, thanks to airing in Denmark. I was 13. Every week, I'd be stoked to watch it. I used a ton of VHS tapes to record them hehe. It's only years and years later that I found out that John wasn't the main GL. I was kinda bummed out, cuz I loved the guy.
John Stewart: A man who doesn't have a destiny of his own. As a soldier his path is laid out before him. As a Green Lantern his path is laid out before him. His past life was set in stone. His future seemingly set in stone as well. Seemingly he's comfortable with living his life on a set of rails, steady as she goes; but it got derailed when he got betrayed. John forsakes those rail but then learns that those rails were going to a place where he wanted to be the whole time. It's an interesting idea: Does one choose to reject destiny and fate when it's the outcome you want, just to make a statement about being in control?
I noticed how ever since John Stewart was introduced in the DCAU as the Green Lantern, there’s always a brotherly dynamic between a Green Lantern and a Flash whether it’s Hal Jordan and Barry Allen or John Stewart and Wally West.
There was always a close dynamic between them. Barry Allen was best friends with Hal Jordan and by extension Hal became a "cool uncle" to Wally. Jay Garrick was also best friends with Alan Scott. Wally.and Kyle disliked each other initially because Wally hated the fact that Kyle had replaced Hal but they soon went on to become very good friends and Barry was both a good friend and love interest to Jessica Cruz. There have been numerous series focusing on said friendships such as The Brave and The Bold and Faster Friends. John Stewart and Wally's friendship in the dcau was simply a new form of that iconic friendship rather then the beginning of it.
The ideal self he feels for himself seems to be based on a moral code where self denial is possibly the ultimate virtue. Indulging himself is basically always a departure from that code for him, and thus when he's with Vixen, a relationship that makes him happy, he loses the buzzcut and grows the pimp goatee. Shayera is the woman he's allowed to be self indulgent for, that's how in love with her he is, but even after Once and Future Thing, he can't bring himself to be selfish if there's anyone on the other side of it that could get hurt.
One thing that goes a long way toward explaining John's moral code is his experiences as a Marine and his training as an architect. John's life has trained him to focus his creativity in finding the simplest effective solution to any broadly defined problem in the shortest amount of time. And given how power rings work, John's preference for simple solutions can be represented in terms of simple constructs that are stronger than simple constructs usually tend to be.

I like how in the Justice League Kids episode, he's openly nerdy and is always trying to make his green ring manifestations more anime. When we see him using his ring as an adult, there's no imagination to them. If he needs a shield, he just forms a sphere around him and his friends. He needs a projectile, he just shoots a concussive blob of light. If he needs to detain an enemy, he'll probably manifest some combination of the previous two. His manifestations are no form, all function. Much like you'd expect from a soldier that has to think of and produce the most streamlined, simple version of what he needs, right on the spot.

@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp there was a comic. But it took place during season 1. We got some resolution in the episode “Barehanded” of Justice League Action and “Encounter Upon the Razor’s Edge” of Young Justice
One of my favorite memories is watching the episode of justice league where john was on trial on my brother's tiny tv with my dad. I remember staring wide eyed with a grin on my face as John charged his ring with the central power battery, defianly reciting the green lanturn oath. A few days after that, by dad got one of his buddies to carve me my own green lanturn ring out of wood, painted green with a little bit of green foil in the center of the lanturn insignia to kind of suggest that the ring was about to make a construct. Im so thankful that the dcau gave me that great memory, and im greatful that this video helped me remember it
I always appreciated his unwavering principles as a kid, and later on when I became a US Marine myself I felt an even stronger connection to the characters. I really wish he got more love outside of this setting because he is probably the closest to being like Batman in spirit while retaining his humanity and sense of self outside of the job.
I grew up on the justice league cartoons as a kid so when green lantern got a movie and it wasn't John I was so confused. John Stewart will always be my go to green lantern!
John Stewart was the Green Lantern I knew as a child. I didn't even know Hal Jordan existed until I was in my teens, and Hal never really wowed me. I don't hate him, but in my eyes he was always just "The other Green Lantern". John Stewart is THE Green Lantern.
don't get me wrong, i like hall and Kyle has my favorite stories. But John? he's so unique and adds so much to the league personalities and stories definitely the goat when it comes to the league
I think you've articulated why John Stewart is my favorite of Earth's Green Lanterns. The others are brash, overconfident, unserious, and egotistical. John's willpower is something totally different, rooted entirely in a sense of duty and concern for his fellow man. And those are qualities I consider to be part of the ideal.
Best green lantern in my opinion. John was kind but serious and loyal. He took responsibility and rarely tried to defend himself as he knew about consequences of actions despite intention. I love him so much!
I relate to John so much, for most of my life I put my own honor and integrity over my own needs. Now I feel like I don't deserve anything, it makes me depressed. John Stewart was always my favorite Green Lantern because I felt like I could relate to him better. Thank you for this video.
Somehow i wasn't subscribed but i clicked that button so hard when he said "go away Hal Jordan. John Stewart is MY GREEN LANTERN" absolutely loved this video
@TFoxRNG nope! I'd love to get my hands on some one day though. I'm aware of how John is in the comics, but since i grew up with JL and John, he's always my favorite. I enjoy Hal too. Love him and Barry
Damn and I was just thinking about when you were going to do a John Stewart video. I really liked his arc in the DCAU and he became one of my favorite heroes.
Haha I switched from Hal to John as "my" green Lantern because you convinced me to watch the Justice League. Thanks. I adored John's characterisation in the show, you did him justice.
There's no such thing as a "definitive" future, especially in DC, there's just a general direction based on what's happened already. Hawkgirl finding out about Warhawk very likely if not definitely changed the DCAU Timeline same as it changed a second time with the Batman Beyond Time Travel Episode.
Hal Jordan will always be my favorite GL, but John Stewart is a very close second. Phil Lamar did an exceptional job voicing him. One point of contention though. John was a Marine, not Army.
Every video you do is *immaculate* dude, keep it up! We love every video and my little boy also loves your in depth videos since he's never thought if things that way! He's only 8 thank you dude!
The interesting thing about John’s final decision in the series is that it can be read as quite selfish. He knows he still loves Shayera, but he tells her not only that he won’t be with her but he’s staying together with Vixen to assert his own control over destiny. The thing is that in doing so for that reason he’s actually hurting all three of them. He’s hurting Vixen by leading her on while he’s in love with Shayera, and he’s hurting Shayera and himself by refusing to face his true feelings. He’s essentially saying that he would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. Frankly I’d love to see Vixen figuratively (and possibly literally) slap some sense into him and dump him. Then she at least could be free to find someone who loves her for her, and not because he’s afraid to lose control of his life.
Hearing John Stewart recite the Green Lantern Oath at the end of “In Blackest Night: Part 2” is one of my all time favorite scenes of any TV Show ever. I love his capacity/willingness to be confident in his own Willpower to confront anything
I'm still positively surprised how both JLA and JLA:U have replaced Johns general history and character from his comics - considering he was characterised in the comics as someone destined for greatness whose own anger brought his downfall. If you didn't know, around the time the animated series aired John had actually caused the destruction of an entire planet (which infamously got blown up by an entirely yellow coloured bomb) and he also was wheelchair bound, meaning he essentially was fully retired as a hero. he only acted as sort of a big brother to Kyle Rayner as the sort of mentor who teaches his students exactly what not to do to be successful. and yes, I get it, John was the right choice as the Gl for the series, but dang it I'm still salty about Kyle getting the very short end of the stick in the DCAU
The destruction of xanshi actually took place early 90s I belive. A good decade before this show. The arc that this show adapts is based on a JLA arc from the late 70s that featured Hal Jordan.
Idk how many people still read comics here, but but for all John Stewart fans- I think there is a miniseries about John Stewart coming out in September called Green Lantern: War Journal.
I can't wait to see your analysis of Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman. I always can't get into their comics because I love these versions so much and hold them as the ideal standard. Plus they rightfully show him having super strength, modern animated adaptations keep showing him as just the psychic shapeshifter and he gets jobbed way too often in and out of comics. I wish people would respect MM again not just power wise but also his importance, hoping the movies can show him as like the heart of the team again and their last bastion. And on WW her depiction in JL feels the most humanized compared to comics where things are often rocky and at its best she seems bland. I loved the episode where she struggles with her growing temper and cynicism against unending human crime and conflict. And then also working through her grudge towards Hawkgirl. Oh and on the former there's that underlying arc in JLU where she and MM help each other out of their struggles and outsider feeling, a transparantly inhuman alien and a demigod from a closed off island. I just realized he was the one to confront and council her on her anger issues before she did the same when Jon was set on living out his life in isolation. And Jon has also been good at helping his other friends out of some tough situations like when Superman's greatest fear was his powers out of control in the dream episode, he's a lot like the dad or the team sometimes, and it also tracks cause he was a father once.
I think what makes his character even better is if you read the comic, John Stewart eventually does begin to let himself be truly happy. Unfortunately, it took Vixen being killed and him being kicked out of the Green Lantern Corp to get to that point. That said after it as all said and done, him and Shayera could finally live the life they always wanted to and finally settled down.
Man, your video essays involving the self-concept theory are so like fascinating. And I resonated with this video a lot too! Thank you so so much! These are just so unbelievably imsightful!

John is a great character. I'm glad that they chose him for the series (though of course, I LOVED the use of Hal Jordan in the broken timelines episode).
Justice league set up a "Changeable Timeline" As such if John refuses to be with Shiara, there's a good chance "Rex Stewart" will never exist. That's a shocker: Your dad pays a visit from the past and decides he doesn't want you to be born.
Mr. Stewart was my favorite green lantern and frankly he was truly my first outside of an old comic book trading card where I saw the original golden age green lantern. He was a good man and the best hero for a kid like me.
John Stuwart was not in the Army, nor was he a soldier. John Stuwart was a United States Marine. Devil Dog, Lantern, and Hero. My childhood favorite and the reason I enlisted. Semper Fidelis Sergeant.
The self-esteem paper gets the causal relationship completely backwards. It's that aspiring to values and principles higher than yourself allows you to subordinate your self to accomplishing good in the world around you. Dare I say that it is _faith_ in that higher good that produces confidence? The people who make heroic sacrifices don't do them because they think so highly of themselves. They are confident in themselves because they have made the choice to be good people and have faith that choice is worth the price, even when it costs them dearly.
Even though I'm in the Air Force, John Stewart as a Marine (not Soldier there's a difference) is such a good hero and role model. Maybe not the Justice Leagues self martyrdom and acceptance of false accusations, but a good Marine and hero non the less.

JL is where John became an icon as green lantern. Absolutely amazingly written character.
But John? he's so unique and adds so much to the league personalities and stories
definitely the goat when it comes to the league
I think you've articulated why John Stewart is my favorite of Earth's Green Lanterns. The others are brash, overconfident, unserious, and egotistical. John's willpower is something totally different, rooted entirely in a sense of duty and concern for his fellow man. And those are qualities I consider to be part of the ideal.
Hawkgirl did him dirty, but he's still the best Green Lantern hands down!
The episode where they go back in time and his ring runs out of juice so he joins the marines as a regular guy is one of my favorite episodes
@@Ballbuster42069 that's the WWII one right?
That's Kyle not john
@@toren2099 in the show it’s an episode where vandal savage is in control of nzi party and John joins the marines to help them turn the tide
@@habibkhaadi8710 I'm not talking about that
I never realised just how developed and nuanced he was. I knew all these already but never acknowledged it all.
John Stewart is also my Green Lantern. Loved it that they added him in Injustice 2.
BTAS, STAS, Justice League & JLU tas really were the best adaptations
Green lantern Tas was pretty peak as well
don't forget about Batman Beyond, Static Shock, the Zeta Project
Best green lantern in my opinion. John was kind but serious and loyal. He took responsibility and rarely tried to defend himself as he knew about consequences of actions despite intention. I love him so much!
That cartoon truly defined how i view each of those super heroes and any others feel like variants of these.
Everything about the 90s/early 2000s DC animation was so freaking awesome.
As someone who grew up with JL John Stewart was always MY green lantern
Just shows how good a show this is/was
John Stewart for President! He'll help revive American morality!
Can’t wait to hear that “something” song intro 😂
The first Green Lantern I've ever known and my favorite. I didn't even know there were others before him.
I love Hal, Kyle, and Jessica, but John truly is the 🐐 of the Green Lanterns. Black, a Marine, a man of principle, and voiced by Phil LaMarr🤷🏿♂️
So being black makes him good lmao
@@toren2099 I mean growing up with a superhero who looks like you is cool right? No shade to the others again but it definitely doesn’t hurt John
Hal Jordan will always be my favorite GL, but John Stewart is a very close second. Phil Lamar did an exceptional job voicing him. One point of contention though. John was a Marine, not Army.
He's currently the strongest green lantern, Emerald Knight (God like power) baby. Beware his power.
Christ bless you, that last sentence hits so hard
You legit do some of the best thinkpieces I've ever read or watched. You freaking rock
Every video you do is *immaculate* dude, keep it up! We love every video and my little boy also loves your in depth videos since he's never thought if things that way! He's only 8 thank you dude!
The DCAU Hal Jordan cameo was perfect.
I'm happy that both John Stewart and Hal Jordan are popular among fans for different reasons.
Funnily enough John Stewart was the first Green Lantern I got to know through this cartoon actually.
Hearing John Stewart recite the Green Lantern Oath at the end of “In Blackest Night: Part 2” is one of my all time favorite scenes of any TV Show ever. I love his capacity/willingness to be confident in his own Willpower to confront anything
Easiest way to deeply offend a Marine is to call him a soldier. John Stewart is the GOAT.
There's a reason why he's presented as glowing his Power Ring amidst a darkening twilight in the opening sequence pre-Unlimited.
Growing up with these shows, I only realized later how under-utilized both John and Hawkgirl are when they're some of my, and many others faves.
Rewatching all the justice league episodes made me realize how awesome GL and hawkgirl two of the best written characters on the show
These videos are making me a little excited for JLU hitting Canadian Netflix soon, guess I'm going to be binging that when I can.
Jon Stewart will always be my favorite Lantern.
John Stewart is OUR Green Lantern.
Kyle really hasn't been featured in a lot of media, which is a shame because you could really do some fun stuff with him being an artist.
I can’t stop watching this channel
I love how in this show they actually care about like damage and stuff and Batman video if you haven't done one sorry if I forgot
Genuinely one of my fave video essays from you!!
My favorite Green Lantern and Marine superhero in fiction. And he's one hell of a combat engineer and architect.
Man, your video essays involving the self-concept theory are so like fascinating. And I resonated with this video a lot too! Thank you so so much! These are just so unbelievably imsightful!
I really appreciate this video because I've always liked John Stewart's character in JL/U, but I've always had trouble putting it into words.
Who’s to say Warhawk wasn’t just the result of a one night stand. John still could’ve ended up with Vixen
I love your videos so much. They're so well edited and extremely stylized yet at the same time also holistic. You're easily one of my favorite creators on this platform.
Honestly, John Stewart is THE Green Lantern for me too, ngl. I grew up seeing him in the JL & later in JLU. Always thought he was more badass than Hal lol
Me at ep 1 of JL: "What? Where's Hal or Kyle?"
Me at JLU finale: "John is the best GL. I will die on this hill."
DC needs to stop pretending like John Stewart isn't the best Green Lantern.
Thank you so much for all that you do. Finding your channel has been the best thing I've done for my mental health since stopping watching the news. Thanks for the dc love. You have left the world better than you found it.
John is the best of us..
John is a great character. I'm glad that they chose him for the series (though of course, I LOVED the use of Hal Jordan in the broken timelines episode).
John Stewart will always be my favorite Green Lantern, specifically because of this show.
Birds don't sing, but John Stewart is a helluva dancer
John Stewart was my first contact with Green Lanterns. When I saw a Hal Jordan toy I was like "lol mom look a fake!!"
my favourite character, what a TV series, truly so enjoyable and well made. equally can be said about this video you made, cheers.
John Stewart isn't a soldier. He's a Marine! Entirely different!
OOHRAH!!!!!!!!
"The Army is a Calling
The Marines are a Cult." 😉
Thank you I needed this
Justice league set up a "Changeable Timeline" As such if John refuses to be with Shiara, there's a good chance "Rex Stewart" will never exist.
That's a shocker:
Your dad pays a visit from the past and decides he doesn't want you to be born.
Mr. Stewart was my favorite green lantern and frankly he was truly my first outside of an old comic book trading card where I saw the original golden age green lantern.
He was a good man and the best hero for a kid like me.
I love this channel.
I watched John Stewarts arc back in the day stat to finish and yes he's my Green Lantern 🟢🟢
I found your channel like a week ago and it has me watching justice league and superman animated series episodes every night!
Im 37 years old and i still tear up when they sacrifice themselves.
Love the videos and this one is amazingly done, just never tell an actual Marine that they are in the Army (John was a Marine, not in the Army)
Jon is my favorite character and damn I identify my self with him so much
You've been on fire for MONTHS I love all of your DC content all of it movies character pieces the totality is amazing.
On top of regularly saving the universe, he's also had a prolific career as a comedian and political commentator.
Even though I'm in the Air Force, John Stewart as a Marine (not Soldier there's a difference) is such a good hero and role model. Maybe not the Justice Leagues self martyrdom and acceptance of false accusations, but a good Marine and hero non the less.
I love this channel, its always relaxing watching his videos.I hope your channel blows up soon
