I know I'm taking this too literally but I always imagine the burning beach Neil mentions is Kare Kare since it's a song on this album and in summer the black iron sand there is truly burning hot.
My younger sister was obsessed with Crowded House. She'd listen to their CDs and watch one of their VHS tapes over and over. I didn't see the appeal at the time, but damned if their entire discography isn't still burned into my brain a couple of decades later.
I don't know if it's true , but Paul McCartney was once asked who was the greatest living songwriter, to which he replied Neil Finn. I totally agree with him, regardless of whether the comment is true 😉
My life is a house You crawl through the window Slip across the floor and into the reception room You enter the place of endless persuasion Like a knock on the door when there's ten or more things to do Who is that calling? You my companion Run to the water on a burning beach And it brings me relief Pass through the walls To find my intentions Circle round in a strange hypnotic state I look into space There is no connection A million points of life And a conversation I can't face Cast me off one day To lose my inhibitions Sit like a lapdog on a matron's knee With the nails on your feet I woke up the house Stumbled in sideways The lights went on and everybody screamed suprise The savage review it left me gasping But it warms my heart to see that you can do it too Total surrender Your touch is so tender Your skin is like water On a burning beach And it brings me relief And it brings me relief And it brings me relief
So woefully under appreciated given how few views this magnificent song has. I visited Perth Australia the year after this album came out and had this firmly in mind when I plunged into the sea on a 40 degree day
Second best song on their greatest album. In fact, private universe is one of the best songs of all time, so let’s say this is the best track on the album!
Diamond of a song, a real gem by time he sings total surrender ,hands up I surrender, beautiful flow that falls away to a pool of sweet honey, just saying!.
I first became aware of this song when they played live on The Jon Stewart show. They actually started the song at the guitar interlude on their appearance. They also did a great live version of Distant Sun on the show as well.
I still have memories to the car I was driving back then cause I had a 6 CD player in the back and a collection of those cartridges needed cause the car was able to save playlists for each cartridge. That being said I had a crowded house beatles collection in one cartridge that played my favorites on long trips across german plants I had to visit ... that was the soundtrack of my 1994 summer when german football team had fully sucked in the US as the current world champ ... Remember: that was the dawn of CD drives in computers and writeable CD were not there, no recording software and mp3 not invented and internet was more or less unknown ... and 64 K bit modem highspeed line, isdn coming up as the hottest tech in europe
Hester was still in the band at this point as this video was produced in 1993. You have to remember he was in a fragile state at this point when they began promoting Together Alone as he feared of going on tour then feared of returning home. Moreover, he was about to have his first daughter in 1994 so it's understandable that family obligations would soon have to take priority professional.
This was during the stream of consciousness John Lennon phase, so don’t ask because there’s no answer - also if you’re a recovering Catholic it’s pretty obvious
I was listening to this song on spotify and was like-- wait a sec *Excuse me what the fuck* He sings differently in the one on spotify and I was trying desperately to figure out if it was some sort of weird music mandela effect
This song...it's about being shagged back to life...and my 13 year old self who song along to it (and everything else by CH) never realised. I just thought it was a fanciful romantic song, lol.
I like Black & White Boy! I like CH's rock songs in general: they're a good musical contrast to the other tracks, and I love Neil's & band's sound on them.
I never, ever get tired of this song. It's a true beauty on a whole album of incredible songs. One of my favorite albums ever.
I love Nick's bass playing in this one. A highly underrated bassist.
Why is every Crowded House song an absolute gem
Well, because they are. :)
Gems only produce little gems if you cut them (songs from crowded house).
Always love this song, they just make good music,
Because it is a gem.
Total surrender
Your touch is so tender
Your skin is like water
On a burning beach
And it brings me relief
THE most sensual lyric ever. Full stop.
👍👍👍👍👍
Couldnt agree more
I know I'm taking this too literally but I always imagine the burning beach Neil mentions is Kare Kare since it's a song on this album and in summer the black iron sand there is truly burning hot.
It gives me chills all over the multi layered beauty of it
That's why I love them. Since 1987 when they first came on scene
Out Beatled the beatles with this gem
Gorgeous song, lyrics and video. Very soothing. Like a heartfelt prayer.
Your skin is like water on a burning beach and it brings me relief. Magnificent.
Sheer perfection! No better lyric EVER!
Got to be my favourite crowded house song
same
Same. It's beautiful.
Ditto....how do you even dream a song as perfect as this
But then you hear Fingers of Love
My younger sister was obsessed with Crowded House. She'd listen to their CDs and watch one of their VHS tapes over and over. I didn't see the appeal at the time, but damned if their entire discography isn't still burned into my brain a couple of decades later.
Should have listened to your sister, bet she’s a millionaire now!
@@JesusChristisfake What?
Coulda/woulda/shoulda been a hit, but wasn't.. a hidden gem.. such emotion.
So, so beautiful. I've been a fan for 30 years. Love all that Neil does, right from Split Enz onwards x
A slice of Crowded House at their best 🙂 Masterful songwriting by Neil Finn. Paul Hester R.I.P.
Overall, greatest band since the Beatles, IMO.
Fascinated by this song....Neil's writing is in the God Tier.....
This song strikes Me as a prayer 🙏
Why have I not listened to this for 15 years? superb band
I have chills listening to this gorgeous song
"But it warms my heart to see you can do it too." - wow, what a line.
These guys are on the timeless list for songs that never get old.
This chorus is God-Tier.
The the lyrics in Neil’s songs are nothing short of haunted, spiritual and from a dream. Cheers.
I go through favourites and this song is mine now. It's about bloody time Neil Finn gets put on our currency in my humble.
I always found most of the songs on this album to be more eerie than previous ones. It might just be me, though.
Nick Seymour...brilliant.
One of their top five best songs in their catalogue!
This one is an arrow in the heart, of the strange hypnotic state of depression.
Bought this as a single. Haven't heard it in decades!
This band got it so right and totally nails it.
I don't know if it's true , but Paul McCartney was once asked who was the greatest living songwriter, to which he replied Neil Finn. I totally agree with him, regardless of whether the comment is true 😉
No, Paul never said that.
Most definitely one of the best!!!
One of their top ten.
My life is a house
You crawl through the window
Slip across the floor and into the reception room
You enter the place of endless persuasion
Like a knock on the door when there's ten or more things to do
Who is that calling?
You my companion
Run to the water on a burning beach
And it brings me relief
Pass through the walls
To find my intentions
Circle round in a strange hypnotic state
I look into space
There is no connection
A million points of life
And a conversation I can't face
Cast me off one day
To lose my inhibitions
Sit like a lapdog on a matron's knee
With the nails on your feet
I woke up the house
Stumbled in sideways
The lights went on and everybody screamed suprise
The savage review it left me gasping
But it warms my heart to see that you can do it too
Total surrender
Your touch is so tender
Your skin is like water
On a burning beach
And it brings me relief
And it brings me relief
And it brings me relief
Great transcription of the lyrics, but I think it's "a million points of light, and a conversation I can't face".
Just ‘rediscovered’ this beautiful song
So woefully under appreciated given how few views this magnificent song has. I visited Perth Australia the year after this album came out and had this firmly in mind when I plunged into the sea on a 40 degree day
This is what perfection is
Second best song on their greatest album. In fact, private universe is one of the best songs of all time, so let’s say this is the best track on the album!
Thanks ,i'vee been so long ago try to find this song,
I really love this song
These guys are a lot better than their recognized for. They should've had a lot more hits in the US
If you know you know
Classic ❤
1.45 to 2.10 absolutely fantastic
Yes really!!! The mellotron sound wow!.
Diamond of a song, a real gem by time he sings total surrender ,hands up I surrender, beautiful flow that falls away to a pool of sweet honey, just saying!.
I actually like this song it is relaxing ;) This song is the most beautiful song I've ever heard of :)
But it warms my heart to see that you can do it too...
I love this song
My favourite too. Weird it's not on their Greatest Hits album.
I first became aware of this song when they played live on The Jon Stewart show. They actually started the song at the guitar interlude on their appearance. They also did a great live version of Distant Sun on the show as well.
Debuted in my weekly personal chart on October 10, 1993 edition :)
Gorgeous song
Great song
The change in drumming speed and bass note at 2:54 - 2:55 😎 😎
Great detail
Perfect.
8 people left a savage review.
I hope Neil's not gasping.
And this song did not make it onto the Crowded House 'best of' compilation "Recurring Dream'?
They have a lot of great songs
нравится эта песня еще с 90-х

Lyrically impossible to improve upon
Musically, perfect
Thanks
I had a Together Alone Promo VHS it was filmed at Kare Kare Beach so it gave me the visual and you can hear the atmosphere as it was created there .
Heartbreaking that there is a cherub with a snare drum and Paul Hester is noticeably absent in this video. :(
Hessie had left the band at this point.
I've always wondered why Paul wasn't in this video, as he left in 1994 and this was a single in 93
I know Paul passed much later but that is kind of eerie
Hester was still in the band at this point as this video was produced in 1993. What is this song about? I love the imagery.
This was during the stream of consciousness John Lennon phase, so don’t ask because there’s no answer - also if you’re a recovering Catholic it’s pretty obvious
Вещь👍👍👍
somehow this version sounds a bit different to the album one, am I right?... Absolutely superb and deep touching otherwise
It's the same as the album version. Team NF
The mix sounds different to me, as well.
Listen to the instinct music video vs. the album version. Big difference in the mix there
Я русская!Слушаю!Супер!!
I was listening to this song on spotify and was like-- wait a sec *Excuse me what the fuck*

Everyone screams surprise!
And it brings me relief...
9 people with absolutely no music taste I see
💖💙💖💙🤍💙🖤🤍💛
If it wasn't for Black and White Boy, which is a dog of a song, this would be the best album ever made.
I always figured B&W Boy was about Paul Hester. I quite like it, but that's me.
But that chord change... I could be still, then bang! And you’re full of the wondrous spring! Love it
CelestialMusicCan it absolutely is about Paul.
Together alone was the best album ever !
I like Black & White Boy! I like CH's rock songs in general: they're a good musical contrast to the other tracks, and I love Neil's & band's sound on them.
The nimble dinghy constitutively relax because pancake surgically tame with a warm swordfish. enchanted, early nurse
I love this song
