Nice
The fact it stopped rounds developed to give infantrymen in the field the ability to defeat BRDMs with rifle fire just floors me. (The M995)
BDRMs? Do you mean the Soviet " Boyevaya Razvedyvatelnaya Dozornaya Mashina" aka "Combat Reconnaissance Patrol Vehicle" - I assume you mean crew served weapons that were on it? or am I an idiot who doesn't know their acronyms - an IWDKTAs if you will...
Errr, or do you mean, they were designed to take on those CRPV's armor?
@@bryanl1984 "ability to defeat BRDMs with rifle fire"
pretty clear
@@vaclavjebavy5118 Not really, I had to dig in pretty deep for that acronym; the acronym we use here (assuming it's actually what he meant) is "CRPV'" and was legit asking if that's what he was talking about. Despite claims to the contrary, people in the US are actually more polyglotal than the rest of the world assumes but not when it comes to Eastern European language acronyms; just as an example, the term "Rocket Propelled Grenades" (RPG's) originated from us in the US making shit up to "make sense" of the actual Russian Acronym of Ruchnoy Protivotankovy Granatomyot, which means something like "hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher." So yeah when I asked if that's what he meant, I actually was asking what he meant.
@@bryanl1984 BRDM is not a general purpose acronym, it's a specific series of vehicles, and used pretty much only in reference to them. Besides, part of your question was whether he meant "BRDM mounted" which is obviously not the case given " defeat BRDMs with rifle fire..."
This testing is absolutely top notch, criminally underrated channel, one of the best community resources out there imo
Thank you, I appreciate that very much. This is the main reason I do this to share the love (information) so we can all be better informed!
I love this channel for the exotic AP rounds you use on armor!! No one else on RUclips does this!!
Glad to see you, Buffman.
Thank you for such high quality individual testing. Keep warm, keep safe, sir.
I really really love these armor destruction videos.... it’s always good to know what rounds do what to armor
I couldn't like this fast enough. Really nice to know the practical capabilities of the plates we get issued.
I would like the see the +p .300 win mag m2 ap again, I'd be interested in seeing if it could consistently penetrate. The m993 threat would also be really interesting to see too.
I wouldn't bet on it. The improved velocity is certainly something, but especially at ranges it'd likely be fired at I would expect failure to perforate.
Further, M993...
Well, that's another story. Still, heavily reduced range of perforation.
Also, this *is* an older model, so keep that in mind.
.300 win mag is no joke. I've shot mild steel with 180 grain soft points at 550 yards and it did not penetrate, but stretched out a cone on the back of the 5/8" mild steel plate. Anything sub 300 yards penetrated.
Very nice test. Keep up the good work!

Nice. I use some regular SAPI plates manufactured in 08/2013 by Ceradyne and also use Botach soft armor as a backer. Not quite an ESAPI but still very light at 4lbs and has decent specs.
Same setup here except for a non ballistic trauma pad as backer.
So green plates then
Because I'm 90% sure the ESAPI series started before that date.
I'll share this bro, love it!
Check out local garage sales, thats where I found my Esapis lol
How on earth...? Where and how much did you pay lol
Fantastic. Thank you.

Thank you for testing that plate, always wondered what the armor they issued us would stop.
The pleasure is all mine!
I'm impressed that the M995 didn't go through! I wonder of the AP4 variant that defeated the RMA NIJ IV would have defeated this. The bulge from the shot looked like it strained the plate.
Tbh m995 kinda of sucks. Sure I would take it over m855a1 if you gave me enough to use or stockpile but for the absurd cost and semi-lack of ability to defeat level 4 reliably it’s just not worth it.
@@user-oy9zy4ds9m NIJ IV struggled to hold back M995 AP3. It would absolutely laugh off M855A1. You'd have a much, much better time getting through armor with M995 and it would easily clear NIJ III+, which is a velocity (thus barrel length) dependent threat for M855A1. And if you manage to get M995 AP4 then you can get through NIJ IV reliably in one shot.
Its only negatives compared to M855A1 are availability and price.
@@TMega5612 buff man showed that even from 22” barrel at close range some level 4 armor still stops m995 easily, but other brands it goes through. So yeah I’d rather have m995 for the roughly ‘50/50’ chance it goes thru level 4, but not for 20X+ the price of m855a1 and the extremely rare availability. I’d rather have 1000 rounds of m855a1 than 50 rounds of m995 lol
I think AP4 is a little stronger, but not enough. Further, this plate isn't checked against 995, you need G or better.
So, against the current line, no, against this, possibly. But I wouldn't count on it.
@@user-oy9zy4ds9m
Also remember that you lose a lot of terminal. 995 vs 855A1, 855A1 is a world away from 995's pinprick.

I think we also have to consider how it performs within an IOTV which grants 9mm protection without plates
The IIIA backer is supposed to mimic having the IOTV
Military needs to develop a better flexible rifle armor vest like Dragon Skin but without the adhesive problems. Materials have come a long way since then.
The adhesive problem was real but fixable - The problem was angled shot, there wasn't a way of getting around it due to the way the disks were shaped and positioned. This is all according to the original inventor of Dragonskin, who went on to develop a different flexible armour system.
I wish m995 was more common ammo.
Great video , could you do level 4 Polyethylene plates
There’s no such thing as a pure PE level IV plate. All level IV plates that are currently known about use ceramic medium as the strike face and PE behind it :)

Heheh. Sometimes words don't come out right :D
After performing all of these armor tests which one is the best would you say for level iv’s?
XSAPI, Adept Colossus, RMA 1192, Spartan Armor Ares, Possible Hesco 4800 once I test it.
Just swapped out my old ESAPI for the updated Rev J.
Nice!
What’s the current rev?
Can you review some Mira safety plates?
Their performance would be very similar to LAPG or Militech's. I can contact them and ask..
for future videos - make sure those cage numbers are blurred out hahahah
Could you expand on this?
@@BuffRANGE anything such as ESAPIs (especially with that cage number), Peq-15s, PVS14s, etc that are military property that are sold somewhere in the public are typically "acquired" items. Use your imagination by what I mean when I say "acquired". When these items go missing, its not long before the unit realizes it. Serial numbers and cage numbers are all recorded and traced. So when a particular item goes missing - its sent to CID that a "sensitive item" is missing. And CID will check places like Ebay, IG, Cragslist for people selling that missing item with the corresponding serial or cage number. This item like you said seems to be alittle outdated so I dont think CID is looking for this plate in particular anymore but in the future if you do acquire anything like this that isnt sold to the public - it was "acquired" and then sold to someone in the public and CID is looking for it. So just for safety, dont show cage numbers or serial numbers. You typically wont get in trouble, but theyll 100 percent ask you who you got that from. It was a big problem at Fort Drum when I was there of dudes stealing nods and Peq-15s and selling them on Ebay and CID was catching all of them. Plates they arent typically worried about thou but you never know
@@Kaotix_music Got it. Not that the guy isn't telling the truth, but the guy who sold these had many samples for sale. If he acquired them in the means of my opening joke skit, You'd think someone would be looking for him. I don't know the protocol is for the gov't selling off old surplus (what I would assume these are labeled as due to age) , but would imagine these could be sold in that manner. Yeah brand new stuff magically disappearing from the base not so much, but I understand what you mean now :D
I have been curious about one thing! Say you get a SA III++ ballistic plate and you back it up with a IIIA UHWMPE soft armor would it be able to stop IV level threats? and to what extend?
Depends.
Give an example.
Would probably depend on the type and thickness of ceramic core used.
Any chance to see how it’s made inside? Is it one big ceramic plate or a set of small tiles?
ETA: also does the ceramic cover completely the plate or are the edges uncovered?
I have a follow up video to do where I shot the used plate with 5.7, and will work on that next. This particular plate is a solid strike face, edge to edge, with a thin metallic layer between the ceramic and PE. I will finish that video off with a tear down of what's left.
@@BuffRANGE thanks for the outstanding job! Cheers from Italy
There were some actual XSAPI (level 5) plates for sale (they were legit) several months ago I wanted to buy them just so I could open them to see how they achieved their rating/ability but I got cold feet because the plates were probably stolen and the internals are probably classified. Anyway the seller said they were just silicone carbide and polyethelene just like regular level 4 plates just 10% heavier 🤷♂️
@@user-oy9zy4ds9m The XSAPI really are just the ESAPI plate made thicker, and thus heavier. They were not much loved by anyone in the test units that wore them for extended periods of time.

I wonder whether the metal layer was steel or aluminum and how thin the layer was.
Also, did the ESAPI have any internal foam padding of its own?

The chances of running into +p+ m2 ap is almost next to none. This was a good plate.
I wouldn't say next to none. Literally anyone could stuff M2-AP pulls into 300 WM :D Regardless yes this is a pretty good plate. Newer revisions of ESAPI however are superior, and I would argue so is a premium NIJ Level IV
@@BuffRANGE I can see your oint, but I doubt everyone will seek out the m2ap and be skillful enough to know how to load it. I think this esapi is one of the best you can get.
True :D And then at the engagement distance one would see 300WM at, those velocities would be below the threshold of this plate.
Are the newer "Rev" plate models constructed differently than older ESAPIs? or is it just indicating that the plate has been tested to new/different threats that the older models were never tested against?
That I couldn't tell you. I will take pics of it's construction and if we ever get a newer revision, we will compare. I'm guessing they thickened and strengthened the ceramic on the newer revisions.
I didn't know people loaded 5.7 into 5.56. Did you have any complications when doing that?
Nope. You just have to be mindful that you'll need a LOT more powder to get them moving. 5.7 bullets are .224" in diameter :D

How light? Multicurve? How much do you want to spend?
to be fair this is past its guaranteed shelf life so it might be degraded a little in protection level. Also level 4 IIRC is tested at a higher standard than ESAPI.
ESAPI is actually tested at a higher threat rating than Level IV. Level IV is 1 center of mass M2AP at 2880 fps. Rev E is 2 shots of M2AP and newer revisions are 3 with the first shot being at a higher velocity:
